Album Description
Errol Morris' adroitly assembled documentary film "The Fog of War" examines the career of Robert S. McNamara-- United States Secretary of Defense during the Kennedy and Johnson Administrations and whose tenure includes the Vietnam War and the Cuban Missile Crises. Combining excerpts from 26 hours of interviews with McNamara, archival footage, filmed recreations, as well as newly declassified White House recordings Morris' filmmaking illuminates a national past that ominously parallels the contemporary political present. Morris reveals what previous biographies failed to investigatethe relationship between McNamara and the infamous United States General Curtis LeMay and their involvement in the firebombing of Tokyoalong with 67 other Japanese citiesin 1945. Errol Morris states "The easy thing to say would be McNamara is a bad guy, he did all these bad things...the story is more complex and far more interesting than I imagined. The disturbing thing is that this was a man with real ethical dimension who did something terrible."As with music previously contributed to Morris' films, Philip Glass' score to "The Fog of War" effortlessly supports and enhances the film. The music, at times lyrical and at other times intense, deepens the horrifying images of war, highlighting the ambiguities of McNamara's characterand the consequences of his actions. Glass' music reinforces Morris' effort to understand the difficult ethical questions about governing and power raised by "The Fog of War".
Album Description

(G)lassy.......2007-07-28
Philip Glass belongs to this minute group of human beings. Fortunately for us, recorded music exists to make his work available to all and at any time. His soundtrack for the Errol Morros documentary on Robert McNamara is a lesson in how to create film music that unobtrusively ups the ante of the film it graces.
Glass' score both intensifies and accelerates the movie. It is nearly impossible for one not to experience a quickened pulse when Glass pulls together--of all things, a snare drum, a bit of low brass, and a flute.
Ah, that flute. It floats in and out of track after track, bereft of its customary vibrato, a penetrating, entrancing reminder that something serious is going on in the film. It is a masterful use of a small, metal pipe. At the command of Glass, the humble flute and its younger brother the piccolo punch considerably above their weight.
Who could write such a work? Probably only Philip Glass.
The movie's pretty good, too.
Excellent.......2006-08-09
The film was great, but the score made it outstanding. .......2004-08-05
Glass does something wonderful with this score; he gives war, uncertainty, doubt and fear a musical element, an audible personality that captures each bomb, burnt building and ominous threat in complete perfection, leaving your ears and your mind in a state of disbelief and amazement, thinking to yourself, "Wow, that music fits this segment like a glove."
The Thin Blue Line score made me an instant Glass fan but this score made me borderline Glass fanatic.
In my opinion, he surpasses Carter Burwell in the category of most unflinching film composer.......by a long shot.
A Great Soundtrack for a Great Film.......2004-05-24
ANOTHER GREAT GLASS SCORE!.......2004-03-31
This score has more variety than Glass's score for another Morris film, "The Thin Blue Line". By the way, will "The Thin Blue Line" ever get released on DVD?
The pieces are all short ones, which makes it an easier listen for Glass newbies I would imagine, but I would have preferred a few longer pieces- all the short pieces make it sound like "Glass fragments"- on some pieces once Glass gets going he has to come to a stop.
Still, I wholeheartedly recommend this wonderful CD!

Always good.......2006-01-28
sad that imagination it fades because everyone must get paid..........2005-12-24
there is absolutely nothing less than glowing that can be said about akron/family. musically & vocally: genius. (a word reserved for few) lyrically: simple yet poetic and intensely critical & crazy smart. their half of this split cd collects their recent newer material from their live set, which is phenomenal. it is quite different from their s/t debut (which doesn't disappoint). yes, there are 60s psychedelic riffs; yes, there is even a touch of 70s rocker rock. and yes, there is a lot of perverse partridge family harmonizing. for the kids, moments will sound a lot like a cross btw dungen + devendra + the partridge family + brian jonestown massacre, with a little bit of inexplicable, uncontainable, incomparable postpunk energy thrown in. (live, they do convey the pure power of mid90s swans shows: more than the gira connection. that still wall of sound effect, however, translates less in the recordings.) every a/f track is exquisite, differently. "future myth" should be played in nurseries. "dylan part ii" is melancholia in motion.
"oceanside" picks up the quieter sounds of their debut (a la "sorrow boy," a personal fave). "raising sparks," though, is the standout...and literally the show closer: not only the 60s riffs but the evangelical style raising of the ghost. if you're not dancing, even a little bit, you're just dead inside!
when combined with gira for the last 5 tracks, akron/family quietly breathe some life into the songs. despite what the other reviewer says, i don't think these tracks are much like the other angels discs... not even like "AoL sing other people" (which was gira w/ the boys, too). here gira seems to give them more room, they seem to be working more comfortably together, and it works. these tracks are darker than "sing" (even though that is *lyrically* not as cheery as i've seen other reviewers elsewhere believe it is), and is in a vein closer to "burning world" era swans meets velvet underground moments. yes, weird. the dylan cover contains most of the twang of other angels discs. it's totally anomalous & disruptive & doesn't belong here except for the sheer irony. but to hear gira do dylan is a nice centerpiece. so that track nicely splits apart (not segues) the 2 halves of the split. the cd rounds out w/ 4 tracks that are really stunning. the redo of "mother/father" takes what was only an ok original (tho do love jarboe) and actually transforms it into a whole new & quite incredible song. "come for my woman"--the last track--starts in a way closest to older angels material, but it has the a/f choir effect that is quite strange, and then it comes around to an end that wraps up the whole cd with a strangely powerful drone.
hopefully gira & the akron boys imaginations won't fade & they'll still get paid... buy this cd.
Darn Good/Waiting For More.......2005-11-24
"Raising the Sparks," for one, is just craziness. It starts off with a 60's/classic rock riff. About 1/3 of the way through, the song shifts into a looney, shouted melody that is incessant, despite its oddity. The last 1/3 of the song shifts to something else entirely, the kind of sweet, but off-kilter stuff one could've imagined would come from Brian Wilson.
With Gira's voice, a different mood takes hold. The cover of Dylan's "I Pity the Poor Immigrant" is very good and the performance of it very straight-forward. The version of Swans' "Mother/Father" is a totally different take on the song, originally sung by Jarboe, here it is Gira taking the lead with Akron/Family sounding like a choir of drunkards in Hell. Overall, nothing strikingly new or different for Gira, but as always, the quality is very high, the songs and performance very good. If you already like AoL, this will not disappoint.
If you're a fan of this stuff, check out these 2 bands: Palodine and Strange Rebel Frequency.

Good, but not great.......2003-06-01
My only problem is with the two old standards: Camptown Races and Oh! Susanna. I get the impression that the vocalist was trying to put his own "stamp" on these two very familiar tunes by accenting odd syllables or using strange intonations. At any rate, they ended up sounding cheesy so that my family members ended up making fun of the idiosyncracies introduced by the singer rather than singing along with the familiar words and melody. Oh! well...

If the black-vampire-hunter-as-action-hero genre isn't exactly oversaturated, it's hardly because of the strong star turns of Wesley Snipes in the film adaptations of the popular Blade graphic novels. This sequel to the '98 original may have a plot hole (or three), but Marco Beltrami takes the baton from the original vamp-hunting thriller's Mark Isham and delivers a rousing orchestral score full of dark corners and ominous percussive thunder. While the film's strong, club-mix-heavy song score emphasizes the story's contemporary setting, Beltrami instinctively gets the tale's gothic, sword 'n' sorcery roots, punctuating his rhythmic, suspenseful score with blasts of Barbarian-friendly blasts of brass. The title track fuses the composer's dramatic instincts with the back-to-the-'70s synth-swagger of electronica artist-producer Danny Saber, while "Nomack the Knife" is anything but playful, powered by a beat-heavy symphonic wallop that just might clear the dance floor. --Jerry McCulleyCustomer Reviews:

Look, for those of you coming to this in search for the songs appearing in the movie other than the composed pieces for the movie will find them on the release titled SOUNDTRACK. Yes, they did pull a big nasty on us with the first soundtrack release with Blade (not II). But if you [iago27sp, I understand your frustration, I can relate] would look a little closer..there is a soundtrack for Blade II, which does actually feature many of the songs appearing in the movie (yet cdnow requires searching for Blade 2, not Blade II, to find it)..take a look..they call this a SCORE for a reason =)
Good luck in your search (to everyone).

Album Description
Instrumental trio Green Light is drummer Adam Snow, bassist Dustin Hofsess, and guitarist Kevin Gill. This is a band that is coming from many different places musically. As a result, the Green Light audience is made up of an interesting variety of people: jazzers and rockers, the folky and the funky, hippies and computer programmers, the drunk and the devout... Each of them finds something about Green Light's music that draws them into the swirling vortex of energy that this band creates. The group draws from a deep well of influences. Some key points of departure are: the spirituality, intense energy, and exploratory improvisation of saxophone master John Coltrane; the raw blues-rock power, and psychedelic colors of Jimi Hendrix and Pink Floyd; the funky rhythmic tension and down- home soul of the Meters and Sly & the Family Stone; the groundbreaking jazz/rock/funk fusion of Miles Davis; the beautiful reggae grooves of Bob Marley & the Wailers. As well as drawing inspiration from these relatively well known artists, Green Light infuses their music with sounds from all over the globe, including African, Indian, Middle Eastern, Cuban, and Brazilian musical elements.
Green Light music is powerful, raw, soulful, mysterious, spontaneous, positive and life-affirming. This is music made for people who long for originality and unadulterated creativity. To experience Green Light is to be taken on a consciousness-expanding trip
