More interesting for its historical value than the music........2003-07-12

"Saturday Night Swing Session" was a radio program that aired in 1947, after most other programs of this type had stopped. From what I have read, it was essentially a blowing session for a lot of big name swing players at the time (Roy Eldridge, Charlie Ventura, Flip Phillips, Buddy Rich, etc.). This disc comprises two of the air dates. Listeners with modern jazz leanings (like me) will probably be more interested in the second date (last two tracks) for the inclusion of trumpeter Fats Navarro and tenor saxophonist Allen Eager, two players of the still new style, bebop. Fats in particular, takes a great three-chorus solo on, "Sweet Georgia Brown." (Since Fats died while in his mid 20s, just about anything by him is worth hearing.)

As is the case with many jam session records, the quality of the music fluctuates, but in general it is high given that there are so many great players. I think this disc will appeal mainly to fans of small group swing, but some modern jazz listeners may be interested in it for the later air date.
