Editorial Reviews
Award-winning entertainer Judy Pancoast is an acclaimed childrens musical artist. Hailed by parents as, "filling the void between Barney and Britney," Pancoast composes age-appropriate songs for pre-teen children, which she performs at concerts, festivals, schools and other venues throughout the United States.
Pancoast, who has performed twice for the President of the United States, has a vocal style that has been compared to that of the late Karen Carpenter; and it was, in fact, Carpenter whose records Judy listened to the most during her formative years. Pancoast has been a solo performing artist, the leader of two popular bands, and a successful radio announcer for many years. Her natural ease with children and belief that they receive an invaluable education through music led her to pursue and attain a teaching degree. It was then that the confluence of her musical ability, her ability to inspire children and her sense of humor resulted in her acclaimed series of original recordings and renowned childrens concerts.
Since beginning her USA concert and school tours in 1996, Pancoast has produced four popular collections of her songs. Her innovative song writing won her the coveted Childrens Music Web "Best Song for Young Children" award three times in 1999 for her song Swimming in Jello , again in 2000 for The Potty Dance and then again in 2004 for One Big Eyeball. Her 1998 recording, Candy, won a Parents Choice Award and her 2002 CD, KidPop!, has been endorsed by the Coalition for Quality Childrens Media. She next released Koo Koo! in September 2003, and received a best song of 2003 nod for I Love the Rain from KIOS FM (Oregon public radio). As a special project, Pancoast produced The House on Christmas Street, a CD of original Christmas tales and songs that has been hailed by reviewers as "capturing a spirit of joy and innocence without the calculated syrup of Hollywood or Madison Avenue."
In 2003 and again in 2004, Pancoast performed at the New York A-list fundraiser for the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric Aids Foundation. Stars Julianne Moore, Natalie Portman, Whoopi Goldberg, Diane Sawyer, Ellen Barkin, James Gandolfini and others joined hundreds of children who were entertained by her popular and interactive musical concert at the Kids for Kids Carnival. Judy followed up with performances at this years Tribeca Film Festival Family Street Fair. This May, Pancoast traveled to Nairobi, Kenya, for a week-long workshop, where she and the children of the Nyumbani Orphanage wrote, performed and made a studio recording of two original songs. Both songs got their U.S. premiere in September at the annual Washington DC Nyumbani Benefit, which was hosted by "Hardballs" Chris Matthews and his wife, Kathleen Matthews.

With Foley Room, Montreal's Amon Tobin throws his torch in with the blazing tradition of full-length works composed in the majority with found sounds. Having formerly made his name as a craftsman of vinyl samples into towering rhythmic dynamos like his fin-de-siècle LP, Supermodified, Tobin tries sampling the world for himself. With microphone in hand and his tape console slung over his shoulder, he captures the timbre of factories, a massive satellite dish, and local avant-garde improvisers with equal zest. One loping highlight comes early in "Big Furry Head," when during a token trip-hop lead-in--all reverb, squiggle, and over-compressed drumbeat--a tiger's hungry growls tears new life across the frequency spectrum, signaling the abyss-deep thump of Tobin's next new groove. Whether he's wandering through lush, meandering string workouts ("Bloodstone") or more aggressive avenues toward beauty ("Ever Falling"), Tobin's gait is ever informed by the beat. But where some contemporary found-sound sculptures like Matthew Herbert's Plat du Jour keep a more strident sampling ethos in the service of musical politics, Tobin's approach clearly reeks with a love of sound manipulation as its own reward: every process an adventure, each completed work a revelation. --Jason KirkAlbum Description
Electronic beatmaking legend Amon Tobin reinvents himself on Foley Room, an album meticulously created from field recordings and other found sounds. Still very much an Amon record, but with fresh new underlying sounds. Includes bonus DVD documenting the process.Customer Reviews:
I DON'T LIKE IT (It needs a negative review).......2007-07-12
I wanted the grass to get greener and this was never the case. I also search for something in music that I might enjoy, or even a singular sound that I can sample and exploit.
This album failed to entertain me, or make me feel energized. Even with the hope of discovering some cool sounds it is a total let down.
o.0.......2007-07-08
There's some symphony stuff going on as well, guitars too, chimes, synthesizers, vocals, pretty much everything... and none of it sounds familiar. Once all this settles in you have a very replayable CD.
When I first heard Amon Tobin I listened to Out From Out Where and then bought his others. They were all good, but this one stands out a little because the structures of the songs are pretty random, but they make sense somehow. I barely notice any repetition on Foley Room. If I listen to Permutation or Bricolage it is very noticable by comparison.
Electronic music is a genre with a lot of sub-genres and is expanding all the time. It's difficult because like computers themselves, electronic music is always getting updated and you have to keep up with the times. However some people are continually able to bring something fresh that has a new sound. This is one of those cds that actually gets better the 4th or 5th time around.

2007? Try 2307.......2007-05-09
I have a deep love for the album format and 'Foley Room' further defines this affection. It allows for structure and limitations to encourage discipline and creativity. The music here is like the intensity of a beautifully emotional 500 lb. beast trapped within a metal cage where he barely fits and has only one small air hole. He is angry and dents the structure while trying to free himself. He becomes hopeless realizing this is impossible. He ponders his life, becomes bitter and angry again. Somehow, we feel like he got himself into this.
Take that for what you will, but the only album I can compare this to is 'Endtroducing...' and that is a stretch because this is much more intense and the songs are mostly shorter in length (my only gripe because these songs could be of brilliantly epic length to match the mood). But the darkness and emotion is evident and delves deeper into actual human psyche than I'd say nearly ALL of, at least, electronic music.
Amon Tobin has officially been ordained into the vanguard of music's elite.

Walking Tune: The Music of Charles Amirkhanian
Manufacturer: Starkland ProductGroup: Music Binding: Audio CD ASIN: B000002GVG Release Date: 1998-02-03 |
Tracks:
- Chu Lu Lu
- Bajanoom
- Vers Les Anges
- Gold And Spirit
- Walking Tune (A Room-Music For Percy Grainger)
Album Description
Laurie Anderson describes the music on Walking Tune as "descriptive, specific, lush, and oddly exotic." The composer is Charles Amirkhanian, a leading practitioner of electroacoustic music and text-sound composition, and an "expert at the sort of thing his imitators do not do half so well as he" (The New York Times). "The art of audio collage has been reinvented here," writes Anderson. "I'm reminded of Brian Eno's music for imaginary films, although Charles takes this idea much farther."The CD presents the premiere recording of one of Amirkhanian's most well-known and warmly received works, Walking Tune - A Room-Music for Percy Grainger. Anderson comments:
"Mixing the real and the imaginary is a skill that very few composers have. Charles jumps back and forth between these worlds with delightful ease, his curiosity and humor always evident. But in Walking Tune - and many of the other pieces he's done over his long career - this skill is mixed with a sensibility that is elegiac."
Other premiere recordings include the invigorating Chu Lu Lu, a dense one-minute "commercial" commissioned by the American Center in Paris, and the playful Gold and Spirit, commissioned by the 1984 Olympics Arts Festival in Los Angeles. The latter piece realizes a cherished Amirkhanian ambition: to create cheers based on artists' names. Hence we hear such group cheers as "Go Van Gogh," "Ray Man Ray," and "Marcel - Duh Champ."
The CD also contains the slyly witty Vers Les Anges, a tribute to Nicolas Slonimsky, and the hauntingly somber Bajanoom, titled from the Armenian word for "separation."
Walking Tune is "One of the Year's 20 Best CDs," according to the Electronic Music Foundation.

Well-Crafted Neoclassic American Piano Music.......2004-02-22
The big piece here is the 21-minute Sonata (1975-1976) in three movements. It is reminiscent of Prokofiev in its earnest fervor leavened by wit. There are lyrical moments, for certain, but the main impression here is of granitic blocks of harmony amidst free polyphony. The finale contains a driving fugue that reminds one of the similar movement in Barber's Piano Sonata.
'A Suffolk Memory' is an eight-piece 22-minute suite that recaptures impressions gained during the appearance by the William Ferris Chorale at the Aldeburgh Festival at the invitation of Sir Peter Pears in 1986. Particularly effective are the misty 'The Sea, at Dusk,' the bustling 'High Street, Noon,' the serene 'Sunday Morning, from the Terrace' (which puts one in mind of the Sunday morning scene in 'Peter Grimes'), 'The Red House' (which borrows a motif from Grimes's 'In dreams I've built myself some kindlier home') and the celebratory 'The Maltings, Snape: Festival House Fanfares.' This suite is written in a rather more impressionistic vein than the Sonata.
'Epitaph, for an Artist' (1999) was written in memory of long-time DePaul University piano professor, Herman Shapiro, and was commissioned by this CD's pianist, Justin Kolb. Again, there are perhaps more impressionist and bitonal harmonies than in the Sonata, and there is also a heartfelt theme that recurs and which we are told borrows from Ferris's own 'Corridors of Light,' a setting of Stephen Spender's 'I think continually of those who were truly great' whose lines continue: 'Through corridors of light where the hours are suns / Endless and singing.' A touchingly lyrical tribute.
Following are two small pieces, 'Serenade, for a Morning Room' (1984) and 'Tune for Ten' (1987) which were occasional pieces written for friends; the latter was for John von Rhein, music critic of the Chicago Tribune, on the tenth anniversary of his tenure at the newspaper; the piece is 10 measures long and in 10/4 time.
Finally, there is the 9-minute 'Sonatina' (1962), the earliest piece here, written for Ferris's graduation from the American Conservatory of Music. It reminds one of that earlier graduation piece, Prokofiev's 'Classical Symphony.' Although poured into classical forms it is light-hearted in the French spirit of, say, Poulenc or Ravel, and is utterly charming. Of note is the long-lined melody of the slow second movement which recalls the middle movement of Ravel's G major concerto with its limpid polyphony. The finale is a swinging 6/8 whistling tune over a gently rocking bass line.
The performances and here are thoughtful, respectful, beautiful. This CD is a fitting tribute to pianist Kolb's friend, William Ferris. Of particular note are the excellent notes by Ferris's long-time partner and collaborator, John Vorrasi. The recorded sound is truthful and unobtrusive.
