Editorial Reviews
Recorded in Paris and New York under the production guidance of Pierre Jaubert ("Berjot"), the Lafayette Afro-Rock Band were a jazz-based super session group that created a heavy, dense, no compromise ghetto funk that has since been sampled by everyone from Public Enemy to Wreckz 'N' Effect.
After the first release of the Lafayette Afro-Rock Band, Soul Makossa, everyone was quick to recognize such an abundance of talent in one group. The response was immediate to the new rhythm in their music, which was to delve into the contemporary disco scene with Malik.
At this point, we could go on and on, but for those who already know the band, you will be fully aware of what we mean. For those who are listening for the first time, the Lafayette Afro-Rock Bands bandwagon is becoming larger and is ready to take people on their heaviest musical trip!

Monsoon Wedding is Mychael Danna's second collaboration with film director Mira Nair, (Kama Sutra was the first), and he has again compiled a winning soundtrack. Danna explores a wide range of emotions, from solemn to celebratory, through different generations of Indian culture. The contemplative "Good Indian Girls" and "Hold Me, I'm Falling" feature Danna's trademark piano ambience over traditional Indian instrumentation, and the vivacious "Baraat" sounds like a Punjabi variation on Dixieland, while "Delhi.com" ventures into dreamy ethno-techno territory. Sukhwinder Singh's "Today My Heart Desires" serves up lively bhangra rock, and Laxmikant Pyarelal's "Today the Weather Plays Tricks on Me" (performed by Mohammed Rafi) swoons with strings and male vocals. In all, the soundtrack's pleasing variety of Eastern music mirrors the film's old and new worlds living within a singular culture. --Bryan ReesmanCustomer Reviews:
Monsoon Wedding Soundtrack is Terrific.......2007-05-18
Loved it!.......2007-03-24
I just saw the movie MONSOON WEDDING and I absolutely loved it! Of course, I just HAD to have the soundtrack, so I bought the Cd recently and loved it too! WOW!
The Cd will leave you in a happy mood... Wonderful up-beat songs, many are so danceable and hipnotic. I've been playing this Cd all week ...I just wish it were longer because I would love to have more Cds like this in my Cd collection.
Just as fabulous as the movie!.......2007-01-31
Love It, Love It, Love It.......2007-01-21
I'd recommend seeing the movie too. As well, I'd check out Danna's music for another Mira Nair movie, "Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love."
Culture-Happy-Dance-Reflect-Appreciate-Savor-Relax-Laugh.......2006-11-06
It is very Culture rich and soaked in Indian flavor. It's colorful and makes you happy with a laugh or two; as it seeks to portray the traditional music typical of a Punjabi wedding in Delhi, India.
You want to dance with most songs and sit quietly to reflect with others. I listed appreciate because we often don't sit back to appreciate the richness that other cultures provide. My 2 year old appreciates this music in her broken wanna be Hindi mimic.
She dances as does my 6 year old to this music. It's really a great CD but I would recommend seeing the movie first.

Born out of the cabarets, brothels, and bars in the seaside district of Oran in Algeria, raï is an Arabic musical reaction to rock & roll and disco. The differences are evident in the beat and lyrics, which are less polite and more sexual. While this collection culls 12 tracks from a time when the grassroots music was sold on cheap--and cheaply produced--cassettes, there are bright spots. Cheikha Remitti's more traditional sound is a welcome respite from the cheesier productions. Malik's "N Touma" uses samples to create a pleasantly edgy collage. The funkiest track comes from Cheba Nouria, whose "Consulat" boasts electro groove and a bit of reggae syncopation. Cheb Mami and Cheb Khaled tracks sound dated, but they provide enlightening and entertaining comparisons with both artists' more recent works. Though this is a fine overview of the music's early years, curious fans should explore more sophisticated recent efforts by the two gents. --Tad HendricksonCustomer Reviews:

Excellent introduction to rai.......2002-11-30
The music ranges in sound from dancey pop to sweeping Egyptian orchestrals to breathy, intricate taqsims. The rhythms always take over, though.
Once again, the Rough Guide series has put together an excellent compilation. This is a perfect introduction to the genre, although I can't help but notice the absence of Rachid Taha.

Not bad actually..........2006-02-07
Tracks of note on here are:
1) Malik Sealy - Don't Get Lost In The Sauce - An extremely "real" track about his upbringing, lessons learned from life, and his dedication and focus. It is actually of historical importance because Malik Sealy died unexpectedly a few years later... making this track all that much more important. The song as a whole (including beat and lyrics) is also quite good.
2) Cedric Ceballos f/ Warren G - Flow On - A popular west-coast anthem for it's time. It's sound embodies the prime of G-funk era music and is fun to listen to.
3) Jason Kidd - What The Kidd Didd - Though he pretty much just talks about how big he is, the song has a tight beat and is engineered well. It's actually pretty funny to listen to some of the lyrics now, but entertaining nonetheless.
4)Gary Payton - Living Legal And Large - Gary Payton is considered old skool now, but he was in fact "legal and large" in the 90s. The content in this song is enjoyable to listen to and the beat is worth mentioning too.
In sum, I guess this album targets a very niche audience... So if you happen to appreciate the NBA of the mid-90s or when rap was just beginning to become a worldwide phenomenon (or the intersection of the two), you might want to pick this one up.

Following his own "out" path .......2006-03-18
In fact, this music is so different I'm not really sure what to compare it to. Yusef Lateef was also experimenting with what could be called world fusion jazz, and 15 or 20 years later Don Cherry went there, but Ahmed Abdul-Malik was on his own path. This is music rooted in bop, but every song really goes in a different direction, most with a strong Middle Eastern and African influence. With the exception of Andrew Cyrille on drums, all of the dozen of so players featured on this CD are pretty much unknown to me. It's amazing that he was able to get so many great (but obscure) musicians together to record, and the solos sound inspired and creative throughout.
I'd recommend this CD to just about anyone with an interest in jazz that's outside the boundaries of the straightforward (whatever that means), and this CD is especially a bargin since it's actually two albums compiled onto one CD.
Good music, Off the beaten track, but not too far........2003-12-12
For other music fans, some instruments on this album may sound off-key and the tempo somewhat disjointed and not really having any rythym at all. Listen to the Nights on Saturn clip. If you feel that this track is detestable, but you plain love jazz, then you will probably still enjoy the remaining three quarters of the album, which is solid, soul-inspiring jazz, with a few unique sounds to boot.
A Few Good Ones..........2003-10-24
