New York club regular David Knapp has tested his stylus on the hardest bodies of the Manhattan-Miami party axis, and his contribution to the Global Groove series finds ever-inventive new places to put the beat. The buzzword of this installment is "Dignity," and Knapp certainly encourages club slaves to lose any of that they may have, presenting faded disco glory in a modern cyborg-slut perspective. Tracks by Michelle Weeks and Brutal Bill come on the heels of glitzy handbag house but sound not as isolated or psychic as deep house. Knapp metes out both the brash and the smooth in a unified seductive twist, keeps up the momentum without becoming monotonous, and overall directs this into a surprisingly worthy follow-up to endless pride week-themed compilations on this upstart label. --Ian Christe

4 out of 5 stars takes some time, but Knapp gets it into gear.......2005-06-07

This is virtually a greatest hits of diva anthems. Things start with the hex hector's funky mix of Veronica covering Evelyn Champagne King (I prefer the Johnny Vicious mix, which is harder). Then we get another disco/funk influenced vocal track-I have to skip over this one. BORING. Rise follows the same pattern. Then we get the same from Believe by Jocelyn Brown-when there's an incredible hardhouse mix by Junior Vasquez out there. Then suddenly, things jar into overdrive with the hard mix of Michelle Weeks. FINALLY. Spirit of a Man is a pretty if not melancholy trance track. The highlight for me is a Dawn Tallman track I was unfamiliar with, and it's a hot diva anthem. Unfortunately, it's only 5 minutes. Reina can pretty much do no wrong, and this is her pounding take on the classic club track "Got a Love For You." Thunderpuss and Loleatta give us the insane Share My Joy, which could easily exhaust you on the dancefloor, and it wraps up with the intense mix of Learn 2 Luv by Kim English in long form. Things start of boring, but by track 5, we get a pretty good mix of peak hour diva anthems. Nice to see most of the tracks running in their long lengths:

1. I'm in Love (6:59)
2. Do You Know About Love (7:26)
3. Rise (5:41)
4. Believe (7:10)
5. Rejoice (7:24)
6. Spirit of Man (7:11)
7. Together in the Spirit (5:16)
8. Got a Love for You (8:42)
9. Share My Joy (7:59)
10. Learn 2 luv (10:08)

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best in the Global Groove Series.......2000-11-20

Remixed by DJ David Knapp, "Global Groove: Dignity" happens to be one of the best in the Centaur music series. Knapp, a former Miami Beach deejay transplanted to New York is one of the best deejays I've heard in years. Although most of the later half of the CD gets a bit out of the groove for me, the first half is great beginning with Knapp's remix of "I'm in Love," by club diva Veronica. Originally a song by Evelyn "Champagne" King, Veronica's vocals do justice to King's original version.

"Do You Know About Love" by Brutal Bill presents Soul Function, is a soulful, yet upbeat track that will send you into a trance due to Soul Function's smooth vocals. "Rise," by Soul Providers featuring Michelle Shellers is also on of the best tracks in the compilation, as it sounds like an anthem that would be played at a club in Ibiza or Sydney.

I was disappointed by the remake of the Jomanda classic "I Got A Love For You," performed by Heaven featuring Reina. Steve Hurley's original remix of this classic club song still remains one of the best remixes of the early 1990's, and I seriously miss Jomanda's vocals.

Overall, "Global Groove: Dignity" is one of the best in the ever-popular "Global Groove" series. Besides the cute cover boy, this album will transport you to another world where horrific sampling (Can we say Puff Daddy?) will not destroy a song's impact on an audience. It's great music for a great price.

4 out of 5 stars Pouring Down with Spirit.......2000-07-08

A mixed bag of 10 self-loving and gospel-infused dance songs. Lots of growling and wailing from Michelle Weeks ("Rejoice"), Loleatta Holloway ("Share My Joy"), and Jocelyn Brown ("Believe") as they invite you to to some serious hand-clappin', foot-stompin' fun that is, at times, straight outta church.

Best: "Rise" (by Soul Providers) features singer Michelle Shellers' beautiful, comforting voice and words -- it's something you can really relate to if you're down in the dumps. "Spirit of Man" (by 12-Tone) is just totally pretty and hopeful and will take you on a trancey flight.

Not so good: "Together in the Spirit" (by Gerideau / Dawn Tallman) is a half-baked duet where the singers try to hit every possible note in their ranges -- it's just come off as silly and uninspired.

Remakes: "I'm in Love" (by Veronica) is an unexpectedly downbeat Hex Hector mix of Evelyn Champagne King's song -- it's very Jellybean. "Got a Love for You" (by Heaven featuring Reina) is a slightly more plucky version of Jomanda's classic dance hit. And "Learn to Love Yourself" (by Kim English) is a re-release of her nice R&B song that's been hidden inside the rat-a-ta-tat of a modern Circuit beat.
