Using the same exotic, sly production style that made 2000's impressively resourceful Freaks & Icons such a hoot, Dzihan & Kamien's Gran Riserva is filled with sensual, unpredictable sounds and the occasional ass-shakin' beat. After a remix record that further explored the Freaks material (the hit-or-miss collection Refreaked), D&K have emerged with an entirely new set that slips and slides all over the map of trip-hop, lounge, house, and jazz. While the sunny, sexy "Basmati" plays around in the surf, other tracks, like "Drophere," live in a quieter, ambient space. In fact, the duo seem to have a hard time bringing their tone back up after breaking out the excellent but mellow vibe of "Where's Johny Sabatino." Happily, the gorgeous blip-pop loops of "Gutenmorgenduft" come along to give the record a sweet coda, though the track cries out for an extended remix. Mixing Kruder & Dorfmeister-like inventiveness with a restrained up vibe, Dzihan & Kamien create deep, thoughtful music that's fun at the same time. --Matthew Cooke

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Very cool CD!.......2007-07-03

I bought this after hearing the first track on a TV show, and the rest of the CD is equally great. My husband and I love to play it as background music when we are cooking and entertaining. It is upbeat, sophisticated, and yet soothing.

4 out of 5 stars Very Cool.......2006-02-28

Very laid back and nice use of a variety of instrumentation, voices and samples. Excellent evening city driving music!

3 out of 5 stars Mostly Good, But a Couple Annoying Tracks.......2006-02-08

If you enjoyed Dzihan & Kamien's previous album, "Freaks and Icons," then you will find this CD to be worth tracking down. Most of it carries on in the same vein of smooth, jazz-inflected downtempo chillout tracks that these guys are known for, with their usual splash of middle-eastern instrumentation in the back of the mix to keep things interesting. I usually play this kind of music in the background while I do database work because it's pleasant and relaxing, and nondescript enough so that it isn't distracting.

However, their first album is still the better of the two because the quality of the songs throughout that disc is more consistent. By contrast, Gran Riserva has its high points, and a couple of notable low ones: namely, the tracks featuring a vocalist named Ma Dita. The decision to include these two tracks ("Drophere" and "Thrill") is unfortunate, because she is such an embarrassingly poor singer, and I find myself scrambling to hit the skip-forward button every time these songs come on. Really guys, you could've done better. Minus one star for each of those tracks, but the rest of the disc is solid.

1 out of 5 stars techno trash-- it's all tooo easy.......2005-09-19

I heard one song on the internet and bought the CD. Now I wish I hadn't. It sounded alright the first time around, but this CD just sounds a little bit worse each time I listen to it. Next time my music-savvy, hip friends in Austin throw a euro-trash, techno party, I'll be ready....

5 out of 5 stars wow.......2005-06-16

This is a classic album and a must have for all downtempo listeners. It's a flexible album, with oriental samples to great electronic twists.

The album features amazing vocals (Daniela, Ma Dita or Misirli Ahmet) and kicks the beat like no other when it's time. It's hard to describe, you gotta listen to it. Can't wait for more of D&K's stuff.

Already own the entire Kruder & Dorfmeister disography? No worries. The city of Vienna is sending more blunted beats your way in the form of Dzhian and Kamien. The downbeat capital's latest exports are much more than K&D clones, however. This is their own special brand of Sunday morning headfunk. Turkish-flavored tracks such as "Slowhand Hussein" and "Just You & I" open the Outcaste crew's bag of table tricks and let it breathe on the back porch of the Cafe del Mar. The jazz-laced "Where Are We?" and "After" imagine the Thievery Corporation out of their trademark debonair threads and in rainbow wigs and clown shoes. Dzihan & Kamien even try their hand at slightly more traditional pop structures on "Smile," in which an Edie Brickell-ish vocalist trips over a shifty typerwriter-as-rhythm-track beat. Equal parts quirk, groove, and experimentation make a pretty savory tonic. --Bob Michaels

3 out of 5 stars "Freaks" Is A Footrest.......2007-05-10

The Austrian-based duo of dZihan and Kamien have been around now for almost a decade, and not without good reason. They're certainly good at what they do, and have been since they were releasing cuts under the name MC Sultan.

I say they're good, and I say "at what they do," because they aren't really all that great, and "what they do" never really changes. They've been compared to Thievery Corporation, which is fair, since both groups work with downtempo lounge that borders on jazz house. But whereas Thievery Corporation incorporates not just experimentation but also a wide sampling of cultural flavors and flourishes, dZihan and Kamien prefer to keep it low-key and unassuming.

Fine. Lounge music is by its nature low-key and unassuming, but that doesn't mean it shouldn't also be inventive or diverse. For a couple of guys with such international tastes (born in Germany, raised in Switzerland, claim to prefer Turkish/Arabic music, perform mostly in European clubs), this album hits a plateau of placidity and plays itself out there.

Don't get me wrong, it's not bad, and for the soft, flapping curtains of the lounge genre, it's a workhorse of a record. Several of the songs ("Just You & I" and "Slowhand Hussein" in particular) are pretty impressionable, knee-quaking, aggressively laid-back. And, as I said, none of them could be called bad, per se.

But, much like the mostly-milquetoast Cafe Del Mar series, these guys aren't really aspiring for much more than an inspiration to nap-time, and even that is done a little unevenly; you've got everything from fusion jazz ("Where Are We?"), to electronic pillow talk ("Spacewater"), to synthetic pop ("Smile"). It's a decent collection, even if it doesn't mesh well, and it's got its share of shakes and sighs, but, when all is said and done, there's no "freak" here to be found, and certainly no "icons."

5 out of 5 stars Infectiously cool..........2005-01-01

In amongst the huge amount of distinctly second-rate laid-back electronica and chill-out music that's out there are some real hidden gems. And here's one... an album full of cleverly arranged, addictive beats that will grab repeated space on your CD player. Why? Well, despite its distinctly "tacky" cover, "Freaks & Icons" is in fact one of the coolest albums around... closer to Thievery Corporation than Kruder & Dorfmeister, but with the same beautifully crafted, multi-layered instrumentation of their more popular peers, it incorporates East European & Asian influences into familiar, rock-solid jazz-funk and "chill out" structures that, seemingly effortlessly, roll along from start to finish. After a couple of times through, the infectious melodic "hooks" that underpin virtually every track take hold and, before you know it, you're hitting the replay button yet again.

3 out of 5 stars It's a Small World Afterall.......2004-09-16

Freaks & Icons marked the beginning of Six Degrees Records' shift away from world fusion music (sigh) into nu-jazz. Dzihan & Kamien are a very solid downtempo act with excellent beats and atmospheric grooves, but to call it world-influenced is a bit of a stretch. I'd love to play you all some REALLY world-influenced downtempo music. Ok, "Dabudei" has that Ibiza groove, but aside from that, this album is standard-issue Anglo lounge. Which is not to say it isn't very nice. It is. But please, don't call it "eastern." I could play you some REAL Eastern downtempo you'll die for.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderfully smooth.......2003-12-20

The tracks flow effortlessly from beginning to end, without a filler song in the bunch. After listening a few times you will never have the, "ugh, I hate the beat on the this" problem that plagues some lesser-quality dubby bands.

Highlights, after listening to the CD for awhile, are pretty much every song. I became really interested in dZihan & Kamien after hearing the song "Streets of Istanbul," though, which is a good introduction to the CD. "Slowhand Hussein" is also another good string-tinged tune.

These beats are great for studying to or falling asleep - this CD was a heavy part of the soundtrack of my just-finished semester of college, and it was good soundtrack music!

5 out of 5 stars I am HOOKED!.......2003-11-05

I can't say enough about the funky and fantastic mood that dZihan and Kamien's music puts me in! I LOVE this stuff! Even my 7 year old daughter is into their groove. If your into letting music make your mood, or you just want to just chill out to some groovy tunes, give them a try! You'll be glad you did. Oh, and dZihan and Kamien, if you ever read this, you guys rule! Your tunes have more than saved my sanity in several stressfull situations, thank you!!

Following two sensational studio albums, the Vienna-based electronica chill-meisters are live and organic here. Dzihan's keyboards and Kamien's guitars and samples are heard at the crest of a hip one-world sonic universe, supported by a hand-picked battalion of top-notch international talent. Vocalists Ma. Dita (performing in English) and Özden Öksüz, DJ "Mangito" Mango, and super-percussionist Sammy Figueroa (who has played with Miles Davis, Charles Mingus, John Scofield, Stevie Wonder, and David Bowie---you can't get much cooler than that) are flanked by smoldering Turkish drummers, strings, reeds, and brass. The result resembles a late-night love-in between Isaac Hayes (wah-wah firmly in place), Barry White, retro Latin jazz, classic Middle-Eastern massed-violin vamps, and Pink Floyd, augmented by white-hot trumpet solos and filigreed Islamic calls to prayer. The album includes a bonus disc of remix tracks, wherein "Drophere" undergoes three treatments while "Slibdub," "Stiff Jazz," and "Ford Transit" reveal glimmering new facets. --Christina Roden

Album Description

This stunning live album is one of those rare moments when a producer duo, well known from the electronic club genre prove that it is possible to cross the border into the world of performing live with real instruments. Live in Vienna grew out of dZihan & Kamien's desire to do something special for the release party for their last studio CD, Gran Riserva. With the help of the Austrian government, 22 people were gathered on stage at Porgy and Bess, one of the most famous jazz clubs in Vienna. Master musicians from Turkey to Miami formed a "dreamteam" to translate the dZihan & Kamien sound into an orchestral performance featuring the downtempo duo's signature blend of cool jazz, dancefloor beats and Eastern strings.

The North American version of this release features a special bonus disc of dZihan & Kamien remixes- many of which have been previously unavailable in this country.

4 out of 5 stars This is a lot of music !!! Deep and Good..........2005-06-22

The chillout/downtempo/electronic music gurus go live. WOW !

This is a deep album from the MASTERS D&K with an incredible array of talented musicians that make this masterpiece a phenomenal purchase. There is so much music in here that is difficult to describe. There's funky bass (if you're a bass player, you gotta have this CD), strings, horns, insane percussion (unreal), sexy vocals (great talented singers), all beautifully combined with that electronica sound D&K are known for.

World Music? Yes.
Jazz? Yes.
Electronic Downtempo/Chillout? Yes.
Funk? Yes.

Boring? NEVER !

Fact is, that after listening to this you will be wondering if this is the original D&K who put this orchestra together to make these tracks sound so organic or if this is a really talented jazz jam band. This CD is so good, it won't be out of rotation for a very very long time... This is the one live album that makes you wish you'd been there to see it with your own eyes...

UPDATE: After a full year with this CD, I have to upgrade it to a 5-star rating.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible Live CD!.......2005-03-21

First off I have to say that I am usually not a big fan of live concert CD's. I am a huge live music fan, but generally I find the energy of a great concert lost in traslation to CD. Not so with this little wonder! I have heard little bits of Dzihan & Kamien on various Six Degrees compilations over the years, but I was wholly unprepared for the absolute monstrosity of the musicians and arrangements on this CD. As a musician I know how difficult it is to achieve tight arrangements and subtle dynamics with a large group of musicians. Apparently I have totally underestimated these guys... D & K are great musicians in their own right and they have assembled the tightest, heaviest, tastiest "orchestra" on the planet. An incredible feat in itself, but to bring their catalog of material to such heights as this is simply astounding. Rhythm, strings, horns, percussion, guitars, DJ, vocals, this band has absolutely no weak links. All these songs are great.. I keep thinking I am going to get sick of this but it's been stuck in the changer for almost six months with no signs of leaving the "A" rotation. I am wearing holes in the carpet dancing to it. I really hope this piece of work doesn't fall through the cracks between the genres that it covers, because it truly transcends mere jazz, trip-hop, electronica, funk, and worldbeat. I am really surprised that this has not completely blown up because it is HUGE. I remain hopeful that we will get some sort of tour out of these guys, for now I will just turn it up and imagine...

5 out of 5 stars The things you find..........2004-12-01

I got this on the recommendation of Amazon, who sent me an email telling me of its release. I took a gamble, thinking that if it was no good, I could palm it off as a Christmas present to some drum and bass fanatic.
The truth is, this CD isn't going anywhere in a hurry. From the first track, I heard the bass loud, the drums clear and the rest of the band tight. From then on, it just got better as brass licks and other ostinatos started flying about driving and authoritive percussion and bass lines.
This CD has already earned a spot up there with the Nightmares on Wax and Thievery Corporation collection. The thing that sets this one apart is that it is a fun CD. NOW and T.C are polished, and absolutely brilliant at their game, but this CD really reminds me of what playing music is about. It ain't about getting up in front of thousands of people and showing them how good you are, but it's more about getting together with the intention of going to another place. The musicianship on this CD certainly takes the crowd/listener there, and I would be surprised if the muso's themselves were not moved also. This is truly a brilliant CD if you like music. There's no star of the show, no big name single to draw you in. Track 1 is as good as the middle of the album, and the middle is as good as the end. If you're into groove, trip hop, or just plain good music played with passion, then this CD will not dissapoint you. I for one will look for more of this outfit's work!

4 out of 5 stars Live and better than ever!.......2004-09-17

Dzihan and Kamien have always drawn comparissons to that "other" Vienna act you may have heard about...Kruder and Dorfmeister. Both crews are mutual fans of each others work and have even remixed tracks for each other. I've always thought the comparissons were a little bit off but here on their first live album, D & K really come into their own. While on their studio albums things can tend to be a little too electronic for a K & D comparisson, on "Live" we see D & K strip things down and present tracks from their last studio album with a full band and even a string section! The results? By stripping back the sounds and creating a more organic feel, D & K's songs sound more alive than ever before! As if this werent enough, for the North American release, D & K have included a bonus disc of tracks from their last album remixed by the likes of Richard Dorfmeister & Rodney Hunter and Howie B as well as a rework by themselves as well. This package is not to be missed if your a fan of smooth nu-jazz and funk. D & K may live up to those K & D comparissons yet!

Eight tracks from Dzihan & Kamien's debut album get the subtlest of rerubs. No major missteps here, but then again neither are there any mind-blowing revolutions, with most of the remixers opting for slight changes over complete overhauls. Fauna Flash inject a little adrenaline into "Just You & I." Hefner unfortunately steers the proceedings in the other direction with a lethargic reading of "Slowhand Hussein." Eddy & Dus keep the pop structure of "Smile" mostly intact, simply throwing in a little extra mellow percussion, while Fox 42 engage in a slightly more adventurous, trancier deconstruction of the same track. At Jazz bring "After" out of the humid confines of the R&B club and into the vast skies of the outback. Mum are the only folks who truly get their freak on, reducing "Streets of Istanbul" to a tapestry of human groans and low bass burps. Throw in two agreeable Dzihan & Kamien tracks not available on the original record and you've got yourself almost an hour of dependable, if not definitive, downtempo. --Bob Michaels

Album Description

An inspired set of remixes from Vienna-based dZihan & Kamien's Freaks & Icons opus. Remixers include UFO, Hefner and Atjazz. The moods range from thumping minimalism through sensual Latin vibes and jazzy abstractions, along with subtle infusions of Turkish tribal flavor. Capped with a previously unreleased bonus track from dZihan & Kamien, Refreaked sequences its infectious beats and vibrant melodies to stunning effect

4 out of 5 stars good.......2002-07-30

not great. not much better than the first one, but good listening.

2 out of 5 stars robbing the tracks of their mystery.......2001-07-24

Freaks and Icons was a complex, deep album: at the same time funky, dubby, playful, and atmospheric. Here the tracks have been robbed of much of their flavor, reduced to somewhat sterile beats and jazzy cliches. Too many of the Middle Eastern samples have been deleted from the mixes by remixers who might understand dance music but obviously don't understand the subtle middle-eastern touches which graced Freaks and Icons. The result is that as you listen to each song you notice how much more you prefer the original and wonder why on God's earth somebody was allowed to mess it up so badly? Its a shame because with appropriate remixers who understand world dance music - say Talvin Singh, Loop Guru, Transglobal Underground, or downtempo specialists like K&D or Kid Loco a remix LP could have worked. One absolutely great track, however, the previously unreleased and blessedly unremixed 2 Minutes reveals the vast difference between Dzihan and Kamien's own work and the hack remixes on the compilation....

4 out of 5 stars Refreaked=Remixed.......2001-03-15

Instead of "new" material, this is the remixes from Freaks&Icons with the likes of UFO, Hefner, AtJazz, Mum, etc. Very limited vocals, mostly taking splinters of Freaks&Icons and making jazzy instrumentals out of them. Everything is remixed enough that it sounds new, which works for me, but nothing really outshines its original. It avoids being monotonous yet sounds better as background music. Essential only to people like me who can't get enough from Vienna. Definitely not an intro album (get Freaks&Icons first), but still enjoyable.

This is a fine example of the variations that can be made using the same vocal throughout...this is an excellent and very enjoyable vocal and the various re mixes make the most of it. The various remixes of the tune take us through several moods, with a latin feel on one and a deep dub feel to another, the next to last track is quite dark and brings an unexpected slant to the song.
Im happy to play the whole c d ,its joined my FAVOURITES pile

5 out of 5 stars Clever remixes of an addictive tune.......2001-08-14

"Smile", from dZihan & Kamien's Freaks & Icons full-length, is a trippy little pop song with a Billie Holiday-meets-Björk vocal. In addition to the album version, this disc contains four remixes. The "Eddy & Dus Kontrapunkt Mix" give it a broken beat spin, the "Aromabar Remix" does it roots dub stylee, the Cycles Remix has a jazzy trip-hop feel, and the "Ninebar Remix" is a reprise of the LP version from deep space.

I really enjoy this album. It's a mix of both chill out and dance tracks. I love how the African rythms are mixed with electronica. A great buy, you won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Ambient blend of beats and hooks.......2000-11-03

I just picked up "Freaks & Icons" and was immediately hooked. It's really ambient while at the same time it avoids blandness and comes out textured and emotional. There are many good songs on the CD. I highly recommend this title!

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite album for driving FAST!.......2005-06-07

I heard DZihan & Kamien's music from public radio kcrw in Los Angeles, I am just glad I bought the CD right away. The one I have is the release by six degree record. Actually I just checked their website, this CD go for $14.99. This is music for the 21 centurey, pure joy.

5 out of 5 stars If you like groovy downtempo..........2002-09-17

...then you'll dig this one. Probably better than the original, Freaks & Icons, although that album certainly has its merits as well. A must for folks who like K&D, Tosca, Thievery Corp. etc. Give it a listen and you'll probably want it.
