The Traveling Wilburys were one of the few supergroups that lived up to their promise, because they didn't try to. Things started inauspiciously when George Harrison, needing a B-side for a 1988 single, called in friends Jeff Lynne, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, and Roy Orbison for assistance. Two albums later--the second without Orbison, who had passed away shortly after the first was released--the loose-knit collective had recorded material that was as durable, and occasionally eclipsed, the participants' legendary solo work. The Wilburys succeeded due to a genial and contagious camaraderie that permeates both discs. What could have been a train wreck of ego clashes instead resulted in a frothy meeting of the minds. These guys are having a blast, trading lead vocals and harmonies on energetic folk-rock, quirky rockabilly, and Beatlesque pop that shimmers with the respect and esteem the members clearly hold for each other. Harrison and Lynne's rather slick production polishes off edges that might better have been left unvarnished, but there's no denying the loosey-goosey craftsmanship at work in tunes such as "Handle with Care," "End of the Line," and a striking Orbison performance on "Not Alone Anymore" that ranks with any of his finest. Both albums were million-sellers, but oddly went out of print for about a decade until Rhino resurrected them, adding two rare tracks per disc as well as a DVD of music videos and a band documentary. The resulting package is a comprehensive overview of a once--well, twice--in-a-lifetime project that, especially after Harrison's passing, will never be repeated. --Hal Horowitz

3 out of 5 stars Who Was In The Band? The Chicks?.......2007-07-30

The DVD was really the only reason to get this set. I had the originals when they were released. The sound is a bit better on these but who really cares? As for the bonus tracks, a total waste of time. They missed a lot of potential tracks which were overlooked as well as a "B" side. They could have even padded out the rest of the CD's with the 12" mixes. Nevertheless, they put Olivia Harrison in charge with Roy Orbison's widow assisting & this was the result! Jeff Lynne, Bob Dylan & Tom Petty should have had the say so on this one, not the widows. After all, who played in this band? Enough Said!

5 out of 5 stars If you are a fan.......2007-07-28

If you are a fan of Tom, George, Roy, Jeff and Bob you will love this set. I have both vol.1 and 3 on vinyl, but hardly ever listened to vol.3. I did not realize how good that album was. I have fallen in love with vol 3. The dvd with the music videos and the documentary is fun and very interesting. It is amazing to watch these artists at work. I highly recommend this set.

5 out of 5 stars HANDLE WITH CARE - THIS SET IS A REAL GEM.......2007-07-23

The Traveling Wilburys were one of the few supergroups that lived up to their promise, mostly because they didn't try to. Things started off simply enough when George Harrison, needing a B-side for a 1988 single, called on friend Jeff Lynne who happened to know that Bob Dylan had a studio nearby in L.A.. George's guitar was at Tom Petty's house and by that point they decided to do the group thing.

The group was complete with the addition of Roy Orbison, acclaimed by many as "The Most Beautiful Voice in Rock n' Roll." Unfortunately, Orbison passed away shortly after the first album was released, but the Wilburys succeeded due to the genial camaraderie that is reverberates through both discs. What could have been a train wreck of ego, instead resulted in these guys having a blast, trading lead vocals and harmonies that shimmer with the affection and respect the members clearly held for each other.

Harrison and Lynne's beautiful production make these records both listenable and memorable, particularly "Handle with Care," "End of the Line," and a breathtaking Orbison performance on "Not Alone Anymore". The CD's went out of print for about a decade until Olivia Harrison completed George's wishes to re-master and re-release the material, adding two rare tracks per disc as well as a DVD of music videos and a band documentary. The Deluxe package also includes a hard cover book of rare photos and a sticker.

This is a comprehensive overview of a twice-in-a-lifetime project that, especially after Harrison's and Orbison's passing, will never be repeated.

5 out of 5 stars Rhino hits grand slam with this one!.......2007-07-23

I have long marveled at Rhino with their compilation expertise (British Invasion series and Nuggets), sound management and marketing prowess.
When I first heard that Rhino was releasing the Traveling Wilbury's I knew there could not have been a better match. I am fortunate to have been working at local record store (1987 thru 1989)when the original Traveling Wilbury's releases came out, so I got copies well before they went out of print. The sound quality on the originals was very good, but the next releases are even better. Having "Nobody's Child" on the official releases sounds like it was meant to be on them. The other bonus tracks are interesting and fun and the booklet and DVD and photos are priceless.
There never was a band like Traveling Wilbury's before and never will be again. The mixture of voices, the ringing guitars, the production prowess of Jeff Lynne and George Harrison and the relaxed nature all contribute to this being some of the best music ever created. My hat is off to Rhino, and if there is any negative about this deluxe edition it could be that too few were made. I have been reading on some sites that many folks did not get theirs from Amazon, and that the Deluxe edition is already sold out. Perhaps Rhino will put it back into production to staisfy the continuing hunger. The Traveling Wilbury's and Rhino........a natural!!!!!

It's hard to imagine, but Beatles resident mystic George Harrison has arguably become the band's most curmudgeonly cynic. We offer as evidence this splendidly remastered 30th-anniversary edition of his 1970 multidisc solo epic. If the mini-boxed set's booklet and twin inner CD sleeves won't convince you (the album's familiar cover is colorized and altered to include backdrops of a freeway-tangled cityscape and nuclear reactor cooling towers, respectively), then maybe his liner-note apology for Phil Spector's "big production" (kind of like Da Vinci grousing about Mona's crooked smile) or his laconic, stripped-down, 2000 rethink of "My Sweet Lord" will. With such a mindset, it's unsurprising Harrison has allowed a nearly decade-and-a-half gap to grow between recordings. Still, no amount of grumpy auto-revisionism can subtract from the admittedly overwrought majesty of these tracks, which were the logical sonic extension of Abbey Road. It remains Harrison's unequaled masterpiece. The devolved "My Sweet Lord" aside, the bonus tracks here offer new insight: the unreleased "I Live for You" further highlights the album's oft overlooked country facet; spare takes of "Beware of Darkness" and "Let It Down" underscore the strength of Harrison's songwriting; an alternate backing track of "What Is Life" demonstrates the meticulousness of Spector's production. And then there's the project's truly stellar session lineup, which included Eric Clapton, Ringo Starr, Klaus Voorman, Jim Gordon, Dave Mason, Badfinger, Billy Preston, Ginger Baker, Carl Radle, Gary Brooker, Jim Price, Bobby Keys, Pete Drake and, it turns out, even Phil Collins! --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars ALL THINGS MUST PASS (but George Harrison's spiritual rock triple album is still a classic).......2007-06-24

George Harrison's All Things Must Pass (1970) was the second triple album ever to reach the No.1 spot on the U.S. charts (Woodstock was first, and Wings Over America was the third in 1976). It's a rock classic, and it includes many of George's most spiritual songs, including, of course, My Sweet Lord. The album's texture and mood is sincere, sacred, and immaculate. Phil Spector's "wall of sound" production helps to create that mood, giving the album an intensity and reverence that is most often found in a House of Worship. Other songs on the album, like Apple Scruffs, If Not for You, and the wonderful outtake, I Live For You, all have an English country music sound that features pedal steel guitar, harmonica, and acoustic slide guitar. All of these are real treats, and add to the album's variety. On the spiritual side, My Sweet Lord, Hear Me Lord, The Art Of Dying, and Awaiting On You All are direct in their meaning of finding, knowing, and loving God. Others, like All Things Must Pass, Isn't It A Pity, and Beware Of Darkness, are also spiritual, but in a worldly, more practical way. All of these songs are very good, all are thought provoking, and George sounds great on every one of them. His excellant guitar playing is highlighted throughout (by the time George joined The Beatles, he was one of the hottest young guitar players in Liverpool), and his passionate search for knowing God more intimately seems genuine and pure. The album includes electric guitar fueled straight ahead rock n' roll, acoustic guitar based folk-rock music, and ballads with orchestration. There's an all-star jam session that includes Eric Clapton, Ginger Baker, Billy Preston, and Dave Mason, among others, and although pretty good, it's really just a curiosity. There are some extra tracks included, and some are very good. The afore mentioned I Live For You, and an unplugged and passionate Let It Down from 2000 are the best of these, but My Sweet Lord (2000) and an unplugged Beware Of Darkness from 2000 are also very good. All Things Must Pass is a wise and spiritually uplifting musical experience, a rock classic that belongs in every music collection, and it's George Harrison's very best album. And you've gotta love that album cover!

4 out of 5 stars Good material, bad packaging.......2007-06-12

The recording is excellent; the quality is very good and the material is vintage Harrison stuff... well done. But why the bulky packaging? This two-CD set should be in a standard-size double-disc jewel case so it could fit on our shelves or in portable CD carriers. It's an important album for Harrison fans, but needs a better package!

5 out of 5 stars The Endearing Classics of George Harrision- It's Within You.......2007-06-05

I am one of those sad sacks who threw away all his vinyl albums when 8 tracks, cassettes and cd's all made those wonderful album covers and contents obsolete along with BSR turntables and diamond needles. Trouble is that now I miss those classic rock and folk treasures and wind up buying them again on CD and spreading them out into all my devices. One of these events involved All Things Must Pass, George Harrison.

George Harrison, if you remember and are old enough to recall, was the lead Beatle when it came to such things as transcendental meditation, the Mahareeshi Mahesh Yoga, and controversal trips to India with musical input from Ravi Shankar. Not only was George darker, more psychological in his music, a bit wailing and depressing, but he may have been just as good in his own right as the Beatle hierarchy; John and Paul. This particular CD, All Things Must Pass has two entries, Beware of Darkness and Isn't it a Pity that are particularly ingeneous because they exemplify George Harrison's uncompromising ability to bring out from listeners both pathos and unmitigated pleasure st the same time. George's guitar skills I always thought were better than the other lads. When you add such jewels as Wah Wah, My Sweet Lord (Chiffons or no Chiffons?), and Apple Scruffs you wind up with a CD set that rivals the so-called perfect albums ie. Dark Side of the Moon, Rumours, Tapestry. So even if you don't usually double purchase, sometimes getting it right is better than denying yourself the pleasure of this masterpiece. The way things are today, you will be listening to this George Harrison album everywhere, as you will soon realize its significance and influence on past and present rock music.

5 out of 5 stars Greatest Spiritual Rock Album of All Time.......2007-06-03

You don't have to believe in God to fall in love with album, but it helps. Many of Harrison's wonderful songs are addressed directly to the Lord. George's classic hit My Sweet Lord is here, and the seasoned ear can determine for themselves whether or not he ripped off He's So Fine by the Chiffons (he didn't.) The Shy Beatle's gentle voice is wistful and spiritual, and Eric Clapton (uncredited, due to record label issues) tears up some elegiac and soulful guitar licks. Just beautiful. The last third of the album is pretty much take it or leave it. After a cohesive double album of spiritual, love, and playful songs, George rocks out on four long instrumental jams. I don't listen to them very often. But the bulk of the album is great. There is a wonderful cover of Dylan's If Not For You on disc one, as well as the classic What Is Life, featured in Goodfellas. The bonus songs new to this edition are also keepers, especially I Live For You, which is a beautiful song that fits in perfectly with the other tracks. Listen to this album and you'll dig love too.

5 out of 5 stars Reminiscing Spiritual Rock!.......2007-05-10

When George Harrison broke free from those other three clowns, it was the wisest thing he ever did! No longer constrained to "Papa Lennon," "Mama Mc.Cartney" or "Sibling Starr," his talent exploded and he could finally joyously chant the Hare Krsna Mantra with total freedom!

(I shouln't be so hard on Ringo! He played drums for Harrison on this album!)

This album has special meaning for me! In my 20's in Pocatello, Idaho, every spring I had a ritual. It didn't matter what vehicle I owned, whether the Volkswagen Beetle, the souped-up Javelin (Holy J) or the Firebird, I always had a killer audio system in it. The system evolved from 8 track to cassette. And I would drive that vehicle through the mountains on Cherry Creek road while blasting this album joyously! All Things Must Pass is so positive and uplifting!

Now I am 52, and my vehicle of choice is my Toyota Tacoma. My medium of choice is the iPod. My system of choice is a 700 watt Thump kicker, piped into two massive Polk Audio subwoofers, coupled into two huge horn tweeters in back of the extended cab! "EH....eh...:)"

And my album of choice to make all the drivers on their cell phones angry at me as I drive my commute is this album!

All I need to do now is to drive my truck back to Pocatello, on Cherry Creek Road to complete this glorious metamorphosis! While frying the truck's electrical system blasting All Things Must Pass to the world!

As the Beatles' perpetual dark horse, Harrison rarely got the chance to write and sing more than one or two songs per album. But once the band split up, the former "quiet one" was quick out of the gate with a series of memorable hit singles that seamlessly merged his budding spirituality and an epic, Phil Spector-inspired pop sensibility. This collection, originally released in 1976, combines seven of Harrison's best-known Beatles numbers, including "Something," "If I Needed Someone," "Here Comes the Sun," and "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" with a half-dozen early solo hits including "My Sweet Lord," "Give Me Love (Give Me Peace On Earth)," "You," and "What Is Life." As such, it's a good entry-level Harrison primer. --Scott Schinder

5 out of 5 stars The Best of George Harrison.......2007-07-16

I bought this CD because of only one of the songs on it. However, when I listened to the other songs, I really liked all of them. I realized that George was a great musician apart from the Beatles. I plan to buy more of his CD's.

4 out of 5 stars Dollars and (common) cents........2007-06-12

I'm going to rate this CD based on a $1 per song cost to total cost for the entire CD (Apple and Rhapsody charge $1 per song).
This CD is hard to judge. Amazon is charging $12 for the CD. There are $7 worth of good songs on here, but 4 of them are songs George wrote while with the Beatles. So if you are a Beatles fan, you are buying music you already own (songs: Something, Here Comes the Sun, Taxman and While My Guitar Gently Weeps). The three great solo songs on this CD are My Sweet Lord, Give Me Love and What Is Life. To get his "Dark Horse" hits 'Got My Mind Set On You', 'When We Was Fab' and 'All Those Years Ago', you have to buy a different CD. Unfortunately, there are no Beatles songs or George Harrison songs available on iTunes to date. If you can, hold off and wait for iTunes to make the solo songs available or wait for a Greatest Hits CD that includes all six solo songs on it. George Harrison - RIP.
Hope this helps.

4 out of 5 stars Here Comes The ex-Beatle.......2007-06-05

Well, what is there to say about George Harrison that has not already been said? The great man had a most prolific musical career and here on his 'Best Of' collection, alot of his most memorable songs are all waiting to be heard. The trouble is that every time someone puts together a 'Best Of' album for an artist of this caliber, you obviously only seem to hear what has been deemed his 'Best' by the critic world. But dig a little deeper and you will find alot more character in the original albums. Now this was the first George Harrison CD that I bought, and I really enjoy it, but only after I bought up some of Harrison's other CD albums did I find the man in his element, with music arranged and paired just as he intended. I must say that "Brainwashed" is a particular favorite. But as for this compilation itself, well there's alot to be enjoyed here.

"Something" seems a proper opening followed by "If I needed Someone" and then perhapse the best Beatles song ever played, "Here Comes the Sun". "Taxman" playes the lighter side of Harrison, and "For You Blue" is one of my favorites here. The kind of simple song that George Harrison was best at. "While My uitar Gently Weeps" is a perennial favorite, but "My Sweet Lord" is the kind of song you'll want to hear again and again. The rest is standard Harrison greatness and there's certainly plenty to listen to on this CD. Definitely worth the buy for anyone beginning to get interested in the man's work for the first time, especially considering the many different albums and great songs spread around on each. Perfect for the casual George Harrison fan. So sit back and enjoy this fine compilation.

To George!

4 out of 5 stars George's memory continues to bear greatness...espcially in this collection.......2007-05-04

I've always liked George Harrison. He was a great Beatle, who was underrated in the musical department. This collection has all of his Beatle best, and "Something" is simply amazing. One of my favorite songs ever. This collection in lean on the solo work, and only has the Beatle stuff. Everyone is pining for a "George Harrison Anthology" and i am rooting for it to be released. He made a lot of great stuff post-Beatles; and his music still influences today. George, you were a saint.

5 out of 5 stars "Elmore James got nothin' on this!".......2007-03-09

Of course this CD is excellent. His talent was immense. However, the ultimate "The Best of George Harrison" CD (set) will have another 30 songs added.

5 out of 5 stars Blue Suede Shoes.......2007-07-03

Blue Suede Shoes: A Rockabilly Session showing Carl Perkins as the king of his game and the guests who appear on this session. Carl was a professional who could and did deliver the goods. He pulls an outstanding performance out of Ringo & George showing a lot of 1950's influence. The quality of this session is unbelieveable and continuity makes the whole program flow smoothly and time just flies. Highly recommend this CD.

5 out of 5 stars George, Eric and Ringo go to school........2007-04-12

Great soundtrack to the 80's era cable special. Carl shows the boys a few tricks in a fantastic jam session. Don't pass this up.

5 out of 5 stars Needs To Be On DVD!.......2007-04-03

I have this on VHS and now on CD, but it needs to be on DVD. Classic show, classic line-up, and the first time 2 Beatles performing together (and the last until Concert For George) since Bangladesh. When Carl breaks up at the end telling everyone how much he appreciated all of his friends it will bring a lump to the throat of any fan of his or of "roots" rock & roll. Seldom does one get to play with people of that calibre and the love they obviously have for the songs is eclipsed by the love they had for Carl himself, a class act all his life.

Great rockabilly with one of the forgotten founders. If you love the Elvis Sun Sessions, this is right up your alley. Perkins impresses as a guitarist also, but it is Claptons solo's that make you go ooHH !!!!

Even if you're not a rabid George Harrison fan, as I am, I think you'll still find it a great listening experience with Eric Clapton and Ringo Starr and the old guy himself, Carl Perkins, who gave us so many memorable tunes. They're not dead yet as long as we have their music to listen to.

5 out of 5 stars EX BEATLES with a heart and mind of his own.......2007-05-13

One of the most romantic and playable record I've ever listened to: I had already the 33round in vynil and I wanted to have also the more durable CD.

5 out of 5 stars One of his George's best!.......2007-03-09

I bought this album originally when first released, but sadly lost it along the way. Thankfully I recalled it when replacing my ageing collection of records. This is probably the best album George did after All this must pass. He had some teriffic help in making it, Geoff Lynne, Ringo, Elton and Eric Clapton. It was made around the time of the Travelling Wilburys ablbums, which are equally as good as this one, but sadly only available from Russia?
The tracks are very catchy, with I've got my mind set on you, being bar far the best. You can sense that the musicians playing on these numbers are masters of there craft and are truly enjoying making great music.

5 out of 5 stars Harrison's 2nd Most Important Album.......2007-01-29

Review of George Harrison's Cloud Nine

by Mel C. Thompson.

Typically Harrison's albums have maybe one hit, or even no hits, then maybe one or two good songs, and then a lot of pretty iffy material.

Of course All Things Must Pass was an exception. It was, by far, the best post-Beatles album produced by any of the Beatles, and remains, by the way, the best selling of all the post-Beatle albums.

Cloud Nine was, however, a total breakout album for a few reasons. Firstly, the album had one smash hit, Got My Mind Set On You. This hit had such staying power and came so late in Harrison's career that it got Harrison a huge non-Beatles audience, so much so that I met young kids at the time who did not know or believe Harrison had been in the Beatles and simply liked him as a solo artist. That kind of comeback is a very rare achievement for any artist.

But also, the album has two minor hits, The Devil's Radio, and also, the best song on the album, When We Was Fab, a song that not only pokes some lighthearted and serious fun at Harrison's Beatle years, but has a tremendous musical style parody of their psychedelic era, calling to mind arrangements similar to I Am The Walrus and Strawberry Fields. It takes several listenings to really get what a masterpiece that song is.

The Devil's Radio is great because it has a profound spiritual message without leaning in the specific doctrinal tenants of Harrison's Hinduism. I say this with mixed feelings, since I am a Buddhist-Hindu and really enjoy a lot of his very doctrinal and propagandistic works. (True critics need to be human enough to "fall for things," even if they can be poked fun at artistically. In Harrison's case, his religion was a two-edged sword, it provided the inspiration and insight that made him a major and unique influence in the Anglo pop scene, but it also sometimes made him a bit sloppy and complacent.

Cloud specifically said in one interview that he did not want Cloud Nine to be dominated by spirituality, and he succeeded by having the album uplifted by his religion without it being heavy handed. (All that being said, I still like the heavy-handed stuff sometimes too.) The point is, in terms of the worldwide audience, Cloud Nine was perfect for absolutely mass consumption and platinum proportions while still retaining the great philosophical insights Harrison always benefitted from.

It also helps that he had the greatest backup band of all time. While George Harrison sang, played guitar and produced, he had Geoff Lynne coproduce and sing and play instruments, (he was the former create front-man for the Electric Light Orchestra who themselves had a massive career). Furthermore, on drums was his co-Beatle Ringo Starr. And if that weren't enough, Eric Clapton was the lead guitarist and Elton John was the Pianist (with regular contributions by Eighties Mega-Star, now often forgotten, Gary Wright). Given that backup band, it's hard to imagine how the album could go wrong.

Cloud Nine was a masterwork of marketing timing, producing, arranging, personnel management, spirituality and good old quality pop-rock. In some sense, given that Harrison had become a pretty successful film producer by then, in his own right, Cloud Nine probably represents the real Zenith of the solo career of Harrison, because, although All Things Must Pass will always remain the truly immortal work of Harrison's, it was still very much done in the supernova halo of the Beatles. Cloud Nine had proved with time and distance Harrison was a viable artist, and probably, the most important solo artist to come from the Beatles.

For a time it seemed that McCartney would have been by far the most important of the post-Beatles, however he fell far out of critical favor, and his solo work remains very dated and his following rather faded. Harrison fans hang on with a fervor that McCartney could not match. True, Double Fantasy represented a similar victory to Cloud Nine for John Lennon, a true breakout. And while Imagine remains Lennon's Immortal work, it too was also produced in the halo of the Beatles' recent breakup. Lennon's assassination may have prevented him from becoming the preeminent post-Beatle, since he said at the time of making Double Fantasy, that he felt like he'd just begun again and that "nothing's even been done yet."

An excellent piece of work....heads above his contemporaries....except for the "Traveling Willburys"

5 out of 5 stars LIKE AN OPULESCENT MOON ALL ALONE IN THE SKY OF A FOREIGN LAND. . ........2006-12-02

HARRISON WAS ALWAYS MY FAVORITE BEATTLE. UNLIKE HIS PRIMA DONNA BANDMATES, GEORGE WAS THE QUIET MUSICAL BACKBONE. HIS SOLO WORK IS SUPERB. THE TUNES THAT HE PENNED FOR THE BEATTLES WERE ALWAYS MY FAVORITES.

THIS ALBUM IS PERFECT. MY CHOICE TRACKS HERE ARE:

"SOME PLACE ELSE" WITH IT'S CIRCULAR GUITAR WORK AND GUTTING LYRICS, IT IS ENCHANTING BEYOND. . .

"BREATH AWAY FROM HEAVEN" THE ASIAN INFLUNENCE IS SO ACCURATE, YOU CAN LITERALLY SMELL THE OPIUM DENS. THE LYRICS, YET AGAIN, ARE ACE. ("LIKE AN OPULESCENT MOON ALL ALONE IN THE SKY OF A FOREIGN LAND" LYRICS DON'T GET MUCH BETTER.)

MY ONLY ISSUE WITH THIS ALBUM IS ITS COVER. YUCK. HE LOOKS LIKE ON OF THE GIBB BROS. GROSS.

I AM GLAD TO SEE THE TITLE TRACK FROM HIS WORK ON THE FILM, SHANGHAI SURPRISE. WHATEVER ONE THINKS ABOUT THE ILL-FATED FILM (WHICH HAPPENS TO BE A GUILTY PLEASURE FOR ME), THE MUSIC IS FIRST RATE AND TRULY ENCOMPASSES A GEOGRAPHICAL SOUNDSCAPE.

GEORGE HARRISON WAS AN UNDERRATED MUSICAL GENIUS. BUY THIS REMASTER. YOU WILL BE HUMMING ALONG FOR YEARS. A WORTHY BUY.

Unless your name is Ryan Adams, you're probably not in the habit of releasing four albums in four years, let alone the same number in one. But that's exactly what the Beatles did in 1965, thanks to Capitol Records' practice of mixing and matching tracks from their U.K. releases to create new, shorter records for the American market. Because standard-issue Beatles discs follow the British discography, The Capitol Albums, Vol. 2 marks the first CD appearance of The Early Beatles (March), Beatles VI (June), the Help! soundtrack (August), and the U.S. version of Rubber Soul (December), which are presented in both mono and stereo. And since the Brits' Please Please Me and Beatles for Sale are available only in mono, that means a lot of tracks are making their stereo CD debut here, including "Please Please Me," "Twist and Shout," "Kansas City/Hey Hey Hey Hey," "What You're Doing," and "Every Little Thing." This is also the first CD appearance of Ken Thorne's incidental music from Help! (James Bond intro, anyone?), as well as of the original wide-separation stereo mixes of Help! and Rubber Soul (not the 1987 George Martin digital remixes that appear on the British discs). All told, a full 82 of this set's 92 tracks have never before been available on CD. It's not quite the sonic revelation that was Vol. 1 (that box contained 32 stereo CD debuts, this one only 14), but it's a great listen nevertheless. Also included is a colorful, 60-page booklet featuring rare photos and liner notes by Beatles historian Bruce Spizer. --Benjamin Lukoff

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Sound.......2007-07-09

I am an American Beatles fan who grew up in the 60's and 70's, so I am of course more than familiar with the Capitol albums. In those days that's what you got right? I had never heard of 'With the Beatles' or 'Beatles for Sale'. For me it was 'Meet the Beatles' and 'Beatles 65' and 'Beatles VI'etc. It was the black rainbow label and later that ugly lime green label. I spent my childhood and teen years discovering this great music. It wasn't until later that I realised that these weren't the real albums. When I found out that Rubber Soul begins with 'Drive my Car' and not 'I've Just Seen a Face', and the Help album doesn't really have Beatle songs played by Indian session musicians, but real songs.. and 14 of them, I felt ripped off. I was thrilled when the real Parlaphone issues came out on CD, and I retired my vinyl Capitol albums and bought the entire Parlaphone catologue on CD. But surprisingly these new CDs didn't sound the same as the Capitol albums. The songs were in the right order but they were in mono, and I was used to my stereo albums. (We always had a stereo, as early as 1964). I did get used to the different sound of the CDs, and grew to love them. However now the Capitol Albums are back, fully remastered and in both stereo and mono! There are about 32 tracks on each CD in this box, so the first half is in stereo and the second half is in mono. You get the American Capitol versions of Beatles VI,(always a favorite of mine) Help, The Early Beatles (remember that one?) and Rubber Soul. Because they were remastered, both the stereo and mono tracks sound incredible, and very different from each other, so you are getting a lot for your money. They also sound different from the Parlaphone CDs. Each Cd comes in the original sleeve with the original artwork, and it comes with a little booklet which gives some interesting info. I still love my British Parlaphone CDs, but it's nice to have this boxed set (and Volume 1 also) just for the quality of the sound. It's also nice to have for nostalgic reasons also. A lot of fans have argued for the stereo versions, and were angry when EMI chose to issue the mono only Cds, and on the other hand, a lot of purists ( the Beatles included) have argued that the mono versions are the REAL versions, and therefore the only ones that matter. I personally love both. I think some songs sound better in stereo, and in some, ( 'I Feel Fine' and "She's A Woman' especially) the mono versions are better. But with both mono and stereo, you are getting different mixes of each song, and for most of the songs, both versions are wonderful. You can hear certain instruments or vocals better on various versions, for instance on 'You Like Me Too Much',John's electric pianet really stands out in one of the versions (can't remember if it's the stereo or mono). The vocals on the stereo version of 'Baby's in Black'(on volume 1) are high in the mix, while the vocals on the mono version sound different. The Help and Rubber Soul cds in this set sound incredible, and yes on Help you still have to lift up the needle, oops, I mean skip the tracks that feature those film soundtrack versions of Beatle songs. Whether you are hearing stereo or mono, every note can be heard. Everything is clear, and these cds are louder so you don't have to turn up the volume, like I've found I needed to do on the Parlaphone cds. If you are into remastered sound, you will love this boxed set and don't forget to buy Volume 1 also, because that's fantastic too. Actually some of this review talks about Volume 1, so it's worth it to have both. My only question is, where is the 'Beatles Yesterday and Today?' That album is conspicuously absent from this set. This is disappointing. I hope this means there will be a Volume 3 somewhere down the road.

1 out of 5 stars Poor sound effect on this Capital Vol.2!!.......2007-06-03

I got this CD set from Hong Kong HMV and these are the EU version. They has the problem -"the fake sound effect on Rubber soul(I'm Looking Through you-Stero version)". That made me upset! Are they kiding and cheating all our Beatles Fan??!

Capital Vo1. 1 is better than Vol.2 a lot! Especially the sound effect. Do not waste your money to buy this CD set !

I hope EMI will issue a CD version of "Rock and Roll Music" & "Love Songs" from the LP Version!

Actually, the British version of all the Beatles LP and CD are the best!

3 out of 5 stars 4 months to get replacement .......2007-05-11

Hey be careful buying this,,Took me only 4 months to get correct Rubber soul, and Beatle vI replacement discs..and last I checked in May 2007 Emi 1-800 phone number for replacement discs has been disconnected..read early reviews of this title to understand that you are looking for sk1 on yellow sticker ..3 stars for slow EMI handling of this

5 out of 5 stars Beatles are the Best........2007-02-22

This is everything that it is advertised to be. The updated, scratch-free productions are superb. Some listeners will be annoyed at the stereophonic mixing of voice and instruments. But you have to remember to enjoy the hundreds of great tunes the Beatles created in their careers. The songs are what you will remember. I never heard the entire sound track to Help before, and it is very interesting and creative. It shows George Martin at his best.

5 out of 5 stars Great stuff!! Amazing Sound! Stop all the Griping!!!.......2007-02-19

I held off buying this fantastic set after reading tons of reviews on here The reviews seemed to either be 5 stars or 1 star, with little in-between. After receiving the set and giving it a good listen, I feel it is every bit as good as Vol 1.

Yes, it's not perfect. Capitol virtually made their "own" "Rubber Soul", by choosing their own songs and giving the finger to George Martin's original British release. And yes, there is that infamous "false start" on the stereo version of "I'm Looking Through You." Which leaves a lot of people screaming for their money back. (Personally i thought the false start was actually a "great start" guess it depends on who's listening.)

BUT, for all you people on here that have picked this set apart piece by piece, why can't you just "chill out" and enjoy what is great about the set, that being the amazing stereo sound. (I could care less about the mono's. It's kinda like someone handing you the keys to a Lexus or to a Huandyi Accent, and telling you to take your pick. (i.e. mono vs stereo)
I grew up listening to stereo, frankly, I always thought a lot of the Beatle mono's were kinda "muffled" for a long time. (Stuff like No Reply, for instance. Now we can really hear them, the songs just "jump out and grab you". Also, what if you had to listen to all the great songs like Come Together, Let It Be, and Revolution (all the post Revolver stuff, beginning with "Pepper"), in plain mono, I don't think it would be the same do you? Rest my case.

If you don't believe it, line your songs up on your I-pod to play one mono song, then next play the same song in stereo, (you won't be able to listen to over 30 seconds of the mono songs until you just have to hit the "next" button on your i-pod/MP-3.) The amazing stereo will make you say, WOW!, what have i been missing!

Yeah, maybe some of this stereo stuff is manufactured. I don't know, I don't know if anyone can prove it, I really don't care, I like what I hear!!!

I don't really care for all the extra fillers on HELP, with the extra instrumental tracks, but they are interesting. I just erased them when going to my MP-3.

Bottomline, If you don't like the box, sell it to someone does, and quit your "bitching", hell they put both versions on here to try to please everybody. Yeah, Capitol is like every other record company, the al-mighty dollar rules over anything that makes sense, but damn I don't think the set warrants all the incredible negativity it is getting on here.

I just hope we see Vol 3, if Capitol and Apple don't slit each other's throat over the confusion/disagreements over this Vol 2.

I say BUY THE SET!!! Any fan, whether casual or hard-core should enjoy most every part of this set!

By the way, if you're wondering which songs are STILL NOT released in stereo, (and hopefully will be the VOL 3, I will list them for you below:

The only two remaning Capitol LP's/Cd's are Yesterday and Today and Revolver. (plus the hits masters 1 and 2) (of which most of the songs are already in stereo.), except for I'm Down and From Me To You.

The entire Revolver LP/CD, including, in alphabetical order, And Your Bird Can Sing, Dr. Robert, Eleanor Rigby, For No One, Good Day Sunshine,Got To Get You Into My Life, Here,There,And Everywhere, I Want To Tell You,I'm Only Sleeping, Love You Too, She Said,She Said, Taxman,Tommorrow Never Knows, and Yellow Sub.

Also, the "Yesterday and Today" LP, also the infamous "butcher cover", with the songs not already on Revolver: If I Needed Someone,Yesterday, We Can Work It Out, What Goes On, Act Naturally, Nowhere Man, Drive My car, and Day Tripper.

Finally, the rest: I Should Have Known Better, Can't Buy me Love,(which were on the "Hey Jude LP"), and A Hard Day's Night, From Me To You, I'm Down, Misery, and There's A Place.

If I omitted any songs let me know!

Can't Wait For Vol 3!!!!

Enjoy your box set!!! And LONG LIVE THE BEATLES!!! The greatest rock and roll band that ever lived and ever will live!!! Let's All keep the Music Alive!!! (Besides Yoko, Capitol, and Michael Jackson, all need the money).

Keep Rockn! rocknronnie

Mantram is Ravi Shankar's effort to set Sanskrit chants from ancient Hindu scriptures to music, and the result is a captivating mix of chant and music. Produced by George Harrison, this collection of mantras and prayers from the Vedas, Upanishads, and other scriptures powerfully transports the listener to a place of peace where it's possible to be one with the universe. It's as if a heavy, enveloping cloak of serenity falls from the dark, floating sounds of cello opening the CD. Shankar employs flute, tamboura, harp, and other instruments to accent the mighty "Om" thread that weaves itself through the cloth of this album, bringing together deep, ominous voices with delicate, earthly instruments. One looking for extensive Shankar sitar might be disappointed, but the beauty of this artist's creativity and spiritual vision sweeps one away into a larger, more meaningful listening experience. Highly recommended. --Karen Karleski

5 out of 5 stars Classy Indian Chants.......2007-07-24

This is an excellent reproduction of some of the religious chants in the Indian classical music tradition. The recitation and diction is clear and quite precise. A great introduction to religious chants for a novice taking interest in Indian classical music.

5 out of 5 stars Authentic Hindu Chants.......2007-06-14

This is the perfect CD for the beginner who wants to learn Hindu chanting. The words to each song are included in the jacket. The words are easy to understand for the most part given the complexity of the language. And most importantly, the music is hauntingly beautiful. I knew this was a winner when I saw Harrison as producer.

5 out of 5 stars George and Ravi combine worship and melody for a one-of-akind experience.......2007-05-04

Ravi Shankar and George Harrison are two of this world's greatest composers and musicians, so it makes sense that a unified effort would be incredible. It is, but not just because of these two men... To backtrack a little, my Mom and Dad first bought this CD when I was about five; it had George Harrison's name under the word producer and (I think) they were beginning to be interested in the Hindu faith. In those days, and for many years, I had no idea what the words they were saying meant. I was simply captivated by the repeated, strange phrases and the beautiful music they were set to. The music is still one of my favorite parts of the CD and without it, the CD would barley be half of what it is, but now being much older I have had the opportunity to delve into the booklet inside the CD case. These words, whether traditional or written by Ravi Shankar are a beauty in and of themselves. Each one prays for spiritual enlightenment, better knowledge of a diety or knowledge and wisdom in general. The recurring theme of peace and safty/tranquility among all things is also welcome. An example of this earnest praying is "O,Lord lead me from the unreal to the real. Lead me from the darkness to the light [from ignorance to knowledge]. Lead me from death to immortality. May there be peace, peace and perfect peace" ( from track 4, Asato Maa.) Also to be carefully headed are those chants which dwell proper human action, such as "You have but the right to perform action; you have no hold on the results thereof. May you not seek the rewards of action and may you never engage in wrong action.[This is not an excuse for inaction!" ( track 9, Geetaa.) There are other varied but always interesting chants here: instructions by a guru or teacher for his students (track 3, Vedic Chanting One), chants praising certain gods, and most fascinating of all, chants wishing for peace and tranquility. These such as Mangalam (track 11) and Sarve Shaam (track 16 and a huge favorite), combined with beautiful instrumental interludes (those who have seen 'Concert for George' may be reminded of Arpan), and the exquisite instrumentation and production by George Harrison (rest in Son of Hari!) come together to make a sublime and deep, enlightening musical experience. This truly a gorgeous album, incredible to listen to (though to get it just for the beatiful instruments, or the name of the producer for that matter, would be to miss the point.) If I tried to list favorites I'd probably end up listing the whole album. Here are a few highlights: Vandanaa Trayee, the opening track and a beautiful combination of introductory music, three sepearte prayers and interludes, tracks 3 and 14, the two vedic chants, Mangalam, a prayor for peace, and the similar Sarve Shaam, Asato Maa, tracks 5, 7, and 8 (7/8 CAN get repetative after a while,12 and 13 ( atmospheric intstrumental trackss), Geetaa, and a Ravi Shankar original Prabhujee. This, track 15 of 16, is a wondefully melodic, well-produced and warming, beautiful prayer for divine enlightenment and is worth a good listen. Track 2 has an interesting concept to it as well. All in all, this album is a wonderful buy for those interested in Hindu chants, beatuiful music or just spritual enlightenment. Well produced, beautiful instruments, deep, depth-filled chants- what more can the open minded listen want!? 5/5. Om shaantih, Shaantih, Shaantih [Amen; May there be peace, peace and perfect peace.]

5 out of 5 stars uplifting.......2007-04-06

Very peaceful and relaxing music. I got it because I am a George Harrison fan and have seen both George and Ravi Shankar in concert. I also wanted to experience more indian religous music.

5 out of 5 stars Chants Of India: Ravi Shankar.......2007-04-01

This is one of my most cherished disks. I find the Sanskrit mantras rendered in Ravi Shankar's compositions, as well as the traditional Vedic chanting heard on this disk, definitive and powerfully moving. Additonally, the modern-style love song to God, "Prabhujee", features beautiful words and melody over George Harrison's acoustic guitar chording, evoking deep feeling, longing for the Divine.

When I bought this disk years ago, it came with a booklet featuring extensive liner notes, including the Sanskrit portions written in the Devanagari script, with transliterations and translations by Panditjee himself. This disk has thereby proven itself a great resource in my studies of Sanskrit, enabling me to read - and therefore properly pronounce - these important verses. I hope this information is still provided in the disk, as a version I bought in India omitted these extensive texts.

When the Beatles catalog was first issued on CD in the '80s, an attempt was made to standardize the releases (which often varied wildly in content internationally) by using their original British format. But this confounded many Fabs fans in the U.S. who now found CDs with track listings that often differed dramatically from their original American LPs. More maddening, the initial four releases were only available in not-so-glorious mono mixes. This four-CD collection of the band's 1964 American album releases finally addresses those concerns, and then some. Meet the Beatles, The Beatles Second Album, Something New, and Beatles '65 have been digitally prepared from Capitol's vintage album masters and presented in both the original stereo and mono mixes released back in '64. This set gives younger fans a chance to finally hear the band's epochal early music in stereo--and should please an older generation by returning massive hit singles like "I Want to Hold Your Hand," "She Loves You," "She's a Woman," and "I Feel Fine" to their original American album contexts. The booklet contains a wealth of rare photos and concise notes by noted Beatles historian Mark Lewisohn. --Jerry McCulley

3 out of 5 stars Ok, but not great........2007-07-22

This set is ok if you don't have the CDs of the earlier British Beatles albums. If you do have them, this isn't really worth it. The sound quality is very good, though.

5 out of 5 stars Dance to exhaustion.......2007-07-18

This music is bright and happy and a lot of fun. It cheers me up and I dance till exhaustion. Now I know where all the sixties music went.

5 out of 5 stars Beatles - Capital Years Vol 1-.......2007-05-31

I bought Vol 1 and 2 to replace my record collection. I was not disappointed. The sound quality is great and the mini albums are exact replicas of the originals.

5 out of 5 stars About damn time!.......2007-03-14

Even though I have all the 1987 CD's,I still bought this set. And I couldn't be happier! The set sounds great,Duophonic,Real Stereo or Mono. The packaging is stellar, each CD in the set in a reproduction of the original US album sleeve, with the CD label reproduction of the vinyl label (for the most part-the Capitol logo should've been at the top of the label...but so what). The booklet, however, could've been longer...but that's my opinon. Buy this set,as well as Volume 2. You will not be disappointed! (Here's hoping Capitol does a Volume 3!)

5 out of 5 stars America! Bring on the reverb!.......2007-03-04

Debate all you want the merits of the British versions versus the American versions, but the first time I heard "I Feel Fine" (on my big sister's original Capitol 45) it was bathed in echo and reverb. So was the flip "I Feel Fine." And didn't these versions sound great coming over the tinny transistor radio? You bet your Beatle Boots they did!

Years later when the CDs came out we were "treated" to the British versions (as the Beatles intended), we got to hear those two songs (on Past Masters Vol. 1) dry and stripped of the echo and reverb. I was stunned. So that's how they were supposed to sound, eh? I felt betrayed by the evil Capitol engineers.

Now it's a million years later and Capitol has the AUDACITY to release their original mixes. And you know what? Lay that reverb on me, baby. Douse me in echo! I'm a freakin' stupid clueless eight year old again!

What I didn't know didn't hurt me!

America: The land of milk and honey and REVERB!

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite CDs! Amazing Rock and Roll!.......2007-06-20

Let me start by saying that I am totally obsessed with this album. I have owned it for several years now and I never get tired of listening to it. I even bought the DVD of the concert after being blown away by the CD! True, I am a Baby Boomer. True, I grew up with the Beatles and Eric Clapton. But, for me, that was a very long time ago in so many ways. I am not "A Fan". I am a normal woman who likes music but would certainly never (under most circumstances) take the time to rate it here on Amazon. The point is, I can't remember the last time I listened to a recording that literally made the hair stand up on the back of my neck! This is amazing Rock and Roll and I defy anyone who claims to be unmoved by the magnitude of this music and the musicians who wrote, and now perform it. I have a new, deep appreciation for the performing artists that Paul McCartny, Ringo Star (yes, even Ringo!) and Jeff Lynn have become; the enduring relevance of the music of George Harrison, the composer; and the deep abiding faith that Eric Clapton is indeed GOD. Eric Clapton was the music director for this concert and the results are extraordinary. Especially wonderful are "Something" and "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" by Paul McCartney and Eric Clapton and "My Sweet Lord" by Billy Preston. Two "negatives": a great performance of "Horse to Water" by Jools Holland and Sam Brown is omitted from the CD and it would have been great if Bob Dylan had been able to be at the concert. That said, this is a great, historic concert by giants of Rock and Roll. It belongs in your library.

5 out of 5 stars Where's "HORSE TO WATER"?!?!?!.......2007-06-02

Have the DVD, bought the "soundtrack" for "Horse To Water" and guess what? IT'S NOT ON IT!!! What kind of "soundtrack" would eliminate, what to me, was one of the highlights of the concert (not to mention, "I'll See You In My Dreams"!) VERY DISAPPOINTED!!! This has ruined what would have been a "Classic CD" to me. Should have named this CD, "SELECTIONS from the CONCERT FOR GEORGE"... STILL 5 stars!

4 out of 5 stars Tribute to George.......2007-05-28

Disc 2 is a fabulous collection of music by artists paying tribue to the music of George. It is wonderful music-I would recommend it to anyone who loves the Beatles work and the music that George loved.

5 out of 5 stars Hard to beat!.......2007-03-09

The collection of talent and the performances on this 2-disc piece of work are exceptional. A superb tribute to an extraordinary artist. Harrison's ability and range were a marvelous contribution to music. Disc 2 alone is worth the bucks.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous tribute - amazing songs.......2007-01-14

So many people know GH that to add comment is hard, but this tribute concert reveals how Harrison affected the community of English players in his life - It's also great to hear versions of his songs that while true to form, come off in a new light as done by the Clapton-led band and remind us how prolific and original George was once he got out from under the shadow of John and Paul - he started humbly yet persisted with amazing discipline to create his own sound and style, which while not everyone's cup of tea, stands alone as significant work in the evolution of pop rock in the 20th century - may he rest in peace
