Product Description
Among British female vocalists, Lisa Stansfield has stood supreme for almost 15 years. You might call her the UK's leading soul diva. Certainly, she's as soulful as they come with a breathtaking voice & a remarkable range. Yet 'diva' doesn't seem quite right. The primadonna connotations of the word don't really fit the down-to-earth honesty & lack of pretension that characterize the girl from Rochdale, Lancashire who has gone on to sell 13 million albums world-wide. Her songs have become part of the soundtrack of our lives & have won her countless awards, including 3 BRITs, 2 Ivor Novellos & a Grammy nomination. But it's perhaps only when you listen to them collected together, 17 in fact, on her first Greatest Hits collection entitled 'Biography' that you realize just how deeply her music has penetrated our consciousness. This limited edition version includes a bonus disc of 6 of the most popular dance

Simultaneously challenging and accessible, The Unauthorized Biography of Reinhold Messner is a song cycle about death and dying, people, relationships, optimism, innocence--you name it. On his first two albums, Ben Folds was quick to toss off bombs of blame (most notably on the vitriolic "Song for the Dumped"), but here he aims most of his criticism at the mirror. On the wondrously snarky "Redneck Past" he sings, "My ex-wives all despise me / try to put it all behind me / but my redneck past is nipping at my heels." Apparently he doesn't have a chip on his piano any more. The production is lush and ornate, with strings and horns embellishing Folds's usual quota of to-die-for hooks (which he seems to dash off as effortlessly as postcards from the beach). An obvious point of reference is Pet Sounds, but Ben Folds Five widen their scope to also include hints of Steely Dan, Pink Floyd, and even Queen, whose influence is front and center on the bombastic opener "Narcolepsy," a virtual homage to "Bohemian Rhapsody." Other highlights include "Army," a hilariously detailed indie-rock answer to Billy Joel's "Scenes from an Italian Restaurant." --David Menconi

4 out of 5 stars Ben Folds Five - A Slight Step Down But Still Good.......2007-03-22

Ben Folds Five delivers again with another collection of outstanding piano based songs. I have seen different interpretations of the "concept" behind this album and I am still not sure that I see exactly what it is supposed to be. Is the main character Ben himself or just someone made up in his mind? The songs are mostly introspective and deal with regret, loss and life choices. Although there are a few upbeat moments most of this album explores self examination through review of ones actions. Overall I don't think that this album is nearly as strong as "Whatever Amen", but it has its moments. "Narcolepsy", "Don't Change Your Plans", "Mess", "Army", "Your Redneck Past" are all very good and resonate with what is best about this band. Tight concise piano fronted music and intelligent lyrics. "Mesner" would end up being the last album from the original Ben Folds Five band. The members would go their separate ways after this one with Folds going solo.

5 out of 5 stars Largely Misunderstood.......2007-01-26

After reading other customer reviews, it seems that many were confused by what Ben Folds Five was doing with this album. "Reinhold Messner" covers a lifespan in reverse, starting with death and then moving backwards through time. "Narcolepsy" portrays having to face the inevitability of death, even when not ready ("I'm going to sleep...but i'm not tired"). "Magic" presents loved ones coping and coming to terms with an impending death ("we knew you'd be leaving as soon as you could, and we hoped you would"). "Hospital Song" is about the first time you face your own mortality, and the denial that often results from it.

This album is nearly a masterpiece in my opinion, and one of the better "concept" albums to come along in quite some time. BFF refused to release a carbon copy of "Whatever and Ever, Amen" and instead chose to take their formula and improve upon it. Definitely 5 starts in my book.

4 out of 5 stars Haunting..........2006-08-10

This was hardly the album most BFF fans expected upon its release in 1999, myself included. Looking back, it wasn't the radical departure most fans claimed it was. Ben's tender side had always popped up here and there on his previous albums. It just came through most prominently on this one. This a seemless collection of haunting lyrics and gorgeous melodies that begs to be played from start to finish.

BFF called it quits shortly after they released this. I saw one of their last shows at the University of Vermont's Patrick Gym in April of 2000 and it remains one of the very best concerts I've ever seen. They should have released a full live album.

5 out of 5 stars His best.......2006-04-03

Unlike his last record this was recorded in a studio so it sounds more professional. But I love the other one too.

1 out of 5 stars Don't Bother.......2006-02-04

I love Ben's work... .except for this. It is easily my least favorite of all of his albums. Why?? Gees... where do I start. Suffice to say that the album is depressing and generally difficult to listen to. In my opinion, Ben is best when he "kicks it up a notch". This needs to be kicked... about 3 notches. I bought it on the strength of "Army" and my love for their previous works. I guess I should have did a little more research.

5 out of 5 stars Hooked on "Affection" and now this?.......2006-01-31

This is, by far, one of the best Compilation CDs I've heard in a long time. Lisa Stansfield has amazed me with her talent, ever since the release of "Affection" back in '90. I went shopping recently in the music store and came across "Biography" as a surprise. Having been unaware of its release, I decided to "put it in the bank" with my other upcoming purchases. 2 days later, I bought it on amazon and I don't regret it one bit. My copy is a promo, but it's got the same booklet and images as the publicly released edition.

I really like the photos of Lisa, although most of them are small thumbnails, except for 2 larger ones. Her face is beautiful and she's changed quite a bit in the past 15 years. My, has it really been that long? There are some nice little tidbits about Lisa's songs, inside the booklet. What you won't find are the lyrics, though. The interior of the booklet is white and well-designed. Simple and straight-forward and not distracting to the eye. Additionally, the disc itself is white. The recording appears to have been remastered, which makes listening all the better. Arista is a great Label. Most of the tracks are new to me...as I've only bought the "Affection" CD since discovering Lisa Stansfield. Considering "Someday (I'm coming back)" was on the "The Bodyguard" soundtrack...it's nice to find it here. It's the logical thing to do when your song is among a bunch of other material on another CD.

In the early 90s STANSFIELD was extremely popular with hits like someday , All Around The World ,In All The Right Places and so many other popular songs but by the mid 90s she seemed to fade away from the international scene infact i bought rhe bodyguard soundtrack exspecially for her songs which i feel made the soundtrack the best with a little bit of luck i feel STANSFIELD could ve been in celiene dions place today STANSFIELD had the best voice ever i feel and about this album it contains almost all her hits including someday my favorite so i m going right ahead to order this compilation right now

5 out of 5 stars LISA STANSFIELD RECOUNT.......2004-11-27

Lisa Stansfield career cannot be sum in just one cd, this woman holds such talent that hurts. Her 1997 self titled release was and is one of the most classy and soulful ever to be release. So I'm sad that this collection not feature all the singles released from that album, specially "I'm Leavin'". Although for a casual fan and a pop collector this Biography will do good and it is a place to listen to her most mainstream hits and some fans favorites. Five Stars to Stansfield's voice and contribution to music industry.

5 out of 5 stars One of R & B's best & most underrated singers. A+.......2004-08-18

Lisa Stansfield has one of the greatest voices in music, yet with the exception of her debut CD, her musical efforts have not received the commercial acclaim that they warranted on this side of the Atlantic. Thank God for her native UK, as the fans have supported her and allowed her to have a career on her terms. This woman can do it all with a classic R &B voice that is both explosive yet ever so subtle depending on her intent. She can handle disco and heartbreak in the same breath. And for those of you who have heard the soundtrack for "Swing," you already know that Lisa can tackle the classics like few in music can.

This release more than lives up to its title, something rarely accomplished these days. This collection highlights Lisa's greatest hits in a non-chronological order that in my opinion generally better serves greatest hits collections. Released in 2003, the collection includes her very best from 1989's "Affliction" through her 2001 release "Face Up," along with a live song with G. Michael and the living members of Queen. Although I am generally not a fan of live songs, this one hits the mark.

Hearing this collection I am reminded not only how great a singer Lisa is, but how her sound has evolved through the years. In many ways, she seems to be from another era as her best songs are always sleek yet have much grit. It would seem to be a contradictory statement but Lisa's sound stands out because of these apparent contradictions. She is at once a chanteuse in the vein of a much earlier era who also happens to be right at home with the likes of Barry White and other 1970s legends.

If you love female singers and have never been exposed to Lisa Stansfield, you should give this collection a shot. If you are already a fan but only remember her from the curly-cued girl who sand "All Around the World," you will certainly like what she has been up to since she first hit the scene. In 1997, Lisa released a self-titled CD after a 6-year absence from the music scene that made some noise here in the States, but that release (which also earns 5 stars in my book) should have been a smash. It did well enough for her record company to put out a remixes CD that did quite well. A UK edition of this release has a bonus CD with some of the better remixes of her songs, so if you are interested in those be sure to look for that release as you won't find any of those here.

P.S. for hard-core Lisa fans: I just found out via the Amazon UK site that in late September of this year Lisa will be releasing a new CD titled "The Moment." It appears that she is no longer with Arista as the site says it will be released Ztt, which may be a German label. I am not sure if it will get a US release, but I am so happy that I happened to run into this while researching some dates for this review. I hope this helps.

5 out of 5 stars Love this CD.......2000-06-21

Having seen Laura Love perform in Seattle a few times, I got this CD, and it is absolutely great. Every song is excellent. If you have eclectic taste in music you will want to have this. I have had it for several years and it has held up better than 99% of my CD collection.

5 out of 5 stars love at first hear.......2000-05-05

Just got back from MerleFest in NC where she appeared. Caught the 2nd half of her show on Saturday, fell in love with her, broke my neck to see her 2nd act on Sunday. Bought Pangaea at the show since it was the only title left. Thursday I'm here buying Octoroon & Collection. Can't wait for it to get even better. Wish she'd break out on the bass.

    5 out of 5 stars Laura Love's best work..........1999-10-05

...which is why she keeps re-doing songs from it on her major label CDs. This one actually isn't full of over-the-top yodeling (I don't recall any "yodels" per se on it at all), so if the thought of that stuff puts you off, you should still hear this CD. Full of great songs, great musicianship, and lots of variety -- from rock to jazz syncopation to funk, etc., and no filler or formula material. I wish I could say the same for her latest CD (the pretty dismal "Shum Ticky"--other than the two "Pangaea" and one "Helvetica Bold" songs on it!).

5 out of 5 stars An absolute favorite album.......1999-09-05

I agree with the previous review: Buy It! Poetic lyrics with music that makes me want to stomp my feet. And the yodeling is really fantastic. I bought the CD after hearing her live a few years ago (another experience I recommend).

5 out of 5 stars BUY THIS ALBUM!!.......1999-05-21

If you're reading this review, you must be thinking of buying the album. Two words of advice: Do it! Laura Love is one of the best contemporary songwriters in any genre. This was the first album of hers I ever heard all the way through, and although admittedly it took a couple of listens to get accustomed to it (her voice is like no other), it quickly gained status as a constant-play item in my CD collection. She's rerecorded a number of the songs on here now that she's on a big label, but I still like the versions on this one the best. Give it a couple of spins yourself: you won't ever get the songs, or her voice, out of your head again.

5 out of 5 stars archaeology of the future.......2004-09-30

Of everything Ms. Monk has recorded, this is to my opinion the very best. Despite all the emphasis on Dolmen Music, don't forget about the other four songs on the album, they're precious! Musically truly amazing and - yes - spiritually moving, the title track can be best decribed as a form of musical archaeology, gradually uncovering some sort of future community. This might sound vague, and the association might be entirely personal, being both a musician and an archaeologist myself. But listen to this incredible work of art, and you will never listen to the human voice in the same way again.

5 out of 5 stars STRANGE DIMENSIONS OF THE HUMAN VOICE.......2002-07-09

To quote Meredith Monk: "The voice is a language, a world of continuing discoveries." She uses her voice to sing, moan, yodel, squeal, whisper and gurgle, at the same time conjuring up a panoply of characters, from elderly women and precocious children to shrieking ghosts and chanting priests. With the exception of The Tale, she does this on Dolmen Music without words, restricting herself to swooping vocalisation, inventive phonemes and ritualistic incantations. The Tale starts off with a child's weird laughter and vocal contortions and then proceeds into some weird lyrics over shattering glass and car horns. The long piece Dolmen Music that concludes the album, sounds very gothic and medieval with interweaving male and female voices. There is very little to compare Monk's work with - perhaps the closest would be some of the works of Diamanda Galas or Tibetan overtone chanting. All in all, a very unusual album that takes to human voice to places it's never been before.

    5 out of 5 stars Wow!.......2002-02-14

I just can't get this album out of my head. It's pretty incredible. I didn't even know human voics could make some of the sounds that you hear on this.

First of all, if you're reading this I imagine you're already familiar with Monk. She's not exactly "mainstream," so why else would you be here reading this? Approach this and other Monk albums with an open mind; Meredith Monk is the musical equivalent of abstract expressionism, so if you're expecting something that resembles any preconceived notions of what music traditionally is, forget it! This takes the art to a whole new level. But this is truly a haunting album. I have portions of track five stuck in my head.

    4 out of 5 stars A fascinating disc.......2000-11-13

This CD includes one of Monk's few "songs" (with lyrics) -- "The Tale" -- which is a quirky, funny little piece -- and the 20 min title track, which was also titled at one point "Stonehenge," I gather. Both of these are extremely strong cuts and worth listening to. My favorite Monk CD is BOOK OF DAYS, also transplanting us to some imaginary past; my second favorite is FACING NORTH, which, recorded in Banff, explores the feel of the arctic. Third on the list is DOLMEN MUSIC. Only serious devotees need proceed further, though DO YOU BE has some good moments, too (but is out-of-print, I think).

Biography is Tim Neumark's debut album. It includes 11 original compositions, and an original arrangement of Karl Jenkins' Palladio, a song that has become recently popular through diamond commercials. Relaxing, meditative music with powerful emotional and spiritual undertones creates an exciting listening experience. Solo piano.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars From Solo Piano Publications.......2007-07-15

"Biography" is a very impressive debut from pianist/composer Tim Neumark. The twelve mostly original compositions are meditative and emotionally compelling. Themes range from the course of a summer day to the events of 9/11/2001, to prayer and a lullaby. That's quite a variety, but although the pieces are distinctly individual, the tone and pace of the music are consistent enough for a beautiful backdrop for dinner, reading, or just enjoying. Recorded on a Steinway B grand piano, the sound is rich and expressive.

The first four tracks are called "Summertime Suite." The composition began during a sleepless night spent at the piano. As dawn brought the first glimmer of light onto the piano keys, the inspiration came to compose a piece centered around the passage of time through a summer day. "Dawn" begins very simply and quietly, becoming more melodic as the sun gets brighter and warmer. One of the more carefree pieces on the album, it is full of hope and optimism for a beautiful new day. "Midday" pictures birds resting in their nests in the shade after a busy morning. Smooth, reflective, and very graceful, this piece is a gem. "Dance" was inspired by watching two birds playing in flight, each trying to outdo the other. Upbeat and full of fun, the piece is all about freedom and joy. "Twilight" calms the mood and slows the pace. One of my favorite tracks, Neumark very effectively brings in the deep bass of the piano to add darkness, contrasting with the sparkling treble "stars" and "moonlight." Gorgeous! "Meditation: Quiet Time in a Church" is quite different, in that it is more structured and hymnlike. "City of Courage" is a magnificent piece that was composed to express the overwhelming mix of emotions that erupted on 9/11/2001. It begins as a long melodic ode to the city of New York, and intensifies as the events of the day evolve. The middle theme pictures souls rising to heaven, and is based on the melody to "Heaven's Gate" by Toni Childs. The first theme returns in the third movement, becoming very dark and questioning, reflecting the uncertainty we all felt in the days and weeks that followed. This is an amazing piece. "The Dream of You" follows, full of hope and love, bringing us full circle emotionally. The piano seems to be especially well-suited to depicting rain in all its variety, and Neumark's "Red Rain" is a shining example. The title comes from being at a stop light, feeling directionless, and the stop light turning the rain red. The beginning is very spare and melancholy - gentle raindrops falling on the windshield. The melody builds, sometimes flowing, sometimes gently percussive, always deeply emotional. I really love this piece! (Sheet music???) In keeping with the biographical theme of the album, Neumark included his first composition, a charming piece called "Beginnings." "Diamond Music" is an arrangement of Karl Jenkins' "Palladio," which has been used extensively in diamond commercials the past few years. Neumark arranged the piece for a friend's wedding, and then played it as a prelude to his own wedding. It's a very effective piano solo. The CD closes with a simple, sincere "Prayer."

What a great debut! Tim Neumark is working on a Christmas album for release this year, and I can't wait to hear that one, too. Very highly recommended!

This is great, relaxing, inspiring music. Very uplifting, wonderful for listening to at work or during dinnertime. This will be enjoyed by people of all ages. I can't wait for Tim's next cd!

5 out of 5 stars A fantastic album with some unearthed gems!.......2006-01-27

Roy Rogers remains a beloved American hero. He basically played himself. This album includes some wonderful recordings. There are a few older cuts from the 40s and 50s on RCA. But most of the recordings are from the 60s and 70s on Capitol. Dale Evans is on two cuts. There are only a few cowboy songs on this collection. Most are of a country vein. Some of the best cuts are the previously unreleased songs. Where have they been? How come they were in the vaults so long? My favorite is Sunday Kind Of Love. Contrary to some descriptions, Hoppy, Gene, and Me isn't on this album. My beefs are very few. Some information about the recordings, especially the "new stuff," would have been nice. As with too many great albums, you wish it was longer. The album ends with a goodbye from one of his radio shows. You hear a little of Tumbling Tumbleweeds. This is a good introduction to Roy Rogers' outstanding singing and yodeling. There is one Gospel song. Dale Evans said that she wrote The Bible Tells Me So in a few minutes. It was the title song of their debut album with Capitol.

5 out of 5 stars Ride Down Happy Trails!.......2003-05-26

This CD takes the listener on a pleasure ride down memory lane. Whether reminiscent of the Old West, or dominated by romance, humor or inspiration, all of its melodies are enjoyable. This is a great CD for all lifelong Saddle Pals.

This stunning four-CD collection is a great companion to Quincy Jones's excellent autobiography. It's also a great compilation of his eclectic genius, which has touched everyone from bebopper Clifford Brown to hip-hop rapper Ice-T. The Grammy Award-winning composer-producer has something for everybody here. His jazz sides include his first recorded trumpet solo on "Kingfish" (with the great vibraphonist Lionel Hampton). There's also his swinging composition "Stockholm Sweetnin'" and his hip arrangements for Peggy Lee, Count Basie, Sarah Vaughan, and Miles Davis. Film buffs will love Jones's swinging soundtrack music, including the Latin lilt of "Soul Bossa Nova" from Austin Powers, the gritty vocals of Ray Charles on "In the Heat of the Night," the bluesy "Miss Celie's Blues (Sister)" from The Color Purple, and the hilarious "Sanford & Son Theme (The Street Beater)." Then, there's Michael Jackson's megahit, "Thriller," Frank Sinatra's "Fly Me to the Moon," and some long-lost gems, like the Brothers Johnson's immortal rendition of Shuggie Otis's spacey classic, "Strawberry Letter 23," Lesley Gore's bubblegum tune, "You Don't Own Me," and the all-star track, "We Are the World." Jones's best work as a solo artist includes his slick renditions of Benny Golson's "Killer Joe," Herbie Hancock's lush "Tell Me a Bedtime Story," and the rarely heard ballad "Everything Must Change." This collection summarizes Quincy Jones's brilliant career, and it showcases the some of the best of our musical heritage. --Eugene Holley Jr.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Such a wonderful collection of the best music.......2005-08-07

I had no idea who Quincy Jones really was until I watched a PBS special the other night called American Masters. I am a big fan of his album "Big Band Bossa Nova" and I was amazed to see that he did a great deal of big-band styled music. This box set encompasses so many different aspects of his career. Big band music, movie & television scores, to producing some of pop music's greatest stars. I am extremely pleased with this purchase. There are so many great songs on these 4 discs they will be in heavy rotation on my MP3 player for quite some time.

5 out of 5 stars Great material, excellently remastered.......2002-12-22

This collection runs the gamut of pop and jazz musical styles. When songs differed between the single and album version, the single version is used. For a Rhino box set, this title has excellent remastering. Instead of the usually over-bright presentation, Bernie Grundman is the remastering engineer here -- and he treats these tracks with a slight hand, allowing the original musicality of the master tapes shine through. You probably don't have these tracks sounding this good elsewhere in your collection (unless you own the Grundman remastered Michael Jackson albums).

        4 out of 5 stars Great collection.......2002-01-05

The wide array of music in this collection is amazing - I've always enjoyed his later albums (The Dude, Back on The Block) but this collection opened up the depth of his earlier work to me. I had originally ordered this from Amazon, but cancelled it after I found it at a discount club (Costco)...

5 out of 5 stars Incredible collection of music history.......2001-12-30

Jones's musical biography is a history of American music. The variety and depth of the music compiled on these CDs is amazing.

5 out of 5 stars The Dude Throws Down.......2001-11-23

This is the title of the 4th in the 4 CD in the boxed set - a chronicle of music from 1953 onwards. His talent is intensely felt from track 1, CD 1......and doesn't let up! At 23 Q was recognised by Gillespie as talented .. and on this set you hear the best. I spent my Thanksgiving day cooking & listening and you can be sure of giving a life long wonderful gift - to yourself or anyone from 14 to 94. The only question you will have about this set is how did you miss this concentrated genius spreading his energy. Jazz, hip hop and musical scores and so much more- Heat of the Night to Austin Powers- Bossa Nova TV shows- Ironside; Frank Sinatra, Bono, Michael Jackson and Hampton. And you wonder why my husband and 5 sons said the dinner was the best? This set has a most reasonable price and well worth at least twice as much - Thank-you QJ.
