About the Artist
Featured on over twenty-five different radio shows across the country for his novel, Rebellion of the Light, candidate for the prestigious 2005 Pulitzer Prize in Literature for his compilation, That We Might Live, Frederick de Leon (Archangel) gives in to his fiercest passion on his debut album, "Archangel". A record priming with sensuous, poetic lyrics delivered by a seductive voice, he displays his thirteen years experience as a songwriter and establishes himself as a vocalist to be reckoned with. A protege of gospel music from the late 70s, pop and R&B from the 80s and 90s, Archangel creates a sound faintly familiar yet lusciously fresh with dreamy ballads and up-tempo beats that make his music sould like something from the future but yet the not too distant past. The album "Archangel", to be released spring of 2005, is a work of art.

The album is a soulful expression of passionate lyrics delivered in a smooth, silky, seductive style. Say Yes is an upbeat house tune that is pop all the way. Then it drops down into a ballad with country guitar lingering in the distant background on the next track. The track after that keeps the same vibe but switches the delivery to a dreamy melody. Carribean influence is heavy on Girl O'Mine while the artist uses an authentic latin flavor on A Love Like Mine. But it doesn't stop there, the last track on the album has the instrumentation of a rock song but with a constant the same constant old school R&B touch that encompasses the entire album.

A perfect portal into the sound world of medieval Russia, this selection of liturgical material, drawn from a tradition harking back to the 11th century, includes unadorned monophonic chant as well as ceremonial pieces in polyphonic styles developed in the 16th and 17th centuries, the sonorities of the former occasionally creating enjoyably spooky, ringing overtones in the generous acoustic. The men of Deisus sing with an almost visceral depth of commitment and, as might be expected, the low basses are profoundly in a class of their own.

The best Russian choral CD of the season.......2002-02-09

This disk is a must for every lover of male Russian choirs! Don't get confused by the name of the choir (I assume it is based on Greek deisis `prayer') or the commercial design of the booklet: this is simply the very best of Russian choral chant that has been published this season. The fourteen singers of the choir perform ancient chants, that have partly been deciphered here for the first time, and so are absolutely unique. Because of the high quality of singing and the choice of repertoire, Deisus can be compared with leading choirs such as the famous Patriarchate Choir of Mr.Grindenko. The chants performed on this splendid disk, all in honour of the Virgin Mary, are either homophonic or polyphonic, in a pleasant alternation. They share the quality of monastic austerity that makes them absolutely captivating: the listener is transposed to another world, a world of quiet and piece. Warmly recommended!

Astonishing Recording!.......2002-02-05

Anyone who hasn't heard Russian chants performed by deep voices has a real delight ahead and a profound musical experience. This recording captivates from beginning to end. The voices of the Deisus Choir, singing heretofore unpublished chants, took this listener onto a soundscape he didn't know existed. The choir emerges like the breath of God and rolls on in a vibrant acoustic that's perfectly suited to the voices, which resonate as much in the solar plexus as in the ear. I've collected a good number of recordings of chants (including the best-selling disc of the Spanish monks that came out some years ago), but the present recording by the Deisus Choir is now at the top of my list.

Have Any of You Been To Space?.......2003-12-28

I'm sure the answer to that question is no. Not many people have had to pleasure of travelling in to space. I, however, am one of the view who has journeyed in to the unknown. It's true. No, I'm not an astronaut, and no I've never been in a space flight simulator. I simply listened to "Paralyzed Mind of the Archangel Void" on headphones. I felt as if I was on a spaceship going through a black hole going through a time travel machine. I was disappointed for the first 20 minutes, because it seemed as if the album was going to go on droning the same beat over and over again, but I was wrong. It built up to the most amazing climax and what is simply the greatest musical moment I have heard in history. If you get this album, don't give up towards the end of the extended track because it is mind-blowing!
I wanted to send myself to the insane asylum because I could not take this album's intenseness. If you can get your hands on it (which is difficult), do it and travel through space and go to an asylum in one 42 minute sitting.

40 minutes isn't long enough.......1999-06-15

A truly beautiful thing to own and my favorite album to paint to - dense, brassy, exciting and transfixing - it makes my heart pound. Its always a bummer when it winds slowly to a close - I wish it was twice as long. A must for any Mercury Rev fan, especially those who've wished songs like "Chasing A Bee" and "Everlasting Arm" could go in indefinitely.

A Great Unknown.......2005-08-01

What a fantastic album this is - every track is superb, and it's amazing that it is virtually unknown. The appearance of Frankie Valli, in fine voice, is an added bonus. Thoroughly recommended.

Owl wise beyond its years.......2004-08-13

One of pop's unsung heroines, Nathalie Archangel recorded a breathtaking (self-titled) debut album for CBS (including the singles "Mr. Perfect for Me" and "I Can't Reach You"), then got traded to MCA, where her second platter, "Owl," was mistakenly buried instead of promoted. Perhaps because the single (the stunning, eloquent "So Quiet, So Still") was featured in a stinker of a movie ("Switch," with Ellen Barkin), the powers that be mistook the record for poop. On the contrary, it's half past brilliant, pairing the artist's catchy, galvanizing melodies and sharp, literate lyrics with crackerjack production by (among others) Don Was and Howard Jones (who duets on "It Don't Heal Clean"). In a set stuffed with shoulda-been smashes (the romantic "To Last Me a Lifetime," the sexy "But... I Want You Tonight," the enticing "Married Man"), "My Older Lover" (a duet with Frankie Valli) is the greatest hit you've probably never heard.

Good Variety.......2005-12-19

The Shrine Choir sings very nicely for the most part on this recording. The variety of Marian texts and settings are interspersed with some organ improvisations. The are some really exquisite moments, such as "Virgin Great and Glorious" and Britten's "Hymn to the Virgin." The Reichwein "Ave Maris Stella" is the most tonally ambiguous work on the recording, and contributes an avant-garde element.

But perhaps in late-night recording sessions, some really poor vocalism has slipped inder the radar, notably in the Palistrina "Ave Maria."

Overall, the Shrine Choir has chosen the repertoire they do best and expoited it to full potential on this album. Certainly worth your fifteen bucks.

Disappointing presentation of great music.......2002-08-04

I recently received this as a present but I was already familiar with many of these recordings, having owned the complete versions of the works presented. Yes, these are great recordings but if you settle for this compilation you will be missing out big time on great music. I own Fennell's recording on the Holst suite--while the March from the suite is very good, you will miss out on the beautiful 'Song Without Words' and the 'Fantasia on the Dargason,' which are the seond and fourth movements of the suite, respectively. If you get the original CD from which this movement was taken you will be able to enjoy the wonderful playing of members of the Cleveland Orchsestra as they play Holst's First suite and a wonderful rendition of Handel's Fireworks Music.

Maazel's Pictures at an Exhibition is excellnt, precise with excellent blends and fantastic orchestral playing, but you can hardly feel the power of the Great Gate of Kiev without the promenades and pictures that preceed it--you loose the whole sense of climax and fulfillment following the half hour of difficult music that preceeds the Great Gate. Beethoven's Emperor concerto is top-notch music but I think you might rather hear the second movement between the first and third movements which are full of powerful orchestral playing and keyboard virtuosity. Robert Spano's recording of Scheherazade that was released just a few months ago is brilliant. It's his first recording with the Atlanta Symphony and it's great--and you should own the complete thing which comes on a CD with the beuatiful Russian Easter Overture.

Spend some time looking for these complete recordings and you will be rewarded. What makes the compilation even worse is that in many cases the CD does not even present a full movement but just a part of a movement.

As I said, I own many of these individual recordings and they are all great: Telarc captures the best musicians at their best. Having two or three CDs from which these excerpts were taken is much better than owning this compilation. I highly recommend Fennell's Holst (Telarc - #80038), Maazel's Pictures (Telarc - #80042), and Spano's Scheherazade (Telarc - #80568), instead of this disc. Rachmaninoff's Second Sonata and Sibelius' Second Symphony are great but these are not my preferred recordings (find Van Cliburn's Rachmaninoff and Maazel's Sibelius), and you can do better by swapping some other performers as well.

I already liked "Brazilian Love Affair" on the CD by George Duke. Normally, I am let down by Remix CD's, but in this case, I was pleasantly surprised - it's very good! The product (in this case the CD contains 6 mixes) is a good value - and a great sound. If you can get it at a good price, then do so. I rate this disc Five Stars!
