Lee Rocker sounds great. Modern rockabilly but reminiscent of Gene Vincent and Eddie Cochran with a punch. Great guitar playing by Brophy Dale really makes this cd outstanding, he is excellent. I highly recommend.

5 out of 5 stars Lee Rocker's "The Best of".......2007-05-09

Love this CD! I've seen Lee Rocker and his band in person a few times in the LA area. After hearing them, I knew I had to purchase one of his CD's. I also purchased one for a friend who heard mine and liked his music so much, they wanted one too. It is great "feel-good" Rock-a-Billy music. I highly recommend this CD. You can't go wrong.

Album Description

Racin' The Devil is Lee Rocker's most diverse album yet, and a roots music fan's dream come true. The CD features twelve songs of scorching rockabilly, roadhouse romps and straight-ahead, old-school rock 'n' roll, highlighted by nine originals that are by far the strongest of his career. And his reinventions of The Stray Cats mega-hit "Rock This Town" and his first post-Cats band Phantom, Rocker & Slick's "Running From The Hounds" are foot-stomping and ecstatic statements of pure joy

Racin' The Devil is full of terrific songwriting, great playing and super-energized performances. Anyone who loves raw, rocking music, be it blues, rockabilly, or straight ahead rock 'n' roll has got to love this album.

From garage rockers and deeply textured roots anthems to the rockabilly sounds he helped reinvent, the album is a rich piece of Americana, as timeless and unique as the music Rocker fell in love with as a youngster. The originals bite with a powerful snap, the covers become his personal statements, and the playing is first-rate, raucous, rocking and fun.

2 out of 5 stars Music for the masses.......2007-01-16

Stylized modern rockabilly. Bought this based on other reviews and was very disappointed. As heartless and overwrought as most Brian Setzer tunes. Less posture and more twang, please.

5 out of 5 stars A Rock-a-Billy Romp.......2006-05-19

This album is EXCELLENT. Rock-a-Billy and R&B in its purist form. This album could have easily been at home on Sun Records. Stand out songs are The Girl From Hell, a new arrangement and recording of the Stray Cats' classic Rock this Town and Texarkana to Panama City. Lee has put together a great band and a great record. And don't miss his live show, it is fantastic! The guys are super cool and super talented.

3 out of 5 stars DECENT OUTPUT FROM EX KITTY.......2006-04-03

The Stray Cats have continued on and off with some reunion tours, its members have pressed on. The most notable might be Brian Setzer and his, again, bloated big band albums. But while Setzer has been in the spotlight on occasion, Lee Rocker has really never strayed from what the Stray Cats were all about. If you need any more proof, just look at the back of this disc, where he is holding a standup bass over his knee and plucking the hell out of it. The latest release from Rocker is what you would come to expect from someone who only knows rock and rockabilly and how vivacious the genre can be when done right.

5 out of 5 stars Larry ROCKS!!!!.......2007-04-18

Before I was out of high school I had determined that religion just didn't work for me -- it just didn't make sense. So despite my attendance in catholic school I began proudly describing myself as an atheist. Even my friends in school who thought going to church or confession was kind of boring or "lame" didn't want to take the plunge and actually commit to something so concrete as atheism. However......since high school I have been a huge fan of rock & roll, and all the rebellion associated with it. So when a friend one day told me to check out Larry Norman despite the fact that he was a Christian rocker, I was all for it. And I am so glad I did. Larry's skill with lyrics is amazing. I went to catholic school for 12 yrs, I was schooled in the bible stories, so I knew what this guy was talking about....and man did he put it all into beautiful (and original) terms. "Why Don't You Look Into Jesus" is one of the grittiest, rockin-est songs I've ever heard. "I Am the Six O'Clock News" sounds slightly dated today (it even sounded dated in 1986 when I first heard it) but the power in Larry's writing is amazing. (Sure beats "Girls, Girls, Girls" by a long-shot) "The Outlaw" literally gives me goosebumps.

I liked Larry's music so much, that my friend and I saw Larry at Kutztown University (a little west of Allentown, PA). He played acoustically and it was great (although I would have prefered to see him plugged in with The Young Lions). This album definitely wears it's devotion to Christ on its sleeve, but who cares, it's just a great rock & roll album. Larry was committed to something -- which is a lot more than you can say for most people. If you're a fan of solid folky-rock songs, and are either devoted to Christ or are an atheist with an open mind, BUY THIS CD.

5 out of 5 stars Christian Rocker.......2007-01-12

Larry Norman's classic in Only Visiting This Planet is rated by CCM as the second Best Christian album of all time. Maybe it should have been ranked first from a lyricist's point of view. The lyrics are gritty and address the scoial issues raging in the early 70's. However, the message remains the same and is as applicable today as it was then. The liner is helpful in giving backgroud information on Norman himself and his journey of faith. This album is the rare find that exemplifies a Christ-like attitude set in today's modern culture without loosing the impetus of the Message. Great for introducing Christian music to your secular friends who are caught in the misperceptin of hymnody as the only Christian music out there.

5 out of 5 stars An Awesome Achievement.......2006-05-01

I accepted Christ as my Savior in 1969 (right before I entered high school), and within a year's time, I had been made aware of Larry Norman (via ads in The Hollywood Free Paper, a Christian counterculture paper published in Berkeley CA by Duane Pederson). I bought my first two Larry Norman LPs through a mail order form in that paper, and immediately fell in love with Larry's music. But it wasn't until "Only Visiting This Planet" was released that Larry's music really took flight. The album was amazing, in my opinion, not only because it showed that Christians could make really good rock 'n' roll (with considerably better production values than his first Christian rock albums had demonstrated), but also because it dramatically expanded the definition of what constituted Christian music in terms of subject matter and lyrics.

Who could have guessed that a song which talked explicitly about seedy and disreputable things such as drug addiction and venereal disease could glorify the Lord? In his song "Why Don't You Look Into Jesus?", Larry proved that there is no topic which can't be redeemed when one sees the world through the eyes of one who knows the Savior.

I heard Larry a couple of times at a Christian coffeehouse (the New Wine Coffeehouse) in my hometown of Springfield, MO, and I had the opportunity to sit down and speak with Larry when he visited my church, Evangel Temple Assembly of God. I was impressed with his unique sense of humor, his humility, and his love for the Lord.

If anyone ever decides to open a Christian Rock Hall of Fame (and they really should, since there was a lot of good music being made in those early days), there should be a lifesize statue of Larry planted firmly in front of the front doors. In his prime, Larry was more radical than most secular rockers ever dreamed of being, because he truly used his talents to make the world a better place.

5 out of 5 stars Among CCM's Most Influential Albums for Good Reason.......2005-08-26

Larry Norman's music is usually only available through his eponymously named website. As his albums are reissued as remastered CDs, it is good to see them more publicly available.

Norman didn't invent Christian music, but he helped define what it could be for the late 20th century. Long before Amy Grant, DC Talk, and Michael W. Smith was a long-haired guy wearing black talking about politics, Jesus and love. Churches weren't sure what to do with him, and the secular music world wasn't sure they didn't like him. His wasn't a hippie, or was he? Believers and atheists were conflicted, and Norman wound up forging a change in modern Christian music.

Norman was funny in his shows, with the kind of humor never heard at church camp, and with a message that left Christians unsettled. "Only Visiting This Planet" was one of the albums to showcase Norman's lyrical style and biblical insight, first being released in 1972.

His signature song, "I Wish We'd All Been Ready," would have been enough to make this a worthy album. Futuristically, he laments for those who did not accept the salvation of Christ prior to the Second Coming.

"Why Should The Devil Have All The Good Music" answers the scorn of the church, and the cynicism of the world.

"I Am The Six O'clock News" aims sharply at the sense of complacent distance we have while watching the news of international violence, using the currency of the Viet Nam war as his backdrop.

"Why Don't You Look Into Jesus" is directed at Janis Joplin, as Norman watched, as we all watched, the self-destruction of one of the greatest blues voices ever. Norman saw the problem and gave a suggestion. The song, with edgy lyrics, was banned from being played on many Christian radio stations.

"Gonorrhea on Valentine's Day,
And you're still looking for the perfect lay,
You think rock and roll will set you free,
You'll be dead before you're thirty-three,
Shooting junk till you're half insane,
Broken needle in your purple vein,
Why don't you look into Jesus, he's got the answer."

"The Outlaw" highlights the sometimes forgotten aspect of Christ's life, that in his three years prior to crucifixion, he lived as a rebellious, wanted man hanging out with the dregs of society. The clean-cut, anti-hippie suburban churches bristled, and sometimes, embraced Norman because of this challenging reminder.

"Some say He was an outlaw, that He roamed across the land
With a band of unschooled ruffians and a few old fishermen
No one knew just where He came from or exactly what He'd done
But they said it must be something bad that kept Him on the run."

I fully recommend "Only Visiting This Planet" by Larry Norman.

5 out of 5 stars Jesus is the Rock in this Classic Rock n Roll.......2005-07-12

No question about it -- this IS THE one Larry Norman album way above and beyond all others. If you like late 60s/early 70s rock, with biting yet humorous lyrics and impeccable instrumentation, you will love this album.

Norman's writing over the years generally has been pretty good, but this was definitely his most creative era. When that is combined with the arrangement and production assistance this effort received from the "fifth Beatle" (George Martin), you get an album that is pretty much pure joy to listen to from beginning to end. It has a couple of wonderful and witty odes to Dylan ("American Novel" and "Readers Digest"), San Francisco (Norman's roots) blues-rock ("Why Don't You Look into Jesus?"), a great Vietnam protest song, complete with exploding napalm effects ("Six O'Clock News"), and much much more. I think it is one of the finest albums to emerge from the early 70s, of any kind.

It is in many ways tragic (if that is not too strong a word) that Norman's writing never matched this again -- and that the arrangement and production values of his other albums tended to suffer overmuch from his own heavyhanded attempts to do it all. But not here, not on this album, originally released by MGM records. This is the real deal.

      Album Description

With musical muscle from his road-tested band (guitarists Brophy Dale and Buzz Campbell, and drummer Jimmy Sage) BLACK CAT BONE is an amazing collection of ten Rocker originals (with one co-written with guitarist Brophy Dale), one song by guitarist Buzz Campbell, and reinvented covers from Bob Dylan (One More Night) and Leon Payne (Lost Highway, made famous by Hank Williams). The CD's scorching rockabilly, roadhouse romps and straight-ahead, old-school rock `n' roll, create by far the strongest set of songs of Rocker's solo career.

Yes, maybe it's true that punks wouldn't be caught dead with flowers in their hair (What? NO DEAD FLOWERS??) , but, y'know what? Who cares! Dude, get a life! I'm sure the title's meant to be ironic. Go look up the word in the dictionary then you might have a clue. If this is your way of thinking, then it's obvious that Green Day and Offspring are what's considered punk. Jello Biafra, Willie Nelson and Noam Chomsky (all divergent people, but that's my point) could show you a thing or two hundred about the true meaning of Punk (Think of them as the Ghosts Of Punk Past or something...) .

As Jello sung back in the day: "Punk's not dead it just deserves to die when it becomes another stale cartoon..."

As far as Sandi Thom goes, man, the fact that she webcast her "3 wk long world tour" says it all. She did it her way. Not by going on Idol or resorting to the music world version of the casting couch. No. By playing her heart out. More power to her!

Just buy the CD to support such an admirable ethic that seems to be sorely lacking in today's musical climate.

      5 out of 5 stars And I thought I was the cynic.......2006-08-06

As the black hole of an impending thirty-eighth birthday exerts an ever-increasing doom upon me, I find myself being a bit indifferent towards most new musicians. Then, on National Public Radio of all places, a tiny tune arose, planting a seed on the barren wastelands of my soul. What is this? my cantankerous little voice grumped. Then moments passed, and I found myself bewitched. Who was that singing backup? My god. It was me. I was actually singing along with Sandi Thom's "I Wish I Was A Punk Rocker."

I guess I just happened to like the song's simple, nostalgic lyrics and instantly captivating tune. The complete lack of instruments was also intriguing. Momentarily, I had forgotten I was supposed to be the cynic. Oops.

Would I recommend that you run out and buy the song immediately? No. Music tastes are fickle. I would however recommend that you run out , run back in, and then begin scanning the airwaves for a listen. Then you can agree or disagree with my 5 star review.

As for the cynic composer's review below, I would surmise that he may well be composed of crabapples and vinegar. How would I know? I see the same composition in my mirror every morning. The difference is, that after this morning, I heard a song cool enough to turn vinegar into wine.

1 out of 5 stars she's not a punk rocker, an airhead maybe..........2006-07-12

someone needs to explain to this ignoramus that punk rockers didn't wear flowers in their hair, in fact they hated and were an extreme reaction to the whole hippie esthetic. this song is all about how great hings were in the old days, well in the old days people used to have a clue what they were writing songs about before they schmoozed themselves into a record deal, sounds like another ashley simpson here, the mystery is why it's getting played on respectable radio.
