(Om) I don't think I've ever come across a group whose name more accurately describes their music. Afro-Mystik have returned with their second full-length album, and this time they've abandoned the city completely and taken us straight to the natural setting of Mother Earth, with tribal percussion and sound effects you might find on a Sounds of the Jungle record. Morphology falls somewhere between broken beat and tribal house, with a bit of samba flavor for good measure. A few songs give the essence of a dark rainforest while others arouse visions of sun-soaked beaches. Collaborators include lead singer Omega (Blackalicious' backup singer), whose lovely voice is used only to complement the existing songs, and MC Capitol A, with his deep voice and lackluster rhymes. Unfortunately, the lyrics from both vocalists leave much to be desired. However, this album is about the music, and it fits snugly in the niche Afro-Mystik has carved out.

unpleasantly surprised.......2006-11-15

I am a huge fan of Afro-Mystik on the Om Lounge Series, but I really was not feeling their cd project as all the songs were almost indistinguishable. It was a little too much on the Afro-Latin beats for my tastes and thought they should focus more on the awesome vocals of Omega. If you are heavily into the Afro/Latin sound then this is the cd for you, but if you prefer a little more variety in a cd this may not be for you. I will say, however, the production is of high quality!

More of the same..........2003-07-08

...but in this case, that's a good thing! Afro-Mystik's sophomore release pretty much builds upon the Urban-Jungle-Meets-Madre-Gaia formula of "Future Tropic," but offers tighter jams and more atmospheric ambience in place of kicking breakbeats. If there is a serious flaw in "Morphology," it is the same one that held "Future Tropic" back: the spoken songs. "Follow Me" is a great song, but the others in which vocals are the main focus all fall short of the sheer sonic greatness that are the instrumentals. Skip tracks 4 and 8-10, and you will still have an excellent full-length recording.

If you like groups like Jazzanova , Jazzhole and Thievery Corporation, there's no excuse for passing up on the incredible second album from Afro-Mystik. "Morphology" is an album of percussion-heavy rhythms coupled with gritty vocals and a few subtle electronic touches--perfect for those who like global beats with a dance edge. What works on "Morphology?" Virtually every track, but special attention has to go to the seductive rhythms of the opener "Secrets," the discocentric "Follow Me," the dark textures of "Dreamwalkers," and "Anything You Want," with its jazzy cymbal touches. This is seriously twisted, edgy soul that uses real instruments, and the production is nuanced and multi-faceted. Whether you're looking for nu soul, cafe chillout, or just an all-around great disc to jam to, "Morphology" will give you 74 minutes of unadulterated bliss.
