5 out of 5 stars The whole career of one of the greatest singers of all time.......2007-01-14

I could nor beleive my eyes when I saw the price of this recording. It covers the whole career of the greatest Wagner and Strauss singer in the last half of the 20th Century. I think the whole performance of Ariadne of Naxos allurs in the archives of the Swedish Broadcasting company - a release, please!
When the news arrived that La Nilsson hade died in her home, surrounded by family members and near friends, on Christmas Day 2005 (kidneys not functioning, and no more dialysis possible) - we at once underrstand her uniquiness - there was nobody there to take over the helm and shield....It is quite wonderful that this eextensive compilation was published just recently. It is a very worthy portrait of a blessed singer!

5 out of 5 stars Birgit Sings Like Sweetness.......2007-01-08

This is the first time I had heard Birgit Nilsson sing. The CD was great. However, I did have to blast the music because it is the original recording on the CD. Besides the quality it is worth purchasing if you want to hear one of the best. Her voice is clear and sweet, and welcoming to the ears.

5 out of 5 stars A Document In The Grand Career Of Birgit Nilsson (1918-2005).......2006-03-23

The great soprano from Sweden, Birgit Nilsson, once contemplated suicide when she met with dismal reviews in her first perfomrance as Agathe from Weber's Die Freitschutz, for she was inexperienced and fresh out of the farm she grew up in. She went on to become the greatest dramatic soprano of all time, and for me, she is an even more thrilling and masterful soprano than the overrated Maria Callas. Birgit Nilsson died of unknown causes in her hometown of Sweden on Christmas of '05 only months ago. Her huge, steely, bright, metallic voice was reportedly capable of breaking glass and stone. This album covers many years in her career. Her Ariadne is not well known and it's captured in a young voice (50's) and she is in phenomenal shape. The dramatic heft of the role is suited to her voice. Wagner was her specialty of course and here we have slices of her Elisabeth from Tannhauser. She also sang Venus. Isolde was another great role of hers (the one she debuted at the Met) and Brunhilde is of course her best role. Singing Strauss is no piece of cake but when we listen to her Salome and Elektra and Dryer's Wife from Die Frau we are hearing a woman who, despite age, is singing with strength and vigor. She gets into character each time and she sings beautifully. All fans of La Nilsson must get this one.

5 out of 5 stars Great.......2003-08-20

This is a very good CD for people who follow Birgit Nilsson's development. It contains live performances from 1949 (Ariadne auf Naxos - Nilsson sang Ariadne!!) to 1977 (Dyer's Wife in Die Frau Ohne Schatten). You can see her development from young to old over close to 30 years. For someone like me who have many of Birgit Nilsson's commercial recordings, this is a great CD too because it allows me to compare her 'live' performances with the studio recordings. It also enables me to see how her voice developed over the years. For instance, her voice grew in warm as she progressed in her career. By 1977, her voice had lost some ease - you can tell that she has to sing with more effort but her top register is still amazing, the gleam is still there even if it is more effortful to produce (when I say effortful I mean by young Birgit Nilsson standards - if you compare with other singers, she still sings effortlessly). Imagine - by 1977, she was 59 and she still puts singers singers half her age at 30 to shame. A very interesting CD in very mono sound. 5 stars for Nilsson's superb performances (her vocalism never fails to amaze me), for a fantastic variety of excerpts, for very mono sound, for the historical importance of this CD and for the incredible bargain price ... for 2 CDs.

If you are a 'historical' freak, buy this. If you are a Birgit Nilsson freak, buy this. If you are an opera freak, buy this. Even if you are not a freak, buy this!!

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Coates, Austral, Widdop, Melchior, Schorr, Easton.......2007-06-15

These "bleeding chunks" of Wagner's "Ring," recorded in London and Berlin between 1926 and 1932, are generally exciting and well-sung performances, but a lot of the British and German singers used were really just repiteurs of their time. The really golden voices belong to Florence Austral, young Melchior, Friedrich Schorr and Florence Easton, though Walter Widdop was much better Heldentenor than one usually finds today and certainly deserves honorable mention.

The most frustrating thing about this set, aside from its episodic nature, was the schizophrenic use of five different conductors, each of whom had an entirely different way of shaping and pacing the work. Of the two used most frequently, Albert Coates and Leo Blech, Coates was decidedly the greater conductor. Every single note of every single phrase he conducts on these records has life, drive, clarity of texture, proper weighty tone and an almost palpable excitement. Indeed, in my view Coates is the most underrated conductor who recorded in history, and deserves to be better known for ALL of his work.

The price is a little steep, but if you get the set, do yourself a favor, JUST listen to the Coates-conducted excerpts first, then go back and listen to the whole thing. You'll quickly see what I mean. My biggest frustration was that Coates was not chosen to conduct the final scene from "Siegfried" with Melchior and the greatly-underappreciated Florence Easton, who though she was not as good as Austral was certainly an outstanding singer. Mark Obert-Thorn has done a good job of transferring these old records. The original 78s had a LOT of hiss and "sandpaper" sound in them, since they were issued at a time when Victor and HMV were putting EMERY powder in the grooves to minimize needle wear. (Emery powder is the same kind of thing you file your nails with, so you can imagine how abrasive the sound is even on mint-condition discs!) In doing so, he has of necessity scraped a little of the overtones off as well, leaving a slightly "grainy" sound in soft wind and vocal passages, but that is a small price to pay for eliminating what used to be called "bacon frying" on the old records.

Recommended with the above reservations.

5 out of 5 stars The greatest Wagner singing - bar none.......2005-08-16

This is the Ring that John Culshaw had so much fun with in his book, Ring Resounding, about the making of the Solti Ring. And he had a point. Yes, there is barely a third of the tetralogy recorded here (more than `bleeding chunks' but far less than the whole). Yes, we dart between London and Berlin and occasionally Vienna seemingly at will. Yes conductors (who didn't seem to be thought of as very important in those days) can change within scenes. So, on occasion, can singers - Act 2 of Walkure, for instance, has 2 Wotans, 2 Brunnhildes, 2 Sieglindes and Wotan No.2 doubles as Hunding! BUT...

But here is some of the most glorious singing you will hear on any Ring recording. Ever.

These days it seems to be the 50's that are lauded as the Golden Age of Wagner Singing - Hotter, Varnay, Nilsson, Flagstad (still), Windgassen, Vickers et al. But Hotter, magisterial and charismatic god that he could be, was prone to being hooty and woolly and even a bit wobbly, especially on an asthmatic day. Nilsson's awe-inspiring steely brilliance could leave her sounding a little cold and impersonal. At the other extreme, Flagstad's richer tones could make her sound a little maternal for my taste (Brunnhilde may be Siegfried's aunt, but she's not his mother!). Varnay was blisteringly committed in everything she did, but the voice as a voice? No cigar. Windgassen's Siegfried lacked the last ounce or two of vocal heft and he was apt to husband his resources a bit too much, especially in his eponymous opera. And so on.

But go back a generation further and wow! It's in a different class.

Let's start with Friedrich Schorr since he's the first of these greats to appear on these discs. In Wotan's `Abendlich strahlt' from Rheingold he is simply magnificent. This is a baritone bass-baritone as opposed to Hotter's bass bass-baritone (think Norman Bailey vs. John Tomlinson for modern local equivalents - on second thoughts, don't: it's not fair on two excellent Wotans!). Schorr's voice in 1927 was in prime nick (it got a bit strained at the top a decade or so later); focused, controlled, ample and with what I can only describe as a beat to it rather than any suggestion of wobble that gave it colour and character. Then there is the intelligence he brought to the character and the text. This is fully illustrated by taking practically any part of his role from Walkure - from the father issuing orders to his daughter through the crushed husband, the blind frustration of `heilige Schmach', the towering anger of Act 3 right through to what must be the definitive performance of the Farewell - certainly the one I always hear in my mind's ear. The Wanderer in Siegfried is no less wonderfully sung and the character has grown in maturity and resignation as well as gaining a sense of humour in his scenes with Mime and Alberich.

Frida Leider's Brunnhilde strikes a perfect balance between the steeliness of a Nilsson and the mumsiness of a Flagstad. John Steane described her voice as "existing at that rarely achieved point where the heroic has not become inhuman and where the human does not undermine tragic dignity". Precisely. This is amply demonstrated in bar after bar of Walkure from the teenage whoops of her war cry through the inwardness and growing confidence of her plea to her father to the crowning heroic glory of her grand idea for a fire-girt rock and a hero to brave it, singing with reckless abandon and thrilling security at the same time. Sadly she is not with us for Siegfried or Gotterdammerung, though we get her earlier set of the last (butchered) scene of Siegfried with Rudolf Laubenthal as a consolation. I wish there had been room for her nonpareil of an Immolation, even though it wasn't part of the original set.

The last of this triumvirate of unmatchable Wagner singers was, of course, Lauritz Melchior as Siegfried. His voice is simply a phenomenon - tireless, with a distinctive ring throughout its range, towering when loud (forging the sword), capable of real beauty and poetry when soft (the Forest Murmurs) and not as prone to rhythmical sloppiness as he's often made out to be. We have not heard his like before or since and probably never will.

The rest of the cast are no slouches either. Walter Widdop as Siegmund can hold his head high in this esteemed company; Gota Ljunberg is a wonderful Sieglinde, young, sexy, alive to the rising passion of Act 1, the hysteria of Act 2 and the glorious outburst of maternalism in Act 3 alike. I have to say, I've never quite got it with most people's favourite Sieglinde, Lotte Lehmann (the Fidelio Leonora, yes, that's a different matter), so for me Ljungberg is probably the best of them all. Florence Austral is the Brunnhilde of Gotterdammerung - at her best in a Dawn Duet with Widdop as Siegfried, egged on by urgent conducting from Albert Coates (far and away the most exciting conductor on these discs). Her Immolation is excellent, if not enough to erase memories of Leider. Ivar Andresen is the blackest of Hagens (enough to make Frick sound cuddly!), Emmi Leisner an implacable Fricka and Maartje Offers a Waltraute who really draws you in to her narrative.

It was122 sides on its original issue and in sound that is really staggeringly good (as it comes up on these Pearl discs produced by the ever reliable Mark Obert-Thorn), considering it was recorded just a few years after the introduction of electric recording.

If you love Wagner singing of the absolutely highest standards and already have your favourite modern-sound version sorted, don't hesitate: treat yourself to the many, many unmatched performances on these discs, all for less than the price of a pretty dodgy seat at the opera house.

5 out of 5 stars An abolute must.......2005-03-08

This magnificent compilation of the greatest Wagner singers and conductors of the 20s and early 30s is an absolute MUST for everyone who is remotely interrested in how Wagner was done in the past.
The greatest attractions are the magnificent interpretations of Friedrich Schorr, Frida Leider and the young Lauritz Melchior. Schorr sings Wotan in the excerpts from Die Walkure and Leider sings Brunnhilde. Melchior sings the young Siegfried. There is so much to treasure in this set. The English tenor Walter Widdop sings Siegmund and Swedish soprano Gota Ljungberg sings Sieglinde. The Walkure and Siegfried excerpts are quite consistant in the casting. Mime is sung by different tenors in Siegfried and although Wanderer is sung by Schorr in acts 1 and 2, the role is sung by two others Emil Schippers and Rudolf Bockelmann in act 3. None of them are as noble or as magnifient sounding as Schorr. Florence Easton sings Brunnhilde with Melchior in the duet at the end of the opera.
Gotterdammerung, though, is much less consistantly cast, the only consistant casting being Florence Austral as Brunnhilde. The excerpts are much more spread and more brief than on Siegfried, which had almost all of Siegfried's scenes intact. Siegfried is sung by Walter Widdop in the prologue and acts 1 and 2 and Horst Laubenthal in act 3. These two are not as great as Melchior (who is?), but is still quite excellent. Hagen is done by Arthur Fear, Ivar Andresen, Emanuel List. Andresen sings Hagen's watch (Hier sitz ich zur Wacht) and the calling of the Vassals (Hoiho! Hoihohoho!). He is the most chilling and exciting Hagen I have ever heard. His rendition, especially the calling of the vassals, is really dominating and every time I hear it gives me shivers. No other Hagen is quite as compelling is evil sounding without overdoing it. He is, for me, the main attraction of the Gotterdammerung part of the set.
The set also includes small excerpts of Rheingold with Schorr's rendition of the entry of the Gods to Vallhalla as the main attraction. And in addition to this there is an extra recording of parts of the Siegfried with Laubenthal and Leider. This scene is a little differently done than with Melchior and Easton, but both are great.
I have not said anything about the magnificent conductors here. Main parts of act 1 of Walkure is done by the great Albert Coates and somewhat less successfully by Lawrence Collingwood. Coates and Leo Blech dominates the rest of the Ring excerpts with scenes done by John Barbirolli, Robert Heger and Carl Alwin. But the most exciting conducting of all is done by the magnificent Karl Muck in Siegfried's Rhine Journey and Funeral March. The Rhine Journey is done with so much youngfullness and describes the young hero's journey magnificently. The Funeral March is done very solemnly and very much as a tribute to the great fallen hero.

So I would highly recommend this to all who is remotely interested in historical recordings or would want to know how Wagner was done is the past. The sound is really exceptional for its time and it is as good as any release from Pearl who is highly regarded as one of the best labels who releases historical recordings.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Second "Ring".......2003-02-27

After coming to know, love and perhaps becoming obsessed with the Ring through one of the modern stereo versions (e.g., Solti), you may want to hear another version. In my view, this classic version is the single best second Ring to get. It represents the fruit of a tremendous pre-War undertaking featuring many of the finest Wagnerian singers and musicians of the era giving performances that are astounding. Seventy-plus years later, the voice of Lauritz Melchior (for example) does not cease to amaze.

The sound is just fine for its era. Pearl has done an excellent job remastering and joining the sides (remember, these were 78s). I can't recommend this set highly enough.

5 out of 5 stars Frida/Lauritz.......2007-06-24

Well, this IS one of the great recordings, of the Wagnerian (recorded) past. Leider is exceptional, and Melchior is even-MORE so. The excerpts (with Sir Thomas Beecham) show what the best (vocal/orchestral) could do with the best inspirations of the Wagnerian language, and Leider & Melchior are, simply UNsurpassed .. in any attempt .. past, present or (maybe) future. This is ONE of the examples of the "old days" of recordings, that IS indispensable. IMHO.

Amazon.com essential recording

These excerpts from 1937 performances at Covent Garden have long been available in one form or another, but never in such impactful sound. No, it's not stereo and it still sports odd balances and thin string sound. But the voices come through clearly and it doesn't take much mental adjustment to become absorbed by performances of overwhelming power and intensity. The Flagstad-Melchior combination was untouchable in Wagner, and Furtwängler was perhaps the greatest of all Wagner conductors. All are captured here in their prime, galvanized by a live audience to deliver singing and conducting of unsurpassable beauty and understanding. No Wagnerian or lover of great singing can afford to miss this. --Dan Davis

4 out of 5 stars Masterful.......2003-09-01

This is a selection from a 1937 performance of the Ring. Furtwngler is my all time favorite conductor of Wagner and he lives up to his reputation. The singing is also excellent, only marred by old recording equipment that does not adequately capture the wonderful performance. Any Wagner lover will enjoy these CDs, despite the less than good reproduction of the 1937 sound (which is why I gave it only 4 stars).
Since writing this review a couple years ago, I must say that this is a CD that I listen to repeatedly. It has become one of my favorites in my Wagner collection.

5 out of 5 stars Flagstad's Brunnhilde at her best.......2002-02-28

You have never heard a more exciting performance of neither the third act of Walkure or of Gotterdammerung. I only wish there was a complete recording of those glorious days of Wagner music. Flagstad's Brunnhilde has always been the grandest in opera history, and these performances are no exception. Her tonal splendour, her power and magnetism has never been more evident on record than here. Her seasons in London in the 30's was probably even finer than those at the Met. Her partners there seemed to bring out the best in her. Furtwangler, Beecham, Reiner, Melchior, Janssen, Bockelmann. This with her stunning performance of Tristan und Isolde the same year with Beecham must be considered some of the very best singing she has done. The nobel performance of her Walkure's Brunnhilde, the emotional rollercoaster ride of Brunnhilde of Gotterdammerung is so expertly acted out in Flagstad's singing. Flagstad's magnificent performance somewhat overshadows her great partners. Rudolf Bockelmann's Wotan is nothing short of brilliant, along with Melchior's heroic Siegfried, Kerstin Thorborg's desperate Waltraute and Ludwig Weber's great evil Hagen. This is a performance to treasure for all Wagner fans who look for the greatest Wagner singing of the century. I would recommend this along with the excerpts of Frida Leider's Gotterdammerung performance the previous year with Beecham, Melchior, Thorborg and Janssen released by Preiser.

5 out of 5 stars Flagstad and Furtwaengler in the Ring.......1998-11-10

This is a stunning album. The sound is pretty good--for 1930s sound midway between the celebrated Beecham/Reiner Tristan and the Lehmann/Melchior/Walter Act I of Die Walkuere (which is as good as imaginable for that era). The singing, especially by Flagstad, is off-the-scale wonderful. One could claim that this is her very best Immolation Scene, and her great melodic line about 30 minutes before the end of Die Walkuere is spine-tingling. Bockelmann's Wotan is as good as the best, and Melchior is inimitably himself. The conducting is perhaps more tightly organized than in Furtwaengler's later versions. Beautiful little details in the orchestra pop out, even with the fair-to-middling sound.

If you are just starting out to explore Wagner's Ring, this is probably not the album to start with. Get one of the super recordings (either of the whole thing or separate operas), such as Solti or Karajan. Those provide a text. Then get the Bruno Walter Walkuere Act I--it's the best example of Wagner's ability to write a tightly knit hour of music and of theater--no wasted motion or notes--and there is no performance like that one. Then begin to explore marvellous byways such as the present album.

4 out of 5 stars The best "Trotto" I've ever heard........2003-06-17

The arrangement of "Trotto" is worth the price of the entire CD. "Trotto" is a
very popular piece in early music, but no one has ever done it with such drama
and power. Over all, the material is less varied and to me a little less interesting than their other album "A Rose of Swych Virtu", but this is still some
of the best early music recorded.

4 out of 5 stars Quality early music experience.......1999-10-04

I have attended many Musica Antigua de Albuquerque concerts. This CD captures the flavor of their live performances. The singing is strong, the instruments sound great, and there is a good balance between instrumental and vocal performances. The liner notes, just like their concert programs, are chock-full of useful information and translated lyrics. This and their previous CD: A Rose of Such Virtue, are excellent samplers of early music.

5 out of 5 stars A very fun CD.......1999-12-27

'Hurray For Everything' is an excellent antidote to those self-important melodramatic rock stars who think they know it all. Cats and Jammers does not know it all. In fact, they may not know anything, except how to put out a really catchy, humorous, fun-filled indie rock CD.

5 out of 5 stars Glittering Sucess.......1999-11-08

My good friend dragged me to their show when they were in Arkansas recently. . .and I haven't been able to get their songs out of my head since. Their live show is awesome, and I can't wait to see them again. Cats are pure entertainment!

5 out of 5 stars Cats&Jammers Rock.......1999-10-24

the best cd of the year, hands down.

5 out of 5 stars Super Duper.......1999-10-19

I'm from chicago, as is cats and jammers and its curious that no chicago rockers have posted anything about this group. I've seen them a handful of times and have their current release "hurray for everything." The CD is a real pop gem without a doubt, however their live show is a true stick-to-your-ribs rock fest! As a (typically) jaded Chicago audience member, I've got to admit that I rarely leave a club with a band's song stuck in my ear. Not so with C&J. I consistantly arrive back home with at least a few ditties swarming away in my head. "Hurray for Everything" is pure fun and the show is sweaty, sexy fun so get off yer ass and check out Cats & Jammers!

If you want to return to the gooooood Old Rock and Roll..This is it. Do not pass this one by.. To take a quote from the project coordinator on this alblum ( Pat Barrett).. "Some might call it rhythm and blues, but when rhythm was first put to the blues it made the first rock and roll, and that is what's on this record"
Just take a listen to the sample Club Savoy and you will be hooked..There are 14 songs on this great alblum, and not a reject in the group..If you like Hank Ballard, Joe Turner, Delbert McClinton, etc. , this is the one to get.Just sorry that I can't find more music on Rockin Louie. What a shame. I love old time rock and roll, and I mean rock and roll. Not the junk they call rock and roll now days..Also love the blues and Carolina Beach music...This is a combination of them all..One word describes this Alblum "EXCELLENT".......

4 out of 5 stars A Gem Of An Album.......2000-05-19

This CD dates back to the 1980's, but its roots are far deeper than that. Here the Welsh rock 'n' roll legend trawls through the jumpin' jive back catalogue to produce a swinging, powerful album. It leaves his former co-star, Shakin' Stevens standing, as Louie blasts through a rockin' good repertoire of hits from the likes of Bulmoose Jackson and Wyonie Harris . Rockin' Louie offers us a perfect pastiche and his "recreated" sound leaves us hankering for more. Its a shame that Charley Records (the original label) didn't persuade Louie to follow through on this stunning album.

5 out of 5 stars Spirit of Greatness!.......2005-09-01

I am rather surprised that this Ring set is one of the least popular of the historical, live, recordings for it is simply sublime. And...I mean that in the true sense of the word. Moralt brings a haunting spirituality and intensity of motion. Never did "Heil dir Sonne, Heil dir licht" have more freshness, life and hope. A goddess on the journey to womanhood. I get goosebumps thinking about it.

I will not compare too much but while Treptow, who was reviving his career is not the best artist, he seems more than reliable and what a beautiful almost Italianate ringing, virile voice he has. This is not a hollow sound at all. The weakest link here, to me, is the Walkure, where I do not sense from the singing of Sieglinde that touching exhaustion that makes her character so special. For though Konetzni was THE Sieglinde of the time, with a georgeous tone, she lacks the "Wagnerian Thrust." Crespin made you feel that Sieglinde had come a long, perilous road, this in spite of the beauty of her tone. I believed she accomplished this by her more vigorous use of the chest quality and declamation. Yet, it is CLEAR that Konetzni was her model.

Finally, Grob-Prandl was the greatest dramatic soprano ever. Never have I heard on recordings or otherwise a more arrestingly powerful and beautiful hochdramatiche sopran! How youthfully naive and moving is her "lang war mein schlaf" after she awakens on the rock surrounded by flames. Moralt captured that aspect well, the surprise of awakening, the confusion of the new life, the grayness of the rock, and the unique burning glow of old flames. Hello Sun! Hello light!

A precious document!

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Ring cycle.......2004-01-15

Rudolf Moralt's 1948 Ring cycle from Vienna is a true find. First appearing on the Myto label (still available), and now on Gebhardt, Wagnerians will want this, if only because it offers a wonderful opportunity to hear the largely-unknown and underappreciated Gertrude Grob-Prandl (Brunnhilde in the Siegfried and Gotterdammerung). She is phenomenal--something of a cross between the tremendous power of a Nilsson and the melting beauty of a Flagstad. Others stand out as well, including Ferdinand Frantz' Wotan/Wanderer.

In short, a Ring cycle worth acquiring, not as a first choice, perhaps, but, at such cheap prices, necessary nonetheless.

4 out of 5 stars Fascinating Historical Document... but a First Choice?.......2003-07-22

I really enjoyed listening to this Ring Cycle. It's one of the earliest extant Ring recordings (Naxos has put out a so-called "cycle" from the 1930s and 1940s which is actually four separate performances over a period of years packaged together, and really isn't a true cycle), and given that it dates from 1948-9, the sound is pretty good.

It was recorded much the way Furtwangler recorded his Ring Cycle for RAI a few years later (you can check on Amazon.com to see my review of that recording). He performed "Das Rheingold," which doesn't have an intermission, complete, and the other three operas one act at a time. This means that the singers are a lot fresher than they would be if they were doing a complete performances in a theater. When it comes to the end of "Gotterdammerung," when the soprano can sound exhausted, this can be a real asset.

I liked the conductor's way with the score, and the cast, although not the big names you get on other recordings, are really terrific.

But should it be your first choice? That depends. Offhand I would say no -- almost everyone's first choice for a Ring Cycle would be Georg Solti's, and for once the conventional wisdom is correct. Second would be Karl Bohm on Philips, especially if you can find the slimmer edition that doesn't have jewel cases and costs ...less than the bulkier model.

So this recording of "Der Ring des Nibelungen" is really for the Wagner completists or the ones who have a love for historical recordings. Like me. But if you already own a bunch of Ring Cycles, you've got some money to throw around, and historical mono sound doesn't put you off, you could do a lot worse than buy this set. It's arguably the equal of any of the more famous live recordings from that era by bigger-name conductors such as Furtwangler and Knappertsbusch.

5 out of 5 stars Furtwaengler and Flagstad at La Scala.......2004-01-19

This is a live recording of Wilhelm Furtwaengler conducting at La Scala in the early 1950s. The house band is not up to the standards of Bayreuth or Berlin but serves well enough.

With one exception, the cast is serviceable -- and probably better than anything likely to be assembled today. The Siegfried, Max Lorenz, is adequate (no small praise) but not especially memorable. The exception, of course, is the great Kirsten Flagstad, who here sings wonderfully well.

The sound of the 1950s live mono recording is is about what you might expect. If mere reproduction is the most important thing for you, go elsewhere. If a brilliant conductor and a unique artist in one of her signature roles interests you, give this a try.

Furtwaengler and Flagstad = five stars.

2 out of 5 stars This "Götterdämmerung" is a mess........2001-02-10

I came to this recording with certain expectations, and none of them were met. (1) SOUND QUALITY: Given that this is an Opera D'Oro release of a live performance, I expected the sound quality to be less than optimal. (Some of their recordings are OK sound-wise, such as their "Don Carlo" from the Vienna State Opera.) But the sound here is mediocre at best, and in some places (like the first several seconds of the prelude), it is just plain awful. The sound quality of the 1951 Bayreuth "Parsifal" is better than this. I think I heard the prompter a few times, but I'm not sure. Plus the audience noise can be quite distracting at times; at least a couple of people in attendance had really nasty coughs. (2) SINGING: I love Ludwig Weber's Gurnemanz on the aforementioned "Parsifal," but I'm not sure he has the kind of bite necessary for Hagen. I had never heard Max Lorenz before, but his Siegfried is lazy and sloppy. Alois Pernerstorfer makes an interesting Alberich; he sounds more like a lyric baritone than the kind of sinister voice one would expect in this role, like Hermann Uhde or Ekkehard Wlaschiha. (3) ORCHESTRAL PLAYING: The playing is pretty sloppy, too, and this is not just a function of the sound quality. In La Scala's defense, the Bayreuth orchestra a year later didn't sound any better. (4) CONDUCTING: I don't quite get the fuss about Furtwängler being the greatest Wagner conductor ever. There's certainly no evidence of that in this recording. (Furtwängler fans, don't flame me. I'm not interested.) BOTTOM LINE: If you're only going to get one recording of this opera, spend three times as much and get the Levine, Karajan, Barenboim, or Solti. This is for historical interest only.

5 out of 5 stars A GREAT SINGER-Underapprciated.......2006-07-13

The reviewer from Australia is quite right. Ms. Austral had a large warm voice with a great top register and wonderful musicality in music from Mozart through Verdi to Wagner and songs. Her High C at the end of the Gotterdamerung is defiantly easy, some other great Wgnerian sopranos either avoid the note or have a rough time with it. It is though she opens her mouth and the note appears- no slipping and sliding to it.

No better version of the Oberon aria has passed my ears. The Inflammtus will give you goose bumps. The songs are sung with great sensitivity and line.

ANOTHER GREAT AUSSIE SINGER

5 out of 5 stars "One of the wonder voices of the World" (Nellie Melba).......2003-06-05

Melba recognised the greatness of Australia's prima dramatic soprano of the 1920's and 1930's whose career was cut short by MS. Sutherland also was inspired by Austral before she became a singer. She has been denied the fame she should have had, as proven by her recordings. She was more than favourably compared with Frida Leider, with whom she shared Brunnhilde on the first complete recording of The Ring, and Kirsten Flagstad.

Listen to her "Ocean thou mighty monster" with its great plunge downwards which other sopranos fudge. The Inflammatus has a driving energy and high notes which make your hair stand on end. Austral also sang less dramatic music, with fine legato.

A soprano who should have been an international star.
