Excellent CD. Doreen has a very soothing voice spoken in a relaxed manner. The soft music in the background enhances the relaxed mood without becoming a focus in itself. The script she uses is concise enough to provide adequate guidance yet open-ended enough to make listining to it a very personal experience which can be listened to again and again as if it were the first time.

I bought this cd along with several others. After awhile this has become my favorite. It's not the words or imagery, and this might sound wierd.
I tried it out recently on a higher quality system with expensive speakers. It may just be me, but it has the effect of percodan or loritab (pain medication).
Something about her voice, on the high end speakers multiplies the effect of relaxing me, even as I'm sitting up with eyes open. On my $100 stereo it's nothing special although still my favorite.

This CD is a strange mix of things -- from a guided imagery trip to a tale about a boy building a wall. Whatever. The bottom line is that it puts me to sleep almost every time. I can't remember the last time I heard the CD to the end. Maybe only twice out of 60 playings.

I can still have problems staying asleep (insomnia and mild sleep apnea) but that's another issue.

My wife has a bunch of Wendi Freisen CDs which absolutely do not work for me. Where Wendi's voice grates and annoys, Doreen's voice is, "like buttah".

Highly recommended.

I bought this for my husband to help with his relaxation and sleep. Not only does he love it, but I do to! I put it in my DVD player at night, set the tv for auto shut off and Doreen knocks me out! I've been sleeping so well myself since listening to her. She has a great voice for relaxation, and I've yet to hear the whole cd! I also gave this to my mom who has problems with sleeping and she dittos what I've said.

Great for beginners short on time!.......2007-03-29

I've wanted to practice meditation for years and have been taking steps here and there to make it a part of my life. I figure this activity will probably be similiar to my process of losing weight or quitting smoking (which took me several tries to do successfully). So a few years back, I bought the audio book of Pema Chodron's The Places that Scare You. I don't think I was ready for it. I'm sure it's great, but it seemed too long for my purposes and honestly, I couldn't follow it. I think when I am further along my path of meditation, I will be able to return to Chodron.

So I listened to Creating Calm and I think it's perfect for where I am right now. I'm a true beginner in meditation. I'm short on time, but I have time to do 15-minute meditation exercises. There isn't any music on it, which I appreciate. It's all very concrete and body focused. Rivka Simmons takes a compassionate and gentle approach. I never felt like I was "doing it wrong."

She provides specific directions; she asks you to draw your attention to what you're doing; to notice what it feels like to be in your body. This may be too simple or easy for some people, but for a beginner like me with only 15 minutes to spare, it works!

Not meditation, but not bad for tension.......2007-03-03

This is not truly a "meditation" cd. The author guides you thru tensing and relaxing the various muscles in the body, from head to toe. Personally, I do find it helpful; but someone with more meditation experience will probably not get too much from this. There is no music or "white noise", and occasional background sounds can be heard, as if the cd were recorded in different environments at different times. The one thing I found particularly annoying was the author's way of interrupting my concentration by saying "Where is the mind now?"; however she only does this during the "Mindfulness Meditations". I recommend skipping those two and go directly to "Progessive Muscle Relaxation" exercise and the "Body Scan" exercise.

Rivka Simmons' voice is very soothing and encouraging, but her "meditations" have been only so-so helpful in easing my "stress". Track 4, "Body Scan Relaxation" continues to leave me baffled. (*How* am I supposed to "breathe" from my feet?) Track 3, "Progressive Muscle Relaxation" has been more helpful.

i read the conflicting reviews of this CD and realized that different people want different things from a meditation CD. i chose this one. i personally find music distracting, so the fact that i can focus solely on a calm voice helps me get into that really relaxed place. i've also done plenty of meditation in yoga and writing classes where i was guided into a forest or cave or whatever... i really like that in these meditations i'm focusing on relaxing my mind and body without traveling all over. these are simple, straight-forward, short trips to a deeply relaxed place. works for me!!!

I train yoga teachers from around the world, and I use this CD as a tool to demonstrate how to present yoga nidra in a yoga class. I encourage the teachers to purchase the CD and then emulate Steve's pacing, tone of voice, and content. His voice is soothing and unpretentious, and you will feel as if he is right there with you. He's done a super job with this CD and I recommend it for anyone who wants to "relax deeply." Enjoy!

I love the voice that enables me to unwind quickly. I specially found the guidance provided in the cd to be useful in helping me get into and remain in the meditative state. The cd leaves me deeply relaxed each time I listen to it. I would recommend it for anyone who needs a tool to relieve stress from their daily lives.

I have three yoga nidra CD's and this is now my favorite. Steve's voice is extremely relaxing, the sequence is beautifully presented and the music adds just the right touch, but not too much. I lent it to my mother after the loss of my father and she said it saved her during the times when she could not relax. I am a mother and teacher and I use it whenever I can to recharge my batteries. I am thankful to have this CD!

An eclectic,savory charity album.......2007-07-12

When Starbucks/Hear Music first released this charity album to combat hunger,I looked forward to the previously unreleased "Cyber-raga" track from Madonna. "Groundwork" is an eclectic combination of live and remix tracks,bringing in artists as diverse as Madonna's brother in-law&rocker Joe Henry,the techno vegan Moby,and Senegalese superstar Youssou N'Dour.

The opening track,a remix of Emmylou Harris' "One Big Love" is rapturous and whimsical;it's uplifting and toe-tapping. David Gray's live acoustic "My oh my" is a moving plea to keep one's heart open. Bill Frisell's "Keep your eyes open" is an amazing acoustic track. Brad Mehldau plays a mesmerizing piano cover of Radiohead's "Paranoid Android." Moby's "Whispering Wind" is equally enchanting. Supported",remixed by bassnectar&featuring the vocals of Zap Mama's Marie Dualne,is a socially conscious tribal rave-up rap. It's no surprise Michael Franti has the charisma to draw people to mass yoga practice in San Francisco along with his Power to the Peaceful rally. Youssou N'Dour's "Birima" is electrifying. The live version of Sheryl Crow's "Everyday is a Winding Road" is a moving anthem to living in the moment. Chocolate Genius' "Love walks in" is a fitting finish,relaxed&calming,and deeply spiritual. And now,for Madonna's "Cyber-Raga." It's in the spirit of Indian bhangra,and her collaboration with Indian producer Talvin Singh. At the time,Madonna was into Hindu spirituality;she respects the source,and her song sounds very Eastern;it's not Western pop with occasional Bollywood samples.It was a good reason to get this album!

The contributions from Daniel Lanois,Tom Waits,Artis the Spoonman,Joe Henry and Joseph Arthur are forgettable filler. However,"Groundwork" serves a savory,diverse mix of music. It makes for pleasant listening,perfect with a cup of coffee.

Acme (from Bremen, Germany) were among the most influential Hardcore bands of the 1990's. Enigmatic in the extreme; extensive Google searching reveals little other than the scraps of information gleaned from these liner notes. Edison released this CD in 1996, but the recordings date back to 1993/1994, these nine tracks comprise the entirety of Acme's recorded career (one 7", three compilation tracks, one demo).

Presumably the band take their musical cues from early 90's Hardcore bands such as Rorschach, but this is occluded so thoroughly by a dense (funeral) fog of extreme metal, sludge and grind that their Hardcore influences are difficult to pinpoint. The result is that Acme successfully straddle their influences without ripping them off, and unlike some of their imitators, they don't resort to blast-beat extremity by excess.

The influence and importance of these recordings has become impossible to ignore in the wake of the metallic hardcore and 'screamo' explosions that followed. Converge, Orchid, Morser, Caliban, Shikari, Breach...the list is expansive and far transcends the infamous 'Bremen scene'. Do not let these names fool you though. The originators were the masters, and for people who like genuinely intense, dark, challenging, extreme music of any form - this record is impossible to fault.

Best compilation of his Warner Bros. recordings.......2000-07-22

This distillation of Rah's last 3 albums predated 32 Records' A STANDING EIGHT by 3 or 4 years, and is likely the best choice of that material, as Joel Dorn himself compiled a single disc of what he considered the best moments from those final recordings, bookended by previously-unreleased tracks that still can only be found on this disc. (Although I should note that "Thunder and Lightning Goodbye" merges Kirk's medley of "Sentimental Journey" and "Coming Home" - taken from the Vanguard side of RAHSAAN RAHSAAN - with the sounds of a rainstorm.)

The first several tracks find Rahsaan as strong as ever, particularly a ferocious live rendition of his signature "Serenade to a Cuckoo" and the dramatic "Theme for the Eulipions", one of his most unique recordings which combines spoken-word passages, atmospheric sounds, a vocal chorus, a female solo vocal, and the playing of the band, in a programmatic fashion.

As Dorn explains in his liner notes, it's easier to bemoan Rahsaan's post-stroke debilitation than it is to appreciate the truly "Herculean" comeback. These tracks again feature Kirk the composer, Kirk the multi-instrumentalist, Kirk the saxophone master, and Kirk the keeper of the flame of great Black American music, including Percy Heath (of the MJQ) in the band and recording yet another Ducal tune, "In a Mellow Tone". His use of the toy piano and return to a more basic blues expression speak of his loneliness and return to a core state, producing a music that's both playful and eerie.
