Amazon.com essential recording

One Love, a remastered retrospective of poli-spiritual musical icon Bob Marley's major-label work completed before his 1980 death from cancer, may well replace 1984's Legend as the best-selling reggae album of all time. One Love is 20 cuts to Legend's 16, a set that plays in chronological order of release as opposed to party mix. As with the latter, One Love presents the sweet organ-driven and feedback-scarred live version of "No Woman, No Cry" as well as album versions of classics like "I Shot the Sheriff," "Get Up, Stand Up," and "Jamming." Single versions of "Buffalo Soldier" and "Exodus" sidle up to the full-band cut of "Redemption Song" and the soulful Marley/Curtis Mayfield medley, "One Love/People Get Ready." A fine sampler of the Tuff Gong years from 1972's Catch a Fire and onward, One Love is aimed at the casual Marley fan rather than the hardcore completist, though its final track is indeed a rarity: the Marley-penned, Lee "Scratch" Perry-produced "I Know a Place." A moving ballad-styled anthem of solidarity and freedom, it was recorded in 1977 and is unavailable on any other Bob Marley & the Wailers album. One Love gives clear evidence of why Marley's legacy endears and endures nearly a generation after his passing. --Paige La Grone

4 out of 5 stars Good, But Left Out Important Songs........2006-06-24

Good, (well all Bob Marley is good) but I still have that feeling from what I got 5 years ago when it was released that they left out some very important songs, yes I am delighted that they have put "So Much Trouble In The World" on it as it is a flawless song, but reasons why they have left out "Satisfy My Soul" and the oringinal "Redemption Song", still leave me saying why.
I do like how they have put it in year order, and have included a song off each album, apart from Babylon By Bus, well they just had to put on "No Woman No Cry" of Live, so I will let them off.
"Roots Rock Reggae", is another great song deserving a place on this album, but maybe "War" or "Positive Vibration" to replace that, or to add on to it.
"Coming In From The Cold" deserves every right to be on Legend and this, it is just an amazing song and has had not enough credit for it.
Otherwise that, it is a strong album, and worth the money.
A good purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Forget "Legend" this is the Best Bob Marley Compilation that's Out There!.......2005-12-31

For many years, "Legend" was the only truly great compilation of this man's life's work but if you don't already have that album or if you are new to Bob Marley and want to find out what all the fuss is about, this hard-to-find version is really the best that there is. 20 great track selections and one track, the last one, that's not even on any other Marley album and most importantly of all, the sound quality is brilliant! Too many albums use the "remastered" claim too easily and sometimes even falsely to get you to "upgrade" from the album you already have but this is not one of them as this disc has been remastered to perfection. If you are not too wild about "live" performances just like me, then don't worry too much about the more expensive 2-disc version as this great one-disc version will more than suffice. Great track selections, great sound quality, great value for money, this is THE Bob Marley one-disc compilation album to get. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars An excellent, underrated Marley compilation.......2005-12-01

One Love. A Bob Marley hits compilation.

INTRODUCTION:
Bob Marley. Over the years, he has reigned supreme as the ultimate name in reggae music. Despite passing away in the early eighties, his music remains consistently popular. And it isn't hard to see why, as it really does stand the test of time. Despite dying young, Marley's career contained a plethora of music, and as such, many compilations of his work have been released over the years. The most popular compilation of Marley's work, though, would have to be the Legend compilation, released in the middle of the eighties. However, Marley has a number of other, lesser-known compilations. How does the lesser-known One Love measure up? Keep reading and find out!

OVERVIEW:
Bob Marley's One Love compilation was released in 2001. The compilation features twenty tracks, spanning many years of Marley's career.

REVIEW:
Bob Marley has a LOT of compilations, no questions asked. None of these compilations are bad, by any means. In fact, every one of them seems to succeed in areas that others don't. Legend is the best-known of all of Marley's compilations, and it isn't hard to see why. It was a single-disc, affordable compilation that hits all of the high points of Marley's career. However, just because Legend is the all-around best-known and most widely revered of all of Marley's collection does not mean it is the best one. One Love is an underrated gem of a hits compilation. For the most part, the tracklist is similar to Legend, but there are some changes. The set drops one track from Legend, Satisfy My Soul, and adds seven others. Also, this compilation uses the full-band version of Redemption Song, rather than the acoustic one that was featured on Legend. The order of the tracklist also got a total revamp. While Legend featured a non-chronological running order that was well suited for it being a "party" album of sorts, One Love uses a chronological order. I have always preferred chronological retrospectives in that they show you how the artist evolved over the years, and it works excellently for Bob Marley. Granted, some people may prefer the non-chronological running order of Legend, and it's not hard to see why they do, really.

OVERALL:
No matter which Bob Marley hits compilation you buy, you'll get a damn fine overview of his career. If you're just the casual Bob Marley fan who wants an affordable, single-disc overview of his career, you have come to the right place. Despite not being as well-known as Legend, this set is nothing less in the quality department. If you're a casual fan or just someone who is seeking an affordable yet effective introduction to the music of Marley, this is just what you need. Highly recommended!

EDITION NOTES:
Sadly, because this compilation is not as well-known as the classic Legend compilation, it is not as readily available. For that reason alone, you may want to go with the single-disc remastered version of Legend. Still, if you can find One Love, it is a worthwhile set.

1 out of 5 stars Is this a bootleg?.......2005-06-28

Okay, here is the major problem with this release: it is not a TuffGong/Island release. The Marley family has struggled with this reality for a long time. Because Bob's music has become so widespread and lacks the legal protections that American and European recording artists have enjoyed for decades, his recordings have gone onto the cheap market (flea markets, push carts, gas stations, etc-and now Amazon). Buying One Love only serves to strengthen these sleazy record companies and hurts reggae artists and the Jamaican economy. Look closely at the albums before you buy them. Find out what label has produced them and try to stick with TuffGong when possible.

4 out of 5 stars Stellar Early Wailers Album From Leslie Kong Sessions!.......2004-07-29

If you are anything more than a casual Marley fan, this album is definitely one to seek out. Despite its title this is not a compilation but in fact the very first Wailers project conceived and executed as an album in Jamaica way back in 1970. The titles all come from the same short-lived sessions for Leslie Kong who died shortly after finishing the record. If you like the raw sounds of the early reggae recordings by the Wailers (especially the Lee Perry produced Upsetter recordings) as much or more than the polished later studio efforts of Marley's solo career, this is a great album, worth having for Caution alone, a masterpiece by Marley, long underappreciated, and one of his greatest recordings. The groove they achieve on this track, led by a tingling lead guitar line, is extraordinary. Back Out and Do It Twice, both also written by Marley are also classics, especially Back Out with its laid back resentment. Peter Tosh's compositons are also excellent, expecially Stop the Train, and the only track that could possibly be called weak is a rather tepid version of the traditional Go Tell It on the Mountain. If this is the same version I own, released through Universal International in 2004, then the sound quality is quite good for such an old recording, though it varies from track to track. It is roughly comparable to the sound that the four tracks from this record that are on the Songs of Freedom boxed set have. The sound of the original recordings is actually quite different from the Perry sessions, having a less reverb-laden more Uptown feel typical of Kong. Seek out this album for a great listen to an early Reggae album (and it should be quite affordable too). Not quite as essential as the Perry recordings, but almost.

          Album Description

Bob Marley's role in the global success of Reggae music is nothing short of profound. His innovative fusion of the raw sounds of music borne of the Kingston ghetto with sophisticated western pop and soul stylings created a unique brand of Reggae that took the music world by storm. Such is the extent of his influence that today, some twenty years since his tragic passing, his music is as popular as ever.

Bob Marley and The Wailers started recording as early as 1963 in Jamaica. Following six years of local hits and having worked with a number of different producers, the group started a collaboration in 1969 with Lee "Scratch" Perry, which proved crucially important to their future development. Perry brought more focus to the trio`s rebel stance and also recruited the bass and drum team of the Barrett brother, who became an integral part of The Wailer's sound.

This exciting collection features Bob Marley's early seminal work from the late sixties, along with the best collaborations with the legendary Lee "Scratch" Perry. This collection illustrates the developing talents of a man who rose from the ghettos of Kingston to become the Third World's first international superstar, for the first time in surround sound.

This is an illegal bootleg release. Buy 'The Complete Bob Marley & the Wailers 1967-1972', parts 2 and 3 (from JAD Records) or Bob Marley & The Wailers albums from Trojan Records instead, if you want to have the songs on this album. JAD's and Trojan's releases are legal, and the sound quality is often much better on their albums. Also, if you buy the box sets from JAD, part of the money will go to the Bob Marley and Peter Tosh families and Bunny Wailer (the three original Wailers).

Parsed into three volumes labeled somewhat cryptically "Duppy Conqueror," "Soul Rebel," and "Mellow Mood," this collection of the best from reggae's avatar is not particularly well packaged, but for Marley fans it's a must-have. Among the assets are the sheer volume of tracks; inclusion of less well known Marley covers, like "Go Tell It on the Mountain" and Chuck Berry's "Memphis"; and the "Soul Rebel" volume's focus on his early Wailers era. But more creatively assembled Marley compilations also tell the story. While this effort is ambitious in track selection, it lacks liner notes. Shockingly, Marley's original trio mates--Bunny Wailer and Peter Tosh--are heard but uncredited. --Elena Oumano

I can not listen to the music on Amazon - called and told to use Mozilla or Firefox - still can't hear any music.
The software goes through the motions, have checked volume on EVERYTHING and still no sound comes out with Media Player or Real Player.

4 out of 5 stars Lot's of hard to find tracks, all available in one cd........2005-11-29

I don't know how people can put down this Marley cd. It's, by far, one of the best collections of The Wailers early music you can find. Sure, the sound quality could be better, but how are you going to pass up an acoustic version of Kaya. This version may be on other cd's but I haven't heard it. It's alot better than the original, bad sound quality or not. Other notable tracks, not mentioned above, are 400 Years, Soul Almighty, and Hammer. WOW! Maybe it is an ILLEGAL bootleg. I don't know. But what I do know is that the 4 songs I mentioned above are not on The Complete Bob Marley & the Wailers 1967-1972 Parts 1,2, or 3. I don't think Bob, Pete, or Bunny's families are suffering too much. So if you aren't super anal about sound quality and you can live with yourself after buying this alleged bootleg music, this is essential Marley music. A great way to blow your troubles away without blowing all your cash. Get This album.

          4 out of 5 stars I'm surprised.......2003-08-01

I must say that I am a little surprised by the low ratings everyone is giving this set. Yes the sound quality is poor, but that is part of the charm. One thing you need to realize is that these recordings were made during the 60's in third world Jamaica. Bob Marley was not yet a big star even in his own country, so he and the Wailers and the musicians (the Wailers at that time were his back up singers consisting of Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer, not his whole band)playing on the recordings did not go in with much of a buget. The recording eqipment being used was primitive even by the standards of the time. Like I said before this was done in the third world. Also, Chris Blackwell was not producing for the Wailers yet. I do think to call this box set "The best of" is kind of a minomer. That said, it is not fair to compare it to "Legend", since all of the tracks on that album were recorded at a much later stage in his career on a much higher buget with much better production. The best way to accept this set it is to appreciate it for what it is, and that is the transition from ska to rock steady to the reggae style we most know him for. These tracks were during his "Rock Steady" period and it is interesting to see how reggae was comeing in to being. Many of the songs have a strong Mowtown influence. A lot of the songs here are early versions of his later well known hits. If you are a true Bob Marley fan who is opend minded than this is a must have. I also recommend picking up anything from his ska years.

1 out of 5 stars I can't write a review unless I give it at least one star!.......2001-10-11

Otherwise I'd give it zero stars right before I bash it. I am not a huge Bob Marley fan. What I have heard of his I liked. So I figured I'd get this CD (CDs) and see if I should spend even more money on his stuff. Until reading these reviews I was convinced that Bob Marley didn't even sing on these CDs. I suppose that is because of the very poor sound quality. So...I think I'll order something else of his...because if it was recorded decently I think I'd actually like it...and get to hear it.
