Sweet Seraphic Fire brings together two unique bodies of American sacred song: choral compositions from the New England singing-school tradition and the most popular Evangelical Protestant hymn texts in historic American use. In the late eighteenth century the New England singing-school movement produced America's first great sacred-music style, employing several genres of unaccompanied four-part choral compositions with the melody in the lead (tenor) part. The enormous popularity of singing-school music also promoted a canon of hymn texts shared across America's competing Evangelical Protestant denominations. This recording contains neglected masterworks from the New England singing school that also helped to create the American hymn canon. Marking a more recent turn in this process, we have also included some new settings of traditional Evangelical lyrics written by leaders in the revival of singing-school music that has blossomed in the Northeast since 1976. ! Selection of pieces for this recording was determined by correlating "The Norumbega Harmony"--our collection of one hundred six historic New England singing-school compositions and thirty contemporary works in traditional style--with a list of the three hundred most frequently printed hymn texts in America from 1737 to 1960. --Stephen Marini

Fantastic!!!!!!.......2006-03-15

This is a REALLY cool album of shape-note singings, I particurlarly like EVERY STRING AWAKE and ANTHEM FOR EASTER.
Some of the songs are kind of dreary, (Hatfield) but all in all this is COOL!!!

New "old" find.......2007-03-23

I decided to check this cd out when I heard Garen Gueyikian's new band, Kill the Alarm, playing in New York several months ago. I just loved Garen's voice and rock style. Granian's style is slightly different, but still sounds amazing. I'm genuinely surprised this cd didn't get more commercial attention. It's pretty radio-friendly, but by no means unoriginal or recycled. The songwriting is excellent, the melodies are very nice and catchy in a good way. My favorite songs are probably "My Voice" and "On My Own". Check out his new band, Kill the Alarm, if you like this!

Just heard Granian and am completely amazed! Haven't taken the CD out of my player! LOVE IT! The sound is so refreshing.....would definitely recommend to everyone!

On My Own Two Feet.......2005-12-24

This CD is awesome. I've been following Granian for almost 6 years now and the music just gets better and better. This CD is fresh, original and honest. Granian has a very original sound. Alot of music on the radio right now sounds like you've heard something very similar before, but not Granian. The band is absolutely incredible in concert also whether it is acoustic or full band, the energy is incredible and the emotions in the songs definately come through. This is a great buy and definately worth the money. This CD is one that commercial labels would die to release!! A real treasure.. the other three CDs are great too.. make sure if you buy one and you like it... buy the others too!!!

it ain't all that.......2005-10-09

These songs sound like the lovechild of Blue October and Third Eye Blind. If you want to hear truly original music by Granian, buy Hang Around or Without Change.

Really Original Music.......2005-09-30

This is the best "undiscovered" group that I have had the privilege to listening to. Their music is original; they are great musicians and performers. I do not understand why they have not achieved at least the recognition that some lesser groups have, although I suspect that it is because they are on an independent label. If you like Five for Fighting, Lifehouse, Train, or similar groups you will like these guys. If you like this disk try "Hang Around" by the same group (I have not yet listened to their first disk, but I will be purchasing it soon).

Excellent Vocal Trance.......2004-05-02

The only thing wrong with this CD is that there was no follow up album by Marc et Claude. If you like vocal trance, you'll love this CD. It's never far from my playlist. I'm surprised that it never got more exposure. The tracks "The Sound", "Free Spirit", "La" and "It's All For Love" are simply gorgeous. The others range from good to excellent (although I think "Loving You" is somewhat misplaced). It'll be a great addition to your collection.

Why isn't this more popular? All tracks are beautiful. This CD embodies my idea of perfect trance music...It takes me away to another place. Strangely, the weakest track is "Tremble". This is better than any other vocal trance cd I own...No filler...Just gorgeous music...HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
