Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars * ABSOLUTELY KILLER TROPICAL GROOVES *.......2006-07-08

This is a really, truly fantastic disc of (mostly) instrumental Jamaican grooves. At first blush "Alpha Boys' School" would appear to be a collection spanning the recording history of members and graduates of this famous orphanage, starting as it does with some nice 50s bop sides and ending with a 2002 recording of the school's anthem. Between these items, however, lies a rich vein of sweet, mostly instrumental Jamaican grooves from the peak of the island's classic era. Tracks five thru twenty hit an especially colorful time between the mid sixties and mid seventies, when ska morphed into rocksteady and on into reggae. Nowhere is this transition more smooth than on the instrumentals of the time, which always seemed to remain freer and less tethered to shifts in popular music than the vocals did, steeped as they were in jazzy brass lines, soulful organs, easy-skanking guitars, funky bass grooves, and frequent exotic spice in the form of flutes, vibraphones, or Nyahbinghi drumming. Going back to the brass, I should point out that the it was the very essence of the Alpha Boys School music program, and without it the world would have been deprived of the Skatalites, and as a result, the entire history of Jamaican music, from ska onward, as we know it.

Included here we have some skanky, funky uptempo stuff coupled with some preternaturally mellow island vibes. All of it is tied together by the soul/funk/jazz mixture which these musicians infused with the skanky rhythms dominant in Jamaica at the time. It is remarkable how permanently hip this stuff has managed to sound. Vin Gordon, Lester Sterling, Cedric Brooks, Bobby Ellis, Rico Rodruigez, Leroy "Horsemouth" Wallace, and a ton of others make glowing contributions to the proceedings, superb even by their own high stardards. Lodged in with these instrumental tracks is a great vocal tune, Johnny Osbourne's "The Warrior," the funky beat and soulful horn lines of which make it fit right in. A good vocal soul tune and two R&B/soul instrumentals round out the set, but they are not especially of a piece with the heart of this CD, and are best enjoyed separately, as are the surprisingly sophisticated bop sides which begin the disc. As is to be expected with Trojan, some pretty rare tunes mingle with some not so rare ones; more seasoned collectors will have to make their own determinations in this regard. Note, however, that there is sure sound improvement from previous releases. For instance, the tune "James Ray" is massively improved over the version on "Trojan Instrumentals Box Set." The liner notes are very good, and the artwork is quite beautiful. Best of all, Trojan has actually included the DATES OF RECORDINGS, something basic which, sadly, is missing from even premium-priced releases of this sort.

Jazzy, breezy, and at times near-psychedelic, I've found that this disc is something that I can listen to over and over without ever tiring of, and I find it especially bliss-inducing as a summer soundtrack. Listen to tracks five thru twenty as one album, and you will have a glorious, cohesive, and really invigorating aural experience. For fans of instrumental Jamaican music, this is a phenominal set to file right next to Heartbeat's "Downbeat The Ruler," Soul Jazz's "Studio One Scorcher" (volumes 1 & 2), Universal Sounds' "Jackie Mittoo:Keyboard King At Studio One, and the "Trojan Instrumentals" box set.

4 out of 5 stars A good overview of Zorn's soundtrack compositions........2005-10-24

Over the past twenty years or so, John Zorn has built up an enormous library of composition for film, released on sixteen CDs (cleverly titled "Filmworks I", "Filmworks II", and so on...) on his Tzadik record label. For a neophyte, this can be a bit much to tackle, as such, this album, "Filmworks Anthology: 20 Years of Soundtrack Music" has been released to provide an overview of Zorn's soundtrack composition.

As an overview of Zorn's work, this succeeds well. It also appears that another goal was to represent every volume, as at least one piece is drawn from each (volumes VI and VIII get two cuts, I and XII get three, and III and VII get four). Just about everything in Zorn's diverse catalog of film soundtracks is covered-- movies, documentaries, pornography, cartoons and commercials (certainly none I've seen!) are all represented with a suitably diverse array of pieces, from gamelan to string trios to surf rock, Zorn pretty much covers a wide array of sounds and moods-- if nothing else, the diversity of these 28 tracks is a testament to his vast skills to compose in virtually any environment. I could make a few arguments about what cuts I would have picked, but by-and-large, the compilation is a rather good and thorough overview, and the cast of performers is immense, with virtually all key players in the downtown scene involved to some extent or another.

Another notable point about this release is the artwork-- packed in a digipack with a pair of photos of Zorn (one from '86, one from '05) and stills from the various pieces littered throughout the liner notes, it certainly looks great. And speaking of the liner notes, Zorn offers a superb essay on film soundtrack composition and appreciations by musicians Marc Ribot, Anthony Coleman, Jamie Saft and Cyro Baptista (all of whom appear to some extent or another on the music) are included.

I've got currently about half of the filmworks series and I found value in this overview. Several of the individual pieces hold together far better than this recording does, but it certainly does a great job providing an impression of Zorn's diverse film scoring career.

5 out of 5 stars Curious about Zorn?.......2005-10-23

Considering myself a casual fan of John Zorn I have been at times either annoyingly put off or enthusiastically engaged with the diversity of his music. Admittedly, It can be daunting for a Zorn novice to find a suitable entry point in which to begin navigating through the extremities of his musical output. This new collection, which pulls material from the sixteen releases (thus far) of his FILMWORKS series, is everything the curious could want in a well-rounded introduction.

The selections chosen for this disc make for an exhilarating listening experience from start to finish as the focus jumps from one musical genre to the next, from cartoon scores to punk rock to jazz and surf music. Most selections early on clock in at under 4 minutes, with many others zipping by under just one. All these various styles meld together so effortlessly that it's impressive it all comes from a single creative mind.

The packaging is also deserving of mention, as the CD is housed in a fold-out digipack case with two booklets attached inside. In one of these booklets Zorn describes his methods and self-imposed rules in creating music for film (as well as for dealing with snoopy film directors). The other booklet features short essays by a few of Zorn's collaborators on what the creative sessions were like. There are also many photos from the films the music accompanies. (So far the only films I've seen with Zorn's scores are "Trembling Before G-D" and "Protocols of Zion".)

Favorite tracks: "Surfing Samba", "Arsenal Dance Mix", "Shanghai", "Main Title (Invitation to a Suicide)"

4 out of 5 stars The Real Six-String Samurai.......2001-06-06

Originally released on vinyl in 1975, this was the first album to document the six-string genius of the late Danny Gatton. Stylistically, it's all over the place, veering from rockabilly to jazz to blues to good old fashioned rock and roll, with the one constant being Gatton's fretboard wizardry. Fascinating and essential in that it provides an early glimpse of Gatton at the beginning of an artistic journey that would tragically end with his suicide in 1994. Recommended for fans of big guitars.

4 out of 5 stars An Oldie and a Goodie.......1999-10-11

I bought the vinyl of this when it first came out a bunch of years ago. The Harlem Nocturn is a must listen! It's amazing what a stir Danny and the Fat Boys created in the D.C. metro area back then. Roy Bucannan was playing down at "My Mothers Place", Danny was playing around at various venues, it was exciting, especially for a guitar-phile like myself. This album may not be one of the best he ever put out, but...it was one of the first. He was explosive then, and his vintage improved with the passing years. If you collect, get this. I picked up the CD after the LP wore out.

5 out of 5 stars Hawk in the 40's........2007-05-19

This is a nice compilation of Hawkins in the 40's. That period was probably the most fertile for Hawkins as he swung hard and helped to usher in the bop era of jazz. After all, he was the first to record Monk. But no matter what style of jazz you like, Hawkins playing was excellent in all of these small band recordings. Confident and curious,he personified what jazz should be all about:exploring.

4 out of 5 stars Compilation of very different recordings here.......2003-09-06

Prestige issued its 'Historical Series' in the late 1960s, and this CD is a compilation of tracks from them. Strangely titled "Bean and the Boys", since that was the name of one of the LPs - one which featured the Hawk in bop, with Monk and Fats Navarro, the first four tracks on this CD are anything but bop; they come from the "Walter 'Foots' Thomas All-Stars" recording, and they are great, but its Swing. Hey, if you don't mind jarring segues from great Swing to a bop quartet (heck, Hawk did it) you should like this reissue. Me, I like my reissues a little more coherent. If you like the 'samples' "Out To Lunch" and "Look Out, Jack" - check for a reissue of the Walter "Foots" Thomas All-Stars, one of the best recordings ever.
