Product Description
Recorded in Paris and New York under the production guidance of Pierre Jaubert ("Berjot"), the Lafayette Afro-Rock Band were a jazz-based super session group that created a heavy, dense, no compromise ghetto funk that has since been sampled by everyone from Public Enemy to Wreckz 'N' Effect.

After the first release of the Lafayette Afro-Rock Band, Soul Makossa, everyone was quick to recognize such an abundance of talent in one group. The response was immediate to the new rhythm in their music, which was to delve into the contemporary disco scene with Malik.

At this point, we could go on and on, but for those who already know the band, you will be fully aware of what we mean. For those who are listening for the first time, the Lafayette Afro-Rock Band’s bandwagon is becoming larger and is ready to take people on their heaviest musical trip!

Monsoon Wedding is Mychael Danna's second collaboration with film director Mira Nair, (Kama Sutra was the first), and he has again compiled a winning soundtrack. Danna explores a wide range of emotions, from solemn to celebratory, through different generations of Indian culture. The contemplative "Good Indian Girls" and "Hold Me, I'm Falling" feature Danna's trademark piano ambience over traditional Indian instrumentation, and the vivacious "Baraat" sounds like a Punjabi variation on Dixieland, while "Delhi.com" ventures into dreamy ethno-techno territory. Sukhwinder Singh's "Today My Heart Desires" serves up lively bhangra rock, and Laxmikant Pyarelal's "Today the Weather Plays Tricks on Me" (performed by Mohammed Rafi) swoons with strings and male vocals. In all, the soundtrack's pleasing variety of Eastern music mirrors the film's old and new worlds living within a singular culture. --Bryan Reesman

I really enjoyed the movie and was pleased to find the soundtrack. Great cd if you're a fan of Bollywood!

5 out of 5 stars Loved it!.......2007-03-24

I just saw the movie MONSOON WEDDING and I absolutely loved it! Of course, I just HAD to have the soundtrack, so I bought the Cd recently and loved it too! WOW!

The Cd will leave you in a happy mood... Wonderful up-beat songs, many are so danceable and hipnotic. I've been playing this Cd all week ...I just wish it were longer because I would love to have more Cds like this in my Cd collection.

5 out of 5 stars Just as fabulous as the movie!.......2007-01-31

This is an excellent soundtrack from an excellent movie. The music is fantastic - makes you want get up and move your feet! It's got such a happy, wistful, exotic flavor throughout the CD. I think this will probably be one that I wear out from listening to it so much!

5 out of 5 stars Love It, Love It, Love It.......2007-01-21

I just love this CD. I'm preferential to the work of Mychael Danna and this is another awesome work of his. There is everything from old Indian love ballads to the popular Bollywood music of today, with some very beautiful instrumentals in between.

I'd recommend seeing the movie too. As well, I'd check out Danna's music for another Mira Nair movie, "Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love."

4 out of 5 stars Culture-Happy-Dance-Reflect-Appreciate-Savor-Relax-Laugh.......2006-11-06

Above I listed some words that first came to mind when I thought about this cd.
It is very Culture rich and soaked in Indian flavor. It's colorful and makes you happy with a laugh or two; as it seeks to portray the traditional music typical of a Punjabi wedding in Delhi, India.
You want to dance with most songs and sit quietly to reflect with others. I listed appreciate because we often don't sit back to appreciate the richness that other cultures provide. My 2 year old appreciates this music in her broken wanna be Hindi mimic.
She dances as does my 6 year old to this music. It's really a great CD but I would recommend seeing the movie first.

Born out of the cabarets, brothels, and bars in the seaside district of Oran in Algeria, raï is an Arabic musical reaction to rock & roll and disco. The differences are evident in the beat and lyrics, which are less polite and more sexual. While this collection culls 12 tracks from a time when the grassroots music was sold on cheap--and cheaply produced--cassettes, there are bright spots. Cheikha Remitti's more traditional sound is a welcome respite from the cheesier productions. Malik's "N Touma" uses samples to create a pleasantly edgy collage. The funkiest track comes from Cheba Nouria, whose "Consulat" boasts electro groove and a bit of reggae syncopation. Cheb Mami and Cheb Khaled tracks sound dated, but they provide enlightening and entertaining comparisons with both artists' more recent works. Though this is a fine overview of the music's early years, curious fans should explore more sophisticated recent efforts by the two gents. --Tad Hendrickson

5 out of 5 stars The Rebel Soul of Algeria.......2006-10-03

Few things are as quintessentially Maghrebi as Rai music. This compilation showcases the incredible variety of the modern Algerian sound, stretching back to the earliest pioneers of Rai music like Cheikha Remitti and going up to modern day legends like Khaled, Cheb Mami and the late Cheb Hasni (who was a hit across North Africa, despite not being as well known in the west as Khaled or Cheb Mami). All the big names are featured here. Theres the driving rhythms of Fadela and Sahraoui on "La Verite". The cross dressing pop star Abdou contributes a track, "Ana Aachki Bahloul". And even "Shab el Baroud," a song by Cheba Zahouania praising the Algerian mujahideen freedom fighters. This CD is an essential guide for understanding Rai music, the very heart and soul of Algeria. Anyone interested in Arabic music should definately go out and buy this CD. It's definately a different side of Algeria than that frequently featured on the news.

5 out of 5 stars EVEN MY CATS LIKE IT!.......2003-08-26

yeah, ok, my cats like everything, this is a very musical household, but seriously, they were getting a little bored of the same old arabesque cd's and were ready for something a little edgy and bold. this cd certainly fit the bill. the music is hard, biting, and yet retains it's uniqueness and rhthym. it reflects it's moroccan and arabic influences, but has a slight central asian feel to it that really makes it interesting. if you've ever considered stepping just outside the box, then the music of algeria is certainly worth a listen. my cats would definitely agree.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction to rai.......2002-11-30

The Rough Guide to Rai is the music of modern Algeria: politically-charge lyrics layered amongst Arabic instruments and beat-driven pop. You can think of it as the north African equivalent to reggae, unencumbered by the need to stick to 4:4 rhythms.

The music ranges in sound from dancey pop to sweeping Egyptian orchestrals to breathy, intricate taqsims. The rhythms always take over, though.

Once again, the Rough Guide series has put together an excellent compilation. This is a perfect introduction to the genre, although I can't help but notice the absence of Rachid Taha.

4 out of 5 stars You can learn to enjoy!.......2006-12-23

I wasn't very fond of bollywood films nor indian music. I was given a cd with some music, including some particular voices like Alka Yagnik, Udit Narayan and Sonu Nigam. This last one called my attention as he has a very melodious voice, the song "Tumese Milke Dil Ka Jo Haal " made fall for bollywood soundtracks. The things is first enjoy the voices, then the music and at the end you'll be humming along, even if you don't know what it means.

5 out of 5 stars Great Cd And Movie.......2006-06-18

I loved this cd especially the title song and gori gori they were my favorites.

4 out of 5 stars la le la le la (sorry, I'm meant to be writing not humming).......2005-03-12

This soundtrack is catchy. The main song is good, tne others are too, and if you don't like them you might find they grow on you. Rather a lot, I might add. If you like boppy music, the chances are pretty much that you'll like it. Well, I did give it 4 stars...

4 out of 5 stars FAIRLY WIDE SPECTRUM FOR THE "FEEL GOOD" SPARKLES.......2004-05-25

Before I saw this "feel good" masala SK starrer, the vibrant title song was pretty much the only number on this album that left a mark. With perhaps the disco kawwali thrown in for its contemporary thumps. But after you've seen the movie, the music fits and makes sense. It's a neat flick overall, with no pretentions of mega-meaningful moments. Nothing you'll spend your days and nights listening to, but a fairly worthy purchase for its pacy numbers (usable for clubs and parties) as well as for its romantic ballads (e.g., Gori Gori).

3 out of 5 stars Not bad actually..........2006-02-07

Though this album doesn't exactly represent the pinnacle of excellence in hip-hop, there are a few tracks on here that are worth a listen. This is especially true if you were/are a fan of either rap from the mid-90s or NBA basketball from that era. It's a plus if you happen to like both (as I did as a teenager back in the day).

Tracks of note on here are:

      1) Malik Sealy - Don't Get Lost In The Sauce - An extremely "real" track about his upbringing, lessons learned from life, and his dedication and focus. It is actually of historical importance because Malik Sealy died unexpectedly a few years later... making this track all that much more important. The song as a whole (including beat and lyrics) is also quite good.

      2) Cedric Ceballos f/ Warren G - Flow On - A popular west-coast anthem for it's time. It's sound embodies the prime of G-funk era music and is fun to listen to.

      3) Jason Kidd - What The Kidd Didd - Though he pretty much just talks about how big he is, the song has a tight beat and is engineered well. It's actually pretty funny to listen to some of the lyrics now, but entertaining nonetheless.

4)Gary Payton - Living Legal And Large - Gary Payton is considered old skool now, but he was in fact "legal and large" in the 90s. The content in this song is enjoyable to listen to and the beat is worth mentioning too.

In sum, I guess this album targets a very niche audience... So if you happen to appreciate the NBA of the mid-90s or when rap was just beginning to become a worldwide phenomenon (or the intersection of the two), you might want to pick this one up.

5 out of 5 stars Following his own "out" path .......2006-03-18

Ahmed Abdul-Malik played bass with Monk for a while (including on the At Carnegie Hall with Coltrane CD recently unearthed). He also can be heard on the sublime Complete 1961 Village Vanguard box set intermittently playing the oud with the classic John Coltrane quartet (which to me is a contender for the greatest music ever recorded). Despite these credentials, Abdul-Malik never achieved more than a moderate amount of recognition for his music, which is too bad considering how good this music on Jazz Sounds of Africa sounds. Right around the same time as the Vanguard recordings he recorded the music on this disc, which sounds equally as "out", and also very different, than what Coltrane was doing.

In fact, this music is so different I'm not really sure what to compare it to. Yusef Lateef was also experimenting with what could be called world fusion jazz, and 15 or 20 years later Don Cherry went there, but Ahmed Abdul-Malik was on his own path. This is music rooted in bop, but every song really goes in a different direction, most with a strong Middle Eastern and African influence. With the exception of Andrew Cyrille on drums, all of the dozen of so players featured on this CD are pretty much unknown to me. It's amazing that he was able to get so many great (but obscure) musicians together to record, and the solos sound inspired and creative throughout.

I'd recommend this CD to just about anyone with an interest in jazz that's outside the boundaries of the straightforward (whatever that means), and this CD is especially a bargin since it's actually two albums compiled onto one CD.

5 out of 5 stars Good music, Off the beaten track, but not too far........2003-12-12

I recommend this album highly for those who have listened to numerous Jazz albums and enjoy the music thoroughly (myself), but need a new spin to the standard blues, soul, or funk/fusion rythyms. The title does not deceive, this album consists of solid Jazz lines combined with a touch of traditional African instruments and rythyms. I also recommend purchasing if you are just plain nuts about music in all of its varieties (myself) and want to try something new.

For other music fans, some instruments on this album may sound off-key and the tempo somewhat disjointed and not really having any rythym at all. Listen to the Nights on Saturn clip. If you feel that this track is detestable, but you plain love jazz, then you will probably still enjoy the remaining three quarters of the album, which is solid, soul-inspiring jazz, with a few unique sounds to boot.

        3 out of 5 stars A Few Good Ones..........2003-10-24

Some of the tracks in this CD are good. Some (like the first one) seem like they played with an instrument off-key. I got it for a cheap price ($4) and it is worth that price. Definitely not worth full price. Sound quality is very good.
