BRIDGING THE GAP.......2002-05-03
'spontanous reconstruction' opens with poppy beats and, of course, a lovely melody that bops its way along until it hits a speedbump of glitchy drill n bass, turning into an aphex twinish a la drukqs wall of sound. You can plainly see how this experimentation resulted in tracks like 'first:break'.
'unt it led states of' sounds like a remix of 'gogonal' from the weird backwards sounding popping bubbles percussion down to the deep bassline and persistent beats. If this was tacked onto niun nugging I would be hard pressed to tell that it was recorded almost a year and a half later.
'moral sack it' sounds like a different version of 'mompou'. That same brassy horn and weird atmospherics (minus the howling dog) as 'mompou'. It's just as short as well.
'introduce-live' seems to be a wasted track. Considering that it is live, I was expecting a different twist on it. Perhaps wilder beat arrangements, melodies or weird knob twiddling theatrics but with the exception of the cheering audience it plays out almost exactly like the album cut. A bit disappointing for me.
The other tracks waver between sounding 'niun nugging-ish' with undercurrents of the harsher, abrasive sounds of 'idiology' seeping through. Overall, this a very tight, cool sounding EP with more of the wonderful melodic sensiblities that MoM are so deft at creating. If 'idiology' turned you off (as it did me upon first listen) then you may be a bit surprised by agit itter it it. Good stuff, but not new.
