5 out of 5 stars Just what you need for the freeway...a woman's perspective.......2004-02-19

The perfect double CD set for cruisin' those L.A. freeways - I have been stuck in commuter traffic for *hours* - but the time flies when you're havin' fun! - Unfortunately, when I bought my new car, the CD player was defective and it ate one of the CDs - so I am ordering a replacement set. Or maybe the guys in the Service Department just *told* me they couldn't remove it....

Also great to do housework by, and I guess you could dance to these great numbers, too. Classics, and a lot of disco-type variety. Girls just wanna have fun.

5 out of 5 stars Great Music for All.......2003-02-23

Bought on a whim, this CD has never disappointed me. Sure, there are times when I simply cannot take another Diva belting out one of these classics. But there are definitely other times when this is the only music that can get me up and running, whether it be at home, at work, or trying to get my special someone to dance with me. Suprisingly, I've even got some of my coworkers to appreciate it . . . One day last fall at the office, my boss came in while I was pulling my hair out over a brief we had to file by c.o.b. Without realizing it, I had allowed the volume to increase right as "I Will Survive" began full force. My boss stopped at my door, and with a laugh, told me that life couldn't be that bad. The point of my story: Not only is it good dance music, but it can add something to almost every situation in life. So pop it in and enjoy!

3 out of 5 stars Fun, that's about it.......2002-08-07

While some might have this blasting 24/7, I found that is CD is only necessary every so often. It's nice for background music. But with newer remixes of the same songs, I found this kinda dated. Maybe I'm just drawn toward techno/dance music, but this is still a nice cd for those that like the originals.

5 out of 5 stars I'm not gay but ...............2002-04-14

I LOVE this CD set! Great selection of songs, guaranteed to get you on your feet and moving.

It's great I first heard about it on VH1 late in the night... I was all... OH MY GAWD their marketing to the gay men of the world!!! And indeed they are... awesome CD must have.

Album Description

MightyREAL is a 15 volume CD compilation series exploring a very wild, yet musically elusive period in nightclubbing history: 1980 - 1988. This is when Disco, having recently been declared dead by disenchanted tastemakers, went underground to shop for a modern makeover. While on the down low, Disco was reworked into Dance Music. This transformation didn't happen overnight. It was an evolution enjoyed nightly by a thriving BIG ROOM dance scene of happy peppy party people - unwilling to call it quits.

Middle America went home. In their place showed up Models, Hustlers, Dealers, Millionaires, Celebutants, Gay men, Eurotrash, Trannys, Fashion Victims, and the truly Groovy. Everyone met on the dance floor - and a good time was had by all.

MightyREAL is this soundtrack: Disco, Danceable New Wave, Electropop, HiNRG, Eurodisco and pre-House. Here, many on CD for the first time ever, are the original, ultra rare, 12-inch hit singles that ruled the night. Fabulous used to have a sound - MightyREAl is it!

Towards the end of 1983, a new British dance sound arrived on American shores. It found a receptive audience keen to the tight pop sensibility and clever harmonic hooks. The style was spirited and peppy. As the '80s charged on, funky syncopation and a touch of soul were added, further polishing the sound. The Queens' Music I, is the first volume of this second British Invasion.

5 out of 5 stars Very hot entry in the series of full-length 80s 12 mixes, but some problems.......2007-02-27

Upping the nrg on as compared to the "morning music" volume, this edition also includes some very hot mixes remastered on CD that have rarely or never been available before. Most notable for me was the "upducky mix" of Dead or Alive's "brand new lover." Completists have found the 9 minute remix on other compilations, but this flip side to the original 12" never finds its way to CD. However, it should be noted that it fades a hint soon, about 5-7 seconds! Also in the Stock Aitken Waterman production area, there's also the hot 12" of "love in the first degree" by Bananarama and "he ain't no competition" by brother beyond.

There's also the longer 12" version of "we close our eyes" by Go West--it is usually the 5:55 `total overhang' mix that makes it to CD compilations. Bigger problem this time. On the vinyl 12" there is a synth string orchestral intro that last about 20 seconds before the beat kicks in. It's been completely REMOVED from this transfer to CD so the song starts right on the beat! BUMMER. Do they really think fanatical collectors aren't going to notice these things when a CD promises the FULL LENGTH 12" VERSIONS??? Anyway, it is available, with orchestral opening intact on the 3 CD set "Original 80s Remix Box Set".

Plus there are no less than FIVE songs by 80s nrg writing team Ian Levine & Fiachra Trench, including one by the queen of their music, Evelyn Thomas.

Let's just hope all 15 volumes of this series are released, as promised--with more avoidance of edting or fading songs early....

4 out of 5 stars Good movie, good music.......2007-01-18

I saw the movie recently. The cast and acting is much stronger than the script. The music is critical to bringing the movie off. The opening is Van Morrison blaring from a convertible in Queens. Sets the whole tone. Despite this cut's solid place in the cannon, it is hard to find. Took me an hour to search all the Van Morrison play lists on Amazon. When I finally found it, it of course is out of print with a used copy going for thirty clams (another movie reference). So I come here for five bucks and five other great numbers and a bunch of good ones. See the flick, get yourself a toothpick and hit the road. Fun.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great Collection of Early 90's Dance Music.......2005-03-24

This collection mixes several different styles of early 90's dance music (euro-disco, freestyle, house). Here is a track by track review:

        1. "Strike it Up" by Black Box. You can call this "studio" group whatever you want, but we know it is Martha Wash supplying those powerful vocals. A classic.

        2. "Gypsy Woman (She's Homeless)" by Crystal Waters. I like Crystal, even though here droning voice can get a little tiresome at times. Much preferable to this track is her other big hit, "100% Pure Love".

        3. "Set U Free" by Planet Soul. Great song to dance to in a club in the early hours of the morning.

        4. "Total Eclipse of the Heart" by Nicki French. Nicki took out all of the drama and passion that Bonnie Tyler put into this song. Still fun to dance to even though the original is much better.

        5. "Rhythm is a Dancer" by Snap!. There are 2 versions of this song that I know of. The one here that just features the female vocal and another version that also includes a male rap vocal. I like both, but I suppose for this "Disco Queens" CD they chose the version without the male rap vocal.

        6. "I'm Gonna Get You" by Bizarre Inc. A fun, lively dance tune. If you were in clubs in the early 90's, you should remember this tune.

        7. "Back to Life" by Soul II Soul. This act got all kinds of critical praise with their first album. I was never that impressed.

        8. "Justified and Ancient" by The KLF featuring Tammy Wynette. This track is the #1 reason I bought this CD. I love it when new artists take older singers and give them a 2nd shot at Pop stardom (like the Pet Shop Boys did with both Dusty Springfield and Liza Minnelli or like Jack White recently did with Loretta Lynn). The late, great Tammy delivers a fun, campy performance, and you gotta see the video. Fun, fun, fun!

        9. "Together Forever" by Lisette Melendez. This track is the #2 reason I bought this CD. I loved freestyle, and this tune is an excellent example. Too bad it's time came and went.

        10. "Take me in Your Arms" by Lil Suzy. Another freestyle tune, but not as good as the previous track.

        11. "Move This" by Technotronic featuring Ya Kid K. Ya Kid K was a great rapper, but I hardly consider her a "disco diva". A great dance tune, nonetheless.

        12. "More and More" by Captain Hollywood Project. Great tune, great vocal.

        13. "Got a Love for You" by Jomanda. This track is the #3 reason I bought this CD. Loved it back in the day, should have been a much bigger hit in my opinion.

        14. "Can't Get Enough of Your Love" by Taylor Dayne. Taylor had an amazing voice. She was definitely one of my favorite singers during that period and her cover of this Barry White tune is better than the original.

        15. "Let the Beat Hit 'Em" by Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam. By the time this song came out, Lisa's chart success was winding down, and therefore it did not do as well on the charts as some of her earlier hits. A shame, since it is a great song.

        16. "What's Up" by DJ Miko. The orginal was by 4 Non Blondes, who seemed to be one of those very serious, feminist groups. That version, as sung by lead singer Linda Perry, seemed to sum of the feelings of ennui of the X generation during that time. This dance version takes a somewhat depressing song and turns it into a dance tune with a driving beat. Curiously, it works.

The liner notes for this CD are great and I highly recommend this CD.

Dance Queens' disco and postdisco vocal showcases all hit the dance charts, but few people who aren't seriously into dance history will know more than a couple of them. Some of this stuff is very much of its era--it's hard to hear Linda Clifford's 10-minute disco version of "Bridge over Troubled Water" as anything other than over-the-top kitsch, and the extended versions of late-'80s numbers like Cheryl Lynn's "New Dress" carry on their consummately boomy synth-drum patterns too long for casual listening. But compiler David Nathan also turns up some legitimate lost classics, like Chic singer Norma Jean Wright's longing "Saturday" and Vicki Sue Robinson's deliciously polyrhythmic "Hold Tight," a seldom-heard follow-up to "Turn The Beat Around." --Douglas Wolk
