5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Hello.......2007-02-20

I absolutely adore this CD. Amanda Marshall has the kind of voice that suits just about any musical genre. She has the throaty impact of a jazz singer, the great melodious sound of a rocker, and the delicate huskiness of a diva. Her songs are rich with feeling - "Beautiful Goodbye", "Fall From Grace", "Dark Horse" and "Let It Rain" have etched themselves permanently in my mind - so much so that I bought her Collections compliation. All moods seem to be captured - love, joy, longing, regret, sorrow, strength, determination, reverie. A great addition to any vocal music collection.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Debut (Rock) Album.......2006-12-19

In the mid-Nineties Amanda Marshall opened for John Mellencamp at a show on the U of Minnesota-Saint Paul campus, where I first heard her voice. She was captivating. For each song she sang, she radiated great energy. I purchased the debut CD at the show; it has been one of my favorites. All the tracks are great; my favorites are 'Let It Rain', 'Fall From Grace', 'Dark Horse', and 'Beautiful Goodbye'. For rock music fans that like good lyrics, great music, and a powerful female lead voice, I highly recommend this CD.

3 out of 5 stars SLICK CHICK TUNES... .......2006-08-22

... with the obvious standout being "Sittin' On Top Of The World", an instant soft rock classic with a great toe-tappin' groove to it. The rest is ballad-heavy chick music. Add an extra half-star for being a fellow Canadian.

5 out of 5 stars Insightful and heartfelt lyrics--she has a great voice and instrumentation too.......2006-06-05

Heard a snippet of "Birmingham" years ago and it ticked at the back of my mind. Then, I saw the CD and thought--what the hey. I wish I had found the CD earlier. Love Marshall's work. Very strongly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome CD!.......2006-05-03

I purchased this CD based on a recommendation - having never heard of Amanda Marshall before - and I have to say that I absolutely love it!!!

"Amanda Marshall" is a great combination of folk & rock - and with each song telling a "story", it would be difficult not to find at least one that resonates with how you're feeling at the time.

Another great thing about this CD is that the lyrics are included in written form - so you don't have to wonder if you're hearing/singing it right - a great plus in my book.

I would highly recommend this CD to anyone who enjoys folk/rock music - I think it would be hard not to like it! I'd also like to recommend another artist who's pretty similar in style - Jane Arden. So, if you like this CD, give Jane Arden a try as well - who knows, they both might become new favorites for you as well.

3 out of 5 stars The Power is There, but the Message Isn't.......2006-02-28

I have owned Amanda Marshall's first album for years and finally purchased Tuesday's Child. Well, it sounds somewhat similar to the first album, but the writing on this one is lifeless. It seems that she's trying to reach for what she had on her premiere, but she can't quite pull it off. Her vocals are as powerful as always with her gritty voice and catchy acoustic guitar.

I listen to her first album, but Tuesday's Child is just background music.

5 out of 5 stars Ten on a Five Scale.......2005-07-18

This artist, & particularly this album, are the reasons I DON'T LISTEN TO THE RADIO anymore! This should have been the #1 album of 1999, & won the Grammy for Album of the Year, but no one in The States got to hear it!(Also the reason I pay no attention to the Grammys anymore)
This is one of the best albums EVER recorded - by ANYONE! Her voice is seductive yet powerful, with a growl like no one I've heard before. Her highlites are in all the right places, but her soulful delivery blows right past any air of formulaic pop to a hard-rock edge reminiscent of Sass Jordan or even an early Doro Pesch! Her poetry is intelligent & full of imagery, harkening back to the best of fellow-Canadian Joni Mitchell while rocking hard when the srory dictates. "The Best of Me" is as rockin' as anything you'll ever hear; "Too Little, Too Late" is one of those ballad-that-becomes-a-rocker masterpieces that every lame-oid on the radio wishes they could sing; "Give Up Giving In" should have been on every lite-rock station in America, & should have won a Grammy for Song of the Year! But the best song is the closer, "Out of Bounds", which is, in my opinion, THE BEST SONG IN THE HISTORY OF RECORDED MUSIC - BAR NONE!!!
On my personal list of Top 10 Albums of All Time, this is SECOND only to Airplane's "Crown of Creation". 'Nuff said!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent follow up.......2005-01-15

Amanda Marshall's second album TUESDAYS CHILD is just as good as her first. Vocally she is on top again, her voice is very powerful and makes you take notice. This album didn't have as much success as her first, but it still spun off a few hit singles in Canada. Still no real big hits in the US, all I can say is they are truly missing out on a great talent! "I Believe In You" is a moving ballad that was also featured in Touched By an Angel. "Love Lift Me" was the second single, nice uptempo song. "If I Didn't Have You" is a killer ballad, really well sung and written, also a single. The other single was "Shades of Grey". There's some nice quiet reflective ballads here like "Too Little Too Late", "Never Said Goodbye", "Wishful Thinking", "Give Up Giving In", and some great uptempo songs like "Why Don't You Love Me", "Ride", "Best of me", etc. Overall a really consistently good album!

5 out of 5 stars What a voice..........2002-05-25

Amanda Marshall is one of my favorite solo artists. As soon as this CD came out, I went out and bought it, which I never do. I usually wait until it's been out a while and can hear enough word of mouth or singles to decide if I want it. But Marshall is different. She has such an amazing voice, and her music is so passionate, heartfelt, and intense, and her first album was so terrific, that I knew this one would be as well. Even better, she writers or cowrites some of her songs. And the lyrics for all are amazing.

The scary thing is that this album is actually even better than the first. There's a wonderful range of songs about universal themes; love, loss, regret. The music is gorgeous, and there's a wide range, from uptempo to slow and soothing, so the listener never gets bored. Even better, Marshall knows how to mix it up in a way that doesn't make the album seem disjointed. Everything flows nicely. A couple numbers are a tad over the top (I'm thinkig specifically of If I Didn't Have You), but it somehow works.

I would love to be able to say what the best tracks are on this CD, but they're all so good that it's hard to pick. Certainly Believe In Me is a beautiful song. I also especially love Too Little Too Late, Best of Me, and Shades of Grey (which is absolutely haunting).

It's hard to classify Marshall's music. It's somewhere between pop/rock and Adult Contemporary. I see her as essentially a cross between a Sarah McLachlan or a Jann Arden (she's actually a little more up tempo than these two) and Melissa Etheridge with a few less guitars. It's music that is more for listening than dancing, overall.

This CD is one I think should be in any serious music fan's collection. I know it's one of my top 10 all time favorites.

5 out of 5 stars The cd that has never left my stereo!!!!.......2002-05-13

When I got this in the mail I couldn't wait to put it in my stereo, and to be truthful it hasn't left since. I absolutely adore this album and if I had to spend eternity on a deserted island and could only bring a couple of albums, this would definitely be one. She has such a strong voice and there's not one song on the album that I don't like. I liked her first album, I love this album, I can't wait till her next one will be released in the US. For anyone who is not sure whether or not to pick this one up, just know that you'll be making a huge mistake by passing this one by!!!!

Toronto is hardly a hotbed of soul, blue-eyed or otherwise. But geographic roots inform little of Amanda Marshall's third album. As the title suggests, her lively songs play out against a more personal landscape of first- and third-person perspectives and narratives. While Marshall's husky, expressive voice sometimes lapses into contemporary R&B shadings, it's often a shrewd vehicle to deliver genre-blending songs whose viewpoints and rich, telling details are anything but mundane.

Part confessional, part personal challenge, the album's songs are largely rooted in autobiography. "Double Agent" explores Marshall's bicultural roots (Canadian-Trinidadian). "Colleen (I Saw Him First)" offers up a romantic rivalry steeped in tragedy. "The Voice Inside" acknowledges the foibles of ambitions of all stripes. Marshall's songwriting collaborator-producers--Peter Asher (the onetime Beatles associate who's midwifed careers from James Taylor's to 10,000 Maniacs'), Billy Mann (Diana King, Art Garfunkel), and NYC DJ Molecules--wrap her voice in an intoxicating cocktail of orchestral flourishes, hip-hop beats, crunchy samples, and crystalline acoustic guitar that inform, tease, and cajole Marshall's spunky groove musings and solid pop instincts ("Dizzy," "Crystal Ball," "Gypsy," the title track) to new heights. --Jerry McCulley

1 out of 5 stars Absolute garbage?.......2006-05-31

I usually try to avoid reviewing an item unless I have something positive to say about it, but in this case I'm making an exception to warn others. While I can't say for sure that you'll find this CD to be as bad as I think it is, please understand that I am an Amanda Marshall fan. I think her two other albums are excellent, but this CD is so bad that after just a few plays I think it will end up in the trash can. I was hoping some of the tunes would catch on after a few listenings, but it didn't work. Save your money for something with better potential for a positive outcome.

1 out of 5 stars What The F**k Happened?.......2006-04-10

I loved Amanda's first two albums. But this? Some of the dumbest lyrics I've ever heard. This cd totally sucks. Buy her first 2
cd's, but don't touch this one!! I love her, but this cd is rotten to the core.

5 out of 5 stars Tales From The Fish- "Everybody's Got A Story" Album Review.......2006-03-23

I purchased this album as a fan of Amanda Marshall. I bought her first album and it was awesome. I have her first three studio released albums.

Now this cover of the album is not the one I have. It is totally different. I think it is a re-release unless I am mistaken because I have never seen this cover before.

Now for those that are Amanda Marshall fans might or might not like this album. She mixes a blend of pop rock, soft rock, hip-hop beats, and strings in this album. I personally think it's cool that she is experimenting with different sounds. Sure you may think she moving away from what she has normally done. But I think it's cool that she want experiment with such sounds. It's good to be progressive.

She has an excellent voice and she shows it off on this album. She can hit some low notes and the song "Marry Me" proves it.

Sure this isn't your "typical" Amanada Marshall album and I like the fact that it isn't. Sure, it's good to stay true to your original sound. But I have said before that experimenting is good.

If you have heard Amanda Marshall's other works then of course you will know that this is vastly different. But I dig all of her works regardless if they are not all the same.

I rate this album five stars. Or an 8 on a scale of one to ten.

4 out of 5 stars Awsome CD.......2006-03-11

nice change from usually angry girl groups of the indie rock persuasion. give it a listen.

4 out of 5 stars When did very listenable become a 4 Letter Word?.......2005-10-08

When did very listenable become a FOUR Letter Word called P0P?

1st let me say I have never felt compelled to write a review before, but I just had to after reading the slams given by some regarding this album.

It may be considered Pop, but Amanda is certainly way out of Britney's league. She has much better musical and vocal talents.

This was my first introduction to Amanda Marshall's music. I was board to tears with the same 10 songs all the radio stations seemed to be playing over the summer when I came across this CD at a yard sale (not cast off junk, but extras from a radio station promo). I thought well for a few bucks, I'll give it a shot, even though I'd never heard of her. I ended up listening to it over & over the rest of the summer and all fall, never tiring of it. The more I listened the more I caught the catchy lyrics and was amused by them.

I love Sunday Morning after, I have never been in that situation, but let's face it we All have known someone like that & it just cracks me up. It makes me laugh & remember even when times are tough there is always someone worse off.

I find this album very listenable from the very first playing and I can't say that about many. I found it very enjoyable and hope you will give her a chance.

After two fairly straight-ahead (and platinum-selling) rock records, Amanda Marshall lets down her not inconsiderable hair on Everybody's Got a Story. Working with producer Peter Asher (Linda Ronstadt), songwriter Billy Mann, and young beat-master Molecules, the Toronto-raised Marshall has come up with a groove-oriented pop record combining acoustic guitar, hip-hop beats, strings, and the true star of the show--the singer's own multi-octave, Joplin-esque voice. At times the new, more boho clothes fit--the title track is ideal radio fodder, the party tune "Sunday Morning After" is a hoot, and "Red Magic Marker" is hooky pop. At other times the combination sounds forced and synthetic, especially when in service to uninspired melodies like those of "The Gypsy," "Brand New Beau," and "The Voice Inside." The biggest surprise may be "Marry Me," a soft ballad written by Marshall with her bassist and paramour Rob Misener. More than any other track, "Marry Me" demonstrates the singer has learned to tone down her often overpowering vocals when necessary--making her story a lot more interesting. --Shawn Conner

4 out of 5 stars Third album.......2005-01-15

Somewhere between her last album and the release of this one, Amanda Marshall changed her style. All of a sudden, her fashion was more a part of her image, and this album also saw a change in sound. While her earlier albums had a more pop AC friendly sound, EVERYBODY HAS A STORY aims for a more contemporary pop sound. This album luckily spun a few hits in Canada, but ultimately it was viewed as a failure. Shortly after she left her label, and is now without one. It's a shame, hopefully a label picks up her, she has too much talent to be wasted here!

A lot of the songs carry a general theme about humanity, and to not be deceived by what we see. On the title track she sings about assumptions and how we can't judge someone or think we know them by just looking at them. The song "Double Agent" takes a stab at racism. "The Voice Inside" is a song about not doubting yourself. "Colleen (I Saw Him First)" is a song about a friendship that crumbles apart over a guy.

"Sunday Morning After" is a fun song about waking up after a crazy night of partying and trying to recount the events of the night before. It was a big hit from the album and deservingly so, it's a nice pop song. Lyrically the album is a bit different too, as are the arrangements. There's definately a distinct sound to this album, you either like it or hate it. I didn't really enjoy the extra background vocals chiming in now and then on the songs.

Overall not her best, but worth a listen.

5 out of 5 stars hey DJ! jack the volume i love this cd!!!.......2004-02-09

this cd is amazing!! i love it! I have all her albums and i love them! she just keeps getting better and better!

Sure this one is different from her other 2, but isn't that what makes it so great?? you can't keep doing the same thing forever.. it'll get boring after a while. So i think it's awesome that she wanted to try out something new! And she did a really great job of it! :)

There are soo many fantastic songs on here.. the voice inside, love is my witness, dizzy, double agent..etc.. And inside the tornado is really cool! it's acapella and it sounds amazing! I would love to hear more like that! :)

i was really dissapointed with all the negative reviews i read about this album! It's really not that bad.. i don't see why there were so many people that didn't like it. I think its awesome and everyone should definately get it!!

Amanda you rock!! Keep the music coming!

5 out of 5 stars Serendipity... it definitely IS !!!.......2002-10-29

Just before I changed jobs late this summer, a newly met colleague was listening to some amazing singer in his office, and that was Amanda Marshall. Well, she's never been known in Europe, so the name didn't ring a bell, and I borrowed the CD with no preconceived notions of what she'd done before.

"Oh, my God!" This CD has been in my player all the time for the past three months now and will remain on my playlist for a long, long time! Amazing voice and feel, emotional yet powerful, feminine but with such boldness and command that it's hard to figure out why the lady is not an international hit... She indeniably deserves to be! Nice attitude, independent mind, sophisticated lyrics and great musical invention are a rare find in chart music these days...

The songs are varied but there is a cohesion to the whole, a perfect mix of pop, folk, rock, groove, and especially a touch of class that permeates the whole album. The kind of record which feels like you've been punched right in the face and you're asking for more! I will not go over each track here, but suffice it to say, they're nearly all great (a couple of them, such as "Red Magic Marker" are at best redundant in my opinion, but that doesn't mean they're lousy). Obviously, the title track is an absolute blockbuster, and so is "Sunday Morning After", which my 2-year-old son just loves, though he's better-off not understanding its lyrics for a while...

I've become a huge fan of that Canadian artist overnight, and this doesn't happen quite often, so take my advice, give that record a chance, it's bound to become one of your favorite !

5 out of 5 stars Another stellar Marshall CD!!.......2002-09-08

Living close to the Canadaian border I occasionally pick up their radio stations, which is how I got hooked on Amanda Marshall's music in the first place. I also have the luxury of getting her CD when they are first released instead of waiting for the US versions. I was so excited to but this CD and have not been disappointed! It's cool to see an artist who is so versatile and does her thing damn the consequences!

The CD runs the gamut of emotion from the romantic "Marry Me" to the borderline trite "Sunday Morning After" (which in my opinion should have never been a single to the radio). There is some great string work in "The Gypsy" and a really funky-bluesy trumpet in the intro to "Brand New Beau". Amanda is not afraid to experiment with funky beats, spoken word and (maybe too much) synth work. My favorite songs are the title track and "Double Agent".

I have been listening to this CD a lot hte past year or so and am not even close to tired of it yet! Buy this CD - Amanda is an amazing artist.

5 out of 5 stars This is her story........2002-08-21

Amanda Marshall has a style very different from many other artists. When she reformed her style for this CD, many people gave her a hard time. But if you ask me, it's an improvement!!! This is the first CD of hers I bought (not the last) and it was far from a disappointment.

It's hard for me to choose my favourite songs because I like every single one. But I'd have to say "Colleen" is definitely up there. It doesn't strike you at first because it's slower, but the lyrics are honest and engaging. Another favourite is "Double Agent", which is quicker and fun to sing along with. Amanda has added some pop flavour to her style without overpowering her voice and detracting from her charm and the honesty of her lyrics. If you want my advice, don't hesitate to buy this CD. It just gets better every time you listen.

5 out of 5 stars Witty Pop Rock.......2006-01-29

This is a great collection of the music of one of the best singer songwriters in "Pop Rock" ever. Another example of what's wrong with American Radio is the complete lack of air time for Amanda Marshall. Her music can be uplifting, humorous, society challenging, or over the top romantic, but always good. You may have heard some of her songs on movie or TV soundtracks, just not on American radio.
This really is a very well put together best of collection and is a great introduction to her work. So buy it, try it, then get the rest of her albums, and play them when you give someone a ride, you will be the cool guy that knows more than the Grammy Committees.

    5 out of 5 stars Amanda Marshall's best!.......2005-07-30

Excellent collection! Now all she needs is a live cd and life will be perfect!

    5 out of 5 stars Career retrospective.......2004-04-22

It may seem too soon for an Amanda Marshall collection, but she has the hits, and it marks the end of her contract with Sony. I guess the split was good for both of them, since Amanda felt they didn't promote her last album enough, and that the album didn't sell very much at all for them. So we have 16 tracks, 14 of which are hits, and 2 are unreleased new songs. "Until We Fall In" is a uptempo song that is nice, and "Cross My Heart" is a nice ballad. Fans will want it for those, plus having all the hits on one disc. From her first album, we have the hits "Birmingham", "Let It Rain", "Beautiful Goodbye", "Fall From Grace", "Dark Horse" and "Sittin On Top Of The World". From her second album TUESDAYS CHILD we have "I Believe In You", "Love Lift Me", "If I Didn't Have You" and "Shades of Grey". From her underrated 2001 album EVERYBODYS GOT A STORY we have the title track, "Sunday Morning After", "Double Agent" and "Marry Me". A must have collection for any fan.

    5 out of 5 stars definately a must have!!!.......2004-02-09

this album is awesome!! It has all her hits plus 2 new songs.. which are amazing by the way!!! I am seriously addicted to both and i keep them on repeat for hours! ;) :)

i'm a HUGE fan of hers and this is something that everyone should have! And you can take it with you anywhere and listen to all your favourite songs without having to switch cd's! :) This album rocks!! And so does Amanda!!

I'm really excited to see what's next for her! So i'll just keep waiting here impatiently and listening to this awesome cd!

If you're looking for a cd to buy, then get this one! (just look for the big AM on the cover)

    that's all i'm sayin'....

5 out of 5 stars New to Amanda Marshall...this CD will hook yah.......2004-01-02

If you heard any tunes by this CDN sweetheart and were not sure what else she sings...this CD is a must. Amanda has been on the Canadian scene for a few years now and her voice and songwriting is the cats meow. Intermission covers all her hits from Dark Horse,Birmingham,Everybody's got a story,I believe and on and on. As a bonus, there are two unreleased songs..Cross my heart and Until we fall. Why these were never released before is still buggin my mind!!!! If you are a Amanda Marshall fan and you want to have one of her cd's in your car with you at all times, I highly recommend this CD. I have not bought many new releases as of late and I am glad I was cd shopping when I discovered this gem. Amanda at her finest. My baby knows how to get my groove going!!!!!
