Good album, but not as good as THE PUPPET MASTER.......2007-07-26

I must say it took me about 2 songs to get into this one, but by THE CELLAR, I was hooked. LaRoque shreds on this album similar to the glory days of 87-93, but I hated the fact KD didn't give us the grand falsetto that I feel we all miss.

That being said, it's still a great listen. Second best of KD's this decade with THE PUPPET MASTER way out in front. But you'll love this one as well. Keep rocking KING!

KIng Diamond does it again.......2007-07-24

King Diamond has released another great album "Give Me Your Soul Please" is an excellent follow up to "The Puppet Master". With great riffs and a creepy as HELL storyline, The King has found magic again, let's hope there is more twisted tails to come.

The King has done it again!

King's command of his voice is more controlled than it has ever been in his career. The story line is as good for conjuring up images in the imagination as ever.
The guitar work is just as inspirational as it was since Fatal Portrait but with a maturity that allows Andy and Mike to hit the sweet spots regularly.
The rhythm section is groovin with Hal putting down some very memorable bass lines.
The production makes me ever so glad these guys are able to have control over their recordings since Puppet Master. You can hear everything. The sound is warm. I would love to hear the album 'Them' re-recorded with Andy's mobile studio.

The true greatness is that all of these points, while they stand on their own, don't just stand by themselves. They mix together in a greater blend that makes this album one that gets replayed again and again, not only through the speakers but in your head as well.

More Tales Of Gothic Menace From The King.......2007-07-08

King Diamond has really created his own distinct style and genre, and in a playing field with no other contenders, he reamains the King indeed. King Diamond albums have been something I look forward to since I was 13 or so, when I first heard "Them". Bizarre, gothic and dark concept albums featuring the phenomenal classic metal guitar work of Andy LaRocque and others and, of course, King Diamond's incomparable caterwauling vocals and sinister storytelling, there is nothing else quite like it.

"Give Me Your Soul Please" is no exception, and an excellent addition to King's canon, his latest tale of the supernatural involves murder, suicide, a ghostly apparition of a little girl in a bloody dress, a black cat, and a floating severed head. So, business as usual. (laughs) I always love the way King assumes the voices of different characters in his stories in an almost theatrical manner, and the eerie music and amazing, intese riffs and solos laid out on this release by Mike Wead and Andy LaRocque are just sick....I had a blast with this disc, but for other King fans it is perhaps a bit weaker than some of his other releases (although it is hard to top the trifecta of "Them", "Conspiracy" and "The Eye", which remain my favorite). For folks who are new to the King, this really isn't a bad place at all to start. Be sure to listen all the way through, preferably in one sitting (the only proper way to listen to a King Diamond album). In a crowded metal scene, this stuff really comes off as being quite original....recommended!

From beyond the grave..........2007-07-07

Another splendid musical horror novel from King Diamond, the little girl in the bloody dress comes through the mirror, uncertain about her state of being... the introductory song "Dead" is laden with mood-setting organ, haunting voices explaining the basics of the disturbing plot, dealing with a little brother and sister who were murdered by their father, but are scheduled for different destinations "after death" - it is up to her to save him from Hell, after being accused by "the powers that be" of suicide. She reveals the true circumstances of their demise - to set the terms "right" so they may 'rest in peace' together, presumably in "Heaven", although 'demons' pine for both their 'souls' in this supernatural adventure / thriller concept album.

The album features the spectral voice of Livia Zita, whom you may recognize from 'The Puppet Master' as well, adding an enchanting compliment to the music as well as storyline. Besides the intricate Metal instrumentation, cellos and the harpsichord are included, adding an eerie feel to the brilliant orchestration.

Of particular note, My personal favorites herein are "Dead" {the 'gothic' horror instrumental}, "Give Me Your Soul" {really displays the talent and skill of the band}, "Shapes of Black" {great beat and harmony; one can actually relate to these occurrences, environment, and denizens}, "Cold As Ice" {the cold temperature in the dark room even in remmus}, "Girl In The Bloody Dress" {the rhythms and correlations of voices}, and "Moving On" {the hypnotically-melancholy quality and voice combinations} .

The aesthetics are predictably wonderfully ornate, of course featuring the band, and one Magic, King's black cat familiar, perceiving the ghost as familiars are said to sense. It was also gratifying to see the band dressed in black robes within, each signalling the Cornu, adding a most evocatively mystical impression. King promises a Hell of a show to accompany this chapter as well, repleat with horror psychodrama.

Overall, 'Give Me Your Soul... Please' is definitely one of King's best.

Loved the film. Loved the CD.
Set the table for two with candles, wine, and French food. Then, let this CD set the rest of the mood for a romantic evening.
The songs are varied between cheesy (but lovely) French and basal soul. Just enough variety to keep the listener listening throughout the entire CD. Definitely a compilation to relax with . . . or listen while driving to ease road rage.

Give Up, the debut release by this indie supergroup composed of Ben Gibbard from Death Cab for Cutie and Jimmy Tamborello from Dntel, is a smart, quaint, and often transcendent little pop record. The roots of the album lie in "(This Is) The Dream of Evan and Chan," a woozy, gorgeous song recorded for the rad 2001 Dntel album Life Is Full of Possibilities. With Jimmy in L.A. and Ben in Seattle, the two simply mailed tracks back and forth, collaborating via (you guessed it) the United States Post Office. Lyrically it's far breezier and happier (though not too happy) than anything Gibbard had written up to this point for Death Cab. The music is an elastic, very smart update of synth-pop and the melodies crystal clear, while the backing vocals courtesy of Jen Wood and Jenny Lewis are spartan and pretty. The songs stick in your head for days at a time. Forget the tags that have been thrown up against this music--Poptronica? New new new order? Please just enjoy this album. The District is alive with The Postal Service.......2007-06-04

Good 'ole rock is my primary music, but one day, about two months ago my friend hooked me up with some of The Postal Service's music. I never really listened to this Indie rock before, but now I'm searching for more music like it (Death Cab For Cutie, Figurine), and writing reviews on it. Honestly, this album is one of the best I've ever heard from any genre of music. Not until later did I realize that The Postal Service was merely a project of Ben Gibbard and Jimmy Tamborello's collaborations (dubbed The Postal Service because they traded ideas on the music through the mail). Since then I've checked out many other Indie bands but have yet to come across a better sound than this. It's simply the best.

Every album has its unique feel, and when I hear Give Up, I think of each song as a different story told from the downtown suburbs of some crowded city, maybe in the midwest somewhere. Starting with "The District Sleeps Alone Tonight" which is one of the best tracks we have here, to "Such Great Heights" that you may have recognized from a UPS commercial. "Sleeping In" was my favorite from the beginning but the more I listened to the CD, the more I realized that every song was just another favorite. This album is like that, packed with hit after hit. "We Will Become Silhouettes" is such a good arrangement that I went out and bought the single for it, stumbling upon another great song, "Be Still My Heart". I mean, are these guys capable of making a bad song? Listen to Give Up a few times and tell me.

I know some of you might be lukewarm about 'that' kind of music, but try it. You just might be surprised, like me.

There's nothing wrong with this record. The electo-pop melodies are good, not great. The vocals are delivered in a detached, bored monotone, a style that has become fashionable this decade. "Such Great Heights" and "The District Sleeps Alone Tonight" are pretty good pop songs, but here's a guarantee:

You buy this record now and you will not have any interest in listening to it in a two or three years. The only way you'll hear any of these songs then is if you're too lazy to update your mp3 player between now and 2010 and one of these tracks pops up on random play mode.

My Nostalgia.......2007-05-16

I've been reading a lot of the reviews on this album, and I find some of the negative reviews to be completely absurd. Some claim that the synth sounds rough like ataris. If you listen carefully, you hear that the synth used has beautiful layers of crisp sound. To those who call it boring and monotone- I have to say that you clearly must think beauty only comes in exciting and flashy forms. This album has emotional depth that touched me during an uncomfortable and confusing time. It also introduced me to the wonders of Ben Gibbard. I don't understand the criticism of his vocals. No, he's not American Idol, but he's never off-key or harsh sounding like the Decemberists or Modest Mouse often are. The use of the half-speaking/singing style is the postal service's trademark and I enjoy it's uniqueness.

Some albums should be respected simply because of the way they have touched people's lives. I dislike it when people diss remarkable bands like the beatles. Half of the value of music is it's interaction with the people who listen to it- not just it's complexity, ingenuity or uniqueness.

That's not to say that this album is lacking in those things, but to say that some people are too quick to judge music and miss out on some things (like Give Up) that demand appreciation.

For fans of "organic" electronica fusion........2007-05-02

This is NOT something I expected to enjoy as much as I did. I'm giving it 4 stars for the sake of tilting rating inflation that is nearly universal on Amazon. I like it better than Ben's "Death Cab..." work but I must say I'm not very familiar with the whole discography as I tend to be leaning toward more "challenging" music these days. I would lump this into the "organic electronica" category... leaning slightly toward "baroque pop". This type of music can be hard to pin down. Layers of sound and beats are incorporated in such a way that it does not come off as jarring but soothing. Scratchy analog noise juxtapose crystal clear 80's style syncs. Seemingly random sounds, electronic "sparkle", brass, base, and ambient noise are reminiscent of "Kid A" yet more optimistic rather than dark or indifferent. (oddly or coincidentally they both have a song called "national anthem") Low-fi string samples and time changes lead to climactic emotional moments perhaps most notable on "Brand New Colony."

Ben's lyrics have always fit the scope of his work but seem overly trite on this album. This project is however less about the lyrics and there are plenty of stellar albums that are none the less week in this regard... "Neon Bible" immediately comes to mind. Alas, an album is much greater than the sum of it's parts. It's difficult to say weather or not this body of work is truly original or just a rehash of something that came before. None the less an album need not be groundbreaking in order to be imeniently enjoyable. I'm growing tired of reviewers suggesting that another artist did it "better" in a past album. While it may or may not be true it does not invalidate a new piece of work nor does it undermine a past one. In this day there really are no new genres.

Unlike most reviewers here I will say that not everyone will love of even like this album at all. It's not mainstream; indeed not everyone thinks that "Funeral" is best thing in the world either. Everything is subjective. That being said fans of "Radiohead", "Arcade Fire", "Sufjan Stevens", "Idiot Pilot", later "Of Montreal", and many other other experimental electronica fusion or "new wave" albums may very well find a place for this in their collection. At least give it a listen and leave your bias at the door.

As fans of Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy know, each film exists in two versions: the theatrical one and the extended one that appeared on DVD. This luxurious box set--which also comes with a detailed essay on the movie's musical themes--features the full extended score, so many cues not on the CDs of the individual movies are included. Granted, the majority of listeners will be perfectly happy with the shorter versions of the scores--it's a safe bet that most people can live without hearing, say, Ian McKellen's 35-second-long ditty "The Road Goes Ever On" at the beginning of "Bag End," or Viggo Mortensen's performance of his own composition, "The Song of Lúthien," within the track "The Nazgûl." But if you're a completist and/or a devotee of Howard Shore's pounding tympani and overwhelming choral compositions (featured particularly prominently on disc 3, a large chunk of which is devoted to a battle scene), then this set is a dream come true. Beautiful.......2007-06-15

I picked up this set because I am both a LOTR fan, movies and books and I need music to help me work. There are some tracks that I skipped over, like the short little ditties in the bar, but many of the songs, such as the Elvish chants are easy to get lost in - its just too bad they don't last longer. The packaging really is well done, though the DVD disc was loose when I received it in the mail, but unharmed. I will have to wait until the price on the second set comes down a little more, but I can't wait for ROTK.

This is by far the editon to get if you loved the lord of the rings soundtrack. It has every song on it from the extended edition. and the DVD-A version is very nice.

Complete?.......2007-04-07

This CD collection is wonderful; it has much of the material from the movie that was only included in the extended edition DVD, but it is far from complete. While it does have the complete version of "The Passing of the Elves" and two versions of "The Road Goes Ever On", many of the songs are highly incomplete and inferior to the originals. "Aniron," the theme for Aragorn and Arwen performed by Enya, is incomplete and the lyrics are hard to match to what is being sung. The sound quality for this song is even worse on the accompanying DVD, which is supposed to have all of the music in "superior sound". The song "Prophecy" is reduced to two barely-audible lines and "May It Be" is shortened and different than the original. $60 for this when there are more complete songs on the original soundtrack is ridiculous.

Great Collection, Poor Packaging.......2007-04-03

I realy can't add to what others have said about this set, the music is simply the best LOTR soundtrack collection out there! It is all here, and the contents of this set will make any LOTR fan happy and the music DVD is a great one disc addition if you want to hear the entire score in one sitting (to which I have done a number of times already).
My only complaint is the somewhat flimsy cardboard box that houses the contents of this musical treasure. Mine came damaged, and considering the price, I expected better packaging. This is a minor quabble on my part and NO, I havent returned it due to the fact that the music itself Is what I truly treasure, It just would have been nicer to have recieved it undamaged.

Cynical types will accuse Disney of milking the "greatest" concept until it's drier than Tinkerbell's fairy dust ("Supercalafragilisticexpealidocious," "Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Da," and "Heigh Ho" were hits off of Vol. 1; "Bare Necessities," "It's a Small World," and "Some Day My Prince Will Come" stole the show on Vol. 2), but a glimpse of this installment's track listing is all it'll take to squash their suspicions. Once again running reverse-chronologically, Vol. 3 opens with Jonatha Brooke's gorgeously achy ballad "I'll Try," from 2002's arguably not-so-great Return to Neverland, and gradually reaches back through the years to re-raise the curtain on Toy Story 2 ("When She Loved Me," performed by Sarah McLachlan), The Lion King ("Can You Feel the Love Tonight"), Mary Poppins (Julie Andrews's classic "A Spoonful of Sugar"), Pinocchio ("Give a Little Whistle"), and a bundle of treasured others, bottoming out at 1933's "Who's Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf" from The Three Little Pigs. Vol. 3 is not without its weak moments--would a G-rated movie-goers' poll produce Beauty and the Beast's "Gaston" or The Hunchback of Notre Dame's "Topsy Turvy" on a hits list? Seems unlikely. Still, the bulk of these tracks are, as the included Little Mermaid song goes, "Part of Your World," and the spread of decades they represent proves their staying power. Don't expect Disney to latch the lid on its inexhaustible archives until a dozen or so of these records, each as strong as the next, beckon you back for more. --Tammy La Gorce

Nothing brings sweet recollection of Disney movies like hearing the wonderful songs. In an age where there so much music with no redeeming qualities, these Disney CDs are priceless. Wonderful for the entire family to listen to around the house or in the car while traveling. We can't help but sing along. We love that these are the original tracks from the movies! Wonderful! We now have all three volumes.

I love the songs on this volume. I'll Try by Jonatha Brooke is such an amzing somg. I especially bought this CD fort that song but, was pleasantly surprsed by the rest of the playlist.

Great Disney Music.......2006-02-21

I have bought the first 2 volumes of Disney's Greatest Hits and the 3rd volume doesn't disapoint. My 2 young children love to listen to this CD and talk about the movies that they come from. A definate must have!

Not as good as Vol 1 and Vol 2.......2005-09-11

This Disney CD represents the "leftovers" that didn't make it on Vol 1 and Vol 2 of this series. Although it has some of my favorites, I don't listen to the entire CD often. Disney could have done a better job of editing the which sound files should make the cut on this one. Still, it's nice to have all 3 CDs.

A sweet album of praise.......2006-12-18

At first, I was a little disappointed with this album, I'll admit...because I was expecting some great rock songs that I could belt out (way off-key!) in my car. But after giving it another chance without any expectations, I realized that the songs are beautiful, catchy, very well-written, and fill you up with good feelings and inspiration. My favorites are "I want to sing a song" and "Offering". If you like Third Day's "Wire" CD, then purchase this with an open mind. You will still love it, but for different reasons. :-)

Be prepared to be addicted........2006-11-10

I got this CD to become more familiar with some of the songs before seeing them at Autumn Blaze. I cannot stop playing this CD. It helps with road rage! :) How can you yell and curse someone when you're singing, "I want to sing a song for you Lord?" I haven't been much of a shower singer until this CD, now just listening to it isn't enough, I'm singing all the songs in the shower too. I love this CD! I love this band!

Superb worship.......2006-07-19

Third Day set high standards for themselves when they released Offerings: A Worship Album, in 2000. The second in what will hopefully become a series of worship releases by the Georgia quintet, All I Have To Give equals, if not surpasses, the first effort. With six new studio tracks and six live concert cuts, this CD will gratify fans who are eager for exclusive material, and inspire thousands to sing along in worship to God.

The CD includes covers of songs by Rich Mullins, Waterdeep, and even a brief homage to U2. Each track exudes Third Day's trademark southern-rock sound, with passionate vocals by Mac Powell. The new songs, apparently recorded within a span of eight days, are elegant in their simplicity. In fact, one of these songs, "Offering," was inspired by their first worship release! Special guest appearance by Michael Tait (formerly of dc Talk) on the ever-popular "God of Wonders" is also a pleasant surprise.

Perhaps the lone sore spot on this release is the inclusion of "Your Love Oh Lord," which was also on Offerings. Ever-inspiring as it was on the first release, it is the least of many tracks on this offering by Third Day that will leave listeners more on fire for God than before.

Good follow-up to the first.......2006-04-07

This album is a great worshipful album, with mostly slow to medium tempo worship songs. "Creed" is probably the most uptempo song on the album, and I find it a bit jarring in the context of the album. It's a great song, but doesn't seem to "fit" where it is in the album.

This is not a great CD to rock out to, but I think it is a great Third Day CD, and the perfect companion to the first Offerings.

Third Day Rocks!.......2006-02-24

I love everything that Third Day puts out. This worhip album is no exception. I found myself singing along with most of the songs and smiling and worshipping, too. Great buy!

Despite the tepid production by metal guru Sandy Pearlman, the Clash's sophomore album, Give 'Em Enough Rope, manages to burn with white-hot intensity. Though not as amateurish or snarling as their debut album, Rope finds the boys flexing their songwriting muscles. The first three songs ("Safe European Home," "English Civil War," and "Tommy Gun") stand among their most powerful and leap from the record with brute force. Extraordinary for its Prescience.......2007-04-19

As all the other reviews have noted - and as all Clash fans have known for years - Give 'Em Enough Rope is far from the band's best work. A shining example of the Sophomore Slump. But the passing of time - to where we stand in this time and place - has been favorable to the album. Granted, Sandy Perlman's hard rock production on The Clash's punk rock approach still feels disjointed, but Joe Strummer's lyrics and delivery - fueled by drummer Topper Headon's impeccable rhythms - feel more potent - more important - than they did when first released 30 years ago. Songs like "Safe European Home" addressing violence in Jamaica; "Tommy Gun," about soldiers of fortune with lyrics like "So let's agree / About the price / That's one jet airliner / For 10 prisoners"; and "Guns on the Roof" with "They tortured all the women and children / Then they put the men to the gun / 'Coz all across the human frontier / Freedom's always on the run," all resonate with an uneasy chill and truth.

Interesting it's this album that 3 decades on would prove that The Clash is STILL the only band that matters.

Sophomore Slump? Um, no...........2007-03-24

Okay. So it lacks the immediacy of the debut and the "anything-goes" attitude of London Calling. I could care less, I like Give 'em Enough Rope, at least up until the end. How anybody doesn't hear "classic" in a few of these songs is beyond me. May I remind you people this contains Safe European Home, a reggae-punk fusion that would alone make the album essential? And the snarling rocker English Civil War? And some tremendous drumming on Tommy Gun? Can't forget the funny-yet-serious Julie's Been Working for the Drug Squad, either. I'm not a fan of Mick Jones' voice, but Stay Free is a nicely emotional ballad. I like Guns on the Roof too, even if it's a rip off of The Who's far better I Can't Explain, the second the group recorded (#1 was Clash City Rockers, another great song).
So basically, the only real bad songs are All Young Punks and Last Gang in Town. Both abuse their indulgent five-minute running times horrendously. This is good stuff, though, and I like the cover art too.

Righteous Anger.........2007-02-26

I was there in New York on this tour as The Clash bombastically took the stage and tore the house down as they always did..angry at corporate power, this album of longer playing sounds, sprinkling of keyboards,better cleaner production mainstream producer,Marxist Maoist allusions throughout made The Clash a band that were the defining statement of the day. Not a bunch of playful Mods, The Clash meant business and were out to prove it..one of the seminal albums of the movement, belongs in every collection.

Everything the Clash ever recorded was important and this album is no different. The only problem with this album (just like the US release of the first album) was that corporate mororns tried to put the band into a box instead of letting them be who they were. The Difference Between Powerful Music and Arena-Rock Production.......2006-09-15

What happens when a punk band with a smashing sound meets a producer with connections to Blue Oyster Cult? You got it, Give 'em Enough Rope.

It is a solid set of songs marred by the arena-rock production of Sandy Pearlman. The band was disgusted with the final product and it should be no surprise that live sets after the tour to support its release did not feature too many of the cuts.

Too bad, because the U.S. debut - the second album released - finds Joe Strummer and band getting punk'd while absorbing the sights and sounds of Jamiaca in Safe European Home and taking aim at the growing legion of wannabes in All the Young Punks (New Boots and Contracts).

The energy of Tommy Gun and the social commentary in Drug-Stabbing Time and Julie's Been Working with the Drug Squad shows a band getting tighter lyrically and musically.

Give 'em Enough Rope will probably remain the most overlooked studio release by the band. But it is a powerful set that propelled them to greater heights with the rock classic London Calling that was released about a year later.

Bonnie Fan Since 70s.......2007-05-04

I can't even imagine my single life in the 70s & 80s without Bonnie and these songs, oh my gosh how I adore this woman. We used to always see her at Wolf Trap (in VA) along with John Prine, wow, I feel so lucky to have been there at the right time. There's no one more soulful, she can belt em out and also just KILL your heart with tenderness... she's just so so so so COOL, and I always have to sing along to her songs at the top of my lungs even as my teenagers run screaming from the room (not from Bonnie, from me)...this is such a dumb review, I just don't have words enough to describe Bonnie Raitt. I can tell you that at one of her concerts at Wolf Trap, probably early 80's, I broke my foot falling drunkenly down the stairs and stayed for the rest of the concert so I wouldn't miss any of the show. She's just one of a kind and a very generous musician, too, always giving the spotlight to other people. I love her. And so will you if by some horrifying chance, you've never heard her before. All of her albums are perfect, but this one may be my ultimate favorite.

Don't EVER Give This One Up..........2006-06-24

What a classic album. So many great songs and in very diverse styles. I don't think you'll find one filler on this one - easily her best album. It has beautiful ballads, rockin' blues, a touch of Dixieland jazz, little bit of everything. We used to wear the grooves out of this one back in our college days back in the early-mid 70's. And the one thing you absolutely had to love about Bonnie, she pulled no punches. A real gutsy gal and solid musician. Top shelf.

It is refreshing to read reviews from fans who were actually there when this CD was first released (as an album, ofcourse) back in '72, because listening to it today, one can also feel the same adoration for Bonnie. My stance is that, if you truly call yourself a music lover, then this CD is a must. It is gorgeous to listen to from the first song to the last. The musicians are in mint condition, and I must I agree with a reviewer who stated that this CD gives you the feeling of a casual studio session with everyone very relax and just there to make beautiful music. It is mainly Blues tinge but you will notice some New Orleans style dixieland blues in "Give it Up or Let Me Go" and "You Got to Know How." It makes you think that Bonnie is from the South, but she was actually born in Burbank, CA back in 1949. Wow, She a real Gem!!!

Bonnie at her best, before she tried disco and pop. No white chick could touch Bonnie in those days for true soul. I had all her albums - this one was never topped. And if you don't stop whatever you're doing and get all misty-eyed at "Stayed Too Long At The Fair," your heart ain't beatin'.
I saw her a few months after this album came out, at the Cellar Door in D.C., on stage with only Freebo the bass player (John Prine was the opening act). Fantastic night - those were the days.

Classic blues-rock album.......2005-01-24

Bonnie's first love is the blues but her music incorporates other influences including pop, folk and R+B. With three self-penned songs (Give it up, Nothing seems to matter, You told me baby) and seven other songs from diverse sources, this is one of Bonnie's finest albums, showing how she has pulled those different musical styles together.

The covers include the R+B classics I know (Barbara George) and If you gotta make a fool of somebody (originally recorded by James Ray, it became a major UK hit for Freddie and the dreamers, though I suspect that it was James Ray's version that inspired Bonnie's outstanding cover). Other great covers include Love has no pride (an Eric Kaz song that I first discovered on Linda Ronstadt's album, Don't cry now) and Under the falling sky (Jackson Browne).

This album, along with Bonnie's other early albums, did not receive the attention it deserved at the time, but as her reputation has grown, more people are learning just how good Bonnie's music really is - all of it, but especially those early albums.

Wonderful, but not my first choice.......2007-04-07

I believe this was the first recording of Elijah in English that used an "international" conductor and some international singers. Fruhbeck gives a good, dramatic sweep to the piece, with some wonderful dramatic moments. This is an old fashioned performance, with only a solo quartet, and if there is a semi-chorus, I can't tell the difference. This means that the soprano is the Widow, and an Angel, the mezzo the Angel and Queen Jezabel, etc. You really should have a libretto, but you don't get one at this price.
Fischer-Dieskau roughens up his voice for the role, and therein lies a problem. The voice spreads and his diction suffers because of it; that and his unidiomatic pronounciation, with far too many rolled "r"s. He does the drama well, but what works well in lieder works here less well on the large scale. Odd, given his success as on opera singer (check out his Iago), that here he frequently comes off blustery.
Dame Gwyneth Jones belies her reputation and gives a contolled, dramatic performance, using her "edge" to advantage in "Hear Ye, Israel". Gedda's diction is amazing, with exactly the right color for this literature, and projecting a little more blood than an English tenor.
Dame Janet Baker is my star in this performance. Dramatic, heart-rending when need be, and in wonderful voice. She'll chill your blood when she tells the people of Baal to "slaughter him, do what he hath done!".
And as for the people of Baal, the Philharmonia Chorus is wonderful. Incisive and dramatic, with beautiful tone. I could do without the trick of the boy choir for "Lift Thine Eyes", and I miss the small ensembles, but all in all a fine performance, and good recording, circa 1968.
First choice in English, Daniels/Terfel: better Elijah in Terfel, better recording, more authentic orchestra, small vocal ensembles (as per the score) but inferior women (including Fleming: beautiful tone, but where's her head?). In German, it's Sawallisch/Adam all the way.
But if you're singing Elijah, and have a score, this is a good choice.

THE BEST recording of the BEST oratorio ever..........2006-08-15

Okay, I'm gonna admit I'm biased- I first sung in the chorus of Elijah when I was 14 and it made a BIG impression on me!
This recording is in every way wonderful. Starting with Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau. He IS Elijah to me. His singing is perfection. He has amazing phrasing and his diction makes it possible to understand the lovely, inspired libretto to this heavenly music. There are so many pieces that are ephemeral, but a couple of my favorites are: #14, Lord God of Abraham and #37, For the Mountains shall Depart. Dieskau does a great job of what I think of as compassionate, heartfelt singing. His interpretation sounds like the voice of God himself. It has a quality of kindness and yet he sounds just as convincing reprimanding the people of Baal. He is the true highlight of this recording.

That said, the rest of the cast is wonderful as well. Gwyneth Jones has a lovely, silvery voice that has a clarion bell-like tone that rings over the large orchestra with ease. She has occasional "misfire" but is a consistent performer. Dame Janet Baker and Nicolai Gedda both perform at a consistently lovely level. The orchestra and chorus are both wonderful. #15, Cast thy Burden upon the Lord, #32 He that Shall Endure to the End, and #38 Then Did Elijah are all highlights.

All said, for me the main reason to get this recording is Dieskau's Elijah- after all, he's the main character. But don't forget the lovely music. This story is exciting and passionate and sacred all at the same time. For me, it's the best oratorio that has a moving story and great music too.

This is a good recording of an oratorio that deserves more attention. The chorus and soloists are very good--I just wish Fischer-Diskau wouldn't slide around so much in singing the title part!

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it.
