Product Description
Italian DJ/producer Nicola Conte's loungey brand of acid jazz relies extensively on bossa nova, but is also heavily influenced by the swinging soundtracks of Italian films in the '60s and '70s, plus touches of ethnic music and easy listening kitsch reminiscent of Japan's Pizzicato Five and the Vampyros Lesbos soundtrack. Great stuff! 2000 release. Import only.

In this reimagined version of his 2000 import release, Jet Sounds (released in America as Bossa Per Due), Italian producer-jazzman Nicola Conte has found some impressive help in remixing his lounge-flavored electronica. Taking time out from sipping their cocktails are Thievery Corporation, Koop, and the Finnish collective Nuspirit Helsinki, who perform a deeply sensual, eight-minute version of the title track. Also making notable appearances are Japan's Kyoto Jazz Massive, who kick the beat up more than a notch on their ambient-tinged version of "The In Samba." Elsewhere, Conte himself contributes three new tracks, including the Latin-flavored tinkle jazz of "Love Me 'till Sunday," as well as the sly, soundtracklike "Tema in Hi-Fi." Using its fine cast of musicians and producers to full effect, Revisited explores the more acoustic, less beat-driven underbelly of Conte's songs, finding an elegant, carefree sound for a new generation of hepcats. --Matthew Cooke

4 out of 5 stars Ms Nicola Conte, I presume?.......2006-10-02

When I first heard of Nicola Conte, I assumed that (s)he was a woman, an assumption not corrected by the fact that when I entered the room where she was supposed to be playing at the North Sea Jazz Festival the stage was dominated by a tall lady wearing a very frilly dress, singing gustily. It was only when I mentioned to a friend that Nicola had a remarkable dress that she pointed out that Nicola was the chap hiding behind the drummer. Nicola must be a very modest or shy bloke, a supposition supported by the fact that he is hiding behind dark glasses on the cover of this CD. On the other hand, Nicola is Italian.

It might have been thought hard to better Mr. Conte's Bossa per Due, but here the ante is upped and the results are some extraordinary remixes. Check out particularly great takes on Tema In Hi-Fi by Nicola himself along with Gianluca Petrella; Jet Sounds by Nuspirit Helsinki; and an extraordinary new version of the In Samba by Kyoto Jazz Massive.

Warmly recommended. And, sorry Nicola, but if your parents will give you a girl's name

5 out of 5 stars very good cd to listen to while computing.......2006-01-30

for me this is one of the best musicians that I have heard for listening to while computing and working on school projects. It has an old type 60's 1970 movie feel like the movie Bullitt. This cd is definatley worth trying as well as his other cds. Yery good artist, I reccommend this one especially.

4 out of 5 stars another classic from my home town.......2004-08-16

I surprised myself the other day. I realized that all of my favorite CDs were produced by the Eighteenth Street Lounge in DC. Including this one. This album is a must for anybody who appreciates 60's style revival. The picture that comes to my mind while listening to the tracks held within this compilation, is a hopelessly trendy mod driving his white Jaguar down the pacific coast highway at midnight. Perhaps I watch too much TV. Never the less, if you like classy, brassy bossa or trip hop.. or if you want to feel like a secret angent, then I highly reccomend you purchase this album.

5 out of 5 stars Play it again Nic........2003-07-10

For those who enjoy jazz with a modern touch, lounge like ambiance and edgy feel, this album is a great add to your collection or a great start for newcomers. If you like the works of Frenchman St Germain, this is a pretty close comparison. Some tunes (like the tremendously swinging Fuoco Fatuo) will reassure you that jazz is not a brainy world but essence of music: wonderful rhythm, impro tunes, sexy voices, and crazy bass lines, all for the pleasure of feeling alive. It certainly has an European touch in its sophistication but an exciting Latino feel is also present (In Samba, Mambo de los Dandies). It's, let's say, a upbeat latino/lounge version of accessible jazz. Not hard on you ear -au contraire- it has a pleasant variety of sounds and instrumentation on each track: Arabesque is accompanied by a loungy almost fatigued and trendy style of voice, Forma 2000 has a piano/drum loop which serves as a baseline, Mission in Bombay does have that Indian influence in its playful flute tones, New Standards has a powerful trumpet chorus with swinging rhythms. It's a great balance of classic and modern trends. It's tonic but not too fashionable to sound old too soon. And it applies the basic rules of swing but doesn't smell like refried music. Play it again Nic...

5 out of 5 stars revisting bossa per due was a grrrrreeaat idea!.......2003-02-14

i know its a corny way to put it but it's true. the first track arabesque is a vocal version this tie performed by micatone. It's got a different beat, a piano, some cool breaks and you recognize it from the vibraphone section. it's got a really good jazz guitar by lisa bassenge and cool drums by kroker. the next song, forma 2001 by les gammas is really good as well. it has jazzy drumming at first but then it sortof gets into a trip hop beat witha good horn section. It does have some flue and i think flutes sound great. then tema in hi fi is by nicola conte and g. petrella. It's got a sortof mystic flute and the bass is awesome. Everything about this one is great. The next song is by nuspirit helsinki who's album i recently picked up. This song has a beat timed in 3/8 so it might sound a bit off at first but it's really good. Bosa per due is by thievery corporation who i highly reccomend (mirror conspiracy and richest man in babylon are 2 to check). It's really cool brush drumming and a thievery corp feel to it. then is fuoco fatuo by koop. I also highly reccomend them. This version has vocals and is more energetic with a piano and horn. the vocals are provided by the great earl zinger. New standards is by Nicola conte and G. Petrella again. I like this one alot. it's got good hand drums and piano. About a minute in it incoroprates a dance beat thats real good. Next is the in samba by kyoto jazz massive. this is my least favorite on the track only because i don't like the synthesizer in the background. Love me 'till sunday by nicola conte is a very good one. It starts off with a catchy piano and vibraphone and the great percussion the. missione a bombay by eddy and dus vs jazzalektro mix is one of my favorites. Like the original, it doesn't follow the same chill out jazzy rhythm but it's a got a really good beat and the drums and bongos match up well. The flute instead of sitar and trumpet sounds really cool. Next is dossier omega by espen horne. It's a really good track. It sounds latin and is overall just a good song with the percussion of sorts and horns. last but not least is mambo de los dandies performed by geraldo Frisina. The sax is cool and the bass sounds really good. all the drumming and percussion is great as well. I highly reccomend this cd to everyone. This is just as good as bossa per due and it defintely deserves a 5 star rating.

5 out of 5 stars the seminal cocktail culture composer.......2004-07-05

Finally, a stateside reissue of the seminal cocktail culture composer Bob Thompson's landmark lounge album, The Sound of Speed, has been released on CD courtesy of those pop culture archeologists at Dionysus, and the tireless efforts of Thompson's son, Spenser. The brilliant Thompson, a contemporary of such celebrated and better known RCA mood music magicians like Juan Garcia Esquivel and Henry Mancini, is long overdue for popular and critical re-discovery, and this crucially cool LP is a perfect launching pad for this revival.

Recorded in Rome in 1960, The Sound of Speed may seem relatively syrupy in our current culture of hyper-frenetic bass beats and pulse-pounding urban rhythms, but this music hails from a totally different context and era: The Space Age, when rest and relaxation were as much a part of our perceived future as electronically enhanced convenience. While Bob Thompson was at the peak of his powers, a lifestyle of luxury was promised for all, from the stay-at-home mom to the working stiff to the corporate climber. The soothing, stirring orchestration on this collection conveys both inspiration and intoxication. Each track is devoted to a different mode of transportation, most incorporating (or "sampling") the actual mechanical sounds of the object in musical question.

The soaring rhapsody of "Star Fire" (Jet Plane) and the bouncy lushness of "Early-Bird Whirly-Bird" (Helicopter) have been heard before on lounge compilations, but the rest of the dozen tunes here will be beautiful new music to the lucky listener's ears. From the continental coolness of "La Vespa" (Motor Scooter) to the dreamy drama of "Sub-Manhattan Blues" (Subway Train) to the aquatic aural atmosphere of "Sea-Spray" (Speed Boats) to the cosmic blast of "Count Down" (Missile), Bob Thompson will take you for one wild, wondrous ride. The destination for each traveler is the same: the sanctuary of your own sonically soused soul.

Along with the original cover and liner notes, the CD package also includes excerpts from an interview yours truly did with Bob for the Fall 2002 issue of ATOMIC Magazine, in which he humbly acknowledges the resurgence of interest in his music with bemused appreciation. Here's to you, Mr. Thompson: cheers, and thanks for the bright, shiny, brand new musical memories. The 21st Century welcomes you!

5 out of 5 stars The new jazz sound from Italy.......2003-04-15

5 out of 5 stars Set the standard... from the past.......2002-10-27

Picked this one up almost two years ago - and needless to say it still holds it's own in the collection. This feature release was in fact heard in... the Acura commercial... which can be annoying. But more recently fans have probably heard Conte's music in the "Joe Boxer" ad (talk about one-upping Acura in obnoxious advertising!) lol.

I really enjoyed this CD. You can pop it in and listen to it, and be taken away on a journey - it's a terrific soundtrack through the 60's and 70's, bossa Italia and, of course, bossa nova. Instantly, an image is brought into your head from track one. The feel of the music is from that era - and very much so martini/lounge style. But otherwise - it's easy beach music too.

Nicola Conte plays a big role with the Schema label - which features Soulstance and also the Break & Bossa series to name a few. The style is pretty consistent and if you like Conte's style, I'd recommend checking out Schema label artists and the series listed before.

Since this release, Conte has gone on to do a number of remixes and works: Montefiori Cocktail, Maxwell Implosion, Mo Horizons, and even the late Suba have all had some of their best tracks redone by Conte. And what will make fans more enthusiastic - a remix album was released and appears headed for US shores shortly. Also, a collaboration project which features Rosalia De Sousa (of Les Hommes/Break N Bossa/etc) will be released in early November.

A few other recommendations for fans of this: Sister Bossa 3 (almost a shameless rip-off of Bossa Per Deu can be found later in the cd), Easy Tempo, and maybe Brazilectro.

3 out of 5 stars Bet your boots on Shinola!.......2001-08-03

I hesitantly bought this because of the one track in the Acura commercial, but I have been playing it a lot lately (along with everyone else). Bossa Per Due is still the best song on the CD, but the remaining tracks are kitschy and fun and make you want to pull on your white boots and dance.

4 out of 5 stars For the jet set...or your car stuck in traffic.......2001-03-31

A couple of corrections from a previous reviewer: He's a guy (unless he's undergone surgery I haven't heard about), and martini madness will never die.

You know how different countries have somewhat distinct sounds: Japan has the retro-futuristic sound typical of Fantastic Plastic Machine, Pizzicato Five, and even Holland's Arling & Cameron are signed in Japan because their sound is more Japanese than Dutch, France and Quebec excel at Tech House, UK does Garage House, and the US does whatever it does...the point is Italy has an accoustic retro-futuristic lounge sound kind of like P5 and the like, but less electronic sounding. Instead of blatantly electronically sampling the sounds of the 60's in Italy, it actually sounds like the 60's in Italy. Nicola Conte is a big DJ there, so his music reflects the regions musical preference.

Perfect for a patio & pool party, glamorous balcony in Manhattan, or on a rooftop deck in Venice. Hope this helps. It's great.

5 out of 5 stars Swank modernity.......2001-02-25

Great album, perfectly swank--so swank, the "Bossa Per Due" track was used in a commercial for the Acura CL. It's got a similar feel to the sort of music that's commonly called "lounge", but while the martini-madness fad is dead as a doornail, Nicola Conte's stuff is holding up just fine.

            Product Description

No one truly knows for sure where the future of music is headed. Jane Fontana, however, is forging a new sound and style geared toward the 21st century. Imagine reading a comic book about this cyber-hero-super-chick, then watching her come to life, right off the pages before you! Shes a gorgeous, larger than life figure onstage and takes a no-holds-barred attitude when it comes to performing. Her singing style is animated, dead-on, and has such precision, she definitely has all the tools to become a real star. Jane Fontana performs near-punk futurism. She jumps and grinds, rails and coos inside a hyperdrive videogame of fat beats, chainsaw guitar, and samples, sliced and diced. The themes are despair and hope, sex and love, all with twistoflex intentions. It's as if the future is raw and weird, but somehow tight and even hummable. CREDITS: Not just a singer, Jane writes, produces, and sound designs instrumental electropop that is at times slinky and limber, and at others pumped and severe. Janes music can be heard in film and television, with credits including The 6th Day, starring Arnold Scharzennegger, Dawsons Creek, and MTVs Real World, Road Rules, Celebrity Undercover, and Tough Enough. Check out Janes latest film scoring work in 20th Century Foxs Farm Sluts, and listen for her in the upcoming season of TLCs Faking It.
