Since rededicating himself in 1997 to bluegrass, the music into which he was born, Kentucky native son Ricky Skaggs has re-established himself as one of the most talented and inspired figures in the music's immensely crowded front ranks. History of the Future is not as thematically ambitious as previous releases, such as the 2000 tribute Big Mon: The Songs of Bill Monroe. Instead, it's an energetic hodgepodge of bluegrass oldies such as "Shady Grove" and "Mother's Only Sleeping" and a handful of fine new songs, including the Paul Overstreet-penned "Halfway Home Café," "One Way Track" (an early Skaggs original dusted off from his long-gone days in the band Boone Creek), and "Too Far Down to Fall," in which Skaggs and his band catch a remarkable groove. As overly familiar as some of these bluegrass classics are, they nonetheless demonstrate what a powerhouse supergroup Skaggs has assembled in Kentucky Thunder. The band even manages to supercharge moldy oldies such as "Rollin' in My Sweet Baby's Arms" and "Dim Lights, Thick Smoke, and Loud Music"--subtly redefining them for the 21st century. --Bob Allen

5 out of 5 stars Perfectly bluegrass.......2003-06-13

Put the chitlins on, Pa. Butter up the cornbread, I'm coming home for supper. Tell that boy Ricky to dust off his mandolin. Mercy, it's pure stuff.

5 out of 5 stars Geez...this guy is INCREDIBLE!.......2002-10-07

The hallmark of Ricky Skaggs music is flawless top shelf bluegrass taken to the absolute limits of perfection and this CD is no exception. The guy sings and plays the mandolin with effortless perfection. The old school bluegrass standards on this CD take on a fresh flavor and if you're a mandolin lover, you'll probably wear the 50,000 mile warrenty off this CD the first week.

5 out of 5 stars Skaggs Offers Another Impeccable Bluegrass Album.......2002-04-27

Skagg's latest release has a little of everything: Something old (terrific arrangment of the chestnut "Shady Grove"), something new (the instrumental tribute to his Celtic roots "The Road to Spencer"), something borrowed (a remake of his "One Way Track" from his Boone Creek days) and something blue (the tragic lost love of "Too Far Down to Fall"--complete with a bass line borrowed from "These Boots Are Made for Walkin'").

Skaggs is still one of the brightest stars in bluegrass music today and this album is a welcome addition to any fan's collection who appreciates solid picking and singing. Some critics have argued how many more renditions do we need of "Sawin' on the Strings" or "Roll In My Sweet Baby's Arms." My answer is at least one more if Ricky Skaggs is involved with the project. If I had to single out one word to describe Skaggs' music, it would be "integrity." HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

5 out of 5 stars Wow.......2002-04-22

What an excellent CD! His best ever. I was captivated from the very beginning with the opening bars of "Shady Grove". Ricky and his band absolutely smoke on this cut and it sets the tone of great musicianship for the entire album. The band switches gears from smoking on "Shady Grove" to an Irish feel on the fabulous "Road to Spencer". And the thought provoking lyrics to "Half Way Home Cafe" really cut like a knife.

This CD will be one that you play over and over and is proof that even though Ricky "went country" for a number of years he did not forget how to do it. Helping his cause is the fact, that unlike many bluegrass artists, he has the money and commands the fees that allow him to hire some of the best young pickers in the business as well as being able to afford ample studio time. This can't hurt, but the final product is what counts. And this album has that great artistry and feeling that can't be bought.

5 out of 5 stars Histoy of the Future.......2002-02-22

Ricky and his band are top notch musicians and have magawatts of energy! This is a great toe-tapping music!

Thank god for re-issues. Otherwise the music would get lost to the ether.

The Microscopic Septet created my late-night underground soundtrack in the 1980s. No matter where I went, there they were. This jazz band (which happened to masticate, swallow, digest & excrete every other kind of music in its path) made the hoppingest, funniest, hottest music around. It was endless; every week they had new tunes. Each was a surprise, each was a joy.

Just read the titles. Then download the samples.

There is nothing else like this out there. You have to go out towards Mingus & Ellington, then take a sharp turn at Spike Jones and Slim Gaillard, and then consider everything that happened between then and now.

And now we have some of it again. For those of you who have been nursing along your wornout LPs, these CDs are clean & re-mastered, they include 8 (8!) extra tunes from the Let's Flip! live session. And the part 2 of this re-release (surrealistic swing) has some of the tunes recorded when John Zorn filled the alto chair, and, thank goodness, the never-released commercial oddity "You Know What You Know" (which is as hip and unlikely and commercial as Beefheart's Clear Spot).

Sure, it includes versions of a well-known over-ubiquitous radio theme, but they are at the end of the CD and if that's what brought you to this music, then bless it.

5 out of 5 stars From Music To Cover.......2005-05-07

I think this is definately one of Flukes finer moments. Every track glistens with pure uniqueness. That and the fact that the brilliant artwork by David Bethell "Just Your Average Second On This Planet" reminds me so much of another of my favourite albums, namely The Human Leagues' "Reproduction" (which really is electronic music at it's finest) can't be a bad thing.

5 out of 5 stars Best Cuts for EDM Fans.......2005-04-23

I'm going to have to disagree with the previous reviewer on this one. Progressive History X is very different from the British import Progressive History XXX (I should know... I have both). There is only one song that is on both compilations. The rest are either completely different tracks taken from the different albums or very different sounding remixes. As a matter of fact if you get both (like I did... didn't originally intend to... long story) you can almost get complete coverage of the best of what Fluke has to offer.

Think of it this way. Progressive History XXX is for the hard core Fluke collector who wants to hear the early works that never made it to CD, the artful album cuts and the rare remixes. Progressive History X is for the fan who first listened to Atom Bomb or some other song from the Risotto album on some dance floor and wants more of those infectious beats.

Basically X has tracks and remixes that run the gamut of Fluke's more popular dance tracks. Most of the music comes from the three albums Six Wheels on my Wagon, Oto and Risotto. But don't get discouraged if you already have any of these albums. PH X is still worth a look. Why you may ask? Because almost all of the songs are either extended cuts of the original music or remixes. Granted extended cut can mean just ten more seconds, but believe me it's nice to hear.

These are dance tracks. No doubt about it. If you ever wondered about what people have been talking about with Fluke having that "Underworld sound" this CD will let you in on it. Driving beats with interesting spurts of ambience and grooves woven all around. Some comments on some tracks:

THUMPER - This is the song you will find on both PH X and XXX. Identical on both. Not bad for a first cut in the late 80's. Fluke definitely had a more pop sound at this time.

PHILLY - Very different mix than XXX. This is the song that put Fluke on the map in England. It snappy and it's easy to see it be a club hit back in the day, but its age is definitely beginning to show.

ELECTRIC GUITAR and GROOVY FEELING - Some of the best songs from Six Wheels on my Wagon. Very addictive dance grooves on these. These cuts are the ones that are slightly longer than their album counterparts and mixed slightly different. In my opinion they are marginally better than the originals.

BUBBLE, BULLET and TOSH - Definitely remixes. Definitely Underworld style remixes. Definitely fun to dance or groove to. Can't say they are better than the originals (actually the Tosh remix IS better in my opinion), but I can say they I really like them.

ATOM BOMB (Atomix 1)- This is supposed to be a remix, but it sounds more like a remaster of the original cut. For all of you Risotto owners out there this is the one song on this compilation that won't give you much of anything different.

ABSURD (Whitewash) - The coolest remix you will find of this song. The album is almost worth buying for this one alone.

If you are completely new to Fluke and want more there are two albums you must have. Risotto and Progressive History X. This will get you maximum bang for your EDM buck with practically zero repeat tracks. Those of you who own Progressive History XXX and don't have Otto or Six Wheels on my Wagon I recommend getting X to fill out your collection as well.

Let me just say this first: I love Fluke. However, I have a problem with Fluke's U.S. representaion on Astralwerks. This comp of their work is so unbelievably shallow, Astralwerks should be ashamed at having it in their catalogue. This disc is actually a cut-down compilation from a 3 cd compilation called "Progressive History XXX" that was released in Great Britain. You can probably guess which one is worth buying. The box set has a total of 32 songs on it, ranging from early "Blighty" and "Peel Sessions" works, to some tunes from "6 Wheels", "Oto", and "Risotto". The real gem on the 3 disc set is the disc of remixes...most have been unavailable for years. To be honest, I only gave this disc 3 stars because it has Fluke's name on it...seek out the import, and you will be rewarded.

4 out of 5 stars An index of metals.......2001-10-16

While many of the trio's contemporaries, for example, Underworld, Chemical Brothers and 808 State, have crossed over into commercial territory, with records in the pop charts all around the world and interviews in the press, Fluke remain very much a mystery. Maybe they shouldn't have hidden themselves behind their brilliantly designed cover artworks, maybe their singles suffered from bad promotion, distribution and missing radio airplay - two things are for sure: Fluke have released a string of great dance tracks throughout the '90s, and their 1997 outing "Risotto" is regarded as one of the best electronica albums of the decade. And now, just when I expected to hear some new material from the band, their label decides to release "Progressive history X", a compilation of singles, album tracks, alternative versions and remixes. It's obviously a collection for the newly interested more than anyone else - if you want to have a convenient introduction to the band, then this disc is the best place to go. It opens with the previously unavailable "Thumper!", a fairly laid-back and pop-oriented piece with funky, almost Caribbean-type rhythms and childish vocal samples. Nice, but not exactly indispensable. One of the most interesting pieces of this compilation and still Fluke's most progressive track is the 7-minute arena-rock/acid house masterpiece "Philly", originally released in 1990. Now look, where would Underworld be without Fluke's influence? Still playing ponderous pseudo-blues rock like "Change the weather" or "Underneath the radar"? By the time Fluke released their second proper album, "Six wheels..", however, the trio's approach had shifted away from their early cross-over sound to a straighter and more simple approach - clean and clinical and perfect for the dancefloor, as "Slid", "Electric guitar" and "Groovy feeling" prove. With their third album, "Oto", Fluke thankfully began to branch out again and to adopt various other styles, ranging from dubby basslines to eerie ambient sounds, but most importantly, they added some memorable vocals and intriguing lyrics to their music. The three tracks from this era which are included here - "Bubble", "Bullet" and "Tosh" - were extensively remixed for their single/EP appearances and do not have much in common with the original album versions. "Bullet" comes up with much more powerful and rougher beats, but the real highlight and one of my all-time favorite dancefloor tunes is the remix of "Tosh", which is built on a fluid layer of incredibly forceful, arpeggiated sequencer riffs and equally driving techno beats. If you thought Underworld's "Cowgirl" was engaging enough, then this will blow you away. Finally, we have a selection of tracks and remixes from Fluke's most recent and overall most consistent album, "Risotto": "Atom bomb" introduces the quite hard-edged sound of the band's late-'90s output, not too dissimilar from the material released by other "big-beat" outfits at that time. While these latter-day cuts are quite suitable for single release as well, they really should be enjoyed as part of the album "Risotto", where one track seamlessly segues into the next and makes for a continuous and fascinating listening experience. Overall, it would have been nice if this disc would sport a few more tracks from Fluke's early days, simply because many of their early-'90s albums, singles and EPs have gone out of print. Given the fact that little information ever appears on the group, the booklet unfortunately doesn't provide any comments on what Fluke achieved in the eyes of each member, how the trio came together, or what the tracks/lyrics the band composed were about. Despite these flaws and the rather pedestrian packaging of the album, it really is essential for anyone with a genuine interest in UK dance music and, as such, comes highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Send new album please.......2001-08-27

This album features chronologically (thumper was flukes first big 12",wasn't technically published till 2001) music from every area of fluke's carrer. Going all the way back to pre-hype times with tracks from 90-91, all the way up to the "atomic bombing" of risotto. The tracks are all great and all of them hold up to the test of time, suprisingly. The older stuff sounds much more like "dubnobasswithmy..." era Underworld. You can hear some cheap keyboard sounds here and there, but compared to other early 90's techno, even the earlier stuff sounds more 94 than 91, proving that stayed ahead of the times. As for how well it sound sright now, If your an ("american") fan of fluke the latter tracks are probably a must have. They are all pretty much imports, and unless your diehard just not worth importing all those cd's. The middle tracks are pretty good if you, but a little dated, like I mentioned early underworld fans should enjoy them. All the track included are of the more "single" vocal style, not much in the way of the more chilled out instrumentals like on risotto. I reccomend this mostly to fans of Risotto who just want a little more fluke in thier collection. here is the full track mix Thumper (Original Mix) Philly (Jamorphous) Slid (Glid) Electric Guitar (Humbucker) Groovy Feeling (Make Mine a 99) Bubble (Speechbubble) UBullet (Bullion) Tosh (Gosh) Atom Bomb (Atomix 1) Absurd (Whitewash) Squirt (Rissotto Vox)

2 out of 5 stars History? Ok - but bland.......2006-12-17

History of Trance is not Acosta's good pieces. I really liked Acosta with the release of 'touched' even as people describe the CD quality as being poor. Wit this mix, though, I am begining to feel as if he is just winging it. granted I am more tuned to the harder and progressive style trance, Acosta's newer trance mixes seem generic and bland. Jon Secadas song is ruined with Acostas mix. I though this song would be killer, instead it is a generic beat, (which tries to sound'hard') behind Secada's wonderful song. Not terrible, but too bad.

4 out of 5 stars A Nice Collection.......2006-03-09

As a relative newcomer to the genre, I find this collection useful, easy to listen to, and enjoyable. While I am not an expert in this style, I do believe that this is a solid collection and recommend it to anyone who wants to have at his or her disposal a variety of Trance material.

5 out of 5 stars Dont you get it?.......2006-02-12

For those who say this doesn't sound like george. LOOOOKKK AT The TITLE. He did a wonderful job of hitting the high spots of Trance Music and its history. This is one of the few cd's thats has the listenability that you can keep in your cd changer for months without taking out.

There is even some anthems that i missed and i have been into trance since 95.

All in all this cd is exactly what it says "The History of Trance".

Buy,Enjoy and thank me later.;-)

4 out of 5 stars Bad title.......2005-11-20

I don't know if you could really call this a history when it's more of a chronicle of a specific point in time. Namely in and around 1998. Regardless of the name, it still is a pretty good mix. Numerous hits make up the content mixed together by George Acosta, who doesn't necessarily shine in this one. Anyone familiar with the dj's work would agree with me that this compilation doesn't feel like him. In fact, if you didn't know any better you would just assume it was some unknown dj doing their job at some club...back in and around 1998. It's great for parties when you want some background music or when you just wanna hear a nice collection of great "classics"...of, or around, 1998. Most definitely not a history though.

3 out of 5 stars Mediocre,not at all what I expected.......2005-05-10

When I first heard this was coming out,I was overjoyed because anything by Acosta is usually nothing but the best.In this case, however;I was dissapointed because this is rather dull and boring material(with the exception of a few songs.)Cd 1 is super bland ,having only 2 or 3 good songs towards the end.Cd 2 has about 4 or 5 including the awesome "Just Another Day"remix with John Secada. To begin with, trance anthems are for newbies and way too commercialized.Commercial crap =ATB,New Tiesto, etc.Sadly it seems as if Acosta rushed to get this on store shelves.Dont buy this unless you are a newbie,Acosta has plenty of other good albums like "Awake and "Lost World."

5 out of 5 stars Give this one a chance to grow on you.......2006-01-04

It often takes a few listens for an album to grow on me, but this one set a record. It KEPT growing on me with every listen for about a year, until it became a huge favorite. Echolyn is a prog-rock band out of Pennsylvania that over the last 15 years has gradually gone from having more chops than ideas to being the best hope for the future of prog. "Mei" is a single 50-minute album-length song, in the footsteps of "Thick As a Brick". And much as I love Tull's album, "Mei" is better. The album is full of alternating fast and slow sections, with most musical themes getting reprised somewhere along the way. The fast sections rock harder than anything Echolyn had previously recorded, though not as much as 2005's "The End Is Beautiful". William Barnes continues the great clean, crisp production he provided on 2000's "Cowboy Poems Free." Lyrically, the band's website bills "Mei" as "...a combination of Jack Kerouac's 'On the Road' and Dante Alighieri's 'Inferno'". On "Cowboy Poems", keyboardist Chris Buzby made the decision that he was going to minimize his use of synthesizers in favor of electic piano and organ, and that choice helps to give "Mei" a timeless feel. There is none of the neo-prog excess of earlier albums like "As the World", though Echolyn still loves to change time signatures. "Mei" and "Cowboy Poems Free" are the two best post-1980 progressive rock albums I've heard. By anyone. I own about a thousand albums, and "Mei" is hovering on the fringes of my all-time Top 10.

4 out of 5 stars check it out!!!!.......2006-10-21

Verry good muzic....... The only thing that I would like to see a change in is the vocal volume, a little low for me. But the band is fu*#ing great. Well worth the money....

5 out of 5 stars Nokturnal Mortum Again Achieve Perfection.......2005-09-25

Making a perfect album is damn near impossible to do, but this is the second of their 3 absolutely breathtakingly perfect cds (the others being Goat Horns and Weltanschauung).

This is a re-release of older material but it still holds up amazingly well. Great guitars and astonishingly gorgeous keyboards. Just listen to Perun's Celestial Silver. That is one of the greatest songs ever made. Their cover of Return Of The Vampire Lord is another perfect track.

If you havent gotten this cd yet, buy it now! You sure as hell wont regret it!

5 out of 5 stars Just as Good, if not Better Than "Goat Horns"!.......2005-03-14

Well, NM did it again, and amazed me with another prime slab of symphonic/folk black metal. While "Goat Horns" suffered from a crude production, "Lunar Poetry" utilizes a clearer production, but maintains a "distant" atmospheric sound, especially in the vocals. Everything here was mastered from the original mCD, which was recorded on analog. So here, you have a more classic, warm production, with the classic tape hiss and everything. Some may complain about the tape hiss, but I think it adds that much more to the ancient feel of this album. Varrgoth's vocals are more in the traditional BM style here, though he does some strange chanting every now and then. (But especially on "Autodafe/Barbarian's Dreams".) The guitars play a bigger role here, and often harmonize together, and even solos pop up every now and then, but the keyboards are just as essential as they ever could be in NM's awe-like soundscape. First off, there is much more of a folk influence in the music here, and I guess you could say it's "heavier".

Where "Goat Horns" gave listeners visions of starry summer nights, "Lunar Poetry" portrays a more sorrowful and dreamy atmosphere, especially with the guitar work and ritual chanting vocals. Rather than visualizing a full moon riding over the plains, you get more of "wintery" vibe from this album. Listening to this would make you swear you were in the mountains on a bleak and cloudy winter night. I appreciate this type pf atmpshere that is portrayed, so I guess you could say I prefer this to "Goat Horns", though they are both supreme albums in the field of extreme metal.

Nokturnal Mortum's most famous track is on here, "Perun's Celestial Silver". It is absolutely beautiful and stunning! It has the depressing folk melodies, an absorbing atmosphere, and is probably one of the best songs on the album. "Carpathian Mysteries" is another favorite of mine with its beautiful guitar harmonies, and the war-march of "Ancient Nation" must be heard. But for me, the high point comes with "Autodafe/Barbarian's Dreams". The song plays out like a story, shifting through several extravagant melodies before breaking down into the final cycle of dream-like keys and cutting off into tape hiss. Breathtaking...

Like any other NM release, I would reccommend this to fans of symphonic black metal, or even Viking metal. A top-notch CD. Buy this along with "Goat Horns" and Summoning's "Stronghold".

5 out of 5 stars Majestic Black Metal Brilliance!!.......2004-07-19

This is the first album ive ever picked up by nokturnal mortum and im shocked...these guys are amazing. From the first notes of 'tears of pagonism' you know this is gonna be a dark and majestic album. The songs are very very well written, way beyond most black metal acts abillity. I would recommend this to any fan of true black metal. \m/

5 out of 5 stars Majestic Black Metal Glory.......2003-10-09

Hailing from the Ukraine, Nokturnal Mortum has become one of the most talked about acts in the Black Metal scene as well as the National Socialist Black Metal (NSBM) scene. Lunar Poetry, their second album, has become one of the most influential and beautiful Black Metal albums around. Melodic guitars and majestic keyboards make this album a true tribute to the solemn moonlit sky on a winter night. Simply breathtaking.

Tears Of Paganism (a short, melancholic keyboard intro) starts off Lunar Poetry leading right into the title-track. Blasting drums and Black Metal rasps fill your mind with the memory of ancient Pagan nights of worship and pride. Following the title-cut comes one of the most elegant and beautiful songs I've heard: Perun's Celestial Silver.

Perun's Celestial Silver begins with a folk-inspired keyboard melody taking you far away into a land of thought and landscape. After the minute intro guitars kick in and now you are off into some of Black Metal's most glorious moments ... Embrace it while you can. From raging, haunting melodies to majestic winter imagery, Perun's Celestial Silver possesses it all. And to think this is only the beginning...

Like a storm gathering in the sky, Lunar Poetry continues on building and building thoughts and peace in your mind. From the inspiring folk-melodies of Ancient Nation to the war-march of The Grief Of Oriana, prepare to experience perfection.

Autodafe/Barbarians Dreams closes the album in the same vein as Perun's Celestial Silver. Powerful folk influences, beautiful soundscapes and tear-provoking melodies, this song once-again capture's the true essence of Nokturnal Mortum. At about four and half minutes into the song you will be taken to the closing of the album: A keyboard melody that truly is one of the most beautiful I've heard. Building on the melody is added piano and drums as well as Knjaz's whispers in the quiet, silky night.

May I say it once again ... Perfection.

5 out of 5 stars A GOOD BUY.......2005-11-12

Omigod..."Take Me Home, Country Roads" by Skeeter Davis on this compilation? Well then everyone should buy this. This is a really good CD. There are one or two slow moments, but otherwise this is the epitome of country and western.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Collection of Vintage Country 70's Hits.......2005-07-05

This is a wonderful collection of vintage 1970's country music hits, and yes purists, these are the originals. All of these recordings were released on RCA with six exceptions: Loretta Lynn (Decca), Susan Raye (Capitol), The Kendalls (Ovation), and Margo Smith, T. G. Sheppard, and the Bellamys (all Warner Bros.) RCA really dominated country music in the 70's (and the 60's and 80's too) so it's no surprise they had so many of the tracks here. Makes you wonder why they didn't go for an all RCA collection but the other tracks are absolutely wonderful (though the Bellamys have always been too soft rock for me and rarely country enough). You not only get the RCA superstars like Dolly, Waylon, and Ronnie, it's nice to see Dickey Lee here and whoa, what a nice surprise to see Dottsy (I'LL BE YOUR SAN ANTONE ROSE) who had a short but fairly successful stint for RCA. The album opens with Skeeter Davis' wonderful cover version of "Take Me Home Country Roads" but that song was never released as a single for her; Skeeter's 70's hits couldn't match her 60's sensations but she still had a number of top 40 country songs in the 70's so it's odd one of those wasn't used for her track here. Certainly you could hardly have a RCA country compilation without Skeeter D. This is a very good collection of 1970's country hits with some songs not easy to find.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Get your Fluke on!.......2005-04-23

This is a great follow up compilation to their previous one, Progressive History X. While X gives you their "best of" dance tracks XXX gives you the rest of the kit and kaboodle. X was for casual fans. XXX is for serious fans. This three CD boxed set is broken down into three categories: The rare early tracks, the follow up to the best of their released albums (at the time), and rare remixes. Basically whatever you missed before you can get now.

The first CD is all the early tracks that never made a CD release (with exception to the extremely rare Techno Rose of Blighty CD). Here is where you find Fluke before they perfected their signature sound. They have a lighter and more peppy sound that would put them more in the "above ground" club circuit.

The second CD is the tracks that were released on CD, although most of those were only released in the U.K. (Six Wheels on my Wagon and Oto). This is where the signature Fluke sound is strongest and personally this is my favorite CD in the collection. There are three songs from each of the U.K. albums and four songs from the Risotto CD. This kinda sucks if you already have Risotto (and you SHOULD have it) since you're repeating tracks.

The third CD is the rare remixes. Um... how do I put this...? There is a reason these are rare. They are by far not the best remix tracks of these songs. Many of them hardly sound like the original song at all. While sometimes this can be a good thing, and is on a few tracks on this CD, when it's a bad thing it will annoy you.

The box set itself is small enough to fit with the rest of your CD collection and is well crafted. The inserts are sparse with just a fold out of all the albums the compilation represents and a mini-poster of the Progressive History X cover. I would have liked to see some liner notes, band history, trivia, lyrics, SOMETHING!! Oh well. I didn't buy the CD for reading anyway. Here's a breakdown of more notable tracks:

Easy Peasy - Nice and laid back. You start to hear the more creative and ambient side of Fluke in here. Not nearly as much as in Oto or Risotto, but it's a start.

Coolest - Reminds of the better synthesizer demos I heard in the 90's. Good use of piano and other acoustic sounds.

The Bells - This is where you start to hear Fluke come out of its early sound and into their classic sound. Of all the songs on the first CD this one sounds more like the Fluke I know and love.

Life Support - Super catchy song. Not high energy, but still makes you want to move a bit. This is one of those songs that missed its chance to be put on the PH X due to space limits and is now getting its due. Well... just about all the songs on the 2nd CD are like. Yeah... they're that good.

OK - My favorite song on the 2nd CD (also one of my faves from the album Oto). Very ambient and anthem sounding at the same time. This is what Fluke does best.

Goodnight Lover - Very ambient and at the same time agressive. Reminds me of Orbital when they were doing the soundtrack for The Saint. Very cool 60's spy-movie vibe.

Groovy Feeling (Screwball) - One of those remixes that sounds very different from the original song. Of those very different sounding ones that actually works on the dance floor. Some might find it a bit repetitive for home listening.... some.

Atom Bomb (Atomix 4) - This is probably my favorite remix from the Atom Bomb 12" album. It too is totally different from the original... and very long. However if you know what to listen for you will indeed see the connection. A long and fun mix.

Absurd (Soul of Man Mix) - This one you will recognize as a mix of Absurd. Definitely dance-worthy. One of the better rare remixes.

Ultimately this compilation is for the die-hard Fluke fans who want to hear their early stuff and get some rare stuff. If you already have Risotto, Oto or Six Wheels the second CD would probably feel like a waste, but if the other CD catch your fancy it's still worth the effort. Personally I have just about every Fluke CD that can be had (save that rare Techno Rose of Blighty... and I almost got it once too... sigh) and I'm still glad I have Progressive History XXX.

4 out of 5 stars Another best of, but this one comes in a box........2004-01-06

Released in late 2002, this is the "sequel" to Fluke's 2001 "best of" album, Progressive History X. Here's a quote from an interview with them on the Progressive-Sounds site, which kinda explains why they've released another compilation so early:

"It's called commercial marketing, squeezing every last drop, but it is a good way to hear the cream of the first albums if you don't own them, and was an interesting thing to do. We get bit dewy eyed with all those memories, we're a bunch of softies really." - Jon Fugler.

At least he's honest about them wanting some more money, right?

It's also a box set, but it departs from the usual "take some CD cases and wrap cardboard around them" formula. The box - an actual box, that encloses the discs completely - is thick matt black cardboard, with the dance floor image from the Progressive History X cover printed in shiny black ink. Inside, each CD is in its own thin cardboard sleeve (much the same as some singles were around 1997, but thinner and not made of that horrible "dog hair" looking stuff), with the same image as the box printed on the front. On the back is the list of songs, and which album or single they came from.

There's also a card thanking everyone from their producers to their accountants, and... a surprise! Okay, so it's only a 3x3 CD-sized poster of the cover image (in colour, no less), but I wasn't expecting it.

So, is it worth buying? If you're like me and weren't around to collect all the albums and singles as they were released (or, also like me, you live in a country filled with music stores that won't stock anything that isn't mainstream and released last week), and don't exactly relish the idea of buying them for $300 a piece from someone in East Turkmenistan off eBay, it's an easy way to listen to some of their older and rarer stuff at low cost. If you've already got all of the albums and singles, you've got everything on this album already, so don't bother... unless you're a complete lunatic and buy the things just because they're there. In which case, can I have some of your money, please?

If you've never heard (or bought) Fluke before, you could do worse than buy this. It's not just singles from over the years, there's also a lot of good album tracks that never got paid much attention.

1972 compilation is a good selection of the better songs recorded by the group from What We Did on Our Holidays (1969) thru Babbacombe Lee (1971), including 'Sailor's Life', 'Who Knows Where the Time Goes', 'Meet On the Ledge', 'Si Tu Dois Partir', 'Matty Groves', 'Sloth' & 'Angel Delight'. 18 tracks. Island.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars The Best Place To Start.......2005-07-09

Fairport isn't Fairport without both Richard Thompson and Sandy Denny, which is why this is the best place for a beginner to tap into this amazing band. Other compilations such as "Meet on the Ledge" include too much of their less-productive years (which by the standards of most other groups would be considered fertile). It's a coin toss as to whether their best album is "Unhalfbricking" or "Liege and Leif." I prefer the latter because I'm a folkie, but if you're into rock you might like the former (or you just like it for its great title). But those two albums alone don't give you enough of an introduction to Fairport, because you miss many great tunes like "Just A Roll." You would think that, because what made them so special at the time was their unique blend of British folk and rock, that they wouldn't age well as that genre has been done to death. You would think wrong.

5 out of 5 stars A solid one-disc compilation of Fairport's greatest period.......2002-03-24

This Island compilation covers seven albums from 1968 to 1973, when Fairport Convention recorded most of its best work. Strictly speaking, it's not a "Greatest Hits" album, because Fairport never really had any hits. But this is probably the best place to begin for any newcomer to Fairport. The album touches all the bases: Fairport classics "Meet on the Ledge", "Si Tu Dois Partir", and "Matty Groves", singer-songwriter material like "Who Knows Where the Time Goes" and "Book Song", songs that seem to exist outside of time like "Fotheringay" and "Now Be Thankful", the musical interplay of "Sloth", and electrified traditional songs like "A Sailor's Life". The only things that keep this from being fully representative of Fairport's career are the lack of drinking songs and songs about lost maidenheads. The oft-neglected "Babbacombe Lee" album is represented by three songs. There are a few quibbles in the song selection--for example, why is the "Rosie" album represented by the average "Hen's March/Four Poster Bed" instead of the exceptional title cut? Why "Mr. Lacey" and "Book Song" instead of "I'll Keep It with Mine", "Come All Ye", or "Tam Lin"? This version of the CD adds "Crazy Man Michael", which was not originally included. Fairport's first, pre-Sandy Denny, album is not included because it was put out by Polygram and not Island.

5 out of 5 stars Good things last............2001-08-23

Vinyl wears, no matter how careful you are, but certain music lasts because it lodges in the heart.

To hear the purity of Sandy Denny's voice, pre-empting Eva Cassidy by nearly 30 years; to listen to the poetry of her words in her lover's song "Who knows where the time goes", seeing that deserted shore in our minds eye - this was one of the greatest ballads of the last century.

Yet there is laughter and merriment here too. The English folk tunes tumble over one another with the violin getting your feet tapping in tunes like "Four Poster Bed; Hen's March or Toss the Feathers".

You must feel sorrow for poor "Matty Groves", who found himself in such an awkward position and such an unfair fight! Never did a young man need to learn the value of saying "No thanks" to such a tempting offer.

Fairport Convention was a band that experienced both the cruel and carefree sides of life and put their experiences into their music. There is something for all moods in this excellent compilation.

But most of all there is Sandy's haunting, clear voice. It is worth buying these recordings for that alone..
