SMiLE, a legend in it's own lifetime. Probably the most famous unreleased album of all time. Here is the reworked and fully completed version by Brian Wilson. The original tapes by The Beach Boys, remain unreleased to this day.

A veritable treasure trove of music and lyrics, and an essential addition to any record/CD collection...

Utterly Unique and Worth The Price.......2007-07-28

This is an amazing combination of vocals and instruments that is perfect for your quiet time of day when you want to relax with random thoughts. Envision "Electric Light Orchestra instrumentals and atmosphere meets the imagery of late 60's Beatles lyrics, sung in Bee Gees harmony with a hint of Bohemian Rhapsody timing shifts", and you'll get the idea. The overall effect is quite surreal.

If you equate the Beach Boys with sing-along surf music, you might not find this to your liking. But if you are looking for something to which you can listen when you are all by yourself and need to reflect on your life or kick-start your creativity, then this is definitely the music for you.

Though I missed the hype over this release, I can see why people who heard the demos in the 60's called it revolutionary and lamented its delayed release. There certainly wasn't anything in the rock world that was remotely like it at that time, nor is there much now to touch it. The musical complexity is astounding. I can't imagine what the score of this looks like, but I'm pretty sure that Mozart came back as Brian Wilson. Yes, it really is THAT creative and original. Give it a shot.

What could have been is what isn't........2007-07-17

For those people trying to relive the glory that Pet Sounds represented, along with the musical genius of Brian Wilson--a genius that seemed not to have reached it's full potential--this is the album for you. Listen to it and wallow in the pits of your despair over what might have been and rejoice in the vague scraps of genius on Smile to fuel your nostalgia. But the truth of the matter is that this cd is lackluster. The liner notes describe the songs lyricist Van Dyke Parks as "visonary." Well what was the guy looking at? They're abstract for sure, but not brilliant. Some of the lyrics--such as the ones to Vega-tables--are outright stupid. Wilson's voice is also not what it was and the vocals on the album do not contain the clear, magnetic harmonies the Beach Boys were famous for. This album is drenched in what could have been. Looking at it beyond its historical context the album simply doesn't cut it.

To those of us that were around at the time,we heard all the rumors,all the hype,the anticipation that Smile was the genius follow-up to Pet Sounds. I seem to remember that Brian left the Smile project unfinished, because he had a serious mental meltdown, and has never been quite the same, since. Chopped up the master of what WAS done.We all thought that it was the masterpiece, that never quite was, and probably would never be. Well....nothing that Brian does today,never quite surprises me. After 30-odd years, he decides to complete Smile.I thought, " OK. Let's see". I wish that I could have joined all of those that think that this was worth the wait. I can't. Brian should have left this alone, and simply just let the legendary Smile project be, what it was---a memory that could have been, but wasn't.

You should have this album.......2007-07-06

I am a huge Brian Wilson fan. I love what he has done and respect him very much.
Putting aside all this folklore and history assocaited with the album, this record is just ok. I used to listen to it thinking it was so good. Having heard the old soundbites and seeing Brian in concert. I slowly stopped listening to it. Then I decided to pop it in recently and I was very surpised to find that I really didnt want to hear any of the songs. I find them very silly and goofy, they dont need a girl singing on the album, and the vocals arent great.

Disappointment.......2007-04-15

I was excited to see all the fun music so I got suckered into buying it. What a let down! It breaks my heart because it had so much potential. I wish I could find this collection of songs only well done by the original musicians or even a good cover band.

I know I am "bucking the trend" but I throw a LUAU party every summer and I use this CD as part of my music collection. Everyone really likes it - some ask me to make a copy of the music for them. The songs are very well done in my opinion (not horrible like some of the others said). The originals are better I am sure, but this is an awesome collection ON ONE CD (if you are not able to burn your own with orignial artists). I was really surprised to see the bad reviews. I think they got ticked because they were EXPECTING the real artists. Now I would have been upset if I had that impression going in, but I already KNEW... took a chance - again, people at my party love it - and for the most part people don't notice it's not the original artists. That's my 2-cents (to balance the scale).

I can still hear some hiss and tape imperfections on good vibrations. It did'nt matter to me Vibrations still sounded loud and clear and for the best part cleaned up from the original master tapes. I like the extra tracks alot. This cd is simple and sweet and sounds great despite old original tape defects. I dont believe there ever was a stereo recording for vibrations. I enjoyed this cleaned up mono version of good vibrations and besides if their was a genuine stereo original recording of vibrations from circa early to mid-1966 I think it would have surfaced by now. Besides I think mono recordings sounded better to Brian Wilson because I beleive he is deaf in one ear. Enjoy this cd ep it may one day go double or triple what it costs now. Produced for a then staggering $100,000 Good Vibrations was the exclamation point to Pet Sounds in the fall of 1966 as the Beach Boys really stuck it to the Beatles. Due to these Beach Boy releases in 1966 the Beatles would have their greatest year creativity wise in 1967 as they would answer there well armed rivals with Pennylane, Strawberry fields, and of course Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band. The Beatles created masterpieces from Revolver to their last magnum opus Abbey Road. My honest opinion (and this might offend Beatle and rock fans in general) 'Pet Sounds" and "Good Virations" were the blueprints to all Beatle recordings from 1966 through 1969. I respect the Beatles for their writing and musical creativity. I really feel that the Beatles were so amazed by "Pet Sounds" and "Good Vibrations" that with their releases from 1966- 1969 the Beatles really tried to capture the sound of "Pet Sounds" and "Good Vibrations". There is no argument from me, the Beatles did create masterpices from 66-69 but honestly, never matched the sound of "Pet Sounds" and Good Vibrations". If it were'nt for Brians over indulgences post Pet Sounds as the song goes God Only Knows what the Beach Boys could have accomplished for the rest of the psychedelic 1960s. Man I'll tell you there has been nothing before or after that sounds like "Good Vibrations". Brian Wilson is the man, the one man who made the Beatles and Sir George Martin realize that they to could be surpassed in talent, let alone by one man and that one man is BRIAN WILSON................

If you are a diehard Beach Boys fan, its very important to have this if only for the memento it is. If you enjoy listening to outakes and want to get a feel of the whole production I highly recommend this wonderful little package. Its the Boys and all the studio musicians giving their all to perhaps the most complex piece of music Brian Wilson ever wrote.

Quiet Composer.......2006-08-21

I should preface my comments by saying that, as a veteran songwriter with many years experience in recording studios, I am in all likelihood discerning recordings from a completely different viewpoint from veteran listeners and/or school-trained music critics. Anyone who has been blessed with the gift of musical composition will have nothing less than the highest praise for the innate genius of Brian Wilson. If you can't get past his deteriorating, aging vocal timbre, and recognize his astounding mastery of the soul of a song, his flawless chord to melody choice, his perfect musical phrasing, his ingenius segues between otherwise complex key changes to mention but a few, then my heart aches with pity for you. He had the perspicacity to fearlessly surround himself with some of the most gifted musicians I have heard in decades.
From the haunting dulcet phrases in Love & Mercy to the tinny home demo recording of Still I Dream Of It ( which, as a composer, is an inspirational high point of this album to me) this record is a masterpiece. The music of Brian Wilson is a major and significant contribution to the American Songbook.
Keep writing, Brian!!

A Work of Genius.......2005-05-10

This guy really means what he writes and sings. It all seems like its by him, for him. Very personal. Its a strange mixture of a sort of personal suffering and joy. You don't find this with too many other composers. This Whole World is joy - its got an enthusiasm for life that's very energetic and involving. Caroline, no is suffering. I also really like Love and Mercy. Its a sort of message to mankind on behalf of mankind. Still I dream of it is a bit too much for me .. too agonizing. But in their own way, every track is wonderful. He might be slightly unhinged - aren't we all? - but that actually doesn't make any difference to whether you appreciate his music or not. And his renditions have so much emotion in them. I honestly can't understand why this is not the all-time classic it deserves to be. Listen to it, but it, tell your friends.

Really much better than my first impression.......2005-03-15

My first review of this was one-star, but I'm thinking that was a bit unfair, and I'm rereviewing it here.

My primary complaint was with the production, its a bit underwhelming, but I've recently been listening to this in context of the previous few albums Brian had been involved with, and I suspect the production value was a response to "The Beach Boys" (1985) and "Brian Wilson" and their overdone production.

The production's somewhat stripped-back nature is really quite unsympathetic to Brian's voice-- his singing seems forced on more than couple tracks ("Let the Wind Blow", "Do It Again" and "Wonderful" in particular). The backing vocals are also a bit unsupportive-- if you're used to the sort of flowering Beach Boys style harmonies, these are a bit too dry, even on the later material where Brian moved in that direction.

On the other hand though, the two songs from Brian's first solo album ("Love and Mercy" and "Melt Away") sound really great in comparison to their previous releases without a wash of synthesizers. An several of the tracks are certainly more than listenable, "Meant For You", "This Whole World", "Caroline, No", and "'Til I Die" are all quite good. The demo of "Still I Dream of It" is gut wrenching, somehow it works, although I prefer the version released in the "Good Vibrations" boxed set.

Its a brief little record (less than 30 minutes), and now that its selling for 7 bucks, its a good value for the money (I originally paid full price for it), but I largely prefer the originals to these versions.

I usually pick this one in the afternoon~with the breeze and warmth sunshine! Brian Wilson sings so emotionally ~ I do so touched. He reproducted these classics and the talented is over the "young" Brian Wilson!!! the background singers were do great.too.
"Harmonies" is The Wilsons' business as public known. Please pick this one and open your photo albums.With the CD and each picture awake your memories , you will be touched how music and life growns you up!!!

Do it again.......2003-10-28

This is the soundtrack to a documentary about Brian Wilson. Brian rerecorded some of his favorite, mostly lesser known, songs for it. It's obvious that Brian's voice isn't what it used to be. His vocals are sung in a lower key than they originally were, so he doesn't have to hit those high notes. Still, despite the damage to his voice, he still sings his heart out. He still knows how to sing, despite his vocal limitations. I know some people hated this album, but I liked it.

Brian Wilson's solo debut finally arrived in 1988 to much fanfare and near unanimous critical hosannas. Unfortunately, its commercial impact was negligible, a disappointing outcome for both Wilson, who takes pride in his string of '60s hits, and his boosters, for the 11-song self-titled record represents the zenith of the pop genius's post-Beach Boys oeuvre. "Love and Mercy" heralds Wilson's return to form; lyrically gracious and musically grand, it's an opener quite nearly on a par with "Wouldn't It Be Nice." From there, Wilson and an assortment of coproducers (Russ Titelman, Jeff Lynne, Andy Paley, and Lenny Waronker) intermix brisk, playful rockers ("Night Time," "Little Children") with sumptuous pop concoctions (the a cappella "One for the Boys," "There's So Many"), wrapping things up with an ambitious suite, "Rio Grande." The reissue is generously fleshed out with interview segments, demos, and late-'80s rarities, including the delightful B-side "He Couldn't Get His Poor Old Body to Move." --Steven Stolder

Love and Mercy - From Brian and Metamorpho Tonight...........2007-07-23

Your Metamorpho fell asleep last night to the sound of the waves undulating against the shore. Needless to say, this vision of Cleopatra entered my dream state. "I hate to barge in", she cooed. "But, I have a favor to asp of you". She batted her eyes. "Oh? What is that Cleo?", I asked. "You have been in de-nile for some time now. Even in my now spirit form, I have walked like an Egyptian many times to the sound of Brian Wilson's music. Why don't you write a review on his music as a solo artist?" Her papyrus lips were moist. She had a beautiful pout. "O.K. Cleo, just for you. But please don't tell Caesar". "Done!", she said and then disappeared. I could have sworn she had a bikini on, but then, don't forget it was a dream. Anything is possible there.
Now to this album. Brian wrote this after a long hiatus. As to why or how he was away for so long- I can only conjecture. No matter. Some people could consider this Pet Sounds II. But, it really isn't that. It certainly is excellent in it's own right. I consider it an expansion of his creative ability. Also the freedom to create. Songs with glorious accoutrements of lush orchestration and a "wall of sound" feel to it. The thing about Brian was that he was always able to sort out the vocals. Vocals as instruments providing an integral part of the musical landscape. All of that is evident here.
We have no "Surf's Up" or "God Only Knows" in this album. But so what? He has certainly proven his musical worth by now and can do what he wants.
The amazing thing with this album that - despite all his former problems- the songs convey odes to relationships- good tidings to all ("Love and Mercy") and wonderfully positve embellishments. My favorite one is "Let It Shine" which, for me, was such an important song through a dark time in my life. Metamorpho have dark times? Hard to believe I know. But you can't get to the good without going through the bad. Brian knows this all too well. It is also a universal truth.
There are so many wonderous aspects to the tunes included here. He is such a talented composer and has turned into a superb dreamscape artist. Whether it be about rebirth "There's So Many" with it's excellent insertion of "the planets are spinning around". Or the awe and prairie moodness of the "Rio Grande" with it's indian drumbeat. And that's just one of the musical motifs he employs here.
Brian Wilson is a listening experience. Alot of the songs don't exactly meet the standard chord progression. It's like he is busy working out thematic threads that tie the song together. There can be many melodies within one compostion. This is just another example of how he has progressed and moved popular music into the next phase of classical music.
That being said - alot of the music reminds one of what the Beach Boys could have accomplished under this new direction. And you will hear the ambience of their vocals here. Joyful, lush and a treat to hear.
Now I must be going. Hope you get this an enjoy as much as I have. Now to meditate and contact Cleopatra. She left a gold anklet here. Maybe a ploy? Perhaps I should send Guido to give it back to her. Let him deal with Caesar!

Caught in the Pyramid Scheme---- your Metamorpho

Originally released in 1988, Brian Wilson's self-titled debut album is a wonder to behold. The ultra-dense arrangements and in-your-face production values are a blast and don't sound quite like anything else, and Brian's pop-rock sensibilities, not to mention his sheer musical genius, hadn't deteriorated one bit since the mid-'60s.

"Little Children", "Night Time", "Meet Me In My Dreams Tonight", and "Walkin' The Line (the latter co-written by the brilliant Nick Laird-Clowes of The Dream Academy) are upbeat, uplifting, insanely catchy pop-rock confections. Meanwhile, the wistful ballad "Melt Away" and the wordless-vocal showcase "One For The Boys", with huge, breaktaking harmony arrangements, are absolutely beautiful, as is the gently-pleading quasi-ballad "Baby Let Your Hair Grow Long". Other tuneful gems include the dynamic ballad "There's So Many"; and "Let It Shine", the latter of which was co-written by Jeff Lynne, and his Lynne adding his signature drum sound. For an engaging change of pace, the main album portion ends with the quirky, crafty multi-part suite "Rio Grande"--it's a bit gimmicky, but highly intriguing anyway.

This expanded edition includes a bunch of additional gems. "He Couldn't Get His Poor Old Body To Move" is a fun song credited to Brian and Lindsey Buckingham and was previously a non-album b-side. "Let's Go To Heaven In My Car" has irresisible, bouncy verses ('borrowed' from the never-released "Sweet Insanity" tune "Water Builds Up") and relatively hard-rocking choruses. "Too Much Sugar" is another one of Brian's odes to the virtues of eating healthy. "Being With The One You Love" and the demo of "Walkin' The Line" are also outstanding.

"Brian Wilson" was a great album to begin with. Adding in the great liner notes and bonus tracks just makes it all the more indispensible. A must-have.

(P.S. An interesting sidenote... Brian's longtime "guru" Eugene Landy had writing credits on many of the tracks on the original album release, all of which have curiously been removed for this reissue, along with all the songwriting credits given to Landy's associates.)

It Took 18 Years For This CD To Be Recognized??!!.......2006-05-04

I remember a day in 1988 when my sister had finished her session on piano. She's brilliant of course...And then, she said - "You gotta hear this - no one will get it now; but it's pure genius, incredible." It was this album, which we both purchased and wouldn't part with for anything - well, almost anything. One of the greatest CD collections that will always be pushing the envelope from a great man's music for a world in dire need of anything that illuminates and lifts us even an inch higher as a people than we are now.

Flawed gem........2005-03-15

This album is a bit of an enigma to me, the material stands up, really well, but there's definitely weaknesses throughout it as well.

Let's start with the good-- certainly, the songs are brilliant-- "Love and Mercy" and "Melt Away", both really great sentimental pieces (the latter in particular is a personal favorite), "There's So Many" and "Let It Shine" both feature great vocal arrangements, and "Rio Grande" is just magnficiant. And certainly many of the others ("Walkin' the Line", "Meet Me In My Dreams Tonight") are more than good enough.

But there are some flaws-- Brian's voice sounds odd to me, I can't place it, almost forced, and his falsetto is definitely limited, probably most obvious on "One For the Boys" and "There's So Many". Beyond this though, the biggest problem with the album is the '80s production, too many synthesizers, some of the songs would (and did in recent live performances) benefit from more acoutic arrangements.

Overall however, the album is rewarding, and you sort of get used to its odd sound.

The bonus tracks on the reissue are so-so, my favorite is actually the track titled "Brian on 'Love and Mercy'", which also features a snippet of a piano-and-vocal demo of the song. The b-sides are kind of blah, but the demos are all really interesting.

Utterly brilliant and engaging .......2004-10-22

If you like SMiLE or PET SOUNDS, you will love this album. Released in 1988, it sounds absolutely timeless and fresh. It could have been released in 1968 or 2008...the gorgeous harmonies, achingly lovely melodies, imaginative instrumentation, innovative arrangements, and the sparkling production are all here. For me, the apex is "Let it Shine," which was produced by Jeff Lynne (ELO, Traveling Wilburys, Tom Petty) and catches both artists at a peak...it's an honest-to-goodness "goosebump" song that takes the breath away. Truth be told, it's all good. "Love and Mercy" combines innocence with a strong, tough plea for peace...all set in a lush symphonic pop framework. The dazzling vocal arrangements on "Melt Away," "One for the Boys," "There's So Many," and the aforementioned "Let it Shine" rank with the very best of Wilson's incredible career. "Rio Grande" is a stunning epic piece that portends (or echoes) the best of SMiLE. The bonus tracks are interesting and the packaging is very nice. This is a must-have CD for any Beach Boys, Brian Wilson, or pure pop music afficianado.

Brian Wilson's second full-fledged solo release is a tour de force of his physical art as the former Beach Boy mastermind overdubs himself into a chorale of well-tempered voices. Unfortunately, Wilson's coproduction (with Joe Thomas) leaves these feathery constructions floating on a too-thin instrumental base that comes nowhere near the oomph of Pet Sounds or "California Girls" or even the beaty stepping of Wild Honey. Only a couple of songs, "She Says That She Needs Me" and a retooled "Let Him Run Wild," hint at the sort of darkness that's driven some of Wilson's best work. (A second vintage Boys tune, "Keep an Eye on Summer," is also included.) And it's a mystery why he felt the need to hire Jimmy Buffett to help him construct "South American," Wilson's own "Kokomo." --Rickey Wright

Beautiful harmonies with well written songs. Brian Wilson shines in this cd release of "IMAGINATION". From your "Imagination" to "Keep An Eye On Summer" to the sultry rythmic "Cry" to "Happy Days". This recording is a voyage of Brian Wilsons musical geniuses mind. Lyrics are included with this cd, and actually found myself singing along to each song. Every song is done with that Brian Wilson touch. Brian really focused on harmonies with "Imagination", at times listening to this cd it actually reminded me of "Pet sounds". The Back up harmonies reminded me of the "Pet Sounds" Beach Boys. Brians harmonies on "Imagination" are close to his early 1970s recordings and have not sounded this good since the early 1970s. A well thought out production from Brian Wilson HIGHLY RECOMMENDED LISTENING!!! A BRILLIANT HARMONIOUS PRODUCTION FROM BRIAN WILSON.......

Brian is back - and in top form!.......2006-07-05

Brian is back in top form with this his first album for some time. The songs are strong and well produced, particularly the Carl Wilson inspired "Lay Down Burden". With the assistance of Joe Thomas in song writing and co-production this album lifts Wilson to new heights vocally and spiritually. From the optimistic opening of "Your Imagination" to the final track "Happy Days", the whole album is like a breath of fresh air that all Wilson and Beach Boys fans will love. The harmonies are classic Beach Boys, and he even re-works two songs originally performed with his former band. The sublime ballad "Keep An Eye On Summer" and "Let Him Run Wild" both sound better here than on the original cuts. Those harmonies come to the fore again on the second track "She Says That She Needs Me", a very moving modern love song that sounds simply wonderful. Eleven well crafted pop songs sung to perfection, produced in that unique Brian Wilson way with harmonies to die for. Perhaps some Brian Wilson fans may disagree with me but I think it's an absolute stunner! Buy it.

I Love Brian Wilson's Music But This Album Sucks.......2005-09-08

That just about sums it up. I have to assume that most of the folks who raved about this will say equally enthusiastic things about anything Brian records. Maybe they pity him, and feel it would be unkind to criticize poor Brian when he's had such a rough time. Or maybe they've recently discovered that he's one of the geniuses of pop music, and want everyone to know it. Who knows. I hate to flame ol' Brian, but I can't in good conscience let other unsuspecting souls waste their money on this; there's so much great music in the world, and life's too short. (Oh, why does it suck? It's soulless, commercial, glossy, pointless, and unimaginative.) Oh, and for those of you who find any review critical of Brian's music "unhelpful," this album is wonderful.

Just About Perfect.......2005-08-18

I don't get the negative reviews. I am a long time Beatles fan, and a relatively recent Beach Boys/Brian Wilson convert, so maybe I don't have the extra baggage or expectations of the longtimers. This album hooked me from the get-go. Songwriting, musicianship, production, singing are outstanding. This is a quantum leap above some of the dippy Beach Boys stuff that the die-hard fans seem to love and adore. I'll take Imagination's polished production, crafted harmonies, and fully realized songwriting any day. Only exceeded in breadth of concept, sophistication and execution by Wilson's Smile. Paul McCartney could learn a thing or two from this guy.

Great record........2005-03-16

An album that I often feel is underrated by Beach Boys fans, who all seem to prefer Brian's first solo record to this one, "Imagination" is a unique record in Brian's catalog. For me, what is most interesting about it is the use of more modern sounds and production. The record itself has a breezy feel, rather than the synth driven "Brian Wilson" or the retro feel of "Gettin' In Over My Head", this one feels more like a modern record.

My guess is that Brian or producer Joe Thomas were guessing that Brian's audience had aged and would appreciate an "adult contemporary" sound. Remarkably, I think it works nicely with Brian's sound-- the vocal harmonies are all present and as lush as you would hope, but with an edge to the recording that separates it. Highlights for me include the brilliant "Your Imagination" and "She Says That She Needs Me", which open the record. Both feature great vocal arrangements, a great retread of "Keep An Eye on Summer' (though I'm not certain why), and the stunning "Lay Down Burden".

The album does have its share of weaker moments-- I'm not big on "South American" (cowritten with Jimmy Buffett). Its ok, but it starts drifting too far into the breezy, modern sound and away from Brian's sound, the remake of "Let Him Run Wild" is lacking (I suspect because Brian's range is limited), and a couple of the songs have that genuine filler feel to them to me, particularly in the middle of the record ("Dream Angel", "Cry", both of which are well loved by some, go figure). On the other hand, the album ends strong, the bizarre "Happy Days", almost evoking a "Smiley Smile" spirit. Overall, a really good album, great place to start looking at Brian's post-Beach Boys studio output.

Here is a view of the Golden State through rose-colored glasses that's as effervescent and intoxicating as pink champagne. Brian Wilson and Van Dyke Parks trade the roles they occupied nearly three decades ago when they collaborated on songs for the Beach Boys' great lost album, Smile. Orange Crate Art was conceived and overseen by Parks, who brought his old boss Wilson aboard chiefly to give voice to Parks's wistful song cycle. Given that much of the album is set in California, who better than favorite son Wilson to sing these songs? But while Wilson's voice initially evokes images of hot rods and surfboards, here he sings of locomotives and steamboats. Parks's California is a state of mind where time is ephemeral. We're brought to a bucolic yesteryear unmarred by violence and poverty. Orange Crate Art is set in "a world apart." A "hobo heart" is carefree rather than desperate. Time is something to be held back. "Everybody must come home" to a town that shuts down by 8 in the evening because "everybody's got things to do." When all is said and done, there's nothing left but doze off to Parks's pop symphonic arrangement of George Gershwin's "Lullaby." --Steven Stolder

A beautifully happy record..........2006-11-30

I bought this album right when it came out in 1995 after experiencing a rather disastrous 1994, in many ways. I couldn't get it out of my CD player for months. My kids, who were 5 & 2 at the time, memorized the lyrics and loved the album as much as I did. It just made me feel good. I emailed Van Dyke Parks several years later to express my bewilderment that the album wasn't held in higher regard and was surprised to get a personal response. He said that he too had used this music to get through hard times and said that just maybe that was the highest and best use of music after all. A simply wonderful album.

The Songs Remain The Same.......2005-09-14

Is this a reunion of sorts, from fragments of their late 60s achievements? For Van Dyke Parkes, the move is the most cohesive and satisfying since his earliest solo outings:'Song Cycle' through to 'Yankee Reaper'. Not being a Wilson watcher, I haven't a clue what Brian was up to in the interim, though his absorbing bio-pic,'Not Made For Times Like These', would suggest not a lot, musically. So affiocandos of these talents would welcome, even rejoice in this bouyant, healthy-sounding collection. There's no earth-shattering additions to their respective palettes. One might conclude that while there's a familiar choir-boy ring to these reflective, often, banal lyrics interests, those are the very grooves that won them popular respect. Highlights include the title track, opening the set,'Wings of a Dove','Sail Away'(with intents light years removed from fellow Californian, Randy Newman's song) and 'Movies Is Magic' which really sums up the album. It's all escapist stuff. The prettiest of melodies, sumptuous strings and keyboards. The topic remains Californian Dreaming and its Hollywood mouthpiece. Absolutely no dark precipices here. Surf's up, the sodas are sweet and the song remains the same.

Some music can encapsulate the stress and strain of being alive and thus provide a catalyst for tears. In this case the catalyst for tears is provided but the tears are tears of joy.

Van Dyke Parks provides the idiosyncratic, heartfelt, positive songs about a California long gone and Brian Wilson provides the sincere vocals. How Van Dyke actually got Brian to sing these melodic but harmonically complex songs is amazing in itself considering Brian's voice has been ravaged by time. That curiosity alone is worth the purchase of this masterpiece.

The CD booklet art is beautiful and perfectly paints the picture of these vibrantly orchestrated songs. Songs that were obviously written for the love of writing songs. I doubt Van Dyke Parks and his crew ever considered whether this CD would be a hit. Who cares? This is art. And it is realized in a most honest way here.

An Americana oddity well worth having in any CD collection.

An Overlooked Gem!.......2005-03-13

With all the recent praise heaped on Smile, Orange Crate Art still remains largely under-recognized and under-appreciated. Sure, Smile was supposed to be this grand Copelandesque landscape of America, from Plymouth Rock to The Grand Cooley Dam. But for my money Brian and Van Dyke Parks did it so much better with Orange Crate Art. Having written, what everyone unanimously agrees to be the most California of all anthems, Fun Fun Fun, I Get Around and California Girls, Brian turns his attention to a California not of Hot Rods and Surf, but of sun drenched valleys rich with citrus and vine. Here Wilson and Parks celebrate and pay homage to the likes of Jack London and John Steinbeck. And if all this were not enough, we're treated to My Hobo Heart, a latter day Van Dyke Parks / Michael Hazelwood masterpiece. There's also the lovely Palm Tree & Moon, a dreamy little ode to a moonlit beach, territory not unfamiliar to Brian. And Summer In Monteray is so unabashedly nostalgic it would even make Clint Eastwood Blush. If you haven't become familiar with this so very underated collection yet, you really can't call yourself a Brian Wilson / Van Dyke Parks fan until you give this one a fair shot. You might even find yourself humming Sail Away or Hold Back Time while in the shower. I know I did.

AN EXCEPTIONAL LIVE PERFORMANCE.....................2007-01-23

This cd set rocks, Brian with his Wondermints are exceptional. The Wondermints are a L.a. group of super musicians who have an interest and love for Brian Wilson and The Beach Boy sound. The Wondermints performance shows their love for Brians musical sound. Brians performance is incredible and his voice although older, sounds really nice. Brians head and performance are really into this Roxy show, I believe this due, to the smaller area this concert was performed in, not like a giant stadium or arena, were concert sound seems to get washed out. Listening to this two cd set, I was really surprised how good this concert sounded. The interview with Brian, the last track of cd two, was really nice. All the Pet Sounds instrumentals were performed as close to the Pet Sounds album as the Wondermints could possibly perform. The perfomances of the early Beach Boys music was a treat to listen to. Brian really wanted to relive his lost youth with this concert and of course pay tribute to his deceased brother Carl with the song dedication "Lay Down Burden". All and all this "Live At The Roxy" is a well worth listen, especially the import edition it has four extra songs including Brians interview. BRIAN YOU ARE THE MAN!!!!!!!!

Nice Live Album.......2005-12-02

Even though Brian Wilson's voice has changed a bit since the heydey of the Beach Boys in the sixties, he still delivers some nice versions of the old songs, and has an easy going manner with the audience.
I love the song "Love and Mercy", and I'm glad he included it in this concert!

Brilliant live set from a living genius........2005-03-16

Much to the surprise of everyone, Brian Wilson began touring in the late '90s, and his shows became everything the Beach Boys were not-- a celebration not of surf and cars and fun in the summer, but of genius, digging below the hits and unearthing many gems. Backed by a supportive and brilliant band, the music on these two CDs, taken from two nights at the Roxy in Los Angeles, is brilliant.

The credit largely goes to Brian's band, the core of which is the L.A. pop band the Wondermints-- a superb group of musicians, and former Beach Boys touring bandmember Jeffrey Foskett, who largely sings Brian's falsettos. Brian's vocal range has contracted a bit over the years, and the vocal arrangements are structured for him to sing all the leads. While his voice is weak and occasionally goes off key or misses notes, its still got enough of that magic to carry itself.

The set is amazing-- from the opener, bizarre 1965 single "The Little Girl I Once Knew", the energy level is high, the performance is filled with obscure gems such "This Whole World", "Kiss Me Baby", "Please Let Me Wonder" and "'Til I Die" (the latter is a powerful and moving rendition), hits ("California Girls", "I Get Around", "God Only Knows", "Good Vibrations"), a couple "Pet Sounds" instrumentals, and a pair of new songs.

Now mind you, Brian's sort of odd mannerisms, accentuated moreso during these early shows, are there, but they're easy enough to ignore, and really, the performance is top notch. This is very highly recommended for any Beach Boys fan.

An introduction to Brian Wilson.......2004-10-22

I am not a traditional Beach Boys fan at all. I won tickets to see Paul Simon in concert. Although I am a Paul Simon fan, my wife and I were surprised when we heard that Brian Wilson was the "back up" band. I thought to myself, we should check the Brian Wilson set out. He should have been the "headliner"...as much as I like Paul Simon, the concert highlight was Brian Wilson and his band. I immediately became a fan and bought this cd release. The cd has a nice mix of songs and the band and Brian Wilson put on a good show. He even makes a little fun of his own personal past "lying in bed just like Brian Wilson did"...

YOU THE MAN BRIAN....WELCOME BACK BRIAN....A NICE RECORDING...................2007-01-17

Beautiful recording by Brian Wilson. Some may consider it boring and slow, but I dont. Brian may still be getting his recording knack back and hopefully he will be doing more recordings to enhace his skills. Brians duets with Paul McCartney, Elton John, Carl Wilson,and Eric Clapton are simply splendid vocally. "Soul Searchin" with brother Carl Wilson is my favorite on this cd. "A Friend Like You" with McCartney is a nice classy duet both vocally and harmonically. "Rainbow Eyes" a nice Psychedelic trip back to Brians heyday of the 1960s."Saturday Morning In The City","You've Touched Me" and "Gettin In Over My Head" are all great songs, nicely written and hold up vocally despite Brians older voice. I like every track on this cd and I can't stop listening to it. I admitt Brian could still hold his own vocally. For those who consider this recording boring and slow, I look at it this way, hopefully Brian will make more recordings and excercise his amazing skills for even better music. Highly recommended listening for Brian Wilson fans, Beach Boy fans and music fans in general. WELCOME BACK BRIAN EVERYONE MISSED YOU!!!!!!!!!!!

It Grows On You.......2006-05-10

Listening to today's Brian Wilson is a surprising and uplifting experience. While the voice tremors a little, and sometime reaches for those notes, his musical sense is still exciting, warm and inventive. I find his work inspiring today becuase he actually survived the last 30 years, versus many of his peers who are now gone, tragically, taking their genius with them. This album has some great cuts on it, and while a first listen may leave you wondering, a second and third listen builds a comfort like a new shoe that just needs a little breaking in. This is a favorite CD of mine, and with some help from Eric Clapton, Paul McCartney, Elton John and even Carl Wilson, it is a happy keeper. I highly recommend it, and hope he'll release another soon. Brian has a great future, and I want to enjoy it.

Tepid at best........2006-03-19

I am a Brian Wilson Fan. Been a Beach Boys fan forever. I thought the "All Star Tribute to Brian Wilson" was out of this world - espesh the Billy Joel segment. This CD however is rather monotonous. It is difficult to listen to. I haven't listened to it all the way thru yet. Too boring. This CD is for Die Hard Brian Wilson Fans Only!!

great cd. fav songs Getting in Over My Head, and practically everything from Make a Wish onwards. The guest stars do a great job at what they do best ie E. John does his melodic rockpop cabaret piano thang; Clapton rocks and Wilson LETS him; McCartney brings his poppy se'f and doesnt overshadow Brian but complements him in the best sense of the word. A great sense of friendship is felt in each piece...

The album as awhole does so much by incorporating alot of the BB 40+ years of harmony and innovative instrumental compositions that Wilson has specialized since the latter half of the 60s. You have doowopish, rock, pop, jazz, countrywestern, carnivalesque influences all thrown together as only Wilson knows how...maybe even some beatlesque and latin jazz stuff there too...

...a terrific album that encomposses many infulences, yet Wilson makes it all so natural as only the greatest musicians can. Alot of american guitarists (as well as the beatles, led zep, even the who and the grateful dead, back in their prime...) do this kind of harmonious collage/combination of different musical styles to create something new and accessible...who says pop music cant have creative depth to it..

...for me this was a great experience and after over a year I still enjoy it alot...thats what made me write this while listening to it right now, for the 2nd time today :-)

This album is a great listen for all Brian Wilson fans. It just makes you proud of being a fan of his and must make him proud having songs on it collaborating with the likes of Elton John, Eric Clapton and Paul McCartney. And especially with his late brother, Carl. Gettin In Over My Head has all the ballads and pop songs that we love about Brian. A fantastic listen.
