Product Description
1998 & final album by the diverse post-modern British group. As always, it contains a wide array of sounds, ranging from psychedelic to techno to house with breakbeats, but without ever coming across as pop or totally underground. About halfof the 13 tracks features vocals. A suitably classy swan song for this great band's illustrious career. Contains two versions of the single 'Universal' (187 B.P. Metamix (Minor)& 1999 Dance Vocal). A Moshka Recordings Limited release.

5 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL.......2001-04-19

The cd is wonderful. It brings back memories of when I was small and I love the old hymns that were song. That's the way we talked because of no formal education. It's important not to lose our culture which they are trying to keep going. I loved the story telling, especially the chicken dinner money and when the son went to New York. I love hearing the Gullah People talk. They are so warm, honest and talented.

2 out of 5 stars Tanning with your eyes open wide!.......2004-05-29

This album is incredibly ambient with lots of electronic sounds floating, and breathy voices echoing in and out of the stratosphere. Pacific is simple in its structure; and for the most part is listenable. At timed it tries to do way too much of the underwater country and emo blend for the eardrums, but their down-tempo jinglebell opiate trip is a recommendation if you like slower music that's stuck between trying to impress the scenesters and rehashing acoustic grunge. Overall I'd say this album would be perfect for a midnight mescaline trip on a west-coast beach, or some other equally applicable deviation. The group includes Lucas Jensen, clay, and Howard Hudson, and is currently playing shows to support the release. Visit their website and show the band some support at http://www.thewarmsupercomputer.com. Content copyright www.maximumink.com

5 out of 5 stars Oh but yes..........2004-02-28

As of now I have only had this album about 24 hours, and I'm sure I have given it a spin 5 or 6 times so far. It is mood music, and I'm talking about the mood where you drink wine or take a bath, and I happen to really enjoy that mood. So I did both of those things in response. Also it has been very musically inspiring to me, and it's hard to resist the urge to bust out my cello and play along. I will definitely be on the lookout for this band's live performances and future records.

5 out of 5 stars amazing!.......2003-11-05

mix in 7 parts the best of slowdive, 2 parts the best of mojave 3, 1/2 a part the best of spiritualized, and 1/2 a part the best of jesus and mary chain, and voila! a really impressive album. don't listen to the 2 star reviewer, he's just bitter that this album rivals slowdive's soulvaki. hipsters get upset whenever anything comes close to reaching the heights of their staples... (loveless, storm in heaven, soulvaki, disentegration...) but this does it.

5 out of 5 stars Gorgeous.......2003-10-01

This one hasn't left my cd player since I got it last week - a really impressive debut of beautifully crafted Shoegazer music, bringing together lots of classic sounds from bands like Slowdive and blending them into a diverse and highly pleasant mix. I look forward to more from this band!

5 out of 5 stars Stunningly beautiful!.......2003-08-20

I have not heard an album like this in years.

In the early 1990s, I loved the fluid, relaxing sounds produced by Slowdive, My Bloody Valentine (i.e. the Tremolo EP), Lush (Split), Cocteau Twins, and Curve (the Frozen EP). But it seemed that by mid-decade, this style of music I loved so much had vanished. Lush abandoned their floating sound and came out front with Lovelife, with the hit song "Ladykillers" sounding like angry surf music rather than the gentle, floating music they had been making. Curve became more up front and aggressive with Doppleganger. I never heard from Slowdive and My Bloody Valentine again after the early 1990s.

So since then, I've been listening to these old albums when in the mood for laidback summer music. More recently, I've been thoroughly enjoying Starflyer 59 and Bon Voyage, who have had a type of floating music, but their albums are more pop. (If you like the song "All The Traps" by Bon Voyage, you are certain to like this Pacific UV album--similar in sound and mood.)

I picked up this CD on the basis of the album cover and the fact that one of the instruments listed was "drones." I didn't know what to expect, but certainly it wasn't what I got! What a wonderful surprise! This lovely style of music I've been missing, back again!

The music is very slow, just drifting along. The male vocals are sung at lower register and as someone would sing while they were far away in thought (think Starflyer 59). Sometimes the male vocalist is accompanied by a female, who sings in the same manner. The electric guitars don't play notes so much as drift along. It is all so beautiful.

This album is perfect for lazy days of summer. The fluid sounds of the music make it perfect for enjoying while at the ocean. You've got to listen to this at least once through headphones--at a couple points, the sound shimmers back and forth between your left and right ears, helping to create that floating feeling. At one point in the song "Blind," I can envision just having come over a hill and suddenly seeing before me the vast stretches of the ocean...a grand yet relaxing feeling.

If you are far away from the ocean, this also works for lakes or quiet pools or perhaps even a hammock. Actually, I sometimes listen to this at work! I work in a windowless office, and when I have some tasks that are more mechanical, I can put on this album and forget about being in a windowless office...this album takes me oceanside, basking in the sun, like I'm almost really there.

I have been listening to this album a lot! There is not a single weak song on it; every song is equally wondrous, whether instrumental or vocal. Every time I put it on, it makes me feel so good, so relaxed, so peaceful. It is stunningly beautiful music! I am so glad I have come across this album!!!

Album Description

In their first-ever recording of American Jewish music, the world-famous Vienna Choir Boys are joined by the Chief Cantor of the Great Synagogue of Jerusalem, Naftali Herstik, and by Cantor Shimon Craimer. This disc features joyful new music and stirring, tuneful melodies that have thrilled audiences during recent international concert tours of the Vienna Choir Boys. Kalib's The Day of Rest is a concert service comprising settings of texts from three sections of the Sabbath liturgy. Psalms of Abraham is a cantata comprising twelve original settings of Psalms (or excerpts) from the biblical Book of Psalms—so titled in honor of the Beth Abraham Youth Choir.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A must listen........2006-03-31

Something that is really unique and different from the Vienna Boys Choir. The arrangements, and accompaniments were excellent. Orginally the works were for a boys choir plus cantor, but was re-arranged for 4 part male choir and cantor. The cantos were excellent, and the Vienna Boys Choir sand at their best. Some of the soprano solos sounded a bit strained, but overall, I took a gamble when I purchased this, and I really enjoy this CD.

I This this was a very underrated album. I wish they recorded more albums. Their classic Livin' In Da Bottle deals with alcohol madness. Cee's rhyming style sticks to the subject matter and cleverly uses metaphors. Others to look out for are To The Head, Ruffneck Style, Gettin Money and I love Loosey's. very good 1st effort. Recommended.

4 out of 5 stars These selections will give you a good overview of the entire 15-CD Grass Series.......2006-12-13

Playing Time 40:03 - A REVIEW OF THE ENTIRE 15-CD GRASS SERIES - What an ambitious project from a new kid on the bluegrass block, two-year-old Synergy Entertainment in New York! The Grass Series boasts a total collection of 15 albums that tapped professional Nashville-based bluegrass artists to cover the music of various bands and musicians from other genres. Produced by Donald Marrow, their intent is to present contemporary rock, pop and gospel in an acoustic bluegrass format. I would highly recommend that you start with the "Best `uv Grass" 14-song sampler (running just over 40 minutes) with one hand-picked favorite track from each album in the entire collection.

So just who are these Grassmasters who were hired for the session work? There's some impressive talent among the lineup, and then there are also a few pickers who could've been more proficient in the bluegrass idiom. Tommy White (dobro) is one master musician who appears on all 15 albums. Those who appear on a majority of the 15 releases include Billy Hullett (guitars), Tammy Rogers (fiddle, mandolin), Hoot Hester (fiddle, mandolin), Fred Newell (mandolin), Vic Jordan (banjo), Daniel O'Lannerghty or Charlie Chadwick (bass). Andrea Zonn fiddles on a third of the albums, and she evens provides some short-lived smooth vocalizing on two albums in the series. Where there are multiple players of the same instrument or various vocalists, liner notes don't clearly indicate who is playing on what cut. Every once in awhile, the moon and stars align and a few special renditions jump out at you. More often, however, the goal of producing a large volume of material in a short period of time seems to have led to problematic issues with arrangement, instrumentation, or presentation.

There are a few things to be aware of about the Grass Series. The earlier releases (StonesGrass, BeatlesGrass, EaglesGrass and FleetwoodGrass) have no vocals at all. These four in the series (as well as AeroGrass) also include Bob Mater's drums. He's steady, but bluegrass aficionados may want this primarily instrumental music without percussion and just let the mandolin chop the backbeat. BeatlesGrass could've used some stronger banjo work. Interestingly, liner notes don't provide a credit for the banjo in the mix of the DeadGrass project. Vic Jordan (most likely) must've been forgotten that day!

With the exception of the 15-song KidsGrass and 14-song Best'uvGrass, the other CDs each offer twelve selections. Buyers should be aware that they range from a low of 28 minutes (ElvisGrass) to nearly 49 minutes worth of music (EaglesGrass). While the former includes some refrains courtesy of The Jordanaires, the song arrangements are short and typically only about two minutes apiece. While the latter has a number of 4- and 5-minute renditions of Eagles tunes, there are no vocals. Where's the happy medium that provides for thoughtful, creative arrangements with both instrumental and vocal prowess?

With their slogan of "Please Keep on the Grass," this series is worth checking out if you're in search of mostly instrumental bluegrass covers of the material. Comparing The Grass Series to the CMH Label's "Pickin' On" Series, it appears that the former stays closer to a traditional bluegrass sound with no electric instruments, and little percussion as noted above. Also, the "Pickin' On" series features musicians from a greater geographic area than just Nashville. Their consistency in quality may be more variable whereas the "Grass Series" has a constant of the same producer and core group of top Nashville session musicians (with special guests as needed for each production's specific needs).

All things considered, here are a few observations on this specific album, only one in the entire 15-CD Grass Series:

** Best `uv Grass (Playing Time 40:03) - From the opening salvo of "We Can Work It Out" (from BeatlesGrass) to "Old MacDonald Had A Farm" (from KidsGrass), you'll get a great tasting and overview of the entire catalog of budget-priced albums. You'll quickly realize that some songs you really want to hear the lyrics with have only been arranged as instrumentals. "Salty Dog Blues" has drive but no soulful tenor exclaiming "Now looky here Sal, I know you, run down stockin' and a worn out shoe." A few other incorporate drums or harmonica, in addition to the standard traditional bluegrass instrumentation. They do fine instrumental jobs with songs like "Dream On" (AeroGrass), "Stir It Up" (MarleyGrass), and "Take It Easy" (EaglesGrass), but I sure miss the words. "Don't Be Cruel" and "Teddy Bear" (ElvisGrass), "Ring of Fire" (CashGrass), and even "Old MacDonald Had A Farm" are given rather syrupy Nashvillain renditions that might work for karaoke singers needing some schmaltzy bluegrass backup. When vocals do appear on the albums, they are often just choruses. I can't quite fathom why verses were dropped, unless the original intent was to record these songs for bluegrass karaoke accompaniment or just background easy listening. Some arrangements certainly work better than others.

Album Description

Athens, GA's Pacific UV have since freed themselves from the dreamy, shoe-gaze roots that defined their critically acclaimed 2003 debut full-length by relocating to Portland and taking a brief respite. At just under 20 minutes, "EP" fills the void and vacuum of their former signature space with driving guitars, disgruntled electronics, and remorseful lyrics. "EP" could be the soundtrack for the more abrasive dreams of Phil Spector and/or Joe Meek. This is a taster for the group's upcoming second full-length, in early 2007.

After hearing the lead single, "Play My Funk", it was hard to determine the direction in which the album would go. The closest that comes to Simple E's style may have been Left Eye. There's another surprise, she sings as well. The album is as colorful as the title, Colouz Uv Sound, but lacked with substance and the fact that she recycled her own lyrics to create hooks for other songs. For a debut this isn't a good sign. The creativity upheld as the album was falling due to lack of attention. Smoking is a must as the mood gives a more relaxing atmosphere on "Kinke Reggae". "Realite" or reality is captivating with its realism as it gives closure to this LP on a good note.
