Although the Greek-born Ysatis is well known for his techno achievements - this is a follow-up to the successful Highrise on Tresor - he's also heavily influenced by the dry, minimal work of microsound master and 12k label-boss Taylor Deupree with whom he's collaborated on a variety of experimental electronic pieces. Perhaps that friendship is at the root of Select's dryness, a feeling that the rigid, cool techno-leaning beats of "Bull Walk" and the title track are perfect as though born in a white-walled art gallery instead of a dark and sweaty dance hall.
This stripped-out sound sets Select apart from other techno/house minimalists: the precision sweat of Vladislav Delay's lushly-arranged Luomo project, or the creamy basslines that resonate throughout the fabric of John Tejada & Arian Leviste's tracks are bloated with moisture in comparison. Even the suggestively titled "Sex Tan" is trimmed of all fat; it feels housey in its swank groove, but without all the weight of the genre's excessive sound trappings like careening vocals and party-pitched melodies. Likewise, "Out of Funk" bears an elastic bassline that, employed by anyone else, could serve as the basis for ten intricately woven layers of rich sound. But Ysatis's sparing use of genre-specific accents - again the mark of a minimal composer reigning in the excess - makes "Out of Funk" a wickedly complex track worthy of Bootsy Collins, were he wearing a linen suit and penny loafers. And that makes Select a clean funking necessity.

It is cool to hear the alternate versions of the songs from in our lifetime. It allows me to see deeper into his mind at that time. Some of the songs are directed at Janis on this album. He was in pain and he had a hard time letting go. Now these tracks would have made it big in the disco back then. Good music from an untouchable artist! He says in the song A Lover's Plea (if God can forgive me then why can't you? (Janis)). Over all, this is a worth the money set! Beautiful music which has now seen the light of day! Love Man!

Excellent reissue of Love's hard-to-find final studio chapters, plus extras!.......2007-06-30
Out Here is unquestionably the strongest disc of the set. Since it resulted from the same sessions that produced the excellent Four Sail album, it's nearly as good. Really, its main flaw is one that has plagued most double albums--filler. There's a few songs that are merely OK, which suggests that perhaps Out Here would have been dynamite if it were trimmed down a bit. Despite the occasional down moments, it's full of some excellent highlights, like the update of "Signed D.C.," which is darker than the original and drenched in doomy emotion. "Discharged" is a horn-accompanied change of pace, highlighting the biting satire that was ever-present on Forever Changes. "Doggone" is great, full of references to the old Love lineup, but for some reason it has an 8-minute long drum solo, which is probably the most typical instance of filler on the album (not poorly-played or anything, just unnecessary--and nowhere near as excessive as Da Capo's "Revelation"). The rest of the album is packed with excellent eclectic styles, like the folky "Willow Willow" and the dark and sublime closer, "Gather 'Round." Throughout the album, Lee's voice sounds as good and expressive as it ever has, and the band sounds pretty tight as well, though sometimes, in-between some blistering and jaw-dropping moments, Jay Donnelan's fuzzed-out guitar lines start to sound the same. Despite its occasional long-winded moments, I'd have to say that I enjoy Out Here as much or maybe more than Four Sail. Since it's out of print, the inclusion of Out Here in this set is worth the price of admission alone.
False Start is easily the weakest Love album. Yes, it does include that Hendrix collaboration, "The Everlasting First," but it's not THAT great of a song, and Jimi's guitar really doesn't sound anywhere near its peaks on his own records. The album grooves along at a pretty good clip, with songs that blend into each other, which is cool, but what's missing is substance. Arthur Lee, at his best, possessed a gift for turning mundane details into deep and resonant lyrics, but on False Start the lyrics rarely rise above the simply mundane, like the simple sing-song of "Flying," and the facile narration of "Slick Dick." Some of it's good gritty fun, the way throwaway rock should be, like the soulful "Feel Daddy Feel Good," but much of it is lyrical white noise set to some pretty groovy rock. Throw in an unnecessary live version of "Stand Out" (one of Out Here's more forgettable tracks) and at just under 30 minutes, False Start seems more than a bit half-hearted. Still, Lee's got that signature something in his voice and delivery, so even when he's mediocre it's worth some attention.
Live In England 1970 is probably what the serious collectors are interested in, and for pretty good reason. Not only is it the earliest official live Love album, but it also spans all of their albums through Out Here, including Forever Changes. I don't know if I'd call the live disc essential, but it's definitely worthwhile. The performances (from 3 different shows) can best be described as raw, for better and worse. On a few numbers, like "My Little Red Book," "Bummer In The Summer" and an epic take on "Gather 'Round," the band's all-electric sound really adds some weight and grit to Love's harder rock sound, and Lee's vocals really nail the songs' sentiments. On the other hand, he strains to hit the notes on "Orange Skies" and "Andmoreagain," and the heavy rock is a bit too plodding for some of the more delicate numbers. Likewise, "August" lacks some of the punch that made it such an effective opener for Four Sail. It's all a matter of taste, though, and I expect many fans will rightly be delighted with the live disc.
As a package, this reissue has its pros and cons. The most important thing--the sound--is great, so that's a relief and a pleasure. A couple things are a bit annoying, though. It's a 3 CD set, but the music could fit onto 2--honestly, it's pretty laughable that False Start, at 29:30, gets a full disc. It would have been nice to go for 2 discs (at the expense of having to split False Start up) in order to lower the price, which is not cheap. The packaging is nice--a fold out cardboard/plastic case with a raised "Love" logo on the front. I agree with the first review that the liner notes leave a bit to be desired, especially considering the price and inclusion of 3 albums' worth of music, but it's nice to get the album credits, and there are some good pictures. To sum up, I'd say that this collection is essential for Love fans, and the most cost-effective way to get this otherwise out-of-print and unreleased material in a consolidated form. Yeah, the music gets mixed reviews from a lot of critics and fans, but if you love Forever Changes and like Four Sail, there's a whole lot to enjoy here, and a lot that I think is worthwhile. Finally, be aware that this is a limited edition of 5,000 copies--even though this music is back in print, it might not be for long. Hope you enjoy!

Album Description
Last Time I Saw Him, a classic Diana Ross album overlooked in the digital era, finally makes its CD debut. Recorded and released in 1973, Last Time I Saw Him, with its track written Michael Masser and Pam Sawyer, was the follow-up to Dianna's No.1 Touch Me In The Morning. Masser, the Four Seasons' Bob Gaudio and Motown's own Ron Miller and Tom Baird contributed to the LP; one of Baird's tracks, "Turn Around, written by Harry Belafonte, was a holdover from a previously unreleased album.

Amazon.com essential recording
"Country rocks ... but bluegrass rules." If Ricky Skaggs was looking for a manifesto for his long-awaited bluegrass comeback, he couldn't have done much better than this disc's five-second preamble. Contractually barred from recording bluegrass for more than 12 years, Skaggs has obviously been champing at the bit. After the aforementioned introduction, he promptly unleashes an instrumental "Get Up John" that still has smoke wafting from my CD player. Dandy versions of "Little Maggie," "If I Lose," and "Rank Stranger" follow, to single out just a few. The musicianship here is uniformly superb, especially Skaggs's own mandolin playing, the guitar work of Bryan Sutton, Bobby Hicks's fiddling, and even a nice guest turn from Jerry Douglas. If there's any justice, the commercial success of Bluegrass Rules will send a strong message to record companies: Bluegrass music can and does sell records, especially when it's as flawlessly executed as Skaggs's latest. Let's just hope we don't have to wait as long for the next one. --Mary ParkCustomer Reviews:

The original is their best.......2007-05-08
Maybe it's because I heard this one first, but for me none of the other Jerky Boys cds lived up to this. Although this is by far the best by the legendary Jerky Boys I wouldn't call this the greatest prank phone call cd of all time. 'CKY Volume 2', although out of print and only available for ridiculously high prices on auction sites (it doesent even seem to avaiable here anymore), has a much better prank phone call disc in it. This is worth checking out as well though, you're definitely going to get a few laughs out of it.

The Birth Of The Crank-Call Boom.......2005-04-30
While crank-calling doesn't seem like a sophisticated style of humor, the Jerkys manage to elevate it to a vulgar art form. John Brennan (the Head Jerky, if you will) has a remarkable knack for improvisation and off-kilter remarks. You'll laugh as Frank Rizzo calls someone 'sizzlechest' or 'rubberneck,' even if you're not entirely sure what he's talking about. While the album is certainly vulgar, it's not a mindless swearing fest - there's some genuinely clever humor to be found here. And Sol Rosenberg is quite possibly the funniest crank-call character ever, although this particular album is definitely Rizzo's show.
This is a must-own album for comedy fans, provided you're not easily offended. Albums 2 and 3 are also great; everything afterwards is basically wretched.

Great concept, great pressing.......2007-05-27
If you love Live At The Apollo, Volume One, here's a super chance to hear the original studio recordings of many tracks found therein. Also, if you further enjoy the Soul-Funk period yielding sample-able tracks like "I'm Shook", then guess, what, check out the pleading, heart ballad here called "Waiting In Vain" - obviously a lyric-prototype.
A complete stand-alone cut is "The Bells" - a strange, gothic pleader, with James Brown weeping throughout the song - histrionics comparable to Domingo's in "Vesti La Guibba". If this doesn't shock your senses...then JB will have to loan you some Soul.
I was thrilled to hear "If You Want Me" for the first time. Maybe there's other longtime fans only familiar with it from the intro. at the '62 live Apollo record. It's a melodious sound amongst many easily described as *raw* - such as "Just You And Me, Darling", a impassioned, close to out of conrol soul-jazz-blues ballad.
"Oh, Baby Don't You weep" is the classic, of course based on a Gospel melody, which still shocks listeners toady. Yes, it's "Secular Gospel", if you will, or Gospel-*styled* R & B, whatever, James Brown's roots are strongly Gospel, so....let the Brother rapp.
The instru. "Can You Feel It" sets the stage for the much later "Dirty Harri"; "Devil's Den", another *first* for this fan, makes a nice connection to the incredible live version from the Instrumentals CD boxed-set.
I sure hope '63 to '66 follows; then '67 to '70. I loved collecting those King to Polydor, etc., 45rpms in those days and although I didn't buy my first JB single until '67, these early sounds serve as great forerunners of that revolutionary period I came in on.
I hope somewhere in this highminded release schedule, the very first CD of "Live at the Garden" comes our way.

Product Description
After The James Gang and before Rocky Mountain Way, Joe Walsh moved to Colorado and formed a short-lived group called Barnstorm with bassist Kenny Passarelli and drummer Joe Vitale. The result is this remarkable and intriguing 1972 album most often referred to as Walshs debut solo effort. What it truly is, though, is a richly textured acoustic/electric album that ebbs and flows with sounds and segues ranging from spooky to sweet, plaintive to psychedelic, from melodically enticing to ballbusting organ-guitar crunch rock. Its less than 40 minutes in length, but by its end the listener feels like he/she has been taken on a musical adventure of the best kind. The album didnt produce any hits per se, but charted in the Top 100, gave the world the first version of Turn To Stone, and resulted in a uniquely barnstorming national tour, wherein Joe Walsh reconfirmed if there ever was any doubt - his stature as a premiere musician. Joe Walsh next hit with Rocky Mountain Way and in 1975 added his unique energy to The Eagles, but this landmark early album is as good as anything the rocker did before or since. 1. Here We Go 2. Classic Walsh album finally available on CD again.......2006-03-13
The biggest song here "Turn to Stone" would show up again in a slightly inferior version on "So What?" but the original primordial monster is here. Featuring crunchy a guitar lick and a stunning guitar solo Walsh never got this experimental again. The album closes out with the acoustic guitar/haronica driven "Comin' Down" which provides a tranquil close to a magical album.
Like the 2005 Japanese re-release the magical sound qualty of the original recording has been retained. This is, in fact, the best the album has ever sounded (although honestly I can't compare it to the original Mobile Fidelity release since I never had it but have had the other import versions). Walsh never got better as a songwriter than here (although he came close with another couple of strong albums such as "The Smoker You Drink, the Player You Get"). A marvelous reissue, this classic album only lacks bonus tracks and outtakes which would have made this classy package complete.

Product Description
The New York Dolls didnt look punk. And when they were busy inventing the American version of what would eventually get called punk, it really didnt have a name. Despite being championed by critics from coast to coast, the Dolls had more of a critical than commercial impact. Too Much Too Soon is the bands second album, produced by Shadow Morton, who had the distinction of having worked with both the Shangri-Las and Vanilla Fudge. In some ways, it could be said that this album splits the difference between those two bands, plenty heavy, but with a melodic undercurrent. The Dolls were not only talented writers, they were skilled musical interpreters, covering not only the Cadets 1956 hit Stranded In The Jungle, but Gamble & Huffs more contemporary (Theres Gonna Be A) Showdown, which had been a hit for Archie Bell& The Drells in 1968. At thirty years remove, the album sounds a lot less radical than it did in 1974, but with the thigh-high boots and platform heels, the lipstick, the poodle-on-steroids hair, the snarling vocals, and the slashing guitars, they didnt just push the envelope; the Dolls threw the envelope in a wood chipper and peed on the shreds. This album has just plain been out of print too long. Happy to fax that up for you. Incidentally, a reformed version of the band (only 40% of the lineup on Too Much Too Soon is alive today, and neither of them are original Dolls) is out on tour and is planning a new album, so you may get to hear David Johansen (a/k/a Buster Pointdexter) perform some of these songs live in the not-too-distant future.Customer Reviews:

the tape is 10 times better.......2006-12-11
training school, after the beep leave a message and 1 of their staff would call you back.' When you hear the beep, you hear a dog growling, and the guy who does the voice to Frank Rizzo starts screaming to death while the dog is attacking him and growling. It's HILARIOUS, and I can't understand why it's only on the old-fashioned cassette-tape and not on the cd?
The Jerkys Strike Back.......2005-04-30
While some of the calls are repetitive or drag on too long ('Terrorist Pizza' and 'Sex Therapy', for example), most of the pranks here are gems. The hopeless, neurotic Sol Rosenberg really comes into his own here, with the hilarious 'Ball-Game Beating', 'Sol's Nude Beach,' and 'Sol's Phobia' calls. And Frank Rizzo is a riot as always. Both of these characters are voiced by John Brennan, who does most of the good material on the Jerky Boys albums. His sidekick Kamal is basically along for the ride, providing the occasional chuckle at best.
All in all, it's a very solid effort from the Jerkys, with a lot of quotable lines. I wouldn't pay $16-20 for it, but I'm sure you can get it used for a reasonable price.
They're tellin' me this, that and the other thing.......2004-11-25
Starting with the silly 'Pablo Honey', which sounds like the boys pranking a friend, it moves into classic Rizzo territory with 'Drinking Problem', where Frank indicates he's 'sick', but still questions if it's a problem with 'the drinking'.
It gets more vulgar and demented and hilarious with Sol asking about his warts (disgusting, but funny), Frank doing his thing on 'Volunteer', Kamal doing 'Terrorist Pizza' (perhaps funnier today, in a sick way?) All the characters get their time here, with Rizzo leading the pack, along with Sol ('I'm so...insecure!') to Jack Tors getting some demented air time to Kissel threatening the help, and of course a magician and his pet cobra.
The Jerky Boys are an aquired taste for sure, maybe it's a New York thing, or a vulgar thing, but they put out four very funny CDs before fading off with a fifth and sixth.
Be warned, it's vulgar and at times downright demented ('A Little Emergency', 'Sol's Nudist Beach') but it's very funny. Johnny B (Rizzo, Sol, Tors) is arguably a comic genius, and he pretty much WAS the Jerky Boys. Also, be warned, you may find yourself breaking out quotes from this collection years later.
Jerky Boys at their Best.......2004-09-21
Without giving too much away (so don't read on if you don't want to), some of the funniest stuff on this cd include genital warts, a REALLY crazy gay hairdresser, the hilarious mexican pico, Sol being afraid of his own shadow (hahaha), firing greased up potatoes through a tennis machine, a very humorous attempt on word play with "security service", and all kinds of other crazy stuff. Then there's "pizza terrorist" which leaves you amazed that they didnt end up getting arrested for doing it.
