A good overview of Sting's radio hits and popular album tracks with only one major omission ("Mad About You"), Fields of Gold also offers three previously-unreleased songs. "This Cowboy Song" and "When We Dance" appear on no other album, while "We'll Be Together" is an alternate version. The import version of this collection offers a substantially different (and expanded) track listing, dropping "Fortress Around Your Heart," "Be Still My Beating Heart," and "Why Should I Cry for You"; and adding "Mad About You," "Nothing 'Bout Me," "Seven Days," "It's Probably Me," "Love is the Seventh Wave," and "Demolition Man." --Gavin McNett
Customer Reviews:
Great songs, where's vol. 2?.......2007-04-12
Sting left the Police and had a tremendously successful solo career. Lots of great songs are on this cd, I just wish a couple more had made it like "It's Probably Me", "Shape of My Heart", "Love is the 7th Wave", "Seven Days" and "Soul Cages". The songs on here are great so I want to give it 5 stars but Sting has released so many more good songs and albums since this that we really need a volume 2 and soon. But as far as the period that this compilation covers, it is a fine way to pick up his best material from those albums.
Its OK.......2007-02-14
Bought it for Feilds Of Gold the only song on it I really like.
Fields of Gold: The Best of Sting.......2007-01-17
What can I say. If you like Sting and his many styles, then this is a must have!
Sting is a Hero!.......2006-12-08
Best Sting collection ever includes most hits like Fields of gold
A must have highly recommended!
misleading at best.......2006-11-06
It's simply not the best of Sting '84-'94.
The version of We'll Be Together (a great song) is an alternate take (mix?), VASTLY inferior to the album / radio version. It's anemic. Lacks the punch. In a word -- sucks.
That you're not told this on the cover is misleading.
I really enjoy Mr. Sumner's music. All the other tunes are as they should be, and they are terrific. 4-5 stars. But don't buy this product if you expect to hear what you've heard on the album or the radio.

Customer Reviews:
This one just about covers all of the bases.......2007-07-29
I love the remastered sound of this double CD. I already have every CD of Cat Stevens (known to me) covering from 1966 up through 1978. But I felt like this Gold Series CD set was still worth buying because it captures his chronological history best of all compared to other double or single CD releases. I really needed to stream line my collection somehow for easy accessability and listening conveniece during drives etc. So this edition starts with the early hits from the mid 60s and moves forward to about '78 (his last recording as Cat Stevens) and then adds one last track post Cat Stevens era called "Indian Ocean" recorded after his religious conversion and name change to Yusuf Islam). I know some of you might be thinking I'm exaggerating but I've got a complete collection of early singles as well as the album/CD import Matthew & Son from his early recording label Deram. I think a lot of good choices were made during the compilation of this double CD "Gold" for certain. Even tracks never included on a studio album release are included here on this one such as "Another Saturday Night" and a couple from the out of print Harold and Maude soundtrack. My favorite key album track from his last album as Cat Stevens: 'Back to Earth' is included here also entitled: "Last Love Song". We (especially I) should probably thank an old girlfriend I once had back in elementary school days named "Lisa" for all of this information I'm sharing with you. She's the one that would not stop playing Cat Stevens for me (as a soon to be 5th grader). This was also during the summer of '73 when I lived in England where Cat Steven's was very popular. It's all she ever played and listened to in her living room for months on end. It drove me nuts at the time but I started to miss the music when I moved back to the United States. That explains at least some of my interest in Cat Steven's music anyway. But anyway, this is the best double CD compilation yet and plus it's very affordable.
Recommed it.......2007-04-01
Many ealier works of Cat is included in this double CD. These CDs are well worth it. Seat back, relax and enjoy!!
Good stuff for Cat Stevens fans !.......2007-01-15
Plenty of enjoyable classics from the Cat , along with a few I hadn't yet heard . So glad to know he's back on the music making track again !
Cat Is Gold.......2007-01-12
Has the best from all his albums, if you love the "Cat" you'll love this
(Most Of) The Best Of Cat.......2006-07-17
The main thing that strikes me about Cat Stevens (or Yusuf Islam as he calls himself now) is that, during his Cat Stevens phase from 1966 to 1978, he made really, really *nice* music. The melodies, the words, and of course, the man's distinctive voice and guitar-picking....just really good, spiritual, uplifting songs. He is an incredibly talented troubadour, and this 2-CD set,"Gold," collects a healthy dose of classic Cat Stevens music. Although, as other reviewers have pointed out, "Gold" is a bit incomplete, most of the big hit songs are here, such as "Matthew And Son," "Morning Has Broken," "Wild World," "Moonshadow," etc., but "Gold" also features tracks from Stevens' later albums that aren't as well known. These songs are just as wonderful as the hits, including "Angelsea," "Last Love Song," and the very impressive, 18-minute "Foreigner Suite." And, for the grand finale, "Gold" features the brand-new song, "Indian Ocean," which Stevens/Islam recorded for charity. It is a *beautiful* song, and worth the price of admission alone. There are several Cat Stevens compilations already on the market, but "Gold" is an excellent one, and a great introduction to the magical music of Cat Stevens.

Customer Reviews:
What a wonderful pairing of two albums on one CD--DEAN MARTIN IS GOLD !!!.......2006-07-18
This CD has a magnificent 24 tracks from two record albums Dean Martin put out when he was still recording with Capitol Records. Yes, I agree somewhat with reviewers who write that the first set of songs (from the album This Time I'm Swingin'!) is stronger than the second set of twelve songs from the album Pretty Baby; but overall this is still a wonderful CD. Dean's voice is in fine form and I liked the way the two different styles of songs are placed here on this single CD. There are the songs from This Time I'm Swingin'! which highlight Dean's voice with the incredible work of Nelson Riddle; while on the other hand the last twelve songs represent what Dean could accomplish with a chorus backing him up and the talents of Gus Levene.
The CD opens strong with the vibrant "I Can't Believe That You're In Love With Me;" other BIG highlights from the first twelve songs are "You're Nobody 'Til Somebody Loves You" (my personal favorite) and "On The Street Where You Live." "Until The Real Thing Comes Along" is just as beautifully orchestrated. Wow!
The second set of twelve songs that Dean did with Gus Levene gives a different feel to the second half of the CD. This truly IS more of a "Ray Conniff" type of musical arrangement with Dean squarely in the middle but still not quite as strong because the chorus detracts from his performance just a little. Nevertheless, I loved "I Don't Know Why (I Just Do)" because Dean's voice and the musical arrangement is perfect! Dean does this song flawlessly--as he did all his songs. There's an interesting rendition of "I Can't Give You Anything But Love" and "Pretty Baby" is beautifully written and orchestrated.
The quality of the sound is wonderful. You'd never know these recordings were made so many years ago! The liner notes also include reproductions of the front and the reverse of both record album jackets--tough to find these days! The liner notes include the song credits, too--a nice plus!
In short, the reviewers are right--you simply can't be without this CD if you want to have a Dean Martin collection. These albums are unfairly getting more difficult to find as the years go by and that's a terrible shame. I also highly recommend this CD for fans of classic pop vocals. Moreover, fans of Nelson Riddle will be delighted because the first twelve songs are orchestrated by Riddle himself. You just can't miss with this one! Great job, Dino! SMILES
A Piece Of Nostalgia.......2005-04-01
Dean Martin's music had been part of our household when I was growing up. He was one of my late parents' favorite singers and they collected a good number of his albums. Influenced by my late parents' music, Mr. Martin had become one of my favorites too and I especially loved his "Pretty Baby" album. My late parents must be beaming with pride up in Heaven knowing that I've been enjoying their kind of music, the music I grew up with and still appreciate to this day.
This compilation CD was taken from two of his best-ever albums, "This Time I'm Swingin'!" and "Pretty Baby." The first twelve tracks were superbly arranged and conducted by the great Nelson Riddle and taken from the album "This Time I'm Swingin'!" and highlights a couple of songs from "My Fair Lady," "I've Grown Accustomed To Her Face" and "On The Street Where You Live." Other highlights are "Just In Time," "Until The Real Thing Comes Along" and "Someday" (You'll Want Me To Want You).
The last twelve tracks were from my all-time favorite album "Pretty Baby" and fabulously orchestrated by Gus Levene. All the songs in this album are so remarkable and Dean Martin's favorite songs that he has often sung and his interpretations with his back-up singers (I love it!) are so splendid. My very favorites are "The Object Of My Affection," "Only Forever," "I Don't Know Why" (I Just Do), "Once In A While," "I Can't Give You Anything But Love," "Sleepy Time Gal," "Nevertheless" (I'm In Love With You) and "It's Easy To Remember."
Listen to this CD and you'll be transported back in time. It's one of the simplest ways to enjoy the music of our parents and reminisce the good old days. It's a piece of nostalgia!
THE ABSOLUTE BEST OF DINO!!!!!!!!.......2003-08-01
This is Dean Martin at his absolute BEST! These two albums are simply the best LPs he ever put out. Every song on both albums is the quintessential Dean Martin. The man and the music that everyone thinks of when you hear the name Dino. They were recorded in '57 and '60 before he changed over to the Reprise label and started recording country ballads that most Dino fans find dissappointing. His years at Capitol are FAR superior to the years he wasted at Reprise (I blame Frank for this). I have a few of the 2-fer cds of his years at reprise and it's not even close. These songs are perfectly arranged and ably conducted by Nelson Riddle and Gus Levene, who are simply the best at complimenting Dean (as if he needs any help!) Dean effortlessly delvers each song with perfection and melifluous cadence you can't find anywhere else. The first album is loose, easy and relaxing even though the title says otherwise. The second album is just as smooth, but most of the songs do feature an unnecessary choral background that only draws attention from Dean (this is the only drawback from a perfect album). "I Can't Give You Anything But Love"(my favorite) "You're Nobody Till Somebody Loves You", "Heaven Can Wait" and "I Can't Believe That You're In Love With Me" are simply Dean at his best. Even the artwork is great which features the original album covers. If you own only one Dean Martin album i strongly urge that it be this one. It deserves more than 5 stars and is worth every penny! You will NOT be dissappointed!
THE BEST OF THE BEST! 5 STARS ++++++.......2003-07-21
Deans singing style, personality, and gift of his voice really shines through on this CD. I have to say that each and every song on "This Time Im Swingin!" is perfection. On the Pretty Baby album "Its Easy To Remember" is my personal favorite. If you are interested in starting a Dean Martin collection this is the one to get and you will be hooked!
Great Sound! Great Swing!.......2003-03-05
Wow, is this great! I can't stop listening to it! As a kid in the Seventies, I remember the aging Dean Martin who became a parody of the bad Vegas performer. This, however, is nothing like what I remember. I'm not sure what drew me to buy the CD but I'm glad I did. The crisp sound of the orchestra, the bounce in his voice. It is sooo good!
As far as Pretty Baby, the background singing isn't as bad as some reviews make it out to be. It is somewhat dated but it too is very enjoyable.
Buy the CD! You won't regret it!

Amazed this is out of print in the US, but not in other countries.......2006-10-20
I love Bad Co. and Paul Rodgers other work, but didn't know much about Free. This great blues!!! I'm surprised Free wasn't bigger that it was. Amazing stuff. A must have if you like Paul Rodgers or Bad Co. Either that or get all the albums. Some of the best blues I've heard.
Really amazed this is out of print in the US. Still available new on Island in Europe.
All the energy and power of THE BLOOZ--.......2006-05-27
Listen, did I hear someone say "lack of energy?"
Get this album, as my lovely wife did for me last Christmas, from Amazon, BTW, and listen to this lineup: Fire & Water, Mr. Big, I'm A Mover, Woman, All Right Now, Oh I Wept, Stealer, Walk in My Shadow... Oh, get up off the floor, amigo... see, it's you that's having a lack of energy... I know, this music is like a workout, emotionally, aurally, and in the old pleasure zone too. Rodgers & the late great Paul Kossoff surely knew how to sell a song, didn't they? Perhaps these fellows were near the best, not only at the time, but in any century of Rock/blues/git-down-kick in-the-mud blooz music. Yowzah!
A cross between Cream and Humble Pie..........2004-10-27
Double CD covering all eight of their albums with an informative booklet from John McDermott. A cross between Cream and Humble Pie this band was a major stepping stone to the commercial success to some of your favorite '70's bands like Foghat, Foreigner and of course Bad Company. They had more talent than any of those bands (with the late Paul Kossoff, Paul Rodgers, Simon Kirke, John Martyn, Rabbit Bundrick, Andy Fraser, and Tetsu Yamauchi) but I think the thing that kept them from being more successful was their lack of energy, "All Right Now" (with perhaps the greatest rock riff ever) and one or two other songs being the exception.
Excellent value for the very best of Free.......2004-10-02
The short and troubled history of the band Free is well known, but suffice to say that they probably did not last long enough to really fulfill their potential (this was particularly true of the tragic Paul Kossoff, who died at 25 and could have become one of Britain's most memorable blues guitarists). However, in the band's five years, through six studio albums and one live one, they established an instantly recognizable sound and created some lasting, classic music in a blues-rock vein. This double CD set of remastered recordings includes approximately half the contents of all these albums, and includes the very best known Free album tracks and singles. The sound of the band was, for most of their career, a simple, stripped-down formula of drums, guitar, bass and vocals (all delivered at near-maximum volume), with modest amounts of keyboards; this raw, basic sound does not date and retains the same powerful, visceral appeal now that it did 30 years ago (the only difference being that with the remastering for CD it sounds even louder and more immediate than ever). The passion of the playing and singing pulls the listener into the music - background music it is not! - and despite the rock style, there is a tangible and touching melancholy in some of the songs, for example Kossoff's heartfelt solos on `Heavy load' and `Come together in the morning'. Very welcome additions are two tracks from Kossoff's first solo album, on which he is accompanied by members of Free and also the distinctive guitar sound of John Martyn.
This is undoubtedly the best compilation of Free's studio recordings currently available (there are several too superficial single CD collections, and the box set `Songs of yesterday', though excellent, includes much rare, unreleased material in place of the original versions) and is excellent value. My only slight complaint is that more was not included; there is sufficient room on each CD for several more tracks to have been added, which would have made the collection even better. The album also includes a larger than normal size booklet which includes a brief history of the band and high quality black and white archive photos. An essential album for aficionados of British blues-rock.

A Great Album - But A Rip Off.......2007-05-26
Why do companies insist on re-releasing albums under different names and try to pawn them off as something new? The great compilation "Love And Affection: Joan Armatrading Classics 1975-1983) is still on the market. This is track for track, even in it's order, the same as that. If you like Joan Armatrading definitely buy ONE of these two wonderful compilations, but DO NOT buy BOTH unless you have some money you feel like throwing away. And for that matter, if you want to throw it away, just mail it to me!!
Joan Armatradiing Gold.......2006-02-28
This was returned. Where is my credit?
Joan at her best.......2006-01-20
This is a very fine collection. It seems to have all of the best songs recorded by Joan during this period, including many that I had never heard before. My favorite tracks are Show Some Emotion, I'm Lucky, and Me, Myself, I. No one had a blend quite like Joan's; part rock, part folk, and part jazz. This blend is most apparent on disc one, disc two has tracks that are closer to the realm of pop with mixed results. I don't care for the last third of disc two, and especially dislike I Love it When You Call Me Names, a sadistic homage to domestic violence. What could Joan have been thinking? Nonetheless, there is an embarassment of riches on these two cd's, and they'll be spinning in my system for years to come.
Best of from 1975-1983.......2005-08-09
A great overlook of Joans time at A&M Records from 1975-1983. The 43 songs on this two disc collection include a soundtrack song and studio songs that were tacked on a live album and two "new" songs that were incuded on a greatest hits album. Me, Myself, I was her most popular album, and there are 8 of the ten songs from it included here. Don't know why record companies do that. Seems that if it were her most popular album, then all the fans must already have it and would like to hear other songs. This CD is a great overview of a career in motion. The songs are in cronological order and the listener can hear the growth and change of her talent thru the years. Highly recommended. Liner notes are only so-so.

The line between evangelist and entertainer has always been somewhat indistinct. But as showcased on this 43-track, double-disc collection culled from his '87-'96 recordings for Elektra/Nonesuch/Atlantic, Michael Feinstein's dedication to spreading the gospel of the American song often blurs it beyond recognition. While the singer's pedigree for the task is impeccable (a long-term stint as Ira Gershwin's assistant and early career sponsorship by Liza Minnelli), his interpretations often succeed by playing off a tense axis of fervent emotionalism and a joyous sense of irreverence.
If his readings of romantic standards can sometimes tend toward the precious, they're often balanced here by sheer dramatic power and telling insights ("Isn't It Romantic" fairly bristles with ironic chauvinism) and a few loopy curves ("The Mole People," the Sherman Brothers' "The Ugly Bug Ball," and the previously unreleased "Rhode Island Is Famous for You"). Feinstein's dedicated song archaeology is also showcased on several gems: "Violin," a duet with Liza Minnelli; "My Favorite Year," a rejected ballad for the film of that name; the sublime "lost" Gershwin classic "Ask Me Again."
Sprinkled with live performances (the forum where Feinstein's talents seem most energized) and studio outtakes and featuring a lengthy print interview with the singer, the set chronicles both the pioneering efforts of one of pop music's most successful revivalists and, crucially, the cream of his beloved American songwriters, from stalwarts Gershwin, Berlin, and Porter to later legends like Herman, Styne, Lane, Martin, and Mercer. --Jerry McCulley

Mixed feelings.......2005-10-05
This album has some GREAT songs on it; sophisticated swing being one of my favorites. However many of the other songs are too operatic and lame. I give three stars but this album is definatly worth it just for some of the better songs.
Your love for this superb collection will be here to stay..........2002-07-18
The magnificently talented Michael Feinstein has made one wonderful album after another for nearly two decades. Now that Elektra and Rhino have put together this anthology, I am blown away by the versatility and diversity in Feinstein's recorded output. Such amazing rare gems, combined with the most beloved favorites in the history of American Popular Song. Assembled with wit, intelligence, and obvious affection on the part of the record company, this set is a keeper. You'll love it!
He's done it again.......2002-07-15
Is there anything this man can't sing? This collection is so varied as to be the definitive collection of songs for any occassion.
This is perfect background music for a dinner party for a whole group but especially for two. Light, romantic and just gorgeous. You just can't go wrong when Michael Feinstein is your musical choice.
Way to go Michael, you've done it again!
Absolutely 'S WONDERFUL!.......2002-06-10
There are very few contemporary performers who can hold their own with the truly great interpreters of American popular song. Michael Feinstein is truly the ONLY performer of the "younger" generation who really understands what these songs are all about. His incredible knowledge of this music, and his enthusiasm and passion for it have fueled his career. Rhino Records has done a truly outstanding job of putting together an anthology that exemplifies why Mr. Feinstein has become so beloved by audiences around the world. The packaging is excellent, and filled with interesting photos and background information about many of the selections.
This collection not only contains all the favorites one would expect, but a neat group of surprises too. I especially love the duets with people like Liza Minnelli and Rosemary Clooney, and the various collaborative efforts with songwriters like Jule Styne and Burton Lane accompanying Michael at the piano.
This collection is a classic to be treasured. Bravo Michael!
Bravo Rhino!
A beautiful 2 disc CD-another hit for Michael.......2002-06-09
I have every CD Michael has ever made and this is by far one of the best ones because of Michael's range in singing and his wonderful singing voice. I love his duets with Rosemary Clooney and Liza Minelli. He is a wonderful performer on this double CD and am looking foward to the next CD.

If this is the ONLY Frampton cd you buy this year..........2007-03-13
If this is the only Frampton cd you buy this year, you will not be wasting your money. This cd compiles songs from his early solo albums thru the 2003 release of Now. Most but not all of the best songs from those albums are included on this. You will miss out on some great songs just buying this, but if your not a big Frampton Fan, this cd will turn you into one!
Do you feel like we do........2007-02-22
I really wanted the CD for the live version of "Do you feel like we do", and I was not disappointed. Great CD!
A Great Retrospective.......2005-11-17
This is by far the most comprehensive Peter Frampton collection to date spanning 1972 through 2003. He only had four major hits: "Nassau/Baby I Love Your Way", "Show Me The Way", "I'm In You" and "I Can't Stand It No More". The rest of the album consists of select album cuts, instrumentals and cover songs that brilliantly showcase a gifted and versatile musician who shows no signs of waning yet.
More to Peter Frampton than voicebox solos & fire crackers.......2005-05-18
Finally, a chance to show the world that there's more to Peter Frampton than voicebox solos and fire crackers...
I have over 1,000 albums on vinyl but for some strange reason only WINDS OF CHANGE & COMES ALIVE are included...other Frampton albums I owned (FRAMPTON & SOMETHING'S HAPPENING) were on 8 Track.
I cannot wait to get this double CD, pop it in and crank up the volumn to, ohhh maybe 11, and listen to studio versions of ITS A PLAIN SHAME, ALL I WANT TO BE (IS BY YOUR SIDE), SOMETHIN'S HAPPENING, and NOWHERE"S TO FAR FOR MY BABY as well as the more sedate NASSAU/BABY I LOVE YOUR WAY.
And while I didn't enjoy a lot of Peter's post ALIVE output (long story, involves old girlfriend...) I liked enough of it to look forward to revealing some unknown (to me)gems in Disc 2...and that's half the fun of these career spanning collections. There's very few performers that you can follow for an entire career .
My advise is "Buy it for Disc One, enjoy it more for Disc 2"

Odd Couple That Works.......2006-06-25
A few years back I found a vinyl copy of NORMA DELORES EGSTROM FROM JAMESTOWN NORTH DAKOTA at a flea market in Albuquerque, N.M. Having loved Peggy Lee all of my life, but never having heard this particular album, I bought it for a buck or so. (I first paid really close attention to Peggy Lee when I was around twelve years old, at an alcoholic neighbor lady's house on my block, where I did chores for pocket change. This overly generous lady, who resembled Phyllis Diller, would drink gin out of a tall paper cup all day long with the drapes closed, and she would let me paw through her LP collection, where I discovered LATIN ALA LEE. In the following weeks, I would play that scratchy record over and over on my besotted host's console stereo). By the time I first heard NORMA DELORES EGSTROM..., I was in my mid-forties (this was around 1997), and was now thoroughly acquainted with most of Ms. Lee's catalog. I put the album on my turntable for the first time with some trepidation, as this great singer's first few post-Capitol albums in the seventies were, to say the least, not among her best efforts. Boy was I surprised! How had this excellent album eluded me for all of those years? Here was a mix of contemporary material mixed with old chestnuts that was handled with the flare of Peggy Lee in her prime, and I could not have been more pleased. The ragged edges and shortness of breath that were beginning to show up in Lee's voice around this time only added to the charm of these performances, and one tune, Leslie Duncan's "Love Song" moved me to tears. "When I Found You" was another standout on this set, gently rocking and confirming once more that Peggy Lee could sing just about anything with class and style. For those who still doubt, pick this "twofer" up and marvel at how Lee handles songs of the younger generation at that time, "Superstar" and "A Song For You." If they weren't already, Peg helped them become new standards. The version of the established standard, "I'll Be Seeing You," on this CD, is now among my very favorite Peggy Lee performances.
Now there's not much I can add to what other reviewers have written here about I'M A WOMAN, an album I've been waiting for years to come out on CD. Peggy's sly, swingin' rendition of "There Ain't No Sweet Man (That's Worth The Salt Of My Tears)" is alone worth the price of admission, but every song here is perfectly sung. One can just see the twinkle in Peggy's eye (and the tongue in her cheek) as she tosses off "Mack The Knife" in a half-whisper at breakneck speed. The sound effects make it fresh and funny, while somehow only enhancing the song's sinister undertones. "A Taste Of Honey" is gorgeous, and "Alley Cat Song" is one of Lee's great signature tunes, along with the title track. Although Rick Nelson's version of "I'm Walkin'" is not threatened by Ms. Lee's take, she makes it shine in her own, effortless way.
Taken together, these two records are a solid set, but are quite different; each could easily stand on its own. One note of caution: as mentioned by others, some of the tracks on NORMA DELORES EGSTROM... are not the same takes that were used on the LP version, and are not quite as polished (although certainly not bad). My guess is that the original masters were lost or were damaged. I was vaguely disappointed, and would have deducted half a star, but Amazon doesn't provide that option to customers, so the five-star rating stands, as these albums should be bought and heard by fans and newbies alike. They're great!
SUBLIME 70'S PEGGY LEE MASTERPIECE~BRAVO!!!.......2006-04-05
As a sixties teen who loved rhythm and blues and the great American classic singers, Peggy Lee always stood out as one of the ultimate greats and this awesome two-fer Import is THE masterpiece all of us baby-boomer fans have been waiting for with "Norma Deloris Egstrom from Jamestown, North Dakota" being the "finally" released on CD treasure...and why it took so long remains a mystery but it is clear that nobody at the Capitol Tower in the US has a clue what went on with Peggy Lee or Nancy Wilson in the musically bankrupt seventies but thank heavens for the Capitol Records EMI Import division or else this release probably would have not happened in our lifetime!!!!
Peggy Lee is at her jazzy and sultry best throughout "I'm A Woman" purring out classic greats such as "Mack The Knife", "A Taste Of Honey" and her standard "I'm A Woman" which is still being sung by young jazz singing hopefuls in clubs across the country but none quite as effective as the definitive and very sensual version found here in this magnificent set. This compelling and engaging collection is truly a lost classic that is now thankfully available for all to savor and enjoy.
Next is the magnificent lost masterpiece "Norma Deloras" and from the great opener "Love Song" composed by Leslie Duncan, it is clear that Peggy Lee is going to take all of these great contemporary standards and make them completely her own...this sultry and engrossing version is amazingly great! "Razor (Love Me As I Am) is a hypnotic Lee masterful vocal that should have been a huge hit such as "Fever" but by the pathetically tired musical seventies this sublime version was far too great for the airwaves but remains one of Peggy's all-time seductive best performances..."When I Found You" was a big success with fans and a stirring highlight in her great seventies concerts...this wonderfully romantic song Peggy belts to great effect becomming a real stunning DIVA turn. Hauntingly brilliant is a gorgeous version of "A Song For You" show Peggy Lee made the transition from classic composers to contemporary with great success while a dramatic unreleased "It Changes" is another sublime story telling song that echo's Peggy's Grammy winning "Is That All There Is?".
A melancholy "It Takes Too Long To Learn To Live Alone" is a tender and deeply soulful song that is a slightly different version from the original release..."Superstar" shows that Peggy went deep inside of contemporary standards and made them her own and this definitive version is a fine example.
"Just For A Thrill" sets the mood for chilled Dom Perigom being another Peggy Lee classic and one of her all time finest...another wonderous performance is contained in the exhuberant and romantic "Someone Who Cares" which has fascinating tempo changes and a strong yet sensitive vocal from Peggy that also shows off her fine technique.
Two golden classics close this priceless set and never has either sounded quite so gorgeous..."The More I See You" is tender and sublime as is the sentimental and incredibly moving "I'll Be Seeing You" which perfectly end one of the very finest collections from one of the greatest singers of the 20th Century who is at her very best throughout this wonderous and sublime collection...BRAVO to Miss Peggy Lee and we love and miss you...for anyone who loves a great singer in peak form do not miss this tremendous Peggy Lee classic that is truly a timeless masterpiece...one of the greatest ever!!!
An odd couple.......2005-10-30
The first half of this twofer, from 1963, is yet another terrific collection of Lee's signature mix of jazz and R&B vocals. Just about every one of them is a keeper, although "I'm Walkin'" sounds a little forced. (After the lightning-in-a-bottle brilliance of "Fever," she probably should have quit while she was ahead on the rock and roll covers.) Also, "I'm A Woman" tries to fit a few too many words into too little space, but then who could resist a line like "I can make a dress out of a feedbag/And I can make a man out of you"? I have no complaints at all about the other ten songs; they're all wonderful.
Now, about the second album (whose title, of course, is Lee's real name), I must confess my first reaction was one of morbid curiosity. The release date (1972) and that picture of her looking like Barbra Streisand had me thinking it might be a disastrous effort at contemporary pop. Well, it is contemporary pop, but it turns out that she was pretty good at that too. It definitely shows its vintage, with most of the songs featuring mellow acoustic guitars, electric pianos, and sensitive-guy lyrics. But if you like that style and Lee's voice, they do go together surprisingly well. (The only real dud is the previously unreleased "It Changes," which really should have stayed unreleased!) The slightly countryish "Love Song" and dramatic "Razor" are miles from her usual style, but they sound great. Some of my other favorites are "It Takes Too Long To Learn To Live Alone," one of those painfully-'70s tales of suburban loneliness, and the better than you'd expect cover of the Carpenters' "Superstar." (Think about it, that bombastic chorus is perfect for an ex-big band singer.) And just to remind us that it's still the same Peggy Lee, the closing "I'll Be Seeing You" is just as stunning as you'd expect.
Two contrasting albums from 1963 and 1972.......2005-08-31
The first album here shows Peggy at the peak of her popularity in the early sixties, performing a mix of soft, romantic songs and sultry blues songs, though the dividing line between the two is not always clear-cut. The title track was a major American hit for Peggy but the strength of the album is such that it doesn't really stand out. There are many other fine songs here including The alley cat song, I'm walking, Come rain or come shine and a very impressive interpretation of Mack the knife. You're sick of that song? Listen to Peggy's version - it makes it fresh and exciting. Further classics include I'll get by, I left my heart in San Francisco (another brilliant interpretation) and A taste of honey.
The second album may be an end-of-contract release as it first appeared in 1972, the year in which Peggy left Capitol for the second and last time. Don't let that put you off - while it is not one of Peggy's strongest albums, it is well worth hearing nevertheless. This mellow, romantic album begins with Love song, which was also recorded by Olivia Newton-John. Other contemporary songs include A song for you and Superstar, both written by Leon Russell and recorded by the Carpenters. Older songs are represented by The more I see you and I'll be seeing you. A previously unreleased track, It changes, is added to the album for this release.
This twofer is worth buying for the first album alone, but I suspect that many Peggy Lee fans will (like me) enjoy both albums here.
You Can Love Me Like I am, or Good-bye.......2005-01-14
Both of the albums included here are superb. I prefer Norma Deloris Egstrom from Jamestown North Dakota - it's the later of the two.
While Peggy Lee's singing can never be faulted, sometimes her recordings from the 60's - 70's can sound dated, kitsch and brash. That is not the case here. Practically every cut is a dream, and the orchestrations do not overwhelm with "local color" and novelty. I also want to point out that the B&W cover photgraph of Norma Deloris Egstrom is a stunner. This one's a keeper. The song Razor is sublime. Enjoy.

Bravo!.......2003-03-10
After experiencing Salminen's delightfully sinister Hagen in the Met DVD of Gotterdammerung, I ordered this album and was not disappointed. It is a gem, with Salminens's vocal power and expressiveness well displayed in every selection.
Magic power.......2000-06-25
This is a schoolbook example of professional bass-singing. Matti Salminen compasses his way from Mozart and Rossini via Puccini and Verdi to Rickard Strauss. And he does so with bravura. His voice is extremely dark and powerful (that fact has been very well handled by the sound engineer - the balance of the recording is perfect).
Salminen sings both Rossini, Wagner and Strauss as if they all were his favorite composer, showing no weakness in any kind of the very mixed repertoire of this recording. He is funny when called for, and in the most powerful (and tragic)parts he is extremely thrilling. Emotionality and caracterization are parts of Salminens great strength as a opera singer.
If you're a fan of bass-singing, this is a must for you to have. Even if you're not, it is very fun to be able to hear some of the greatest bass-arias, which othervise oftenly are neglected on opera-collections.
The orchestral playing of the Lahti forces is also very good.

Customer Reviews:
A piece of history.......2006-06-03
Many of the songs on this recording are not available in sheet music, and although the sound quality isn't "leading edge" it makes me feel as though I am listening to actual performers back in the 30's & 40's, with young and gifted singers like Frank Sinatra, Jo Stafford, and Mel Torme, as well as others who are nameless or unknown to me on this album, and a delight to listen to. Manhattan Tower is why I bought this CD, and I got so much more from it than I bargained for. The illusion I have when I play it is that I am a young jazz artist in New York, feeling the pulse of the city and filling up with everything about being a part of New York.
A BIG disappointment!.......2004-08-19
I bought this CD for the Slaughter on Tenth Avenue soundtrack ballet by Richard Rodgers and Lennie Hayton. But none of the tracks on this CD can be appreciated. It is a mono recording, and that immediately leaves you with a very incomplete sound. No amount of treble and bass adjustment can eliminate the awful tinny sound throughout the disc.
