Now thought of as a "doo wop" group because of the beat and the finger-snapping rhythms, the Platters, in the 1950s, set the scene for rock and roll, ushering in a new music which incorporated gospel and soul sounds never before part of the mainstream. The first all-black group to become universally popular, they influenced pop music for fifteen years and opened doors to the many black doo-wop groups which succeeded them into the 1960s.

Of the several "Best of the Platters" albums now available, this collection contains most of their biggest hits, including "Only You," their first #1 hit on the R and B chart, which then became #5 on the pop chart, when it crossed over; "The Great Pretender," their next hit, which was #1 on the pop charts; and "Magic Touch," "My Prayer" (another #1 pop hit), "Twilight Time," "I'm Sorry," and "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes."

It does not include several other memorable Platters songs, such as "On My Word of Honor," "You'll Never Know," "If I Didn't Care," or "To Each His Own." These songs, along with the previously mentioned favorites, are all available on one album if you search on Amazon for B000200Q2U, "The Very Best of the Platters."

The wonderful Tony Williams sets the pace as tenor soloist, with a voice ranging from a soft whisper to a soaring vibrato. The harmonies are mellow, the timing is superb, and the arrangements are terrific. The back-up voices are strong, and the album has been remastered to remove background "fuzz." Not generous.......2003-12-09

Only 11 songs in this CD, Polygram of USA is not generous to consumer. As one reviewer stated, there are rooms for more songs. I can easily named some of these, such as Remember When, You never never know, Enchanted and I'll never smile again etc. Here I like to recommend another Platters' CD titled "Universal Masters Collection [ORIGINAL RECORDING REMASTERED] [IMPORT]", which is the best sounding Platters CD I've heard (I've already owned 4 greatest hits CDs of The Platters). This is the only one you can find stereo versions (genuine stereo) of 'Smoke gets in your eyes', 'Twilight Time', 'I'll never smile again', 'Harbour Lights' and 'Red sails in the Sunset', plus 'I'm just a dacing partner','I give you my word', all 17 songs in one CD which is preferable to this 11 songs collection.

The Best of The Platters did'nt have the songs on it that the LP
had back in the fifties.But it has most of the ones that I like.
The cd is worth the price and the wait.

A "Best of the Platters" CD without "The Great Pretender"?!.......2005-03-08

Fans of the Platters will enjoy this collection, which includes four of the Platters' big hits and six of their lesser known hits, but as "the Very Best" of the Platters it is misnamed. Many of the songs that most of us immediately associate with this group are not included, so those fans hoping to rekindle memories of the early 1950s and 1960s may be disappointed. The CD does include four of the Platters' biggest hits-"You've Got the Magic Touch," "My Prayer," "You'll Never Know," and "Twilight Time."

The CD does NOT include the following major hits for this group: "Only You," their first #1 hit on the R and B chart, which crossed over and became #5 on the pop charts and "The Great Pretender," their next hit, which was #1 on the pop charts, and which may be the song most immediately associated with the Platters. Other major hits that are missing in this collection include "If I Didn't Care," "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes," and "On My Word of Honor," all major hits for the group.

These missing songs (along with the big "hits" that are included here) are available on some of the other "Very Best of the Platters" CDs. While serious fans may delight in finding some of the group's lesser hits to fill in their collections, the fan looking for one CD which has all the biggest hits, may want to look at some of the other choices in the "Very Best of the Platters" collections so that they can see which collections best bring back their own memories of that early rock-and-roll era. Heaven knows how many Platters best-of compilations have hit the racks through the years, though the sum no doubt falls far below the total number of singers who've performed under the Platters banner. (At one point there were something like 125 sanctioned versions of the vocal group playing parties and conventions.) That said, this 20-song collection does a fine job of covering the group's 1955 through 1967 prime. They're all here: "Only You," the quintet's biggest hit; "My Prayer," the ultimate get-to-third-base make-out tune; and the doo-wop cover of "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes." With tenor Tony Williams's soaring tenor accented by rich four-part harmonies, the Platters will forever represent '50s ballad singing at its purest and prettiest. --Steven Stolder

Eternally Smooth........2007-01-06

For me the Platters were the best of the 1950's. The fine lyrics & smooth music were delivered with a caressing chorus. "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes, My Prayer, Only You, Twilight Time, & The Magic Touch are among the five most beautiful & timeless songs ever produced in the English language. Fine sound quality, good photos, & liner notes. The only flaw is that I wish they had included a few more tunes. This type of music has stood the test of time.

Disappointed in this recording....A cassette of the Platters "greatest hits" that I have had for some time is much better in the quality and tonality of the music recorded...On this CD several of the original recordings did not include the opening bars to some of the numbers....

Platters at their best.......1999-12-14

If you could have only one Platters album this would be the one to have. True classic "ORIGINAL PLATTERS" the way they sounded back in the 50's only better-no skips or pops-as with the old vinyl LP's. You will enjoy this one.!

The Real, Original, Platters.......1999-04-25

This is the Platters original group that I have heard since I was 10 years old. This is the music you will hear from those oldies' radio broadcasts. I'm going to buy two more of the same ENCHANTED CDs. One for the car and one to give to my father as a gift to replace the old record we wore out long ago.
