William Makepeace Thackery's mid-19th-century meditation on the boundaries of class and gender gets a smartly sympathetic remake via Indian director Mira Nair and Reese Witherspoon, who imbues the story's social-climbing Becky Sharp with some of the same spunky spirit the actress brought to Legally Blonde's equally ambitious Elle. Composer Mychael Danna furthers that sense of era-bridging drama with an orchestral score that sets the story's time and place via effective pastiches of Schubert and Beethoven (that's Danna himself channeling a little Ludwig van on the evocative solo piano passages "Andante" and "Adagio"), yet often fuses them seamlessly with a modern sensibility that helps story's contemporary parallels resonate all the more. The soundtracks four songs revolve around poles of Romantic-era evocations (Danna's stately adaptations of Lord Byron's sonnet "She Walks in Beauty" and the standard "Great Adventurer") and the lively East Asian rhythms of Hakim's "El Salaam" and Mahadevan/Sharma's sprightly duet, "Gori Re." But Danna's masterful infusion of 19th century classical Romanticism with the dry, postmodern instincts of the 21st are the score's most compelling achievements, music that argues that while times and mores have changed, the human spirit remains as stubborn as ever. --Jerry McCulley

3 out of 5 stars tis a chick flick.......2006-05-22

Vanity Fair..A feast for the eyes...and hardly a true period piece! SO the music is a bit out of sync...It is still fabulous and for the musical snobs..I too happen to a VERY learned "chantuese".. and in my opinion Custer Larues'. Crimson petal is anything But wimpy...It is meant to be whispery..and provocative..there is nothing uncertain at all about it...MUCH control there..!
Becky Sharp is a character that many women adore because she is STRONG and ruthless! Who cares if the movie was not dead on accurate..It was truly enjoyable...ANd I loved it!

3 out of 5 stars Crimson Petal - historical correctness.......2005-11-13

I did like this movie... but I'm not going to pretend that it stuck to the book or was even remotely historically correct. I loved the song "Now sleeps the crimson petal," but I did want to clear up some things about it. I've been looking for the sheet music and it doesn't appear to exist. There are about 7 people who have written songs based on Tennyson's poem, but this version was written by Mychael Danna, does not even closely resemble Roger Quilter or Robert Young. Mychael Danna did nearly the entire soundtrack and he is wonderful. I just wish i could find the sheet music.

4 out of 5 stars Now sleeps the crimson petal..........2005-08-10

Why bother about historical accuracy at all? The scene where Becky sings "Now sleeps the crimson petal" is probably the most memorable and moving scene of the whole film. I loved it.

4 out of 5 stars Indeed -- Crimson Petal in -what- year?.......2005-04-03

I very much enjoyed the soundtrack (much, much more than the movie) for what it was -- some beautifully done music. I don't know enough about composition to relate different styles to different periods (my knowledge goes about as far as "dissonant=modern"), but I -do- know literature, and just want to note that "Now Sleeps the Crimson Petal" is a poem by Alfred, Lord Tennyson, published in 1847 -- which would be WELL after Becky Sharpe sung it in the movie, even with all the bizarre time-jumping going on in it. This in no way diminishes the song's beauty, and I love the poem for itself -- but just wanted to add a few grains of salt to the historical accuracy of the soundtrack, which remains, to my ear, quite beautiful.

A further quirk to me was the "Salaam" song, which is sung in Arabic. Still enjoyable (though it made NO SENSE in the movie), but I feel it's worth noting that it's not any dialect of Indian.

3 out of 5 stars Crimson Petal in WHAT YEAR?.......2005-02-21

As a retired professional classical musician, I have strong attitudes about music. I greatly enjoyed this film version of Vanity Fair, and think Reese Witherspoon was wonderful, as were most of the actors. The music, though, was odd to say the least. For me the "Crimson Petal" song (and the whole movie scene in which it was heard) was a low point, because the song was obviously from the late twentieth century or the early twenty-first, and did not belong in the movie at all. I suspect that the reason the moviemakers got away with this is that with the general decline in interest in classical music, nobody knows any more what kind of music came from which era. Well, I think I do know - though I am ready to stand corrected if someone can explain that there really was a song from the Napoleonic era that had all this chromaticism, etc. in it. I did appreciate the fact that when Becky Sharp/Reese Witherspoon was supposed to be singing, her voice was rather wimpy and uncertain; it would not have been believable to have her singing with fabulous line and breath support. I agree with the other reviewer that Sissel's "She Walks In Beauty" was a high point.
I suggest that people might look into real period song collections and skip the movie music in this instance.

5 out of 5 stars An Artist's Artist.......2006-03-18

Danielle Woerner has long been prized on the classical music scene for the exquisite intelligence of her singing and the distinctive beauty of her voice. Her range is and has been astonishing--from opera to art song--and in this recording one can her that sound and intimate sensibility which has earned her such a splendid name. Buy it!

5 out of 5 stars Luscious and deeply moving.......2000-12-29

Danielle Woerner's voice is so rich and mellow, you can get lost in it. I was not familiar with this repertoire, and found Luening's setting of Emily Dickinson to be marvelous--sometimes serious, sometimes playful, always true to the deep emotions. I also liked the setting of William Blake's "Ah, Sun-flower", which Luening composed especially for this singer. I found myself listening over and over to the poems of Gail Godwin as set by her partner and collaborator, Robert Starer. The compositions are moving and complex, and Woerner makes excellent musical choices for presenting them in a way that the audience can truly feel. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars american art song.......2000-12-30

This recording is an accesible, refreshingly lyrical collection of 20th century American songs written by Otto Luening. Luening set the poetry of Oscar Wilde, Emily Dickinson, and James Joyce and others in a beautifully vivid and straightforward style. The literature itself is rich and enduring, and Luenning's style is sensitively efficient and illustrative. Ms. Bettina brings a wonderfully clear and graceful musicality in her offering of these works. Mr. Goldsworthy brings a masterful sensitivity to the accompaniment.

This is a very lyrical, refreshingly accessible collection of 20th century American songs by Otto Luenning. The literature by Emily Dickinson, Oscar Wilde and James Joyce ( to name only a few), that Luenning chose to set is rich and wonderful in itself. Luenning has provided each with direct, clear and sensitive composition. Ms. Bettina gives a graceful rendering of these songs and shows artistry in each piece. Mr. Goldsworthy is first rate pianist who displays great sensitivity and clarity.

In telling the story of Gustav Mahler's socially tempestuous wife and fellow composer-songwriter Alma, director Bruce Beresford faced great challenges. But they would seem to pale in comparison to the task of composer Stephen Endelman, who was variously asked to highlight Alma's largely unfamiliar songs, economically echo Mahler's most sweeping works, and compose an original score that meshed seamlessly with the Mahlers' music. Though purists may grumble somewhat, Endelman has largely succeeded here, capturing the rich drama and emotion at the heart of both Mahlers' disparate music while compacting it to fit the medium's constraints. Soprano Renée Fleming voices Alma's "Bei Ist Es Traut" and "Laau Sommernacht" in new recordings with pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet, as well as Gustav's "Ruckert Lied No. 5" backed by the Czech Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra. Edited catalog Vienna Symphony performances of Gustav's Symphony no. 3 conducted by Claudio Abbado and Symphonies nos. 5 and 6 by Pierre Boulez are also featured, along with the feverish violin music of Gypsy musical savant Janos Bihari, performed here by Roby Lakatos and Ensemble. Endelman's underscore is used sparingly, forging measured emotional links betwixt the Mahlers' own stormy compositions. --Jerry McCulley

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful!.......2006-03-16

I had no idea of Alma Mahler's composing talents until I listened to this CD! She is very different from her husband who is heavier and moodier. Her music is lighter and sentimental at the same time. Listen and enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars great movie and story - see it soon.......2005-08-14

this is a great movie about the life of alma mahler/schindler. her life and her work are inspiring - it's too bad that more people haven't heard about her. however, such is the story with many powerful women of the past. hopefully the future will not be the same.

2 out of 5 stars renee fleeming sounds sublime, but to little her from.......2003-08-04

Sure renee fleeming's voice was giving the ears a treatment of the silky and the beauty. When you listen to the soundtrack you then find her voice is only present on three short tracks.A little more imagination they should of had.For renee fleeming they should have more used.It happends all this cd is,except for renee fleeming's contribution,is a hospodge of mahler music that has been for the most part already recorded to death anyway.Where was the vision and the fire with these recordings. Are they still trying to turn more people away from classical music.I must also say that the cover art is ugly and the eye sore that gauges the eyes.Furthermore to much blue on blue to make a vomiting hue!!!I gave it two stars instead of one because of the magic of rennee fleeming's singing and the intelligence of her interpretations.Alas, even renee could not totally redeem this recording due to the fact that the three songs renee sings are so short they don't even count together as ten minutes. I wouldn't buy this with money i found on the ground!!!!! Try another cd from amazon instead peace out!!!

5 out of 5 stars A Surprise!.......2001-06-17

I bought this soundtrack, even though I never saw the film. I put it in my portable cd player and was I surprised! It was such a great cd. I really like the female soprano. All the songs she sings are beautiful! Even though they are in German!

If you like traditional Romanticism intensified by post-Romantic harmonic astringency and are still unfamiliar with the music of Nicolas Flagello, then you have a treat in store. Born and raised in the post-Romantic tradition, he reveres its many masterpieces, traces of which drift through his own music with comfortable familiarity, yet despite the undeniable reminiscences, Flagello displays a strong creative personality with his own unmistakable vision and a distinctive language through which to project it.

Koehne's music should be better known outside of his native Australia. He's a technically accomplished composer who somehow blends into a sophisticated pallete the middlebrow music of the 1950s (Xavier Cugat and Henry Mancini, for example) without heavy-handed irony. Koehne seems to really like the middlebrow music a little too much. As a result, at times I thought that Koehne was aiming too directly at emulating the film music of John Williams and the like. But each time I hear the music on this disk I hear something different.

        4 out of 5 stars Shared Experience.......2002-12-17

Easy to listen to...yet danceable. I put the CD player on "random" and listened to it again. The original lyrics seem so straightforward that I imagine I am reading her personal mail. She shoots from the hip and her heartache is a listeners' joy. On the other hand, I feel like she is writing about me. I once had a love...Anny's glib music gives listeners counsel on the shared experience of wrong timing and how it feels to be on the losing end of love.

5 out of 5 stars In My Top Five.......2002-09-13

...records I've played on, that is. This record, from the mid nineties, shows off Anny's excellent songwriting and the talents of my fellow band mates. And at the risk of being immodest, I think I played some respectable guitar, here. Listening to "Kiss a Crocodile," you'd think I was some kind of Zappa freak, or even a renegade metal kid. "Whiskey Walk" is a classic walking, no make that stumbling, blues drinking song. "She Walks In" is pure Anny, at her best writing, with a little bit of americana twang. And "This House Won't Rock" converys the pop/r&B girl group exuberance of the might Tearjerkers. So pick this up and listen to some of the finest undiscovered pop/rock on record.

5 out of 5 stars This album just knocks me out - it is so good........2002-02-17

I first learned about Anny Celsi's Annyland when I read that she was one of the winners of the "Songs Inspired by Literature (SIBL)" competition this year. I got a copy of this CD of hers from a few years back and I find myself playing it over and over again. Aside from absolutely brilliant lyrics and music and a voice that just takes your breath away, there is this remarkably authentic personal sense she brings to her music. It's so easy to imagine an entire novel or film or play about the singer in every one of her songs - they are each so fully drawn and so compelling. I have no favorite song on the album - they all take me to a different place. By the time you get to the end you really feel like you've gone through and made a journey with someone. I can't recommend it highly enough. And I was thrilled to hear that along with being featured on the SIBL CD she has another CD of her own coming out sometime soon. I can't wait.

4 out of 5 stars Annyland plays great grown-up rock!.......2000-02-21

Anny Celsi writes songs that grab your attention with catchy hooks and then keep you listening with their emotional complexity. Celsi's lyrics combine moods in ways that tickle and hurt a little bit. Strong/sad, funny/angry, heartbroken/defiant; here's a songwriter who's obviously lived some and knows how to tell you about it. Her rock vocabulary is classic and her band's handling of it solid and powerful. Favorite cuts of mine are "Hole in the Sky," a bit weary and shuffling, but optimistic nonetheless, "Drag the River," which leaves you aching for a sequel, and the title cut, "She Walks In," which kicks off the album with an irresistible rhythm and a hint of menace. I recommend Annyland to classic rock fans of any age, but especially to people who've been around the block a few times. Annyland mines the world of grown-up life, and comes up with 11 beautiful cutting little gems. Check it out!

        4 out of 5 stars I love Annyland!.......1999-12-27

Anny is a great songwriter. Her lyrics stick with you long after you've finished listening to the CD. The music is moody and melodic the vocals are strong and determined. A very enjoyable cd.
