For the second of 1997's dueling Buddhist epics (the other being Seven Days in Tibet, scored by John Williams), director Martin Scorsese made a wise--if commercially challenging--choice in tapping noted minimalist composer Philip Glass to score Kundun. Glass (who's previously scored the avant garde documentary Koyaanisqatsi trilogy, Mishima, and the strange Candyman horror series), is the perfect choice here; his own Buddhist beliefs play a key role in meshing image and music. Glass's familiar compositional techniques are wedded on Kundun to a sensitive use of ethnic instruments and the voices of the Gyuto Monks, adding an aura of spiritual power missing from most Hollywood fare. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous blending of music, film and subject.......2005-02-27

First, let me explain that I absolutely love the film Kundun.

I beleive it is a true work of art/ labor of love that didn't receive the recognition it so much deserves.

Let me skip to the big point-- the last 10 minutes of this film is a near perfect blend of music that is spot- on for the subject matter, which is enlightenment.

My guess is that a *very conscious* person had a lot to do with the creation, blending & timing of the music, script and film, especially for the last ten minutes-- OR that it was a total coincidence that it came out to be so near perfect. (either is very much in keeping with the movie's theme, which is NOT the Dalai Lama at all, but enlightenment)

Not for everyone, and I'm afraid I may have built it up in your mind too highly, so that you'll feel let down by the actual expereince of the music itself, I can say that *everytime* I listen to the last ten minutes especially (titled Escape to India), I cry for joy at *experiencing* a few minutes of the most sublime enlightenment, tears, sorrow & simple joy and wonder at being alive in this dance of life myself.

Thank you, Phillip Glass, Martin Scorcese and all those involved in this brilliant study of how a culture's focus on a single individual being assumed to be enlightened-- and his training to actually act the part, resulted in a person of great compassion, richness and insight.

In other words, their culture made him enlightened by treating him as enlightened.

What if we were all assumed to be enlightened and treated as such-- what difference would that make to you, at this very moment, dear reader, as you absorb these words? If that sentence has any impact on you at all, then you'll likely be *deeply moved* by both the movie and soundtrack.

5 out of 5 stars Hypnotic.......2001-12-01

I may be in the minority of the reviewers here, in that I have never seen the movie "Kundun". I picked up this cd because it looked interesting (I know...u can't judge a book, or cd in this case, by it's cover), but I am a great experimentor and I love 'discovering' different forms and types of music. And this looked intriguing and different. I thought it might be hard to get into, but not at all. From the opening track I was spellbound. I find the whole album to be very dark and mysterious...captivating, hypnotic and spellbinding. It is unlike any soundtrack that I own, and I love it. I've been playing it straight for the last 3 days, and the more I hear it the more I find to like. It's a wonderful cd to relax and meditate too. It is very soothing. Now I just have to see the movie too. :)

3 out of 5 stars Middling.......2000-05-23

You may like Glass, you may like his previous film music, but you may not like this. Just sharing the category I'm in!

Glass has done a lot of great work, and also a good deal of mediocre work, and this score is definitely in the latter. While it works well with the movie, listening to it on it's own is a disappointment. The difference between this and the great "Koyanisqaatsi" is important. The music for that movie was written with a core focus that permeates each piece, and althought the individuals sections are much longer than in "Kundun," interest never wanes. On this soundtrack, however, the trademark repetition never really catches hold, since there always seems to be a crucial musical element missing, as if there was nothing but accompaniment. While the tracks are briefer, they say very little, and there's no build up of musical drama. Of course, it's a soundtrack, and a good accompaniment to the other element of the movie, but as a stand alone recording it doesn't work.

4 out of 5 stars this Glass guy is really getting to me.......2000-04-21

I used to HATE Philip Glass. I thought, how can such a no-talent hack get work-- all he does is make the same music and recycle it! Then I saw Koyanasqatsi and Powaqqatsi. Powaqqatsi really impressed me, particularly because of the music. I saw the CD sitting in a record store one day, and bought it (the clerk even forgot to charge me for it!)

Not less than a week ago I wrote a five-star review of the excellent Powaqqatsi soundtrack, relaying how great I thought the music was while knock, knocking Philip Glass for his repetition. After that I began browsing through the other Glass listings, listening to the samples. Later, I saw the Kundun DVD at my video store, and decided to watch it again. The next day, I searched out the soundtrack. I have to take back the statement I made about never having to hear another Glass score. Granted, all of his music seems to be variations of a similar theme, but he can take that in many directions. Kundun has an entirely different feel than Powaqqatsi. It is meditative, while Powaqqatsi is like a celebration of life. I own two Glass albums now, and now it seems likely that I'll own three (the Glass/Shankar collaboration looks appealing). I wouldn't have been able to fathom that a year ago.

4 out of 5 stars Like Tibet:moving,haunting,enlightening..........1999-12-16

A film score like this comes around very rarely-Philip Glass''Kundun'is so powerful and inspired that one may wonder whether the music generated the brilliant movie or the other way around. However, I believe that this soundtrack is quite satisfying on its own;one does not really have to see the film in order to be moved by such a marvelous piece of work.

The all time NO. 1 selling record on CDBaby. This limited edition EP is the first available music from fast emerging, young British singer-songwriter Alexi Murdoch.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Simply Amazing.......2006-06-13

I bought this on a whim from another website, and it has become one of my favorite cds, despite its frustratingly short play time. Mr. Murdoch's full length album is out now, and I will be buying it no questions asked, simply based on these four songs. This album has a very simple sound; it is clean and has just the right amount of polish. Orange sky is the highlight of the album, but I never find myself skipping the preceding songs to reach it.

    4 out of 5 stars Simply Wonderful.......2006-06-08

I'm going to only give this EP 4 stars because there's only 4 songs on it, but what an incredible debut. I was in Tower Records yesterday and saw that he had just released his "debut album," my only two problems being "why did it take so long?" and "how come there are 11 songs on it, 3 of which are on his 4 song EP?" What makes this EP wonderful is the combination of beautiful melodies and wonderful lyrics. 'Orange Sky' is the song everyone either knows or has heard on the radion before, but the other three songs are just as strong. It's the kind of music you can listen to on its own, absorbing the lyrics and the music or the type of music you can read a book too. People have compared it to Nick Drake, which is a good comparison, but he may be closer to Badly Drawn Boy or a male version of Fisher. This guy is going to be huge if he puts out music on a more consistent basis. Buy this and enjoy.

    4 out of 5 stars I enjoyed it.......2006-04-27

This album has only four songs, but I think it is rather well done. The songs are simple, but very well-composed and heartfelt.

Orange Sky is by far the best song out of the four.

5 out of 5 stars An Amazing Debut EP.......2005-08-06

Alexi creates something special with his debut EP. He has a wonderful ability to create size with his music. If you are a fan of lyrically driven music that touches the soul you will love this EP.

By the way BEN HARPER RULES!!!

2 out of 5 stars One song wonder..........2005-05-30

Orange Sky is a good song, but the rest of the album is forgettable. Other reviewers have commented about the similarity to Nick Drake -- not so, say I. Murdoch's lyrics lack the craft of Drake, and some of the lines where he has forced the lyric into a rhyme made me cringe. Very disappointing.

    Album Description

Dark Matter is the new studio album from England's legendary IQ. With a career that spans nearly 25 years, IQ remains one of the biggest names in the world of Progressive Rock. Dark Matter marks a new beginning for IQ as this album will be their first US domestic release in nearly 20 years and it is their first for Inside Out Music America. As would be expected from the title, this is a dark, brooding album, bristling with attitude and aggression reminiscent of the band's early days but Dark Matter also contains moments of great melodic beauty. It is pure progressive rock in all its glory with soaring guitar melodies backed up with the classic sounds of Mellotrons, Moog and Hammond organ and offset by Peter Nicholls' ever impenetrable lyrics. The classic IQ line-up of Nicholls, Martin Orford, Mike Holmes, John Jowitt and Paul Cook remains very much intact and they are all in great form on Dark Matter.

5 out of 5 stars IQ - 25 Year Veterans Put Out Their All Time Best Album.......2007-05-31

IQ have been around now for more than 25 years, but the band just keeps getting better. "Dark Matter" ranks right up with the very best output of the band and continues their reign as one of the masters of the neo prog style. In fact after listening to this album again, I think it may very well be IQ's all time best. The first half of the album "Sacred Sound", "Red Dust Shadow", and "You Never Will" are all great. The band employs a slightly heavier sound on this one and as the title might suggest the lyrics are a bit darker than usual IQ fare. As good as the first three tracks are the real meat of the album can be found in the last two songs. "Born Brilliant" is a driving anathematic rocker. Clocking in at only 5 minutes it is short by progressive rock standards, but man does this song cook. I remember this song being performed at NEARfest 2005 (available on DVD) and the sound of the pounding beginning of this track over the massive festival sound system sent shivers up my spine. My home stereo is not quite the same level of intensity, but I can't help but crank this one up each time I pull it out. I also love the lyrics "You, like me, were raised to be a million times admired. Unlike mine, your family line, we're all born brilliant liars". Some of Peter Nichols best stuff. The final track "Harvest Of Souls" clocks in at close to 25 minutes. This may be the best individual musical work that IQ has ever done. I have to give the band credit in one area. "Dark Matter" is the first CD to be officially released in the U.S. in many years after signing to Inside Out America. For their first non-import album in such a long time it took guts to write a 25 minute epic basically about the world's perception of the United States. For me the lyrics really hit the mark, although some in this country may not agree with Nichols point of view. Musically the whole thing is brilliant as well, showing off all of IQ's strengths from soaring guitars, wall of sound keyboards and the invigorating rhythm section. I love this album and after a 25 year career think that IQ is currently at the top of their game.

5 out of 5 stars Two thums up for you IQ.......2007-03-19

Very very good cd, IQ wasn't one of my favorite band in the early days.
Since the album "Ever", fourteen years ago, they have done really great prog albums and "Dark Matter" is one of the best album of the band. From the beginning to the end, this cd is full of powerful music, great transitions, good feelings and melodic instrumentation as we, prog music fans, really like. Highly recommanded. A jewel in my cd collection.

5 out of 5 stars Best progressive record in many years!.......2006-07-22

Dark Matter is an album with progressive, symphonic rock with a new, fresh and dark approach mixed with the ingredients that characterizes the music of early Genesis and Yes. Beautiful harmonies, well played and harmonic guitar sounds reminding of the style of Yes' Steve Howe, a pumping melodic bass and well played drums. The keyboardist Martin Orford's playing reminds of Rick Wakeman's; in some bits I can hear resemblances from Close to the edge, in some others just the same type of playing; it's beautiful, harmonic and well played and its sounds fills the music with the sound the progressive music with a new and fresh approach. Peter Nicholl's singing is extremly good, the best I've heard from him so far; sounds like a young Peter Gabriel.

Dark Matter is a mix between the music that characterizes the early Genesis and Yes years mixed with the Promised Land era of Queensryche and the music played by Placebo. And even though I'm not a fan of the latest band mentioned I still find this music extremly good. The first four songs all have something original and fresh and differ from each other. The 25 minutes long Harvest Of Souls that has resemblances of Gates of Delirium with Yes and Supper's Ready with Genesis. It's a song with extremely beautiful music, with lovely harmonies mixed with the aggressiveness that Yes gave us with Gates Of Delirium and the spirituality of Awaken; the one you just should sit down with a cup of coffee and turn up the music and relax. It takes you on a journey through the wasting lives of war to the aftermath of this war and has give you a multidimensional lyrical approach that makes you think and interpret in the way that fits your own life. Highly recommended!

4 out of 5 stars An Old Dog Learns New Tricks.......2006-05-31

To start off.....I am the old dog referred to in the title. I have been a prog rock fan since the seminal work of King Crimson, ELP, Yes, Genesis (Gabriel/Hackett era), Camel and still consider them the Masters. My music purchases typically were CDs of these classics (to replace my vinyl, well-worn record albums) and I gobbled up the recent releases of these bands or various solo projects by the band members. I was stuck in a seventies time warp.

There were few outlets to hear new and exciting prog rock so it seemed to me that the genre was dead. I was really not finding too many new prog rock bands that tripped my trigger and all still paled in comparison to the Masters. There would be an occasional band that would show some promise, such as Marillion, but with repeated listening I would tire of them.

How wrong I was......I seemed to have missed a whole host of great prog rock bands during the 80s to the present. Just recently, I discovered and enjoyed bands such as Pallas, Pendragon, Arena, Porcupine Tree and others. I thought to myself.....how in the heck did I miss this great music? However the big find for me was IQ!

IQ really pays homage to the Masters, especially capturing the essence of Genesis when it was in the golden era of Gabriel and Hackett. Dark Matter was the first IQ album I purchased (it was recommended through Amazon and I checked some songs out on Progarchives.com which sounded wonderful to me so I made the purchase). Since then I have bought several other IQ CDs and enjoy them immensely as well.

Overall, Dark Matter is my favorite. It captures the spirit of classic progressive rock. I repeatedly find myself relistening to it and do not tire of it. One reviewer had stated that the keyboards sounded like they were purchased at a Tony Bank's yard sale and that really does ring true.....more than any other neoprog band, IQ's keyboards have the feel of the seventies keyboards....I love it.

Why, despite my rave about the CD do I only give it 4 stars? My problem is that I want more instrumental work and less vocals. The vocalist is great, however, there is too much of him. What made the Masters great was their virtuosity and the long instrumental breaks....the keyboard solo of Tony Bank's on "Cinema Show," Steve Hackett's etheral guitar solo on "Firth of Fifth," etc, etc. The musicianship of IQ is great but all too often they get to a musical break and it seems like they are going to stretch out into a long instrumental but then the vocalist begins to chirp in once again. I just wish they would let it all go for a while! It is a minor criticism, but if you are an old prog rocker like myself who cut their teeth on the Masters you know exactly what I am talking about.

Yes....an old seventies era prog rocker has learned some new tricks and I am sure glad I did. I highly recommend IQ and Dark Matter in particular. There are alot of oldtimers out there like me (and young prog rock fans who are wise beyond their years) who will truly enjoy this band and their music....I eagerly anticipate their next release.

5 out of 5 stars Bumping up the average and I don't care.......2006-05-28

I've listened to two other IQ albums, and this one just kicks those albums into oblivion as far as I'm concerned. "Sacred Sound" and "Harvest of Souls" are excellent epics, but it's the shorter songs that really make the punch. I have been singing "Red Dust Shadow" and "You Never Will" for the past year constantly. They're catchy, moody, and intensely emotional.

Peter Nicholls may come off at first as a Peter Gabriel-wannabe, and there's no doubt that the album follows a similar format to "Foxtrot" by Genesis. But over several listens, this album gains an identity of its own. Michael Holmes' subtle guitar work blends in nicely with the bombast of Martin Orford's keys. This album is a wonderful find and along with Porcupine Tree and the new Neal Morse-less Spock's Beard is one of the true champions of hook-worthy art rock.

    5 out of 5 stars Ecclectic Beauty.......2007-02-13

This is a masterpeice of Latin Jazz. Once you listen to the entire CD you are compelled to hit replay. The compositions are wonderful, surprising and rich. Themeatic materials from the great masters, from classical to contemporary, are interwoven in the melodies. Fine musicianship. Predominant trombome pieces make this one an ecclectic beauty.

5 out of 5 stars Passionate take on afro/cuban repertoire.......2003-06-19

Brass Roots is a hot little band playing cleverly arranged cuban classics and mambo tumes. The band is incredibly tight and much more versatile than the two trombone, trumpet, baritone, percussion line up might lead you to belive. My only criticism is that the tumes are too short and don't give the players great rooom to stretch out but it's a minor flaw in a musical concept that is executed so brilliantly. if you dig the clave, you'll dig Brass Roots.

5 out of 5 stars Cuba & Clave via Boston.......2003-06-13

A good friend of mine in Boston turned me on to this band . In a word, they're hot. The CD is an accurate depiction of their repetoire ( I heard them live in Cambridge). Fronted by ex-Sam Rivers, Either/Or Orchestra trombonist Russell Jewel, Brass Roots is both nimble and versatile. My only criticism of the cd is that they don't get to really stretch out on any of the cuts as they do in a live context. But the music is played with wit, passion, precision & brio ...

    4 out of 5 stars Outrageous Cherry - 'Out There In The Dark' (Del-Fi) 4 1/2 stars.......2006-05-16

Good 1999 release by Detroit's own pyschedelic popsters. About as good as the other two Outrageous Cherry CD's that I've made a part of my music collection, 'Book Of Spectral Projections' and 'Our Love Will Change The World' (see my reviews of both). With uptempo tracks like "Togetherness", "Corruptable" and "Tracy", this disc is hard to keep on the shelf that much. Was also sort of blown away by this CD's closer, the eleven minute head tripping "There's No Escape From The Infinite". Take it from me, IF you dig this particular genre, it rarely gets any better than this. A must-have.

    5 out of 5 stars Super Famous..........2005-03-09

is what this band should be, with money falling out of their pockets from selling so many albums..but since most Americans are lame they continue to fly under the radar. I have seen them live twice and both times it was great. This is by far my favorite album, most of the songs are just classic. I would say it is an almost perfect album. Buy this!

4 out of 5 stars Big hits, lots of misses.......2003-05-03

This album is a tough one to sum up, but here goes: a few of the tracks here (specifically "Corruptable" and "Georgie Don't You Know") are power pop at its finest, reflecting the head-nodding finger-snapping anthems of the 60s through a fuzz filter. Unfortunately, the band seems to have attention-deficit disorder and wanders all over the board from song to song. As a result, many of the tracks here are lackluster. Nevertheless, I feel the good outweighs the bad -- just be prepared to skip past some tunes that come off as uninspired filler.

    5 out of 5 stars Rock On.......2002-12-19

This album is one of my all time favs. And I'm not a psychadelic fan or obscure record collector or anything wacky like that. In fact, Matthew Smith, is one of my all time fav songwriters (plays with the Volebeats as well).

First, it doesn't get any better than Where Do I Go When You Dream. Though just about every track is good (with one or two exceptions like any other album). Yeah, you could describe it as a bit psychadelic, but the songwriting, lyrics, and hooks are so good you wouldn't even care anyway. Good singing and original guitar playing as well.

Now, the question is how do I get my hands on their older stuff?

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Garage Pop!.......1999-10-28

Outrageous Cherry's 4th album is perhaps their best and most focused to date. Their sound is kinda like a hybrid between the velvet underground and the monkees with a bit of sonic youth's distortion and experimentation thrown in. whilst they don't reach the heights of, say, "pale frail lovely one" from their debut self-titled album (1994), they have stumbled upon a new found cocnsistency which makes this their best overall work. anyway, stand-out tracks are "georgie don't you know" and "where do i go when you dream?". if your into garage-psych or just good old-fashioned guitar pop, you must check this out.

5 out of 5 stars Wow, this is a first album?!.......2006-09-10

I can't believe that this is not only a debut album, but one that seems to be under appreciated. Evergrey these days are playing a lot simpler in terms of style, (& still heavy!) but with this debut album I can see where their musical greatness started & continued to this day. This album encompasses not only the progressive sounds we all know the band for, but it has that raw sound that Evergrey is churning out these days; and it is MUCH HEAVIER compared to their later efforts. This is one of Evergrey's best albums next to 'Solitude-Dominance-Tragedy.' (I still have yet to hear 'In Search of Truth,' but that album sounds like it's killer too from the sound samples I've heard.)Regardless this album is blastworthy, especially when going for a nice drive at night!

4 out of 5 stars Fabulous for a first record!.......2005-08-30

If this is the first album you pick to listen to Evergrey, well you will fall inlove with it, but after you realise what great musicians they are having progressed better and better after every last album, you might say this is not the "greatest" record for them, but surely one that can be used as a first record or origin of a starting band.

    3 out of 5 stars Evergrey's First.......2005-04-27

This was actually the first album that Evergrey made, but due to problems with their original label, it was not released in the US until 2003. The songs haven't been remastered, which would have been nice since the production is so poor and raw. For those of you who like that, this might not be a problem. But with the production, it is nearly impossible to discern the riffs; the crunchy guitars sound exactly the same; just a pounding noise. The guitar solos are few and unremarkable. Even a guest solo by the fantastic Andy LaRocque is unmemorable, partially because there are backing vocals, which cover up the sound of the lead guitar. That being said, "December 26" and the title track are excellent cuts. If you are not bothered by poor production, or if you are a diehard fan of Evergrey, you should definitely pick this up.
P.S. The bonus video on my CD is inaccessible. I'm not sure if it is like this on all of the special editions or just mine.

5 out of 5 stars Pretty good for Evergrey's first release........2005-04-24

I've been a fan of Evergrey for a few years now, and I decided to back track and see what this band sounded like in the early days. "The Dark Discovery" is really good for the band's first release, showing just as much emotion if not more then their newest studio release, "The Inner Circle". Tom Englund is currenlty the only original member of his band, they've changed quite a lot over the years and have earned themselves's a reputation as a leading progressive metal band.

4 out of 5 stars THE DARK DISCOVERY - THE FORGOTTEN ALBUM.......2004-03-26

    EVERGREY IS FOR REAL!!!!

I know you probably love Dream Theater. Hell, I do too, and maybe you also love Symphony X and possibly Shadow Gallery. They're all great musicians making great music but what I want from you, my readers, is to open up that skeptical thing you call a mind and entertain the remote possibility that I might know what I'm talking about and that these guys are the musical equivalent of the second coming of C.....

Now, I think many of you out there are already familiar with 'Our Grey Boys' and you know what I'm talking about, so my job with you is easier. You've already got In Search of Truth which was, hands down, the BEST PROGRESSIVE METAL ALBUM OF 2001 and probably their followup Recreation Day and you might even have their very strong sophomore effort Solitude*Dominance*Tragedy, so You're all primed for another good Evergrey album. Trouble is The Dark Discovery is not good, it's SUPER DUPER. Yes folks Evergrey's debut album is fantastic. In fact I Like it almost, as much as In Search of Truth. Some songs I like even more.

    The Dark Discovery

Of course, even though, I had the benefit of having heard all of Evergrey's newer albums first and kind of knew what to expect, this was their debut, after all, and my expectations were subdued. However it only took about three or four tracks to know that this album was not inferior to the other albums. This is a fine album in the classic Evergrey style.

And just what is Evergrey's style? Afraid you were going to ask that. Evergrey sounds like, well Evergrey. In truth Evergrey has their own morose, passionate, emotional, mysterious style that is heavy metal mixed with classical, truly unlike any other bands.

    Tom Englund

You've probably noticed that founder Tom Englund is the glue that holds the band together. Well he's also the icing on the cake. Englund, whose voice is similar to but a little deeper than Rod Stewart, is the most emotional and passionate singer, along with Joe Cocker, I've ever heard. He gives life to the songs, he makes the songs soar. Although Evergrey's subject matter is dark, dreary and gloomy I don't really notice because the music is so glorious.

    Summation

I would like to give this album five stars but objectively there is a couple weak spots, which oddly did not bother me but might bother other listeners.

Firstly, there seems to be a common thread linking the delivery of too many of the songs. While individually the song may be wonderful, as a group their similarity is noticable. This was more acceptible when I thought The Dark Discovery was a concept album, wherein each new song fed off the previous but apparently they feed off each other without the benefit of a story.

Secondly, some of the middle songs were not up to five star quality and even the inimitible Englund vocals could'nt make them so.

BUY this CD. I've had it for several years now and it I still listen to it. I've just pulled it out and it sounds fresh as ever. I won't go into detail, you can read the other reviews for that, but I think this album will go down as one of the finest chill out/mood albums of our time.

    2 out of 5 stars Some interesting tonalities, but . . . .......2006-09-09

Every track but one has a simple, thumping percussion line, an artifact of modern music which I increasingly find tedious. No doubt it is easier to appeal to the brain stem rather than the prefrontal lobes. Unobjectionable as background music, but not actually worth listening to. Perhaps best described as music which one may hopefully, in time, grow out of.

5 out of 5 stars Stellar ! His best work..........2006-04-04

I think this album is timeless... the moods, melodies, harmony and textures are second to none. A great mixture of ambient to dance. Up there with the likes of Ulrich Schnauss and Manual. Contact Note is a good album, but Opalescent blows it away. A great buy.

Funny how after buying this album I realised much of it is played in Sex and the City, as well as a few other movies... Still great music none the less. :)

4 out of 5 stars Ambient music done right.......2005-09-16

Good collection of ambient tunes that you can enjoying listening to over and over.

5 out of 5 stars Best album I've ever heard.......2003-10-23

One of the tracks from Opalescent was included on a new age sampler CD attached to the front of Nature and Health magazine, which is where I first heard it. The more I listened to the track, the more I wanted the album, but trying to locate Opalescent in Australia was quite difficult. Luckily I managed to find it - finally! - and it has proved to be the best purchase I've ever made, music-wise. This guy is phenomenal, especially considering his age (21). My music collection includes a huge amount of Vangelis, Jarre, Tangerine Dream and most of the heavies of chillout, electronic and ambient music, but I think I wound up listening to tracks from Opalescent at least once or twice a day for literally months - more than anything I've ever owned. Hopkins' music is utterly mesmerizing. It creates an ambient atmosphere unlike anything I've ever heard before. Everything flows together. This will sound cliched, but if you only ever buy one chillout album, let this one be it. I cannot recommend it highly enough, it is one of those one-in-a-million perennially listenable albums that I'm sure I will never tire of.

    4 out of 5 stars A good collection.......2007-05-14

Unlike the huge names, collections by Allen are not many - plenty of his opera performances are recorded, but there are only a few collections. My voice teacher recommended I listen to him to understand better how to deliver power without weight, something we've been working on. Yes, it's all in English, but that's fine, and the quality of Allen's instrument comes through very well.

5 out of 5 stars A Musician of Great Dignity and Style.......2005-07-27

Sir Thomas Allen is one of the enduring baritones who has been able to move throughout the operatic repertoire and the recital stage with intelligence, informed characterization, and immaculate musicianship. To have a recording of some of the roles he has inhabited at this point in his career is a gift (this CD was recorded in 2003). To have the added challenge of retaining the stature of the roles while sung in English translations at the request of Chandos is a credit to his abilities and communicative powers.

English is a difficult language to make musical, though saying that abruptly is countered by the fact that some of the most beautiful operas in history are by Benjamin Britten, a composer who truly understood his native tongue and kept it as fluid as the soaring melodies he wrote, as Thomas Allen proves here in 'Billy in the Darbies' from Britten's 'Billy Budd'. It is the other major arias from Korngold to Wagner to Tchaikovsky to Rossini, Bizet, Mozart, Gounod, Verdi, Thomas, Strauss, and Lehar that Allen proves that English translations do not detract at all from the performances!

For those purists who prefer opera sung in the original language (and for those who don't even need supertitles in the opera house!), then this recording may provide a temporary barrier to respecting Allen's singing. But once caught up in the ease with which he moves from style to style and comedy to drama, it is hard not to relinquish old preferences and not be wholly impressed with the beauty of the voice and the warmth and dignity of this fine musician. Highly recommended. Grady Harp, July 05

5 out of 5 stars Passed the "Opera in English" test with flying colors........2005-07-04

For me, the test here was Figaro's Cavatina, from Rossini's Barber of Seville - sung in English, as is this entire compilation of 14 operatic favorites, sung by baritone Sir Thomas Allen. Could he pull it off? Could Chandos pull it off? The answer is an unequivocal, unqualified yes! The secret in singing classics in English, that were written and scored in another language, is in three things: pacing, vocal agility and appreciation for "fit", and what greater test for tongue and timing than Figaro? When you listen to this one song, you will understand why Chandos and its benefactor, Sir Peter Moores have such a passion for their Opera in English series. Sir Allen's voice is a matured unmistakably settled baritone voice that contains a lifetime's worth of understanding of the music and words he imparts through his magnificent delivery. For example, when he sings, Tchaikovsky's "You have my love and devotion" from The Queen of Spades, he delivers a smooth and deeply emotional rendition that lacks nothing in translation. Wagner's "Turning my gaze upon this proud assembly", from Tannhäuser is another example of how fine, full orchestration behind a seasoned voice that waxes eloquent with every phrase, can create a mood of relaxed familiarity with word and music, that may be lacking when sung in another tongue. Great Operatic Arias, serves up a smorgasbord of tunes that are familiar, made more so by the care and attention given to creating a place for the Opera in English series in every home library. The mood here is romantic, relaxed and with few exceptions consistent throughout. If you haven't heard Opera in English, this might be a good way to start, given the fact that the listener gets to sample how different composers might sound in other than German, Italian or French. You might be surprised to discover that when done with care, as is obviously the case here, the sound is about as good as it gets. As an added bonus, the booklet that comes with the CD is full of pictures, libretto in English, and biography that gives us a good insight into history of the singer and his identifying rolls.
