It is great to have this material to play in any motor vehicle. Most newer vehicles do not have cassette any more. My new Kia Amanti has both a cassette and a CD making all my old favorites possible to play.

Who else, but Buti.......2003-01-18

Among opera singers there is often a role associasted with a singer (for example, Callas/Tosca, Bastianini/Carlo Gerard, Gobi/Scarpia)..But in time others attempt the same role with various degrees of success, and sometimes even unseat the front runner!...Not so with Carlo Buti...there will never be another popular song interpreter like him, who has been imitated but never equaled. Every song in this collection - some of which are very hard to find - is recommended 100% by one who has heard him in person as well as in recordings. Bravo Buti, Bravissimo!

JUST PERFECTION!!.......2006-04-08

I have all of Dmitri's recordings and this is my favorite due to the quality of the songs, Dmitri's mastery of all of them and the really lush orchestrations. All of the songs are just gorgeous and his voice so beautiful that I listen to this all day at work on my portable CD player. I recently saw him in concert and purchased the DVD of the "War Songs" which were featured in the second half of his concert. Of course, I recommend the CD and the DVD as really stunning. However, if I could only listen to one of his CD's, this is my favorite. As a former singer who trained for 15 years, I can tell you that Dmitri's vocal technique is perfect, just perfect! The voice comes from heaven! Don't wait to get this one!

Hvorostovsky...........again, magic.......2006-02-14

Moscow Nights - This collection is emotionally draining, sad; the minor keys, the great poets and composers, an era unexpressed to Americans. It is a revelation, tended by one of the most beautiful of Russian voices. Listen to it in pieces, in a quiet space, and ponder. Dmitri commands an opera stage - two visits to Queen of Spades at the Met- can lead to no other conclusion. However, it is his quiet recollections of Russian folk music, Russian sacred music, and Soviet music that arouses his greatest talents. This is a recording to be treasured.

hvorostovsky does it again.......2005-05-01

This is the latest installment of the succesfull Hvorostosky/Orbelian collaboration. In "I met you my love" the spotlight was on the socalled Russian Romances, russian art songs of the 19e century. Then came " Where are you my brothers" a collection of Russian war songs. This title contains a collection of the best post war(50s&60s) songs. If you love melodious songs in minor key this is it.The selection is quiet varied and everybody will have his or her own favourites. For me there was'nt a redundant song. The singing is as always faultless and inspired, the Moscow Chamber Orchestra plays topnotch and the arrangments by Evgeny Stesyuk are as always beautifull. But be warned this cd can have a depressing effect because besides being beautifull this music is also mostly very moving. Buy if you love russian music and good musicianship you can't go wrong with this one.

Very Pleasing Collection of Short Virtuoso Pieces.......2007-06-21

Starker manifests a beautiful tone and plays in a sweetly nuanced style that is both precise and flowing. Shuku Iwasaki, accompanying on piano, has just the right touch. The selection consists of largely familiar melodies from the mainstream repertoire. The recording quality is excellent, in accord with Denon's high standards. Highly recommended for the casual and close listener alike.

One of my favorite cello albums.......2007-06-13

On a whim, I picked up a copy of the CD, "Ultra Relaxing Cello Solos" while waiting for a plane. The musicians were not identified on the album, just the composers. The music was so fabulous that I had to find out more about the artists. Lo and behold, I discovered that many of the pieces on that generic album were performed by Janos Starker. I have now obtained copies of most of Starker's albums, and this one is definitely one of the best. Every time that I listen to it, I think that I have a favorite piece, but when I listen to it again, another piece jumps out. Whether you are a cello fan or not, you will enjoy this great compilation by Janos Starker.

In this recording Janos Starker exhibits an astounding display of technical mastery of the cello, caressing each nuance and making technical impossiblilities into unique musical experiences. As a cellist, I highly recommend this recording for both study and casual listening, and anyone who enjoys the beauty of the best instrument ever will love it!

Delightful collection.......2001-03-25

A delightful collection of shorter works for violin with piano accompaniment, some of them extremely familiar, others less so, but with Grumiaux's lyrical style (not flamboyant like Perlman's, but graceful and beautiful in an understated way), and fine accompaniment, the music on these 2 CDs is consistently excellent and can be listened to either consecutively or just a few pieces at a time. Well worth having.

Album Description

Sam Pacetti grew up in St. Augustine, Florida. At age 13, he saw Chet Atkins on TV and thought, "Yeah, that's the way guitar should be played." So Sam bought a couple of finger-picks and grew his nails. "I was terrible," he admits. Fate intervened shortly afterwards in the person of Gamble Rogers, the legendary picker and raconteur from St. Augustine who took the young Pacetti under his wing. After hearing Pacetti play, Rogers asked the high school student if he'd like to get together and pick a little guitar. Pacetti and Rogers met and played weekly for the next year. Tragically, Rogers died while trying to rescue a tourist caught in a rip current at Flagler Beach, Florida. Pacetti played at Rogers' memorial service and still counts Rogers as his most important influence. Tradition and innovation neatly balance in Sam Pacetti's music, the whole infused by a relentless intelligence. Martin Simpson and Merle Travis are touchstones to Pacetti, and while there are strong elements of the Leo Kottke/John Renbourn school of guitar wizardry throughout his work, there is a powerful raw emotionality evident as well - an earthy sensuality more reminiscent of a Greg Brown or a red-dirt blues master than of a musical academic.

Incredible Guitarist.......2005-10-13

There's not much I can add to the other reviewers because they're all right on target. I first heard "Brian's Rapier" on a sampler CD put out by Waterbug Music, which is organized by Andrew Calhoun (another great musician). When I first heard it, my jaw dropped open in amazement. I couldn't wait to get the full CD and was not disappointed. Check out the Waterbug website to find other great folk musicians. If you like Leo Kottke, you'll be similarly impressed with Sam Pacetti.

Update 7/6: Sam has just released a new CD called "Union" a collaboration with Gabe Valla, who produced his first CD. They make an incredible duo. Unfortunately, it's not available yet on Amazon but check out Andrew Calhoun's website, Waterbug. If you thought this CD was good, wait 'till you hear Union! He's more controlled and it really showcases his real talent as a musican. Leo Kottke, for the most part, never seemed to graduate beyond his manic playing (at least the ones I heard).

absolutely top of the world class.......2004-12-21

I promise you none of the 5 star reviews of Sam Pacetti's "Solitary Travel" are exagerations. In fact most are understated. I caught Sam live at Cafe 11 in St Augustine, Florida as the opening act for the artist I went to see. I had never heard of Sam before that night but the treasure of his music was one of the most fantastic discoveries of my lifetime. Sam is a master guitarist who's every note rings clear as a bell. Some one needs to drag that lad back into the recording studio because there is a legacy in that man's soul that is hugely untapped. The world needs to hear Sam's music.

Outstanding!.......2004-05-05

As a folk and bluegrass DJ in northern Indiana, I am always on the lookout for artists that fall under the radar. Sam Pacetti certainly qualifies. His guitar-work on "Solitary Travel", is exceptional with an Irish flair, and he proves that he has a more than adequate voice to back up his own picking. His high-speed flatpicking instrumental numbers are the best on "Solitary Travel" -- "Brian's Rapier," "Merrily Kissed the Quaker's Wife," and "Triple-Sec" are outstanding, and Pacetti owns up to an obvious influence from Martin Simpson with his version of "Shawnee Town." While it seems he has a local stature in his native Florida, it appears that his following does not necessarily follow him out of the Sunshine State. This is a shame. I would glady list Pacetti in my "Best Folk Musicians Few Have Heard Of" category and would encourage more people to find and peruse his work, so that I may evetually take him OFF of the list.

Sam Pacetti.......2004-03-17

This man is the unsung hero of the guitar world. Sam is one of the most "mindful" musicians I have ever met in my life. Period. You have not lived until you hear his music. He touches the heart and will enlighten your existence. Not just with his herculine technical ability, but with his emotional delivery that is easily and most comfortably felt through this entire work. If you're ever in St. Augustine, FL at the Milltop Tavernon Monday nights... you'll be thankful you witnessed him live. Thanks Sam!

Live at Cafe Eleven.......2003-02-17

I have seen Sam play at Cafe Eleven in St. Augustine Beach and he is AMAZING. Having studied under Gamble Rogers he has taken his God given talent and expanded it to an extrordinary level. While seeming so relaxed, he plays with abandon and it sounds like two or more people are playing. He is a gentle, humble performer who loves to play, and is trying to help others by hosting singer soungwriter nights at the cafe. If you are a guitar player or just a music lover check out Sam and you will not be dissapointed.
