Wicked Tinkers

About the Artist
The Wicked Tinkers are made up of Aaron Shaw on the Great Highland Bagpipe. Aaron is an award-winning piper and records for films, TV, and with artists Bonnie Raitt, Forest For the Trees, and others. He is a member of the L.A. Police Pipe Band and lives in Hollywood, where he also teaches bagpipes. John Macadams has recorded and played everything from concert band music to bubble punk. He has performed on TV and in films, and also appears in the Irish group Craicmore. Warren Casey has been a folk drummer and dancer for 20 years in styles as varied as Bulgarian, Macedonian, Irish and Scottish. Warren builds many of the drums he plays.

Album Description

"BANGER* FOR BREAKFAST", is Wicked Tinker's fourth attempt at music recording. It's live and raw - like you'll usually find us at the Scottish Highland Games. "Banger" originally started out with 60 hours of music recorded live across the country. We whittled it down to a couple hours of our greatest hits. This first of two CDs, is a bunch of favorites snatched from our three previous releases, with ten new tunes thrown in to boot. All this in one tribal-thumping CD. You'll find your body moving against your consent.

This disk give the listener a great idea of what it's like to be at a Wicked Tinkers performance.

Considering the quality of the concert performances that the Tinkers do in their live shows and considering that this CD is a compilation of several live shows, you get more than your money's worth with this disk.

My kids are hooked on this band!.......2006-09-06

My family saw this band play live at the Pleasanton Highland Games, where they were incredibly energetic and fun to watch. Something like a bagpipe jazz combo. This CD does a good job of capturing some of that energy (though you should try to catch them in the flesh if they ever play in your neighborhood!). My kids are simply hooked on this music. They can't stop twirling and stomping to it, and my older one has declared that she wants to learn the bagpipes! Beware - this music needs to be played LOUD. You may scare the neighbors. Just fab.

live and raw.......2006-03-19

This is another great live CD, recorded in many sessions and locations, and brought together in a "best-of" format. Track 3 has an excellent drum feature, and track 5 (Danny Boy) is well done, as is the Amazing Grace Plus in track 15. One item to note is the brief explanation of the roots of the bagpipes in track 6, which leads into an unusual Middle Eastern special song in track 7. This CD, like their Whisky Supper album, contains several moments of conversations with the crowd and among the bandmates of Wicked Tinkers. This lends it a cozier listen than just a "dry" album, or a concert arena sound. With the combination of tracks available on other CDs, plus new ones makes this a great starter CD, especially for fans of Celtic music, bagpipes in particular. The addition of their "trademark" didgeridoo (explained in and featured on track 22) makes this a must-have, unusual collection of traditional songs with new takes, and uniquely varied material. You can't miss with this one!

Banger for Breakfast.......2006-03-18

I don't think there's another band like the Wicked Tinkers in existence. Super-high-energy, with a huge bagpipe/drums/sometimes didgeridoo sound, they reinfuse life into a subgenre of traditional folk music that sometimes lacks energy and innovation. It's impossible to sit still while listening to this. I saw a clip of the band at a Scottish Faire in Northern California on TV and was immediately hooked (well done of one of the band members to have a T-shirt on with the band's name, otherwise I would never have known who they were).

I've loved all of the Tinkers' albums and this one is no exception.

WHISKY SUPPER, is our fifth CD, “ALMOST LIVE” the companion to BANGER FOR BREAKFAST. We have found that our live recordings seem to really capture who we are, musically and dynamically. On this recording, we had Tyler Spencer re-record the didgeridoo parts - hence ALMOST LIVE. We are an interactive band; we try to engage with our audiences so an instrument or two might get quieter or louder at some points. Don't worry, one or another of us is probably playing on someone's table or having a quick 'beverage' in the middle of a set. Monterey Games.......2007-05-15

I first saw the Wicked Tinkers with my family at the August 2002 Monterey Games and greatly enjoyed the band. They are fabulous live. I have since bought everything that they have released. To this day my kids still ask for bagpipe music and dance about the house to it. This CD does a fair job of capturing the feel of their concert. It needs to be played LOUD (name of one of their other CDs) though to get a true feel. It is one of the best live CDs I have.

eclectic celtic cavalcade.......2006-03-13

This CD is a great companion to the Banger For Breakfast CD, as both have very similar settings, i.e. live in front of fans in a tight atmosphere. For any fans of Irish or Scottish traditional music, this is a must have. But better yet, it's updated with what initially seems like odd pairings of instruments, like the bagpipes and the didgeridoo. Once you listen to how well those sounds plus snares, etc. meld into a wonderful set of tunes, however, you will look at Celtic music in an entirely different way. Plus, the band inserts humor and jokes, sometimes at their own expense, that gives their performances a funny and relaxed feeling. Each song is uniquely rendered but still has that familiarity that makes this genre of music so appealing. You simply can't go wrong with this one, from the nearly dirty poem to a new style Radar Love, and will quickly become a huge fan of the Tinkers. At nearly one hour in length, it will leave you wanting more. Thankfully, they have plenty more available!

HAMMERED is the Wicked Tinkers second CD and gets its name from the second tune on the album, "Hammer on the Anvil" (or that persistent pounding you hear listening to their drums and pipes). There are a few tunes and songs that could be considered slow and beautiful, although the Tinkers don't advocate such things. If you liked the first CD, we think you will love this one. The Wicked Tinkers say "Most tunes on this CD are from the Highlands of Scotland, where the music we love was born. A few of the tunes are Irish (Warren's heritage), who we feel are brothers to the Scots. Some tunes are Canadian (where our own John MacAdams hails from), a very Scottish place. Why on earth the Tinkers, who are otherwise terrific performers, chose to include an infantile vocal track (the kind considered risque at the elementary school level) defies the imagination....and then to repeat it in garbled form as the final track! Their first CD was a true revelation.....this one's a bummer.

If you've never been to a highland games, or never experienced Celtic music and boundless energy, listen to the Wicker Tinkers FIRST! The music is incredible, the energy and showmanship is UNBELIVEABLE. If you get a chance to see these guys play live, stop everything and GO. We bought all three CD's and am hoping for more.

The Wicked Tinkers represent the real spirit of the Highlands. It's not the music you hear from the pipe bands on the field. It's what you'd hear at the Caleigh afterwards. It's wild and it is [sensual]! You feel the drums in your body and hear the pipes in your soul. The addition of Wayne Belger on the didgeridoo adds a primal element that sets them apart and makes the music truly unique. Keep your eye on these boys, they're going to go all the way!

The music is very hi quality, fun, and unashamedly uplifting!

The kind of music you think of when you want good time with great friends!

Just the thing you want to hear when you are feeling down or need that boost to get you thru the day.

And let the naysayers sit at home and nit pick about the singing all they want...songs like "I Will Go" will move you!

Especially if you are a serviceman or a serviceman's family member.

2 wrecked eardrums.......2006-08-08

These guys are amazing. I got to see them at the local Highland Games in my area last month. They throw one hell of a live performace. I picked up two of their CDs at the games, and just recently purhased two others. This album is particularly intriguing, as it introduces the brass horn, along with the digderidoo... which make for a very interesting blend along with the pipes. I think sometimes the low bass of the didge muddles some of the other sounds, but I could care less... this albums is pretty high energy, with excellent piping, and relentless drums. Wiked Tinkers, and Loud have barely left my CD player since I bought them. My favorite tracks on this particular album are # 4,5,and 6..Gaelic Aire, 6/8 Marches, and I Will Go. I would disregard the disdain others have shown for the vocal tracks. They aren't that bad, and add some variety...and seem very earnest at heart. I see nothing wrong with that. If you like bagpipes, chances are you will like this...a strong 3rd release from these guys, check it out if you get the chance.

want to dance?.......2006-03-17

This CD makes a person who doesn't know how to dance WANT to learn. They are very energic and it is contagious!! "Whisky Supper" and "Wicked Tinkers" are also great CD"s. Saw them at White Horse Coffee & Tea Co. at Sutherlin, Oregon.They performed outside in heat over 100 degrees and it didn't slow them down a bit.

Eclectic and exciting.......2005-08-04

I agree- the Tinkers have a style all their own that is dynamic and exciting. I love that while the music is primitive it also has great technical elements. How does he play so fast?! This was my first Tinkers CD and I still like it best- in part /because/ of the vocals. It's a good contrast to occasionally have a context for the music and there are definitely much worse vocalists than Mr. Shaw out there. Yes, the CD's are not as great as a live performance. I concede that it's very difficult indeed to capture guys in kilts dancing on pub tables (while they're playing) on a CD. Because Tinkers have so much "personality" the CD isn't a perfect substitute, but it will at least sustain you until the band returns to your area.

Saw them live, bought the cd, and now I have hours of bagpipes blowing out my truck windows. The drums, various drones, and occasional vocals add to the variety. I love 'em!

The Wicked Tinkers' first album exploded onto the music scene in 1995. Undefinable, they created their own genre of traditional celtic tunes, similar to the old Gaelic roving pipe-and-drum bands, done with their own contemporary idiosynrasies. I have been attending scottish events for 7 years, and I always hear this band playing. They are great people, but their music is far from great. If you desire more musicality than loud abnoxious drumming... nay... bashing, check out the band Bad Haggis. If you liked the music on Braveheart, you will love them.

I first encountered the Wicked Tinkers playing in a San Francisco alley. I was blown away by their primal drumbeat and screaming pipes and their enthusiasm was catching. I've always enjoyed Celtic sounds, but never heard anything quite like this.

As soon as I got home, I ordered this CD. I think it captures their sound very well. Its been a favorite ever since.

If you like bagpipes, these guys will absolutely blow you away. They use the pipes with other traditional Scots instruments and create there own specialized sound. It has a more rock beat, while retaining all the bagpipes. Simply great for exercising to!! I defy any Scots lass to listen to this and not want to get up and rock to the unique rhythm.

If you love the pipes, these guys are going to blow your mind. Not the massed band sounds of many bagpipe CDs, these guys sound more like what you'd have heard at a gathering back in Scotland. Not just the bagpipes; there's the uillean pipes, the bodhran (drum) the iron horn, at least one anvil/hammer combo, and much more. Good fun.

The Wicked Tinkers are a pipe & drum trio. Their incredible energy breathes new life into traditional melodies. They also add many new tunes to the mix. If you have the chance, it is well worth seeing them in person, as well. Look out for them at Scottish festivals all over the country. Braveheart meets Metallica aka HEAVY Bagpipes.......2000-04-27

Thier motto is "Scottish Bagpipes & Drums in Your Ears" Thier music is intense and fun. This isn't you're father's bagpipe band. It is the old tunes (and new) tunes of celtic fair with a rock attitude and a good dose of humor. If you can't see them live this is the next best thing. If you grew up with rock and enjoy the traditional pipe tunes too this CD is for you. PS on thier new CD "Hammered" they do a cover of "Radar Love" which is a awsome.
