Look, there's more to Percy Sledge than "When A Man Loves A Woman".......2006-07-10

...and this album more than proves it...just listen to the deep country soul of My Special Prayer, or the hurtful cry of a love lost in Sudden Stop, or the hip rocking soul of Baby, Help Me (written by Bobby Womack by the way). After listening to these and some of the other track on this album, you begin to forget about When A Man Loves a Woman...
Most audiences are so hung up on this number one tune, I think they're missing out on the most versatile sounds of a true country-soul legend...

DEEP SOUL, COUNTRY SOUL.......2003-04-30

This collection includes at least three of Percy Sledge's ageless classics, songs that reached the top 5 way back in the 1960s but have often been revived and used in movie soundtracks or advertisements. These are the eternal When A Man Loves A Woman, the mournful Take Time To Know Her and the gospely My Special Prayer. Sledge's sound is a unique marriage of deep soul and country, made even more distinctive by his pleading voice with its spiritual undertones. Other great tracks here include Warm And Tender Love, Dark End Of The Street, It Tears Me Up and You're All Around Me, all melodic and moving numbers demonstrating the prowess of the Muscle Shoals musicians. This Best Of album is a good introduction to Sledge, but people who are really into deep soul are advised to investigate further as Sledge was a prolific artist and there are many more, lesser known, but equally excellent tracks available on other albums. Together with a couple of legendary artists on the Stax/Volt label, Sledge was the best exponent of this gripping type of country-soul, and his voice gave him the edge!

This is an essential collection of deep soul songs by Percy Sledge. It's a shame that most people only know Mr. Sledge's most popular song "When A Man Loves A Woman" (and radio only plays that one selection from him) when there are numerous songs by him that are just as powerful. Underrated Southern Soul Ballads From A Master.......2000-03-02

It is hard to consider Percy Sledge underrated when he had his biggest hit go to #1 on the pop and R&B charts; had that hit featured in one of the 80s top films ("Platoon"); have its chart position (but not quality) matched in a Michael Bolton remake; and finally, be honored by its publisher (and, in a backwards way, by the IRS, to whom Sledge owed back taxes) as one of the most played songs of all time.

But "The Best of Percy Sledge" is more than the legendary "When A Man Loves A Woman." Using the Impressions' first hit, "For Your Precious Love," as a basis, Percy and his Muscle Shoals cohorts used simple ingredients (churchy organ, light drumming, bluesy guitar) to create heartfelt, dignified soul classics. Highlights include the mournful "Take Time To Know Her" (featuring Percy's spoken narrative), the Otis Redding-ish "Baby Help Me," two excellent versions of soul chestnuts "Dark End of The Street" and "Just Out of Reach," and the gospelish ballad "My Special Prayer." When Percy's voice comes in just behind the first organ notes to sing, "Let me wrap you in my warm and tender love," how could anyone not be moved? Highly recommended, but also check out "The Ultimate Collection" or "It Tears Me Up" for the original Atlantic hits.

Good Lord, what was I missing!.......2007-07-13

Yeah, I confess "When a Man Loves a Woman" is the only Percy Sledge song I'd ever heard until I got this CD. And I wouldn't even consider it as good as half the stuff on this CD. So much soul, such an amazing voice. How come you don't hear more of his songs these days!!!? If you like guys like Otis Redding and Solomon Burke, and "When a Man Loves a Woman" is the only Percy Sledge song you've heard too, GET THIS CD.

Take Time To Know Percy!!!.......2005-06-28

Percy Sledge's 2005 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame was overdue and richly deserved. "When A Man Loves A Woman" was one of the great songs from the 60's! (Mike Bolton's version was forced, mechanical and over the top!) Percy recorded many fine songs that never reached the same heights. I always thought "Take Time To Know Her" came a close second.

This is the album to buy which features 23 of his best recordings from 1966 to 1971. The 17 page booklet overviews his career with nice photos and text.

My favorite tracks include "Take Time To Know Her," "It Tears Me Up," "The Dark End Of The Street," "Put A Little Lovin' On Me," "Stop The World Tonight," "It's All Wrong But It's Alright," "Cover Me," "Rainbow Road," and of course "When A Man Loves A Woman."

Sledge sings with a soulful passion that tugs at your heart. I can't name too many singers around today that can match him. In fact, much of today's music is c-rap when you compare it to this Sweet Soul Music. That's why I like the so called "oldies." It's proven itself through the test of time!

Otis Redding was the definitive King of Soul Music. Percy Sledge certainly deserves to be the undisputed "Duke of Soul." Percy is the real Soul Survivor!

The golden age of soul.......2005-04-09

Although not one of the most prominent soul singers of the 1960s and 70s, Percy Sledge had a distinctive country soul style. He made a lovely, flowing type of R&B with his stirring voice and exceptionally melodious songs like the timeless When A Man Loves A Woman, Dark End Of The Street, Take Time To Know Her and Out Of Left Field.

This is authentic music from the heart, full of yearning and romanticism expressed in gripping imagery. The backing is similar to the sound of the great Stax artists, and his voice is often framed by lovely female vocals.

Highlights on this compilation include the aforementioned masterpieces plus Put A Little Lovin' On Me, the title track It Tears Me up, Warm And Tender Love, True Love Travels On A Gravel Road, Drown In My Own Tears and Cover Me.

When I first heard the opening bars of "When A Man Loves A Woman" the hairs on the back of my neck stood up and I got cold chills. This is simply the greatest love song in R&B/Soul ever. And when you put "Take Time to Know Her" together with it, even the feminists can listen happy. The years have not changed the great Percy and he is at his peak on this CD. Get it.

Using the Impressions' first hit, "For Your Precious Love," as a basis, Percy and his Muscle Shoals cohorts used simple ingredients (churchy organ, light drumming, bluesy guitar) to create heartfelt, dignified soul classics. Highlights include the mournful "Take Time To Know Her" (featuring Percy's spoken narrative), the Otis Redding-ish "Baby Help Me," two excellent versions of soul chestnuts "Dark End of The Street" and "Just Out of Reach," and the gospelish ballad "My Special Prayer." When Percy's voice comes in just behind the first organ notes to sing, "Let me wrap you in my warm and tender love," how could anyone not be moved? Highly recommended, but also check out "The Ultimate Collection" or "It Tears Me Up" for the original Atlantic hits.
