george krantz should not allow anyone 2 redo this song iwas 19 when they were playing this in the gay clubz of new jersey istill have my 12' copy on vinyl tho it iz worn out it iz a great song some one should put this song on a cd with its rainin men so many men so little time and i want 2 break free that would b a realy good cd

Casting/conducting/sound quality.......2006-03-18

This is the 1956 Parsifal, If I could re-Star it I'd give it 2/3 stars based on the compare to 1952 and 54 recordings.
But still this 56 is far superior to most others I'd guess. But not near the stellar casting in '52 and '54.

So Casting/conducting/sound quality, Not near the superb 1952 and 1954 recordings, which I feel are the 2 finest of all the Knappertsbush's Parisfals, and the finest 2 Parsifals EVER. But I have not heard the 1951 KNA which I would suspect is also very good. ...Now inspite of all the glowing reviews on the 60,62,64 "the greatest ever Parsifal" "Look no further", "this is the ONE!" etc.
Excuse but notice none of these reviews mention the finest castings in the 1952, 1954.
Knappertsbusch stoggy/funny tempos for which is a trademark of him, kicked in post 1955.
Not recommended obviously.

Today, Saturday, March 18, 2006 I'll be working on a comparison of the 52 and 54 KNA
so look for a posting of my comments on those tonight here on amazon. I'll make postings on both Archipel releases.
The 2 greatest Parsifal performances.
Bascically its gonna come down to this.
In the 52 you get the outstanding London as Amfortas, who I slightly prefer over Hotter in the 54.
Now in the 54 you get the great Neidlinger (the greatest bass in Wagner) as Klingsor, in the 52 its a very good Herman Uhde.
I'll post comments tonight before midnight.

This is by far the best Parsifal I ever heard. I own 6-7 recordings (including the Kna'62), and happened to listen to another dozen or more, there was no one I could have been fully content with. And this is not about not having first class resources to go with. It is most probably due to a lack of thorough understanding on behalf the performers, especially the conductor, of what's going on. With this recording Kna takes us into heights and depths nobody ever dared to dream of. This is a heavy attack to our soul and it is quite a challange for the listener to keep pace with it during 280 minutes. Kna has an all-star cast here, but I tend to realize that the crew pretty much follows what the captain is capable of doing, and this is a major contributor to the athmosphere which encapsulates this performance. Special mentioning goes however to Dieskau's Amfortas which is a revelation, don't know why he didn't take on this role much more.

This recording is one of Kna's finest. One just has to look at the stellar cast list to realize that this recording is worth the price. The highlight must be J. Grendl's beautiful and expressive reading of Gurnemanz. Vinay is the perfect Parsifal with all his Chilean zeal. Kna's reading is more mature here than on earlier recordings and the sound is perfectly acceptably. This is well worth the price and one of Bayreut's many timeless treasures.
