About the Artist
"I wanted to get back to the basics of rap," says the artist whose name - and life - is Real Drama. In the debut CD, Real Drama presents his vision of a life on the street, in prison - and beyond. "I give credit to God," he says, "He thought enough of me to keep me here". Real Drama grew up on the streets of his native Chicago, Houston and L.A. By 17, he was incarcerated in the penitentiary. After his release, subsequent arrests landed him in county jail and ultimately, back in the prison system. "I decided I had enough, had put my family through enough. I wanted to make a change and do something different." His life began its 180-degree turn. He visited the prison law library, doing research to start a business. In 1996, he and a business partner formed Realistic records. He left prison for good in 1997 and began promoting other artists. "Chronicles" is Real Drama's own story, about the daily life of a hustler and what makes him or breaks him. "A Hustler don't fold," he says. "We mold and adjust to any situation - and fold that which is becoming a conflict in your life. Everything is a lesson learned." Some rappers' lyrics substitute fantasy for reality, says Real Drama. "It's like they've jumped off the basis of talking about reality. Of course kids want to emulate that lifestyle - to have this and have that. I thought I wanted that, too, until I got caught up in it. I want my music to say, "Hey, you don't want to go through this." Humor is a part of life, too. "You can't be a gangster 24/7. Nobody can be mad all day, every day," he adds. "My music is about the basics of life." Also, these lines occurred to me while working with the material. Perhaps they could be incorporated somehow. It's time to get real. Real life. Real Drama. Get Real. Stay Real.
