Although it squarely falls in the "jukebox musical" category, Jersey Boys doesn¹t try to integrate its songs in an artificial plotline. The show tells the story of the early-1960s group the Four Seasons, and the musical numbers tend to be introduced in context, as when songwriter Bob Gaudio comes up with a tune, or the quartet performs a show. This allows Jersey Boys to flow better than some of ill-fated peers, and the actors can shine without having to bend backward to accommodate an inane book. The show's most (only) daring move is to start with a hip-hop-tinged French-language version of "December 1963 (Oh, What a Night)," an actual hit in France in 2000. After that it's all VH1-biopic territory, but it's done with so much flair, taste and energy that the ride's a fun one. The Four Seasons had enough hits ("Sherry," "Big Girls Don't Cry," "Rag Doll," etc.) to easily fill an evening at the theater, so it's left to the cast to do right by them. And it does, particularly John Lloyd Young as the band¹s star lead, Frankie Valli. Young hits all the falsetto notes and brings real freshness to the part. His "Can¹t Take My Eyes Off You," a second-act peak, is signed, sealed and delivered with a star's acumen. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Album Description

Recounting the rich history and reliving the timeless sounds of the phenomenal Frankie Vallie & The 4 Seasons, the new Broadway musical Jersey Boys answers the musical-and philosophical question, "How did four would-be wise guys from Newark, NJ, become one of the greatest chart-topping successes in pop music history?" Jersey Boys celebrates legendary Rock and Roll Hall of Famers Frankie Valli, Bob Gaudio, Tommy DeVito, and Nick Massi who, as the 4 seasons, wrote their own songs, invented their own identity, and sold 175 million records worldwide-all before they were 30.

5 out of 5 stars Jersey Boys.......2007-07-30

This is one of the best CDs I have ever purchased. The cast of Jersey Boys gave an outstanding performance. They were just as good as the original Four Seasons. I relive many happy memories when I listen to this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Jersey Boys relived.......2007-07-28

This is a great way to re-live the musical. And even if you haven't seen it, it's a great way to be introduced to the songs of Franki Valli and the Four Seasons. Wow! It's amazing all of the songs you recognize that have been re-done over the years. But the originals are always the best. Check it out!

Fabulous! I loved that they included much of the dialog from the show and the music was impeccable.

3 out of 5 stars Jersey Boys (2005 Original Broadway Cast).......2007-07-19

Singers doesn't try to make the same sound the same original. The music sounds like the voices don't care about what they are doing. I was kinda disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Jersey Boys.......2007-07-08

Purchased CD prior to seeing the show when visiting USA in '06. A fun lively show - the CD now captivates those fond memories of not only the foot tapping music & show but also our special time in New York.

For an artist who only released four proper albums in a 15-year career, it's astounding to recall how many hits Whitney Houston was able to achieve. The two CDs on The Greatest Hits track Houston's rise from mid-'80s Top 40 balladeer to standard-setting diva. Disc 1, Cool Down, runs chronologically through Houston's down-tempo love songs, from "The Greatest Love of All" and "I Will Always Love You" to the cleverly conceived new duet with Deborah Cox, "Same Script, Different Cast." She's also showcased as the remixee of choice for DJs on the second disc, Throw Down, which serves as the antidote to the lovesick first disc. Calling in marquee mixmasters, Houston's old-shoe tunes get a new millennium polish. "My Love Is Your Love," reinterpreted by Jonathan Peters, captures the versatility of Houston's songs by making the downbeats danceable without going totally Euro-cheese. In contrast, Junior Vasquez's remix of 1985's "How Will I Know" pokes fun at the song's '80s fluffiness by layering in bells, lasers effects, and echoes on top of Whitney's enthusiastic vocals. --Heidi Sherman

5 out of 5 stars QUEEN WHITNEY.......2007-07-30

Even though Whitney has been in the news in recent years about her several downfalls, including drugs, and her biggest downfall to date, "Bobby Brown", you have to give credit where credit is due, the woman has a God given gift. The cd begins with her biggest hits, "SAVING ALL MY LOVE FOR YOU" to later jams "HEART BREAK HOTEL". Disc 2 is bascially "the remix" some better than others, and some you wish she would have just kept the same; "I'M YOUR BABY TONIGHT!". Overall, the cd is great, its a whole lot better than most of today's music. I have always admire Whitney. She will forever remain one of the best in my book.

5 out of 5 stars THE BEST OF THE BEST!.......2007-07-27

Need I say more! This is a collection of the greatest voice ever! Her phrasing, vibrato and POWERHOUSE vocals still go unmatched. This is the perfect collection for anyone who wants to own the best of the best!

4 out of 5 stars Whitney's Greatest Hits.......2007-06-02

You should buy this Greatest Hits set only if you don't mind Whitney's up-tempo tracks being disguised in new forms of remixes. I'm definitely not a fan of remixed versions so I never pop disc 2 into my stereo. Disc 1 on the other hand is a bulky collection of top 40 hits that actually saves this release. It's a shame Whitney doesn't put out songs like these anymore; I have a feeling this will be the only Greatest Hits that she'll release during her career. With her current state I'm not sure there will be need for another one. Maybe I'm wrong. Nonetheless, no one can deny the pure charm of classics such as "Saving All My Love For You", "I Will Always Love You", "I Hav Nothing" and my personal favorite, "The Greatest Love Of All". Whitney's voice soars through every note so effortlessly that you wish for more. I'm hearing she has a new album coming out sometime this year so let's hope for a sleeper hit, she will sure need one. Good luck Whitney.

3 out of 5 stars Its' ok.......2007-05-12

It's an OK set of songs. there are songs that are sang by someone else too, didnt like that. A lot of remixes, which i did not like.

5 out of 5 stars One of The Three Best.......2007-03-05

This Collection of Whitney's talent is well worth an addition to any music collection. There have only been three female vocalist in my lifetime (and I am 57) who have rated top in my opinion. Patsy Cline, Whitney Houston, and Celine Dion. Each of their own style, each with an amazing talent. I purchased this collection from Best Buy at a cheaper price than Amazon (sad) but I am extremely pleased with past purchases.

At the time of its release, this was the watershed for soundtracks, selling a kazillion copies. It documents Whitney Houston's character in the Kevin Costner movie, which required Houston to play only herself (although one hopes she wouldn't end up with someone as smarmy as Costner). The album is as much a testament to the production of Babyface who, through the mid-1990s, actually was the mainstream of contemporary hit music. Houston's singing is much better than her acting, and almost every song enjoyed a long tenure at the top of all the charts. Along with "I Will Always Love You" and five other Houston songs, the soundtrack also features Lisa Stansfield, Kenny G with Aaron Neville, and Joe Cocker with Sass Jordan. --Scott Wilson

4 out of 5 stars Only Good For The Whitney Songs!!.......2006-07-09

The only reason I purchased this soundtrack back in 1992 was because I was a big Whitney Houston fan. It is worth the purchasee for her tracks that are on here. This is the biggest selling soundtrack ever! It is certified 17 platinum in the US alone and spent 20 weeks at Number #1. It also gave Whitney her biggest hit ever!

I Will Always Love You #1 (14 weeks)...4 platinum
I'm Every Woman #4 Gold
I Have Nothing #4 Gold
Run To You #31

Other highlights on this album are Queen Of The Night and Jesus Loves Me. As for the other tracks, they are not so good. Oddly Run To You missed the Top 10. It is my favorite track on the album. Make sure you pick up a copy of this soundtrack. Even though it's just for the Whitney tracks,it will be worth the purchase.

5 out of 5 stars A Star Was Born.......2006-05-14

Whatever you may think of her today, Whitney's vocal ability on this CD is amazing and would be difficult to imitate by female singers on the radio today. For those who call it anything other than beautiful, where were you and your sordid opinions when the song "I Will Always Love You" first hit the airwaves? Originally recorded by Dolly Parton, Miss Houston's interpretation and impeccable performance of "I Will Always Love You" catapulted her into super stardom. Videos also turned her into an international icon of celebrated proportions as The Body Guard Soundtrack continued to climb the charts, set new records and earn numerous awards. In my opinion, Miss Houston need not prove herself any longer. For even without uttering another note, Whitney will go down in history as one of the greatest voices of all time.

5 out of 5 stars Total Crap, but it made Nick Lowe a millionaire.......2005-12-17

This album is a monstrous piece of watery cow poo. So why do I give it 5 stars? Because the royalties from it made Nick Lowe, the writer of What's So Funny 'bout Peace Love and Understanding, a millionaire. Granted, the cover of that song on this album is worse than Kevin Costner's acting, but who cares? The fact that Nick Lowe, who might be the wittiest songwriter of the past 25 years, got rich from this crap is a textbook example of irony. Now stop looking at the Bodyguard soundtrack, and go buy some whatever Nick Lowe albums are still in print.

5 out of 5 stars astonishing but still sad.......2005-12-16

this is cd is amazing i know whitney houston is on drugs now but back in her day she was on it.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely, positively wonderful.......2005-09-29

OMG, I love this CD. I love the movie which grossed over $400 million world wide. I still listen to this CD. I have the movie on dvd, the cd and the record. I love Whitney Houston Brown. I grew up listening to her. I was 13 when the Bodyguard hit the scene and I was taken with it. The tracks that Whitney laid were sick. The licks and turns and flows she put on I Will Always Love You were just classic. She ripped that song to shreds and didn't apologize for it. This album continued to define the majesty of the voice of Mrs. Whitney Houston Brown. The way she can make you feel the emotion when she sings is unmatched by any other in our time. Much love for Mrs. Whitney Houston Brown and for the Bodyguard. LOVED IT.

By this time in her career, Whitney Houston had a formula sound, and here she leans on it hard, surrounding herself with adult contemporary heavy-hitters like Diane Warren and Babyface. This wasn't the monster her previous records were, most notably The Bodyguard soundtrack, even though it seems to be an overt attempt at satisfying the same audience. Her voice is as crystalline as ever, but overall it seems a somewhat soulless effort, even though the themes are much more secular than she's braved before. --Scott Wilson

I believe that it is very hard to top a huge commerical success such as the Bodyguard. I bought this CD when it first came out and I liked it then and still now. Whitney is a true vocal talent. R&B, pop, and gospel are all genres that she can perform. You go girl!

I have listened to this soundtrack over and over again. I Love the Lord, Step by Step, I Go to the Rock, Hold on, Help is on the Way. These Songs are my favorites. Step by Step helped me through a very difficult time. I love Whitney Houston and the gift that she has been blessed with. I pray that she will bless the world with more gospel music in the future.

4 out of 5 stars introducing whitney houston.......2006-08-09

i've had this album for years and i'm listening to it now writing this review. i've never watched the movie but the preacher's wife soundtrack is brilliant. whitney takes on gospel and wins--by a mile. every track in the album is good, trhey still sound great over five years later. and the good news is it only goes up from that level. every song is soulful and showcase a mature, strong whitney who has a few collaborations with the georgia mass choir and a few other artists.

it's not as famous as the bodyguard soundtrack

look out for cissy houston on the album, you can hear the resemblance.

5 out of 5 stars Go Whitney!.......2006-05-14

I agree with another online reviewer who simply says "Let The Angel Sing" and I reiterate their opinion that "I Love The Lord", sung by Miss Houston will make the hair on your arms stand up! Whitney is absolutely amazing and she should be. On this particular performance, Whitney is not just a Diva, she is in her element! Her origins go back to the choir of her youth, under the direction of none other than her own mother, Cissy Houston, the awesome soprano from the "Sweet Inspirations" and former back up singer for Arehta Franklin, the "Queen" of Soul. Whitney's gospel performance is awesome and will be a classic for years to come.

When Whitney Houston arrived on the scene as a fresh-faced ing(nue in 1985, few could have predicted the level of superstardom she'd achieve or how fast she'd do it. Certainly the voice was there--supple, soulful, and when called upon, explosive. But the material on her debut album--and those that followed it, for that matter--was bland pop pap that mostly wasted her gift. Still there were numerous hits on Whitney Houston, including a trio of ballads: "You Give Good Love," "Saving All My Love for You," and the extraordinarily vapid "Greatest Love of All." The up-tempo "How Will I Know" was a mere trifle, perhaps, but it's one of her most winning performances. And that video. That dress. 'Nuff said. --Daniel Durchholz

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars WHITNEY AT HER BEST!!!.......2007-05-07

For me this is the Whitney's best album done; this was her debut album, and it's simply impressionant!! many of her best songs are here, beautiful ballads like YOU GIVE GOOD LOVE, GREATEST LOVE OF ALL, ALL AT ONCE and SAVING ALL MY LOVE FOR YOU; there are some happy tunes like HOW WILL I KNOW, TAKE GOOD CARE OF MY HEART (with Jermain Jackson) and SOMEONE FOR ME; I think all the songs are great and I wish this music will live forever.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic songs!!!.......2007-04-22

Despite many trifles and scandals that Whitney has experienced throughout most of the 2000s, it cannot be forgotten that at one point she was one of the most admired and successful singers ever, with perhaps one of the greatest singing voices ever recorded. This is a perfect album to become acquainted with her magical gift.

"You Give Good Love" is a very beautiful song. Her lush vocals and light backround singing make a very romantic song. A

"Thinking About You" is perhaps the most dated song on this album, and my least favorite. It's also not too catchy, but it's nice and upbeat. C+

"Someone for Me" is also a bit dated for a twenty-year-old recording. But it's pretty nice and Whitney's vocals save the song. B-

"Saving All My Love For You" was one of her first big hits, and it's easy to see why. A song that shows that Whitney knows when to embellish the notes and when to be more low key. Incredibly romantic. A

"Nobody Loves Me Like You Do" is a great duet with Jermaine Jackson. The two have good chemistry, and the chorus can give you goosebumps. It's a little hokey, but still really good. B+

"How Will I Know" is a fun song to listen to. Definitely not meant to take seriously. Certainly a bit cheesy, but it's incredibly catchy and uplifting. A-

"All at Once" is a pretty ballad. Very sweet and good vocals, though the lyrics are a bit trite and ordinary. A-

"Take Good Care of My Heart" is another duet with Jermaine Jackson. More uptempo than the first, and inferior in comparison. Not too catchy and poor background music make an already mediocre song worse. C

"Greatest Love of All" was her signature song for a while, and it's definitely catchy and beautiful. Some of the lyrics can be sappy and preachy, but otherwise the song is very uplifting and sends a good message. A-

"Hold Me" is a flawless track that is very sexy and beautiful. As a duet with Teddy Pendergrass, the two have fantastic chemistry, and the chorus will send shivers up your spine. A

If you are wondering what made Whitney Houston one of the most beloved singers of the 80s and 90s, this is a good place to be introduced. These songs show a young woman with a great maturity. With a new album hopefully coming out in the near future, Whitney may be able to show that this was not the only timeless album she had out of her.

5 out of 5 stars Whitney's first gem.......2007-03-04

This is Whitney's first mega-hit album release. There are multiple hits on this album and if you're into her soothing ballads, then this is definitely one you need to add to your collection. The album starts off with "You Give Good Love", which was her first release that set off the beginning of her career. The song is a nice blend of balladry and sweet lyrics, particularly for those into setting romantic dinner moods. "The Greatest Love Of All" is a song that even non-Whitney fans are familiar with, and the song has been used as theme songs for many charity organizations and TV shows for its sentimental lyrics and message. Teddy Pendergrass lends his classic voice for "Hold Me (In Your Arms)", which is another great ballad for setting the romantic mood. The album's fill of ballads doesn't stop there, "All At Once" being another nice ballad to set a smooth tone for the night. This is also an album that you can listen to without worrying about her horrific image of recent times, since all songs will likely take you back a couple of decades when she was considered one of the more clean-cut artists of her generation.

5 out of 5 stars A SLAMMING DEBUT FROM THE BEST VOICE OF ALL TIME.......2007-02-12

YES, I SAID IT. SHE IS THE BEST SINGER IN THE WORLD TODAY. I AM A DIE-HARD WHITNEY FAN AND HAS BEEN FOR OVER 20 YEARS NOW. THIS ALBUM IS A CLASSIC. I DON'T KNOW ANY DEBUT ALBUM THAT WAS BETTER THAN THIS ONE. WHITNEY HAS BEEN IN THE GAME A VERY LONG TIME SO ALL OF US SHOULD BE FAMILIAR WITH THE SONGS. SO ALL I CAN SAY IS GET THIS MASTERPIECE AND ADD IT TO YOUR COLLECTION. THIS ALBUM HAS 'HOW WILL I KNOW', SAVING ALL MY LOVE FOR YOU, THE GREATEST LOVE OF ALL, HOLD ME AND OTHERS. IT WOULD BE A SHAME NOT TO HAVE THIS GREAT WORK OF ART. HER VOICE IS AT ITS VERY BEST.

5 out of 5 stars Whitney Houston age 22 is Fantastic!.......2007-01-06

Whitney Houston's debut album from 1985 is nothing short of excellent. It's quite amazing looking back at a 22 year old quite unknown young woman at the time making such a fullpacked hit album. It's a great mix of Ballads, Dance-Pop and R&B and the production that include Narada Michael Walden and Jermaine Jackson (MJ's Brother) is very tight. 3 singles would reach the top of the billboard charts and 1 in the UK. While another single would become a top 3. This album became the most selling debut album from a female singer until Britney Spears arrived in 1999. With great singles & production, an amazing voice and also a pretty face it may not be that hard to see why this album was so popular, but Whitney still hadn't showed her full potential and would be even better on her next album. It doesn't hurt to get help from veterans such a Jermaine and Teddy Pendergrass that appear on 2 + 1 songs, although not any of the singles.

First single, "You Give Good Love" reached the third place on the charts. It is a ballad and give good proof about her vocal power. It became her breakthrough song even if "Someone for Me" was actually the first single. This song is R&B/Pop midtempo and is not bad but doesn't differ much from other contemporary music at the time. "Thinking About You" was actually released on single but never had a video, just for radio. It became a top 10 hit and is a typical 80's Pop/R&B song. "Saving All My Love For You" reached #1 on both sides of the atlantic and is a power ballad that will give you chills down your spine. What a voice!. "Nobody Love Me Like You Do" feautures Jermaine and is a ballad. Next big hit was "How Will I Know" and another #1 hit and a catchy dance-pop song. Funny stuff is that Janet Jackson rejected the song before it was gives to Whitney. Quite honestly it wouldn't be the same to hear Janet singing this "difficult" song with her so so voice. "All at Once" yet another decent ballad, but rather simular to others here. Next song is a midtempo duet with producer Jermaine Jackson, it's called "Take Good Care of My Heart". "Greatest Love of All" originally a hit for George Benson was the final #1 of this album and it's a fantastic song that Whitney takes to new height just like she later did with Dolly Parton's "I Will Always Love You". Last song is another decent ballad with Teddy Pendergrass, called "Hold Me".

Overall, Whitney's debut shows great promise and was a mega success with many big hits, just aswell as becoming a hit on the album charts and staying there for ages. The production and hit singles are strong, but the album isn't perfect. Some songs are quite forgettable, but as a concept it works fine. Back in 1985 when this came out, it was something fresh and new and many were touched by Whitney's voice and charisma. Still to this day, I think this album is great and my vote would be 4'5.

5 out of 5 stars CLASSIC WHITNEY.......2007-05-17

This cd shows why she was the top selling female vocalist of her generation. Every song is a super winner and her talent is celestial.

5 out of 5 stars This is "twenty" years old???.......2007-02-28

It seems just like yesterday that I got this on audio tape and listened to it constantly because, at 11 years old, I was amazed at the clarity and range of Whitney's voice.

After having bought Houston's sophomore album again (this time around on CD), I'm still amazed at her voice and the fact that, unlike the current sorry crop of so-called "singers" who are force-fed down the public's throats, she didn't need her voice dubbed over three, four, and five times. She could carry a tune ... and then some over these overrated folks today!

I can dig the complaints from hard-core Whitney Houston fans that this album reeks 80s cheese (then again, the 1980s, as a whole, were cheese). I can agree that it's very pop, but she did pick out tunes with soulful overtones here such as "Just the Lonely Talking Again." But if this is compared to her self-titled debut, "Whitney" isn't even a blip on the radar.

I was introduced to this album via MTV's playing of "So Emotional." From there, I got the tape and came to love the entirety of the album, appreciating Whitney's voice more with each song. From there, I went on to her debut and was knocked out even more.

But whether it's soul, R&B, or straight pop, Whitney's voice is powerful and she can draw you into whatever subject she's wailing about. I'll never forget the comparisons between Whitney and Mariah Carey when the latter first appeared on the pop music scene in 1990. Take Carey's ultra-high note out of the equation, and it's a great match-up between these two.

One thing that has been hurtful to watch over the years has been Whitney's decline in full view of the public. She spent many years on an obviously unproductive relationship (I have nothing against Bobby Brown, but facts are facts), thereby relegating herself to the limelight and even becoming somewhat of a laughingstock.

I hope she's on the right track again now and I really hope to see her make a comeback because seeing a talent like hers wasted goes way beyond being a shame. - Donna Di Giacomo

5 out of 5 stars More Whitney.......2007-01-06

Whitney Houston had massive success with her eponymous debut album in 1985 and not too surpring, this album 2 years later is very simular, Michael Narada Walden is also among the producers and with him came some of the greatest studio musicians. It got a fair share of dance-pop, R&B and Power Ballads just aswell as a few covers. Out of the 5 singles, 4 reached #1 on the Billboard charts. "Love Will Save The Day" 'only' reached #9. Whitney made everything she touched into gold at this time and there was really no contestant that came close with #1 singles either. Needless to say, If you liked her debut, you will not be dissapointed with this album either.

"I Wanna Dance With Somebody" was one of the biggest hits of 1987, it was written by the pair Merrill/Rubicam that also wrote "How Will I Know" from her last album and this is also uptempo, but one of her catchiest songs of all time that also feauture a memorable choreographic video. The production may sound a little dated by now but it's a wonderful song nonetheless. "Just the Lonely Talking Again" is a forgettable slow paced song, can't say much about it since it isn't anything special. "Love Will Save the Day" another great dance-pop song was the lowest charting single, but If I'm not mistaken there wasn't a video for the song which may explain that, since the song is good on it's own. "Didn't We Almost Have it All" a ballad also lacked a real video, but it reached the top of the charts just the same. A typical adult contemporary ballad that was good for radio and still is played alot. Another brilliant song in "So Emotional", This Steinberg/Kelly penned song is actually a edgy rock song where Whitney celebrates love. She also proved that there was nothing she couldn't do, even classic rock with heavy guitars was no problem. "Where You Are" is another ballad while "Love is a Contact Sport" is a 80's pop song that is pretty good. Next song is once again a ballad "You're Still My Man" but it's forgettable. "For The Love of You" a Isley Brothers cover and the last song "I Know Him So Well" a cover of ABBA. The last song to chart is another classic by now. When "Where Do Broken Hearts Go" was released it became the 7th consecutive Whitney single to reach number 1. A new record!

Overall, like I mentioned before this one is rather simlar to her last album but just as good. It had many memorable hits but also a few ballad fillers I could live without. However, it's one of her best albums and launched her career as a superstar. My final vote here is also 4'5 stars and this one is recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Great Follow Up To The Debut Album.......2006-07-09

The Whitney! album is a great set of material. Even though it does similar to the debut but still some great tracks. Whitney spawned 5 Top 10 hits from this album and 4 of them making it to number 1. The album sold 9 million in the US and has sold over 17 million worldwide. The album stayed at number #1 for 11 weeks

I Wanna Dance With Somebody #1 (2 weeks)
Didn't We Almost Have It All #1 (2 weeks)
So Emotional #1 (1 week)
Where Do Broken Hearts Go? #1 (2 weeks)
Love Will Save The Day #9

Other highlights to this album are Just Lopely Talking Again and Love Is A Contact Sport. This is a great album from Whitney Houston. This is before she married Bobby Brown haha. But this woman does have a fantastic voice and this album proves that. Make sure you pick up a copy of it!

5 out of 5 stars Whitney's Last Decent CD.......2007-06-02

It is hard to believe that it is approaching the 20-year mark since this CD was released. My, oh my, how time changes things. Back then, Whitney was at the top of her game: gorgeous face, incredible voice, and a life of endless luxury and happiness. But now, Whitney is a mere shell of her former self. Nearly 20 years in a stormy relationship, add to that her drug addiction and overall instability, and what we now have is just plain sad. I loved Whitney back in 1990, and I am so sad for her now. So sad for what should have been, but apparently was never meant to be. Hopefully, one day Whitney will come back to the real world, admit how she majorly screwed up with her life, and try to pick herself up again and move forward...reclaiming the glory that I am sure is still waiting for her.

I miss you, Whitney. We all do.

5 out of 5 stars Whitney's 3rd Arista album very excellent!!!.......2007-02-03

I'm Your Baby Tonight was Whitney Houston's 3rd album with Arista. It was released in 1990 and contains some great songs on it. Why is this title discontinued? What is the reason for it to not be available anymore? That is what's peculiar here. Whatever the reason as to why this title is not available anymore is anyone's guess. It doesn't make any sense to me as to why this title is discontinued. There are some songs on this title that I like. The title track, My Name is Not Susan, Anymore, Miracle, All the Man That I Need, After We Make Love, and I'm Knockin' are the song titles on this album that I like. The front cover picture of Whitney sitting on the seat of the motorcycle is a great one. To the folks at Arista: Please reissue this title back to fans of Whitney's so that they will have a chance to enjoy it again. Whitney fans: Until this album is reissued, you'll just have to bear with getting it used.

4 out of 5 stars Overlooked But Very Good.......2006-11-28

This album was released in 1990 and was Whitney's third album. It didn't quite match the expectations of her previous two, although five singles were released and were all top 20 and the album a third place on the album charts. Some would go as far as calling it a lackluster but I'm ready to disagree. It did eventually sell 4 million copies and a few of the songs here are very good. Compared to her first two, "I'm Your Baby Tonight" is miles after though. The producer list is impressive, L.A Reid and Babyface, Stevie Wonder, Narada Michael Walden wrote a whole lot of songs, Luther Vandross produced and appear on backround vocals also. Walter Affansieff on keyboards. He would later write loads of songs for Mariah Carey! and Kenny G on saxophone. What could go wrong?

At the time of this release Whitney just had massive success and had been mentioned in the same lines as Janet Jackson and Madonna. This album had something missing perhaps, there was no uptempo dance song like "I Wanna Dance With Somebody" from her last album and neither did it have the same variety as the latter. This follows the same path more or less with it's 11 songs. Many power ballads, some midtempo soul and then a few hip hopish pop songs but it still lacked the songs for a megastar Whitney had become. Although it's far from a bad album. Many of the songs, the singles in particular are very strong. Let's take a look.

Babyface/Reid wrote the first song, title track, midtempo "I'm Your Baby Tonight" a song about a woman that will do anything for her man. It reached #1 on the billboard charts in 1990. Perhaps the best song of this album. "My Name Is Not Susan" only reached #20 and was a chart dissapointing. It sound a little like Janet Jackson's songs at the same time. It's an uptempo where her boyfriend calls her Susan and mistake her for his ex. Perhaps more famous when Salt N Pepa sampled it for "What a Man". Kenny G helped her out on "All the Man That I Need" which also reahed #1 on the charts. This was a Sister Sledge cover, but Houston's version is top class. "Lover For Life" is forgettable even if Whitney's vocal range is always good. "Anymore" and "Miracle" were both Reid/Babyface songs, the first a midtempo the latter a ballad about abortion, although the video didn't prove that!. It reached a 9th position on the charts. Narada Michael Walden's "I Belong To You" didn't make the pop charts in US and not the top 40 in Uk either. However, this midtempo is pretty good, although it lacks a good hook it's a catchy song nonethless. "Who Do You Love" co-written by Luther is perhaps the closest you get to uptempo-pop here. Sounds a lot like Janet Jackson again. ""We Didn't Know" written by Stevie Wonder and also a duet. Interesting song, but never released as single. "After We Make Love" is adult contemporary, and forgettable. Closer is called "I'm Knockin" and is a jazzy Hip Hopish typical early 90's song. But nothing special either.

Overall, This is a grower. Few songs are that well known, but the album is defenitely not worse then anything else in 1990 even if it's weaker then her first two album. Not so strange since they both were phenomenal!. However, this album got it's moments, it's not perfect but it's defenitely worth the price. But don't start here, start with here first two albums "Whitney Houston" and "Whitney". 4 stars.

5 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE LAST INTIMATE VOCLIST! .......2006-11-14

MOST REVIEWERS HAVE COMMENTED ON HER VOCAL RANGE AND SO ON, BUT THIS CD HAS A VERY INTIMATE FEEL ON SOME OF THE CUTS. SHE REACHED THE POINT WHERE MANY SINGERS COULDNT OR DIDNT KNOW HOW TO GET THERE. I WAS BORN IN THE MID 60'S AND I HAVE SEEN LEGENDS AND I HAVE HEARD SINGERS COME AND GO. BUT WHITNEY HAD A TALENT IN WHICH WHEN SHE SINGS IT SOUNDS AS IF SHE IS SINGING TO SOMEONE FROM HER HEART. MANY OF THE NEW SINGERS ARE MORE OR LESS PREFORMERS AND DONT HAVE THAT INTIMATE TOUCH. LOVER FOR LIFE,ALL THE MAN I NEED AND AFTER WE MAKE LOVE ARE TIMELESS, WHAT I MEAN BY TIMELESS IS WHEN YOU HEAR THEM TODAY THEY STILL HOLD A LOT GROUND AND DONT SOUND FADISH LIKE THIS NEW STUFF,THIS IS WHAT I CALL GOOD SOLID MUSIC.THESE SONGS MAKE PASSIONATE MEN WISH THEY COULD BE LOVED LIKE THIS,AND IF THEY ARE IT IS EVEN EASIER TO IDENTIFY TO.AS I WAS GOING THROUGH MY COLLECTION TODAY THIS IS WHAT I PLAYED AND IT SOUNDED AS GOOD AS IT DID SIXTEEN YEARS AGO,IN SOME REGUARDS EVEN BETTER BECAUSE OF THE EXPERIENCES IN RELATIONSHIPS THAT I HAVE HAD IN THOSE SIXTEEN YEARS. I LOVE GOOD MUSIC AND I HAVE REFUSED TO BUY MOST OF THIS NEW HIPHOP GARBGE OUT NOW. MAYBE ONE DAY THESE KIDS WILL LOOK BACK AND SAY" THAT IS THE WAY IT SHOULD BE DONE"

5 out of 5 stars Timeless Diva's Ear Candy!!!!!!.......2006-08-02

This cd presents a hot and smoldering young Whitney Houston! With an excellent production and song writers that include Stevie Wonder, Baby Face, and Luther Vandross, Whitney proved from an early age that she musically has what it takes. Her sense of rhythm and timing has always been brilliant!

The opening title cut is a earth-shattering rocker! Whitney wailing "My Name Is Not Susan" makes for a powerful vocal. "All The Man That I Need" is deeply passionate, all the while contrasting tenderness with strength. "I Belong To You" is the ultimate soul song! "Who Do You Love?" is an electric dance number. Music legend Stevie Wonder joins Whitney for a funky duet in "We Didn't Know". Whitney's very fine vocal in "After We Make Love" is gorgeous and incomparable. Don't miss Whitney hitting searing gospel notes in the uptempo finale "I'm Knockin".

Whitney Houston is one of the grandest divas around the world. Whitney's passion brings out the brilliance in her music. With prayers and good wishes, hopefully that passion will become her strength in her personal life.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Singer.......2007-07-21

Surely Darlene Koldenhoven has one of the most beautiful female voices in the world. The song selections, the accompanying music and the quality of recording are supurb.

5 out of 5 stars Calming beauty.......2007-05-28

Infinite Voice is one of my favorite albums to pop into the player after a long and difficult day at work. Its soothing lightly classical pieces with Koldenhoven's angelic vocals do much to sooth an agitated spirit and sing peace to the soul. Wonderful Darlene! We need more like this.

4 out of 5 stars A beautiful voice.......2007-04-23

A classically trained vocalist with a Master's Degree in music from the Chicago Conservatory College, the golden voiced Darlene Koldenhoven has participated in a number of high profile pop culture products. In the 1980's she appeared on jazz composer Clare Fisher's Brazilian jazz vocal project, Freefall, which was awarded a Grammy in 1986 for Best Jazz Vocal Performance by a Group. In the 90's she appeared in and served as choir director for both Sister Act films, and in 1994 sung with Yanni Live at the Acropolis, a concert film reportedly seen by nearly 500 million people worldwide. She has also sung on recordings with Celine Dion, Barbra Streisand, Pink Floyd, Rod Stewart, David Byrne, and Ramsey Lewis, among others, and has authored a set of musical instruction books and CDs entitled Train Your Voice.

In the late 90's Koldenhoven began writing and producing her own solo recordings, including the adult contemporary Keys to the World, a gospel album called Free to Serve, and the Christmas album Heavenly Peace. This year she's back with an all new recording, entitled Infinite Voice, a collection of classically inspired compositions and new age arrangements of classics. Ms Koldenhoven's 5-ocatve voice is the only one featured on this recording, in some places layered to give a choral effect. Most of the instrumentation is synthetic, though several songs include acoustic instrumental performances from guitar, English Horn, oboe, flue, didgeridoo, and percussion.

Infinite Voice is a delicate and beautiful recording that will appeal to fans of light classical vocals from the voices of equally talented singers such as Filippa Giordano, Hayley Westerna, or Sissel.

5 out of 5 stars Gorgeous!!!!.......2007-01-09

One word... gorgeous! No really, i never heard such a voice singing The Star Spangled Banner!

4 out of 5 stars BEST- EVER VERSION OF ANTHEM.......2006-08-06

This interpretation surpasses all others I have heard..not merely because of Whitney Houston's passionate rendition..but also because of the brilliant orchestration by John Clayton Jnr and the Florida Orchestra. Recording quality was patchy, but excusable at this outdoor venue.
One quibble: the disc cover states that the anthem music was
'public domain' suggesting it was from some unidentified folk
source. Actuially (and ironically) it was composed by an
Englishman, John Stafford Smith....1750-1836 and was originally titled Anacreon In Heaven (Source: The Oxford Companion \to Music).

5 out of 5 stars no one can top this.......2005-09-04

No one ever sung this song like that and it is so good and is perfect.

i have always loved whitney from the first time i saw her on the merv griffth show back in 83'. from that prefomace, it was evident that Whitney was destined to be a mega star.this preformance of the star spangled banner is incomprable. i have never hered the anthem sound so powerful and meaningful. when she sings she truly captivates the listiner. i truly hope that now whitney has overcome her troubles and can once again reclaim her rightfull place in music history along side aretha frankin as one of the best singers ever.

Rumors of a greatest-hits package had been flying, but as millions of converts held their breath, Whitney Houston headed into the studio only to emerge--amid a flurry of drama screaming "diva" (a live Web broadcast of the international press conference revealing the album, and a veil of secrecy shrouding the new material)--with her first nonsoundtrack album in eight years. So is it worth all the hype and hoopla? Probably. There are no real surprises (typical ballads such as "You'll Never Stand Alone," obligatory writer-producer-singer cameos from Babyface, Wyclef Jean, Missy Elliott, Faith Evans, and Kelly Price--this time in a worthy attempt to slot into the late-'90s soul scene), but she does try to defend her marriage on the Elliott-produced "In My Business." Elliott's other effort, the slow-burning "Oh Yes" is a high point, but the hands-down driving force of this record is the multiplatinum, multi-octave power pairing of Houston with Mariah Carey on "When You Believe." --Rebecca Wallwork

3 out of 5 stars A pretty solid experience from Whitney........2007-06-25

It's no classic but it's good enough.

My favorites are:
It's Not Right But It's Okay
My Love Is Your Love
When You Believe feat. Mariah Carey
and Oh Yes

I like the beat to Oh Yes and have grown to like the song. Until You Come Back, written by Babyface himself is also notable. I Was Made To Love Him is good too. It's a very bouncy track. I don't care too much for You'll Never Stand Alone though.

3.8 stars. Good CD but I'm sure that one of her earlier releases is better. But if you enjoy R&B, then I fully recommend this CD.

4 out of 5 stars Enjoyable, But Not The Whitney We Once Knew!!!.......2006-07-18

I remember buying this cd back in 1998 and as soon as I finished listening to the whole album, I had to admit that I wasn't entirely pleased with this production. I was trying to figure out whether it was the new type of music or the way it was recorded or even worst, her voice. I realized that it was everything that I just mentioned. Although I loved Whitney since the very beginning and always will, this cd seemed to be the beginning of the worst for her. Whitney's voice on this cd sounds very strained and tired as if she had been singing non stop for days. There used to be such a milky, smooth sound to her voice and the way she could tell a story in a song just by the emotion in her sound but this album lacks much of that. The cd seemed very rushed too, from the sound to even the inside jacket, which is disappointing coming from such a high roller such as Whitney. She does try to put that same feeling into her songs like before but it only comes off as being very scratchy and even hoarsed at times. She certainly doesn't hit the high octaves like she used to and instead seems to be holding back from doing so, probably since her vocal cords couldn't handle it. I remember seeing her concert in Atlantic City just before this cd came out and she was terribly hoarsed and blamed it on doing many non-stop weeks of recording for the cd, but we all know that its more than just the recording thats causing the problem which I dont need to mention. The album has it highlights in a few songs like When You Believe, If I Told You That and You'll Never Stand Alone. Other songs like I Learned From The Best and especially I Bow Out, you can really tell she's pushing herself to get the notes out. I know she still has the potential for example when she sings Could I Have This Kiss Forever, it kinda took me back a little to the old Whitney. I really hope with her next album coming out soon in 2006 or 07, she really has it together and give us back that magic she once had in her voice.

5 out of 5 stars Great Album!.......2006-07-09

Whitney Houston does it again!!! This album is amazing and this album is way diffirent then her past albums. Not really any slow love songs but it's ok! This album oddly peaked at #13 on the charts but was certified 4x platinum in the US alone and sold over 13 million worldwide.

Heartbreak Hotel #2
It's Not Right But It's Ok #4
My Love Is Your Love #4
I Learned From The Best #28

My favorite track on the album is no other than Heartbreak Hotel. The song is just a great track and I remember when it was outplayed on the radio. Now I wish Whitney would come up with something like this. Make sure you pick up a copy of this album!

4 out of 5 stars A decade later and still going strong.......2006-06-14

Okay, so by now, Mrs. Brown's personal demons and public struggles are no secret. And at press time, she was still off her game so to speak though I'm sure loyal fans truly hope she's able to clean herself up and get back on track.

The only thing you need to know about this album is that Whitney sounds like Whitney (before drug use surely led to much weaker and more pitiful subsequent releases).

The "Whitney of Old" could go toe-to-toe and pretty much outsing any and all of the popular singers of her day: Ma Donna, Teena Marie, Janet Jackson, Anita Baker, Stephanie Mills, Mariah Carey, Toni Braxton, Mary J. Blige, Faith Evans, Brandy, Monica, Aaliyah, Kelly Price, Christina Aguilera, Celine Dion.

If you've heard or already own Whitney's classics like her self-titled debut ('85), Whitney (1987) and the smash-hit soundtracks to The Bodyguard ('92) and the Preacher's Wife (1996), then "My Love Is Your Love" is an album worth purchasing or at least giving a listen because of Whitney's awesome vocal abilities.

This is indeed another strong album she made before falling off vocally and as an entertainer.

Recommended purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Hot Collection From A Diva Who Knows How To Cook!!!.......2006-04-01

Whitney Houston is one of the greatest singers of our lifetime. She shines in a space all of her own. Her gorgeous voice is only a part of her talent. The emotion and heart-felt energy that she puts into each and every song is what ignites the excitement that generates her vocals.

This cd is an abrupt departure from Whitney's works from her early career. It was produced by Clive Davis and Whitney jointly. The opener "It's Not Right But It's O.K." is a scorcher! There is an inflammative element that is strong and defiant. Her voice is brilliant and vibrant! "Heartbreak Hotel" is a soulful, penetrating ballad. One of the funkiest "My Love Is Your Love" is one of the most creative songs that is also full of gospel notes. An extremely passionate song which made it to the spotlight for Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston is the very fine duet "When You Believe". Written by Babyface, this one flew up the charts when it was initially released. "If I Told You That" is a fully satisfying production number. The power that Whitney puts out in this vocal is shattering! Whitney sings a glorious, turbulent anthem written by Diane Warren, "I Learned From The Best". This song will take you up, take you down, and spin your mind around. "Oh Yes" is all raw feelings. Whitney sings an edgy vocal with a dark, heavy arrangement in "Get It Back". "Until You Come Back" is a riveting diva performance. The finale, a Stevie Wonder song, "I Was Made To Love Him" will take the top of your head off! This cd is full of love and pain and everything in between.

Whitney Houston is a singer that many critics like to put into a mold or a single category. As a genuine artist with much to give to her music, this is an impossibility. Her true fans know this and love her for it. Look to the stength of Whitney's voice, the vulnerability of her emotions, and the uniqueness with which she continues to produce.
