Carrie Newcomer wonderfully combines the earthiness and social conscience of contemporary folk with a strong flair for elegant pop melodies. Though she's a teacher, social activist, and practicing Quaker, this rich 18-song collection (15 songs from her eight previous albums, three new compositions) reveals an ambitious and surprisingly broad thematic range that goes beyond mere didacticism or inspiration. Sure, there's a trace of benevolent righteousness in songs like "When One Door Closes," "Hold On," and "The Gathering of Spirits." Yet compelling tracks like the cynical "I Should've Known Better," the cleverly satirical "Bowling Baby," and the evocative title track reveal a willingness to grapple with messier and more troubling worldly themes as well. --Bob Allen

Not really the Best of..........2007-04-03
When it comes to Carrie's music, I'm sort of a newcomer (insert groan here), but I actually bought the album that came AFTER this one first (Regulars and Refugees). In my opinion, THAT CD is her best material, with almost every song being a gem.
THIS CD, however, is not bad at all. There are some great tracks (I'll Go Too, A Gathering of Spirits, The Moon Over Tuscon), and some not-so-great (Bowling Baby). And the title sounds much more alive on this CD than it's remix on 'Regulars'. This is probably a good retrospective of her previous CD's, and if you pay attention to which songs came from each CD, you can trace the maturing of her sound and of her songwriting. It makes me definitely want to go out and purchase 'A Gathering of Spirits'.
The main problem, as is the case with many 'Best of' CD's, is that it is merely a collection of songs that don't really fit well together. Some songs are wonderfully powerful or emotional, but sound very out-of-place sandwiched between other songw that bear no lyrical similarity and little (if any) musical continuity.
If not for her gift of songcraft, this CD would be rated lower. If you're into the economy of 'Best of' CD's, this one should be on you're list. If you want to REALLY experience an artist, expecially one with the depth of Ms. Newcomer, then I'd say start with 'Regulars and Refugees' and work your way back, skipping over this one.
Carrie Newcomer - local star, national talent.......2006-07-28
I've only started listening to Carrie in the last year, but she always impresses me with her ability to put emotion and life into relatable song. I love this CD and can't wait for her to release a new one!
A new favorite.......2004-10-05
I was delighted to stumble upon this greatest hits album, my first introduction to Carrie's work. I especially love the spiritual songs, Gathering of Spirits and When One Door Closes.

Carrie's very talented theres no doubt. I love her other stuff. But say what you will, BEST-OF's SUCK. Buy her other CDs!
Great Sampler.......2004-03-14
I have been listening to Carrie's music for more than 10 years now, and have introduced many many people to her music. Instead of picking the album that best fits the person, I will be keeping a couple of "Betty's" on hand. It contains some of the best of her other albums. That said, some real gems are missing--but at 17 tracks, how many more could she have chosen?

Customer Reviews:
Simply Amazing.......2006-06-13
I bought this on a whim from another website, and it has become one of my favorite cds, despite its frustratingly short play time. Mr. Murdoch's full length album is out now, and I will be buying it no questions asked, simply based on these four songs. This album has a very simple sound; it is clean and has just the right amount of polish. Orange sky is the highlight of the album, but I never find myself skipping the preceding songs to reach it.
Simply Wonderful.......2006-06-08
I'm going to only give this EP 4 stars because there's only 4 songs on it, but what an incredible debut. I was in Tower Records yesterday and saw that he had just released his "debut album," my only two problems being "why did it take so long?" and "how come there are 11 songs on it, 3 of which are on his 4 song EP?" What makes this EP wonderful is the combination of beautiful melodies and wonderful lyrics. 'Orange Sky' is the song everyone either knows or has heard on the radion before, but the other three songs are just as strong. It's the kind of music you can listen to on its own, absorbing the lyrics and the music or the type of music you can read a book too. People have compared it to Nick Drake, which is a good comparison, but he may be closer to Badly Drawn Boy or a male version of Fisher. This guy is going to be huge if he puts out music on a more consistent basis. Buy this and enjoy.
I enjoyed it.......2006-04-27
This album has only four songs, but I think it is rather well done. The songs are simple, but very well-composed and heartfelt.
Orange Sky is by far the best song out of the four.
An Amazing Debut EP.......2005-08-06
Alexi creates something special with his debut EP. He has a wonderful ability to create size with his music. If you are a fan of lyrically driven music that touches the soul you will love this EP.
By the way BEN HARPER RULES!!!
One song wonder..........2005-05-30
Orange Sky is a good song, but the rest of the album is forgettable. Other reviewers have commented about the similarity to Nick Drake -- not so, say I. Murdoch's lyrics lack the craft of Drake, and some of the lines where he has forced the lyric into a rhyme made me cringe. Very disappointing.

From the Label
Carrie Newcomer, one of contemporary folk's leading singer-songwriters, has crafted a fascinating conceptual work for her ninth album, Regulars and Refugees. Newcomer delves into the stories of the patrons at Betty's Diner, a fictitious restaurant where souls both tragic and triumphant dine side-by-side. The result is a touching, bittersweet glimpse at life, love, and humanity itself delivered with Newcomer's unerring melodic sense and rich, expressive alto. Come join the Regulars and Refugees at the diner for a visit. You won't be sorry you did.

A wonderful Tapestry of stories .......2006-12-13
Carrie Newcomer was coming to a Rhode Island coffeehouse, and I had never even heard of her. I stopped in at the chain bookstore and previewed this CD to see if I should attend the show. After five or six of the 30-second samples, I was hooked. I never did make it to the show, but I did go back and get this CD a couple of days later.
Ms. Newcomer has released a gem of an album, a collection of stories about fictional people who are so real that you can almost touch them. Whether singing the lamenting tale of a woman who works as a stripper to make enough money to feed her kids, or the carefree voice of a dog idolizing his owner, or the touching love story of an elderly couple, the songs are so finely crafted that I am touched by them over and over again, even after many listens.
I must also say that Carrie has a smooth voice?a VERY smooth voice. She doesn?t display a lot of range on here, but nonetheless captures the mood of each song and brings it to life. And as wonderful as the stories themselves and her velvety voice is the musical accompaniment. The arrangements are pretty sparse for the most part, especially on the ballads, but a few songs are a bit fuller (the infection ?Five Years On? comes to mind).
I?ve recently ordered another CD by her and cannot wait to hear it. Carrie Newcomer may not be a household name, but she really should be.
CARRIE NEWCOMER's MANY-FACETED VOICE OF COMPASSION . . ........2005-10-31
There is bound to be a DINER in everyone's past - - treasured for memories, tho' possibly a 'marker' of difficult times. Carrie Newcomer wrote a story about one and soon after, *Betty's Diner* was populated with a full-blown cast of characters. They come together as "regulars & refugees" in her latest album. From beautiful Alice & Roy to the youngest cast-member Tristan, these new friends will invade your consciousness, & your head will be full of the tunes as you follow your daily routines. The lilt of *Betty's Diner* makes you feel your cup truly "is filled with something kind."
Newcomer's husky alto has great appeal for me. I find her use of words fascinating: words seem to flow, simmer & burst in harmony with Mary Gaines' bass and other marvelous back-up instruments, even including that 'carpet scrap' & Sam Bartlett's claw hammer banjo! It surprised me to find that "I FLY" has become a favorite of mine. It seems to harken back to "My Father's Favorite Son" & "Amelia, almost Thirteen" . . . Many have messages with 'staying power': "La Paloma" . . . dying for air "Below the Waves" . . .
I see Carrie as a prolific song-writer, and someone who encourages the creative juices in others. (Perhaps you are one who should search for an opportunity to have her as a teacher?) You can hear in her many-faceted voice of compassion that the cause of justice is one of her lifetime priorities. "Regulars and Refugees" is the 10th Newcomer recording for Rounder/Philo Records; it is a peak performance. *DON'T MISS any opportunity to see & hear her in person!* is mcHAIKU's best advice.
When did I first hear you sing in Quaker ("silent"!) Meeting? Thank you, Carrie, for your strong hands, strong heart, and lovely voice that shivers through me like a haunting memory.
"Nothing's Ever Wasted & There Is A Spirit ~ Carrie Newcomer".......2005-08-16
Philo Records and Rounder Records present "Regulars and Refugees", featuring the latest release from Carrie Newcomer for fans and lovers of her music alike...this is a recording of extremely lyrical and melodic quality concentrating on some of the very best from her repertoire...the girl who gave us "Betty's Diner" with Rhubard Pie for dessert.
Let's take a look at some of the members in her band with Dane Clark on drms/percussion, Jeff Hedback on elec, upright and acoustic bass & carpet scrap, Keith Skooglund on classic, acoustic and electric guitars, Gary Walters on piano, Wurlitzer organ, Chris Wagoner on violin, baritone mandolin, lap steel guitar, accordion, dobro and vocals, Mary Gaines on cello, vocals, acoustic, bass, David Weber on vocals, Krista Detor on piano, vocals, Robert Meitus on acoustic guitar and vocals and Sam Bartlett on claw hammer banjo...this is an overall blanket to any serious music collection...one gem after another with top notch arrangements and performance, much more than just a toe tapper...each track represents Newcomer's incredible success as songwriter and performer through song...her voice and style are shades of Mary Chapin Carpenter, K.D. Lang and Anne Murray, not bad company to be in.
There are a few stand outs in this latest release "BE TRUE"..."NOTHING'S EVER WASTED"..."ALICE AND ROY"..."ARTHUR B AND BOB"..."LA PALOMA"..."THERE IS A SPIRIT"..."BEFORE THE FALL"...and of course "BETTY'S DINER", Carrie's deep vocals have grown increasingly uninhibited with lyrics of palpable honesty about them...Newcomer's career travels back to her roots in Indiana and continues right up to the present...she has covered every genre from Blues, Jazz, Folk and Pop Rock...with one of the most recognizable voices and styles in music today...her records and albums "Visions and Dreams" (1991), "An Angle at My Shoulder" (1994), "The Bird or the Wing" (1995), "My Father's Only Son" (1996), "My True Name" (1998), "The Age of Possibility" (2000), "The Gathering of Spirits" (2002), "Bare to the Bone" (2002), "Betty's Diner: The Best of Carrier Newcomer" (box set)...can remember her with the folk band "Stone Soup", knew she would eventually land out there on her own with a solo career...this to date is her best album..."Regulars and Refugees", has Grammy written all over it!

Carrie Newcomer is underrated.......2007-02-22
I loved every song on this CD. They really spoke to me including Gathering of Spirits, Holy is the Day and all the others. I am a middleaged mom with mostly grown children and the songs seemed to be about many of things that are part of my life.
Surpised by how much I enjoy this CD.......2006-11-04
I had to play this CD over several times when I first got it, because I needed to be sure of what I had heard. These songs resonated deeply in me immediately. "Holy As a Day Is Spent" and "I Heard an Owl" are arresting songs, powerful in their connections. I remain astounded by how close to my feelings Carrie Newcomer's songs are; it's wonderful to hear my contemplative times articulated so harmoniously.
If you don't like her voice..........2003-05-13
...better bail before the first verse is done. Otherwise you're just going to have to learn to love that graceful/gutsy alto.
Her lyrics will have you. They're literate, bittersweet, deep. She's been places and figured out a few things. Better yet, you'll get the feeling she'd rather discuss them with you than just tell you about them. You'll want more of them.
Don't worry, just kidding - you'll like the voice a lot!
Stellar.......2003-04-23
Carrie Newcomer is a poet illuminating the darkness. Her words work as well bare on the page as they do set to music. Novelist Barbara Kingsolver is a fan. But Newcomer also possesses one of the most stunning voices in folk, an enchanting alto somewhere between Mary Chapin Carpenter and Christine McVie. With "The Gathering of Spirits," (Philo) her latest, she has released a superb followup to "The Age of Possibility," her infectious 2000 offering.
While she acknowledges the darkness, she looks for the simple pleasures, even in the toughest of times. On the album's title cut, a duet with Alison Krauss, she notes, "life's a twinkling, that's for certain. But it's such a fine thing."
On her 9/11 offering, "I Heard an Owl," she assures that she still believes, but also points a finger. "Don't tell me hate is ever right or God's will," she sings. "These are the wheels we put in motion ourselves."
Typically, Newcomer venerates the details of life; she finds beauty and grace there. The music is varied, never settling on a predictable foundation. "Holy as the Day is Spent" and the touching, "I'll Go Too" are acoustic meditations. "Straight to the Point" and the defiant "I'm Still Standing" are pop rockers with country touches that easily could fit on a Mary Chapin disc. She even has a little fun with "Silver:" "Will you love me if I babble, let me win sometimes at Scrabble?"
Newcomer takes such small moments and explores the surface beneath with unusual grace and insight. That makes "The Gathering of Spirits" one of the best releases to come along this year.
Absolutely the best of her career!.......2002-09-10
I have been following Carrie's music ever since I found out we share the same birthday (May 25th, but I'm MUCH, MUCH OLDER!!!). Seriously, I was turned on to Carrie's music by some good friends, and have been a fan since her days with The Dorkestra. Carrie's songwriting has evolved into some of the best on the contemporary singer/songwriter scene, and she couples that with her expressive alto voice.
This, the highly anticipated follow-up to her successful "The Age Of Possibility", addresses issues of a more current nature, including the timely "I Heard An Owl", Carrie's observations of just a year ago after the terrorist attacks on New York and Washington. Truly, the highlight of the disc is the title song, sung as a duet with the wonderful Alison Krauss, certain to become one of Carrie's most requested songs for years to come.
I had the privilege of opening a pair of shows for Carrie in March of 2000. She is as lovely a human being as she is talented. If the adage of "good things come to those who wait" has any meaning at all, she will finally realize the success that has been eluding her for awhile that places her on the top tier of singer/songwriters on the international scale.

Though Carrie Newcomer ranks with the most literary-minded of contemporary troubadours, The Age of Possibility is as impressive for its musical buoyancy and melodic grace as it is for its narrative command. The album finds Newcomer, coproducer Mark Williams, and session leader Don Dixon achieving a perfect balance of sound and sense. Subtle touches pay significant dividends: the cello that underscores the hymnlike purity of "Thread" and "Sparrow," the accordion that waltzes through the autobiographical "Just Like Downtown," the vibraphone that gives the shimmer to "Seven Dreams." For all the thematic ambition of this song cycle--as Newcomer sings of love and loss, blood and legacy, the passage of time and the timelessness of faith--the results are never ponderous or preachy. --Don McLeese
Customer Reviews:
Carrie is great, as usual.......2007-01-09
Carrie's albums are never-fail great, but I admit that I like her newer work more.
My favorite!.......2003-09-27
This is probably my favortie album of Carrie's. I do love them all and think they are all great; this is my favorite. When I need a big time pick-me-up on my way to or from work this is the one that goes in to the CD player. The song "Bare The Bone" speaks to my heart and I can not begin to explain it any further in writing... It, however, is not the only great song on the album and all are worthy of standing on their own. A Must Buy for all music lovers!!
Still growing with every listen.......2001-08-01
Currently one of my most played CDs. I was disappointed by My True Name and initially felt this one was average but it just keeps getting better. Carrie's voice is rich and expressive, instrumentally the playing is strong and tasteful and the song arrangements are superb. Some of the songs are her strongest ever - the uptempo Tornado Alley, All I Know, When It's Gone and the brilliant Just Like Downtown are great band tracks while the quieter ballads, Bare to the Bone, This Too Will Pass, Sparrow and my favourite, Thread are gorgeous. Some nice new sounds - the vibes on Seven Dreams are excellent. If I have any criticism, I would have liked a few more lead melody instruments standing out - fiddle, accordion, mandolin (as feature on Visions and Dreams) and I still think she needs to work on lyrics - sometimes they're too self indulgent. I would give this 4 and a half stars if that was possible. It is an excellent collection.
The voice has a familiar sound..........2001-05-20
I received a promotional 3 track cd sampler of "The Age Of Possibilty," through my work... I normaly don't put much stock in newer artists because of what we're given to choose from in music these days. I new absolutely nothing about Carrie, but I gave it a chance, and I'm so glad I did. I was very pleased w/ the three selectoions I found on the disc, "When It's Gone, It's Gone", the first song on the sampler is a very soothing, not too slow, not too fast, tune that is quite catchy... as the unsuspecting listener, I found myself taping my foot along to it. "Threads," a slow number, takes a touching reflective lyric and tugs at the heart strings. "The Moon Over Tucson," is another slow number, though not as slow as "Threads," Carrie seems to take you by the hand on this one and walks you through this song. Carrie Newcomer has a beautiful voice,(lower in register than some women, and a bit haunting), and seems to have the abilty to pull the emotions out from her listeners w/out effoert... and her voice bears a striking resemblence to another favorite of mine... Kathy Matea, and though I wouldn't exactly call Carrie country... she's close. The instrumentation is also excellent... a bit of a lazy, summer day feel to the whole thing, and w/ great arrangements and Carrie's inviting, (and again haunting voice), pulling the whole thing together beautifully. If you like good music, good songs, and good singing, (in the vein of Kathy Matea), buy "The Age Of Possibility" a.s.a.p.! I know I'll be gettin' all the past ones as well.
p.s. If Carrie every reads these reviews... I'm glad I took a chance and had my ears open the day I got this... I'll be buyin' all your work from here on out! ...Let the wind blow like horses running wild across the sky... good on you Carrie!
cheers - Ian Carlos Salazar.
WOW!!.......2001-04-24
"When it's gone, it's gone, but the echoes just go on and on," sings Carrie Newcomer on the first track of her AGE OF POSSIBILITY album. Aside from being a terrific song to kick off the CD, this quote says it all about Carrie's music. Long after the last track plays, the album's powerful songs still "echo" through the listener's mind.
In AGE OF POSSIBILITY, Carrie clearly establishes herself as a talented songwriter and musician. With her unique music combining folk, country, rock, and pop, rich, soulful voice, and powerful lyrics, she creates a diverse style rarely seen on the music scene today. Each song on this album is wonderful--from the first track, the music seems to take hold of you and gradually pull you in until all you can do is sit and listen. The opening cut "When It's Gone It's Gone," as well as the next track "Tornado Alley," contain hypnotic lyrics and music that leave the listener hypnotized, while more upbeat songs like "Love Is Wide" and "All I Know" contribute to the variety of music on the album. Carrie's inspirational, poetic lyrics on songs such as "Threads" and "This Too Shall Pass" add a personal, creative flair. My personal favorite, however, is "Bare To the Bone" (track #6), a song that sums up almost perfectly the experiences I have had over the last few years.
Whether you are a fan of folk, rock, or country, AGE OF POSSIBILITY is just the CD for you. There is something for everyone on it and I guaranteee you will not be disappointed. I recommend this album to anyone who just enjoys listening to music!

One of her best efforts.......2003-01-26
I've been a fan of Carrie's since I first heard her perform in 1993. One of her first recordings on a national label (Rounder), The Bird or the Wing is classic Carrie Newcomer, packed with intelligent, passionate lyrics and a strong sense of melody. Though I own all of Carrie's recordings (many now) several tracks from this disc are on my personal "best of" compilation CDR, including "Holy Ground" and "Wisdom is watching." Though not outright _excellent_ as her later "My Father's Only Son," (a desert island disc for me), this is still a must have for fans of intelligent singer-songwriters. As a guitarist, I'm also pleased to hear Carrie experiment with new open tunings and production techniques that create a very pleasing mix from her typical small-bodied instruments.
Irresistable.......1999-11-05
I have enjoyed Carrie's music for three years now. She has a way of adding precious touches to everyday events and things. Her music brings forth humor, love, wishes and family.
If you get a chance, go to her live concerts. She truly connects with the audience.
One of the ten best cds in my 500+ collection!.......1999-01-16
Carrie is a true find. once you've heard one of her cds you'll want them all, but buy this one first. A stunning, unique alto voice, combined with her wise, haunting, sincere and always honest songwriting. Bird or the Wing is a treasure and a pleasure from start to finish. Best tracks: Closer to Home, Yes of Yes, Holy Ground.

With her Martin guitar and long cotton-print dresses, Indiana's Carrie Newcomer would seem to be the very model of the modern folk musician. She quickly dispels that notion, however, with the very first song on My Father's Only Son. The song is "Crazy in Love," and before Newcomer even opens her mouth, her folk-rock band shatters any possible mood of introspection with a twangy electric guitar riff and soulful organ chords. "You wouldn't think a grown woman would act like a high school girl," Newcomer sings, celebrating such pop-music prejudices as action over thought and passion over prudence. Not every song on My Father's Only Son escapes the endemic carefulness of coffeehouse folk as successfully as "Crazy in Love," and Newcomer sometimes gives in to whispery quaintness. --Geoffrey Himes

My Father's Only Son.......2005-09-10
This was a gift for my husband and he loved it.
This CD is more of a folk/ballad type of music.
She has a way of drawing you in and making you remember times of your own past.
My husband's favorite song is,"My Father's Only Son."
Carrie's twangiest.........2005-01-16
I love all of Carrie's music. This album is a great place for someone coming from country music to start with.
In my all time top 5 recordings!.......2003-01-15
Literally days after my wife and I moved to Indiana in 1993 we happened upon a concert in the city park; Carrie Newcomer opened the show and we've been fans ever since, eagerly awaiting each new album. Happily, we had the chance to meet and spend some time with her several times over the years, which has made her music even more special to us. My Father's Only Son remains my favorite of all her recordings for its strong writing, great melodies, and personal lyrics that reflect a lot of Carrie and a fair amount of midwestern life. It's a CD we've given as gifts and a copy has remained in our car for at least the last 75,000 miles we've driven. I highly recommend this disc to anyone into folk, singer-songwriters, or just plain real music that's about-- to quote Randy Travis from another context --"people and feelings." It's a desert island disc for sure!
My Personal Favorite.......2002-03-20
It's not easy to choose a favorite recording by Carrie Newcomer, since they are all excellent in different ways, but I would have to choose "My Father's Only Son" above the others. I keep coming back these songs as if they were old friends -- "My Father's Only Son" ('You don't talk much in a fishing boat/It just scares the fish away...'), "I'm Not Thinking of You", "Up In the Attic", "The Madness You Get Used To" and "The Rooms My Mother Made" are five solid reasons why this album should become part of your permanent collection. If you've never heard Carrie's voice wrap itself around your heart and mind, this just might be the best way to do it until you're able to see her in concert. She's a treasure.
An extremely talented performer and writer........1999-07-19
Carrie is a world class writer and performer. She has a voice that can carry the message in that special way it has to be done. I have yet to be disappointed in any of her works. I feel that she does not get the recognition she deserves.

You have to hear her.......2000-01-18
I bought this CD after seeing Carrie Newcomer sing at a benefit to save local forests in Bloomington, IN. Seeing her perform is a wonderful experience- you can really feel her reaching out towards the audience with a pureness of emotion and a folk strength. It's conveyed very well in this recording, and I think it's something everyone ought to hear, whether you like folk, country, or rock, buy this CD and listen to it when you're feeling down, at peace, or just thoughtful.
Uplifting, emotional, and honest...you'll love this CD.......1999-01-24
This CD displays Carries tremendous range as a singer-songwriter. At times, this CD rocks (Razor's Edge), while at other times offers a country feel (What Kind of Love Is This). It even offers a gospel feel in (When One Door Closes...), which has to be one of the most uplifting songs I've ever heard. I think the best writing that's done anywhere today is in the current group of singer-songwriters, and to my mind (and ear), Carrie Newcomer is the brightest star in the group. If you like pure, honest, great music, you'll love this CD. And, if you get a chance to see Carrie and her band perform live, its a show not to be missed. Easy 5 stars.
"My True Name" is among the finest folk albums of today.......1998-10-03
Carrie Newcomer continues to outdo herself: just when you think you've heard the best of her music, she comes out with a new album that breaks new ground in both songwriting and musical performance. Newcomer's "My True Name", showcasing her strong vocals and her excellent band, has the most "polished" sound of any of her albums, but "polished" is by no means lacking depth or originality. Newcomer's music is hard to fit into one genre description. On this album, she sings both intimate, well-crafted contemporary-folk ballads as well as energized, foot-stomping country. But within each individual song are rhythms and traces of other musical genres, including blues ("Take it Around Again") and gospel ("When One Door Closes"). "I Should Have Known Better," is as good of a "been done wrong" song as can be heard on today's country stations. In "What Kind of Love of This," also clearly country, Newcomer cautions her listeners about "all kinds of crazy things people do in the name of love" while remaining upbeat and optimistic. "When One Door Closes" is possibly the most infectious song on the album. She sings it like a gospel hymn, inviting her audience to open themselves up to new paths and new directions: "You can't pray for what you want, or what you'd have instead/You can only open up your heart, and ask that you be led." This song is probably the best-produced of this album, and features an upbeat gospel chorus in the background. This genuine spirituality pervades Newcomer's music; in the gentle "Close Your Eyes," she reassures her listener that "your heart knows why/and what's the truth, and what's the lie." Newcomer's lyrics could often stand alone as written poetry, yet the music enhances and deepens their meaning. "The Moon Over Tucson," based on the essay "High Tide in Tucson" by novelist Barbara Kingsolver, explores the premieval forces, like the pulling of the moon, that call us and move us even though we may not be consciously aware of them; as Newcomer reminds us "so much of what we are we won't call by name." In "The Razor's Edge," Newcomer's sings of a difficult past and her brave resolve to move forward. The song starts out quiet and builds throughout, as the singer literally finds her voice, and ends in a fast and furious jam on the electric guitar by members of Newcomer's band. Newcomer's performance on this song is reminiscent of that of the Pretenders' Chrissy Hynde, and proves that she has the versatility and vocal strength to sing rock. Newcomer's slower, acoustic ballads - like all her music - are remarkable in that they express her own personal experience in a way that invites her listeners to see parallels in their own lives. "The Length of My Arms" is about the singer's acceptance of what she has been born with - in this case arms that are "ridiculously long." "We finally cherish what we've got from the start/Like the length of our own arms, and the shape of our hearts." In the title song, "My True Name," Newcomer sings of the extraordinary freedom in being able to let down all facades and reveal true identity. "My True Name" is an appropriate title for this thoughtfully-written, brilliantly performed album. Carrie Newcomer's voice comes across strong and clear. Whatever you name her style - folk, country, rock - her music is among the most honest and original being made today.
Heart-warming and true, this music gets you where you live.......1998-06-12
My True Name, like all of Carrie Newcomer's recordings, shows her uncanny ability to remind us of the value in the little things that we all take for granted, but that tie us together and make us human. Her view is refreshingly optimistic and her lyrics subtle and hard to pin down. She sings with a voice that is incredibly warm and flexible and a style that combines the best of folk, country, and rock. I am uplifted every time I listen to this intelligent, expressive music.

This one made me a fan.......1999-07-02
I was flipping through a bargain bin and came up with this winner. Carrie has a wonderfully rich voice. Her songs are thought provoking, and fun; heart warming and tearful. No big production here, her voice and instruments stand up by themselves.
Indiana natives are familiar with the sound of Newcomer.......1999-01-12
I have had this CD for almost ten years. Back from the days when she sold her merchandise out of her car. This woman can sing from her heart and soul. Anyone can relate to the emotions stirred in each of her songs. This CD is fabulous!

Like Mary Chapin Carpenter?.......2003-02-08
Then you will like Carrie Newcomer. Deep, rich vocals and nice, melancholic lyrics. This is a solid CD. From the first to the last tune, you will appreciate her luxurious voice. Take a gamble! You will win
Definitely one of her best albums.......1999-01-15
I was introduced to Carrie's music by a another very talented singer when I was 18 years old. ALthough I'm only 23 now and most would say I couldn't possibly understand all the dynamics of her lyrics, I would have to disagree. When I have searched helplessly for words to convey my feelings about important people and issues in my life, I always seem to come back to Carrie's lyrics to find meaning, clarity, and heartfelt expression of exactly what I am thinking. I've seen the reviews that question her wide range of stylistic preferences and always wonder how the reviewers have missed the "big picture" of the song or album. Every album she creates has its own unique personality and should be listened to with an ear for amazing lyrics and an open heart.
An absolute trusty must-have for contemplative roadtrips!.......1998-11-12
I agree with everything in the previous review - this selection has touched my heart again & again. Carrie has the unique ability to show the value and insights gained from the normal (& seemingly mundane) feelings and emotions which we all feel, while encouraging us to maintain hope. Though not necessarily written as such, many of her songs could well play as the soundtrack/commentary of certain times in many of our lives - a fine '1st album to buy' intro to this wonderful artist!
The best of Carrie Newcomer's early albums - a must have.......1998-10-25
Although I like all of Carrie Newcomer's albums, if I had to choose a favorite one, this would be it. Though the musical arrangements on this 1994 album are not as sophisticated as those on "Bird or the Wing," "My Father's Only Son," or "My True Name," Carrie Newcomer's songwriting and vocal performances are strong and moving. The songs flow together smoothly, from the rousing "Only One Shoe," in which Newcomer embraces optimism, to the gentle "Who Have You Been (and who are you now)" There are several very strong songs on this album. Besides the two already mentioned, "Hold On" is one of the most reassuring songs for anyone who has suffered through a difficult period in their lives. "Meet You on Monday" is a upbeat long song, and "In the City" and "Playing with Matches" are strong statements about homelessness and environmental awareness respectively.
I would recommend this album strongly to anyone who already knows Newcomer's work or wants to be introduced to it.
