Album Description

Originally a Goth-flavored post-punk outfit, the Cure evolved into one of the truly seminal bands of the '80s, and ultimately one of modern rock's most celebrated and influential acts. Guided by creative visionary Robert Smith, the Cure's signature sound balances a dreamy pop savvy with a dark, brooding majesty and fuses superbly crafted, literate songs with a feverish emotional intensity. The band's early catalog-newly remastered and expanded wtih a wealth of rarities-is a series of masterpieces that laid the groundwork for their phenomenal and enduring popularity.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece of Gothic Despair!.......2007-01-28

There is no question in my mind that Robert Smith's head was in the lowest pit of hell when he wrote this album. The music is filled with anger, hate, sorrow, fear, rage, and despair; all pieces of the darker parts of the human psyche. The listener is taken on a gothic roller-coaster ride through dementia starting with the line "It doesn't matter if we all die" all the way to the vampiric conclusion "I must fight this sickness". Such emotion in this album, and you can't pull away from listening to it. There is something about the way the music is constructed and performed that keeps your ears alert and numbs your mind to the pain that is being expressed. You find yourself understanding the agony of the performers.

This record was way ahead of its time and, until 1989's "Disintigration", was The Cure's greatest achievement in the studio. Every song is great and they flow from one to the next in a perfect order. This album is flawless; a magically written, masterfully performed accomplishment in music.

The Deluxe Edition makes this version a must. The second disc is filled with goodies from this period in The Cure's history. It complements the original album with songs of the same gloomy feeling that the album focuses on.

5 out of 5 stars 100 stars If I could..The cures finest moment.......2006-10-09

I have been a cure fan since the 8th grade. They are and have been my favorite band. Having digested all of thier albums continously (this band got me through high school, so I support this band very strongly) I can honestly say that Pornography is thier best body of work. Nothing else they did comes close to this...its incredible. Its like being thrown into your worst nightmare and enjoying it. Yeah, Im confused too but there it is. The song "100 Hundred years"(the song itself makes the album worth buying) starts the trip without mercy with Robert Smith uttering the harsh "It doesnt matter if we all die." You know that you are in for a heck of a ride so your brain automatically buckles its seatbelt and before you know it, your lost in this beautiful and disturbing world. If the cure were labled Goth after this record than they only have themselves to blame for churning out this masterpiece. But you cant help but listen to this and know that all of the dracula wannabes have this record in thier collection.

If your new to the cure and you are interested in trying to understand what all the fuss is about than this is the best starting point for your unforgettable journey into this bands mythic and brilliant music.

Most people will say that Disintegration or Head on the door is the launching pad But I disagree. Pornography is the best way to get it. Its the Cure at its most vulnerable and its most potent. THe song "100 years" will be all the proof you need and before you know it your hooked.

Than you will find yourself patting yourself on the back for listening to this wonderful band...I still do....17 years and counting.

5 out of 5 stars Spiralling... Spiralling... Spiralling.......2006-07-11

This album is quite possibly the darkest album I've heard in a long time. Robert was spinning into drug-induced depression at the time, and the results were Pornography. Every song from 100 Years to the title track are pumped full of deep, black, depression. Even the first line of the cd, 'It doesn't matter if we all die', lets the listener know what he/she is in for. The guitar puts the icing on the cake. It laces all of the music with dysfunctional, screaching, spirals that one might hear on the path to insanity. The cold drum machine gives the darkness it's heartbeat, and Robert gives the music the 'losing hope' vocals. When Robert sings, you ALWAYS hear every bit of emotion that he intended to be put in the song. Buy this album along with Disintigration. You won't be disappointed. Also, check out Faith and Seventeen Seconds for more Cure darkness.

5 out of 5 stars Sounds much better.......2006-06-03

"Pornography" may be the definitive Cure album. The group has had some serious missteps, several lineup changes, all the highs and lows that go with a thirty year history, but this one is on the mark from begining to end. Many fans cite the 1989 masterpiece "Disintergration" as the groups finest hour, and I'll stay out of the debate (personally, I am partial to "Faith", despite its obvious shortcomings)--but if there is such a thing as a Cure aesthetic, it finds some of its best exprression here. The sound is stipped down, ominous interlocking drums and bass. The lyrics are mostly superb. From the opening of the disc, "It doesn't matter if we all die" (can there be a better summation to the group's gestalt?), to the self-referential final lines of the work, there is real passion here. It flirts with solipsism--a characteristic that mars much of their other work--but never quite crosses over. Whether you're 14 and "screaming at the moon", or 40 and covering your face as the animals die, there is poetry enough here.

5 out of 5 stars Welcome to the dark side of The Cure.......2006-03-14

This is an awsome album. Like all of the cures deluxe editon albums I would only recommend spending the extra money if you are a hardcore fan, otherwise stick with the less expensive single disc orignal cd. My personal favorite songs are One Hundred Years and Strange Days. The album may seem short with only eight tracks, but each song is long. I especially recommend this album to peopole who like the cures darker music(Seventeen Seconds, Desintegration, Bloodflowers).

Singer Robert Smith was determined to make the Cure one of the most distinctive groups of any age. After jaunty power pop was in vogue, Smith shifted to tone poems and ethereal freakouts. However, with Pornography, he entered the downward spiral that prompted the greatest music of his career. The title track is sheer hell as Smith abandons music altogether. But the remaining tracks are among the finest the '80s had to offer. "One Hundred Years," with its grinding riff, "Siamese Twins," with its stuttering beat, and "The Figurehead" ("I laughed in the mirror for the first time in a year") are gothic studies in terror par excellence. Nothing sounded like Pornography, not even other Cure records. It has since been decided that Pornography is the first volume of a trilogy that's completed by Disintegration and Bloodflowers. Both are worthy, but nothing beats the first installment. --Rob O'Connor

5 out of 5 stars CREEPIEST CD I EVER OWNED/LISTENED TO.......2007-06-13

I had this on repeat one night and woke up several times through the night screaming my mother's name...well, not quite that bad, but DANG!, this is creepy stuff!! I mean, I'm not SCARED of it, it's just INTENSELY CREEPY; like 'what the hell inspired this dude to make this shiznit!!???'...I mean, you get the idea that something is terribly wrong while listening to this, yet it's it's so awesome, 'cause the crafting of it is so superb! It's 80's new wave, just like the stuff they used to play on the radio when this CD came out (1982), but it's not all "Jessie's Girl" or whatever...it's like a masochists vision of The End...totally amazing stuff for those 'weird' folks who like a little (or a lot of) bitter with their sweet...

5 out of 5 stars One of the greatest albums ever, by anyone anywhere.......2007-02-02

Pornography is the Cure par excellence. If you're attracted to the darker side of life and the intensity and irony and passion and despair that goes with that, you will likely love this album. Darkly erotic, painful and ecstatic, soaring and plunging to the depths of disorientation, disillusion and despair.
I have owned this album since the mid 1980s, soon after it was released (nearly 30 years ago!!), and it is one of the few I have never tired of as the years passed. A masterpiece.
(Oh, and the lyrics only get more poignant, not less, as you age. Speaking as someone who was a teenager when she bought it and is now in her late 30s ;-)

5 out of 5 stars You Will Never Be Clean Again...........2006-08-17

Disgusted by the overbearing pop of the 1983 singles compilation "Japanese Whispers"?

This album is for you.

Frightened by "Faith"?

Stay the hell away.

Pornography is product of a disturbed and distorted mind. While Seventeen Seconds, Faith, Disintegration, and Bloodflowers (all of which are absolute masterpieces) are included in the same mold as Pornography, the thematic differences are vast.

Seventeen Seconds, Faith, Disintegration, and Bloodflowers are all dark albums, but they remain mostly in sadness, sorrow, and regret.

Pornography is an album which, to me, is about disgust, hate, discomfort, rage, and, dare I say it, disintegration. Pornography is about the downward spiral, through and through, in a way that no other Cure record has been. It is a world apart from any of the other albums that The Cure ever put out (though moments of Pornography can be seen on tracks such as 1987's "The Kiss" and 1989's "Disintegration").

------------------------------------------------

One Hundred Years:

The instant the record begins, you know what you're in for. As soon as the first drum-beats of "One Hundred Years" hits, you're trapped. "It doesn't matter if we all die!" Robert Smith demands. For most bands, such a proclaimation would seem shallow and melodramatic. Such is simply not true of The Cure's "One Hundred Years". The desperation in the line "Please love me!" would, again, sound cheesy from any other band, but The Cure does it right.

This song is a ten, probably my favourite from the album. This track is as angry, uncomfortable, and disturbing as any other song ever recorded.

10/10.

---------------------------------------------------

A Short Term Effect:

About drugs.

The echoing vocals on this track are memorable as is the bass and at times almost subliminal guitar, which weaves dangerously in and out of the song. There's not much to say about this song for me, it's probably my least favourite on the album.

8/10.

-------------------------------------------------------------

The Hanging Garden:

Very good drum-beat, the only song off of Pornography that I recognised during my first listen (I own Staring at the Sea: The Singles). When in the right mood, this is one of those songs that causes you scowl and bob your head a bit. The vocals are disturbing (like all on Pornography are) and Robert Smith has said that the song is about "animals f***ing". Probably my second or third least-favourite on the album, though a classic.

8.5/10

-----------------------------------------------------

Siamese Twins:

Robert has described this song as being the counterpart of The Hanging Garden. About "people f***ing". The beat is quite slow and the lyrics are amongst the most disturbing on the album. "Is it always like this?" "Worms eat my skin." "Leave me to die... you won't remember my voice." Again, for most bands, this song would sound unconvincing and fake, but The Cure definitely pulls it off. Not one of my favourites on the album.

8.5/10

-----------------------------------------------------

The Figurehead:

Very tribal sort of drum-beat and with very powerful lyrics. "I laughed in the mirror for the first time in a year," to me, drips with self-disgust. "You mean nothing.... you mean nothing..." The words here are hollow and it sounds like Robert is trying to convince himself as much as anyone else. Very painful, but with unquestionable beauty. "I can never say no to anyone but you...." A very emotional lyric that drips with mourning and, again, self-disgust. Robert seems repulsed by his inability to deny. As if to compound that idea, "I will never be clean again.... I will never be clean again.... I will never be clean again.... I will never be clean again...."

10/10

--------------------------------------------------

A Strange Day:

Another good drum-beat on this one. "Give me your eyes that I might see," a fairly morbid way of starting the song off. That's how it's done, Robert. Robert has said that this song is about what it would be like to be "the last person on earth." This, however, is probably one of the most upbeat songs on the album, which speaks volumes about the darkness on Pornography.

9/10

--------------------------------------------------

Cold:

Can you guess what the opening organ means, folks? Bleak, depressing excellence? Spot on. "Scarred, your back curled like an embryo," strong imagery here. "A shallow grave, a monument to the ruined age...." "Screaming at the moon, another pastime..." "Everything as cold as life... can no one save you? Everything as cold as silence...." The great keyboards and great vocals on this song make it my third favourite of the album. Another ten.

10/10

----------------------------------------------------

Pornography:

Congratulations, you've reached the end. The song opens with the BBC signing off (played backwards) and then goes straight into the chaos. Musically, this is perhaps the darkest song on the album. And while the lyrics are, at times, as dark as any on the album ("One more day like today and I'll kill you!", "A desire for flesh, and real blood...", "I'll watch you drown in the shower...."), it also contains the single most hopeful statement on the record. "I must fight this sickness! Find a cure! I must fight.... this.... sickness!" says Robert, thereby ending the record on a, if only very slightly, hopeful note.

9.5/10

-------------------------------------------------

So there you have it. Pornography is my personal favourite Cure album, but it must be warned that it is definitely not for everyone. You will either love this album or hate it.

Disintegration and Bloodflowers would touch on the pain of this album, but none has, and I doubt ever will, surpass the pure, unadulterated pain, hopelessness, and anger that this album expresses so fully.

Listen at your own risk.

5 out of 5 stars Bleak and Beautiful.......2006-08-11

Truly in its simple and almost amateur feel, Pornography is not made worse, but all the better. It feels so close and, in a way, frightening. It is as if you are driving through the middle of nowhere, but manage to tune into some lost airwave. Suddenly through the static sounds you hear music, and that music is Pornography by The Cure. Pornography truly is capable of creating an image of the blackest corner of Hell, yet it is surprisingly listenable. Dispite the fact that I jump in my skin everytime the title track plays, songs like A Strange Day, Cold, and Siamese Twins are ones I could listen to over and over. Pornography is black and frightful, yet surprisingly intriguing and listenable.

5 out of 5 stars Forged In The Darkest Depths of The Human Psyche.......2006-05-10

One could not fathom a darker, bleaker, disturbing, haunting, clouded, doomed album than "Pornography". The opening song, "One Hundred Years" immediately captures the listener and sends them on their way to the catacombs of darkness. As soon as this song starts, I picture a large manor on the top of a hill with a spiral staircase in the very center of the main room and a gray faced dressed in a black tuxedo carrying a tray of stale food, slowly making his way down the staircase with his head staring straight ahead, never looking down, yet somehow remaining perfectly balanced. The man continues his plight, down and down he goes, down and down. He never will make it the the main room above the staircase again. He will try and possibly even get his feet to the second stair from the top, but he will remain trapped in that spiral staircase for eternity.

I have to stop there, because the imagery gets much worse, nearly unbearable. The thoughts and images that form in my mind are far too morbid. They are colder than an ice woven knife sliding down the vein of a warm wrist. If you aren't ready to endure something comparable to what I have described then be wary of purchasing this album. If you believe you are ready, then you are in for an experience like none you have ever had before.

"Pornography" is my second favorite album of all time. In case you were wondering, my favorite album of all time is "Disintegration".

This is no place for the weak-hearted or conservative. From the intro, "You Know" confirms that the material in this album (including the jaw-dropping liner notes) is going to be as naughty as the album title suggests. It's chockful of electronic bleeps, clash, bumps, whips, chains, cocks and locks. Adriano Canzian tells us he's sometimes bisexual, sometimes transsexual... but always gay. And proudly so. This is edgy music of the 21st century that will do well in any discerning club (or dungeon, for that matter). Let the Macho Boy rip!!

4 out of 5 stars oh my..........2005-06-12

this album is great. i have the two 12" singles released from this album already (macho boy and my boyfriend is very sexy) and the full length is great. the liner notes are extremely risque, but i think intended as a joke. the pix are totally gay porn with adriano's head superimposed. it looks like it's him though. i thought it was pretty funny. anyway its really acid-bassliney electro with a definite gay slant to it. it's hott. go buy it.

3 out of 5 stars Gay electro?.......2005-05-31

The first thing you notice about this cd is the liner notes. They are filled with pornographic picture of Adriano having intercourse with other men, and of nude shots of himself. He makes it no secret he is gay. The lyrics in about half the songs are explicitly gay also. This detracts a bit from the music. It seems novel at first but after a while it becomes stale. That having been said, it is a pretty good electro / techno / electroclash album. Not for the easily offended, but if you're a fan of electro, you might just like this.

      5 out of 5 stars Great groove.......2007-01-08

I love this album in and of itself. Great chill-out background music, and if you like Bhagra, all the better. about halfway thru many songs, you get a vague realization that you just might "know this song" - ie, the original song being covered. but often you can't really be sure. and then you get lost again in the excellent vibe and then who really cares. I admit that I am a fan of a few of the covered artists (Jane's Addiction, Nirvana, others), but they still are at least one dimension below the surface here. in fact, one of the best songs is "Cars," and I can barely remember the original. Don't buy this as a "cover song novelty" - rather, buy it if you like good chill-out grooving lounge music, and you'll be very happy.

5 out of 5 stars Strap on your seat belts.......2000-11-23

Wow! We just picked this album up as a hoot--the cover caught our attention, and the song list intrigued. If you're up for some experimental stuff, you have found it. It really defies description, and I have listened to a lot of very esoteric music. If pushed, I'd say you have something akin to a cross between the Space Negros and Shockabilly and Beatle's sitar. The instruments are haunting, the arrangements fab, and the overall musicality top notch. If you like your music on the edge (of just about everything), this is a good catch.

            Product Description

"What can i add? Probably on white youth bass and guitar a better matched, gloomier and more shadowy, - anyway treble and high levels at maximum, forever and ever, - but this cd (no more vocals) is surely (as regards me) more notworthy than the former, even because there's an effort of difference. On my money, as example, there's a unforeseen dodecaphonic exploit, camera instruments, actually trombones, - and say goodbye to the black industrial post-rock until former pornography come back to spoil the party. This song, above 1o minutes, presents a contorted jungle of wind-instruments, then nearly erased by restless percussions (not more a machine), low frequency sampling, and a new outburst, as well on volk, slaughter of drumming and choked feedback." - Paolo Miceni - Komakino
