Get ready for your jazz education. These virgin, unremixed tracks taken from the 1960s Verve vaults were a major influence on Thievery Corporation's Rob Garza and Eric Hilton years before they spun epic documents like The Mirror Conspiracy. Their time capsule is a bubbling, Brazilian soul-jazz blast, starting with the sensuous "Menina Flor" by Stan Getz and Luis Bonfa. Jimmy Smith's "Road Song" is a classic of '60s hard bop, while Kenyon Hopkins's "Hard Latin" shows the kind of groovy organ jazz that was popular in bars from Philly to hot 'Lanta. Things go left with Cal Tjader's "The Fakir," a day-glo Middle Eastern track influenced by Coltrane's "My Favorite Things," while Astrud Gilberto pulls a Nancy Sinatra on another freaky standout, "Light My Fire." Walter Wanderley, Wynton Kelly, Chico Hamilton, and Elis Regina also light up the night, along with your hi-fi. --Ken Micallef

5 out of 5 stars Great *JAZZ* album... TC only selected old tracks........2005-12-01

I find it funny that so many Thievery Corporation fans are reviewing this disc. This is pretty much a JAZZ disc of music from the 50's and 60s with tracks that just happen to be chosen by the Thievery Corporation. There was no sampling or editing, or anything. Just original music from 50 odd years ago. With all that said, I find this compilation to be excellent. If you like Bossa Nova, or some cool laid back jazz, then you'll probably like this disc. The music is lively but light. Give it a try, if you do, all your wildest dreams will come true. Ok, maybe not, but this is one fine CD.

5 out of 5 stars This is where they get their inspiration.......2005-03-13

I remember the first time I listened to a record by Thievery Corp. I became instantly aware of how different their sound is. I could not help wonder where this pair gets their inspiration, and what serves them so well in their constant stream of well engineered sounds.
Well...this is it!
I think they did a great job in letting their public know what inspires them to conceive the sounds they so well create.
The songs in this compilation range from Bossa Nova to early Latin Jazz...a truly remarkable spectrum of early sounds that planted the seed for part of what is now known as loounge music.

5 out of 5 stars Not Your Classic Thievery.......2004-10-26

This CD by all means is not like Thievery's other stuff. When I first bought the album I was a little disappointed. I had boughten "The Richest Man in Babylon" and had fallen in love with these guys. So when I got this CD it just didnt do it for me at first. It was just all jazz tracks. But I took it with me one day to the library to study with and I have to admit it is really a great CD. I am glad I bought it. All the tracks are really amazing once you get into them. But hey if you're not into jazz dont buy this cd.

4 out of 5 stars What's Old Is New Again..........2003-08-09

Bossa Nova, Jazz, Reggae and Lounge-Pop are what the Thievery Corporation is all about. The resurrection of the downtempo-lounge movement of recent years is a reflection of the original musical craze of over 40 years ago. It is nice to see that artists such as Willie Bobo, the Gilbertos, Stan Getz, Sergio Mendes, and other artists that my parents grooved to, have now come full circle for a new generation. Although this music may sound a bit dated to those born after 1985, those who can appreciate music before the MTV age can chill out with a cool drink and some headphones, stereo lounge chair optional. This CD is a nice tribute compilation of various artists and gives us an idea of TC's inspirational roots.

5 out of 5 stars Can't get enough!.......2003-06-11

I first heard this compilation in the Pacific Restaurant in Dublin. I asked the server for the name of the CD and ordered it right away. I'm a boomer and was heavily into the "Top 10". Finally, I've matured beyond that. Thievery has done a great job of placing the music so that it flows along. The instrumentals are catchy enough to linger in your head and complex enough to engage you in multiple listenings. First rate. I'm ordering this for my daughter!

Los Indios Tabahares produced by far the best instrumental music of their times.
This was recorded after the loss of one of the brothers and is good listening music, but does not have the verve of the original group.

5 out of 5 stars First-rate introduction to Brazil's myriad of musical offerings.......2005-07-20

What a shocker - no one has reviewed this CD! I don't even know Portuguese and this is one of my favorite world music albums. A Brit whose name I can't recall followed up his Nu Brazil compilation with this sequel. I can say with complete sincerity that this album has spawned a huge interest in Brazilian music for me, largely because it doesn't limit itself to just one style but tries to show listeners the incredible range and quality of music that the country's artists produce. If you don't like a certain track, skip it: the next one is almost guaranteed to please. My favorites are track 3 on disc 1, track 9 on disc 1, 6, 8, and 9 on disc 2, and the fantastic closer by Tuze de Abreu, a haunting tune that recalls Portuguese fado at its best. A must buy. I usually don't go in for compilations, but this is a notable exception - all in all, a fantastic album.

5 out of 5 stars the best CD you've never heard.......2006-01-15

I asked for this CD for Christmas, but didn't know what to expect. It's fantastic, and prompted me to write my first ever review. The only drawback is that the title track "The Girl from Ipanema" is an instrumental (I suppose paying for the royalities/rights to include the popular version would make the cost prohibitive); for the best version of that song, buy the Getz/Gilberto CD that accompanies this. But be sure to buy THIS CD if you like pleasant music! Who cares if you don't know what they are saying, or don't know Bossa Nova is--I didn't and I love it!

        5 out of 5 stars [...] Review.......2005-09-16

Deep grooves, rich instrumentation and sunny vocals make up Lisa Deveaux's debut release SHAKIN' THAT JAZZ. The project features some of Smooth Jazz's finest players including saxophonist Everette Harp, pianist Bobby Lyle, vocalist Carl Anderson and violinist Karen Briggs. The Chicago-native pursued her music skills and education at Florida A&M University and at the prestigious Herbert Burghoff Studios in New York (Ms. Deveaux holds a BA in entertainment management and musical theatre). Armed with talent and education, she headed for Hollywood hoping to make a difference and that she has... Since her arrival in the City of the Angels, Lisa Deveaux has sung back up with legendary artists such as Barry White and Phyllis Hyman (who became her mentor), and now she's released her very first solo CD, SHAKIN' THAT JAZZ. Filled with classy, cool and romantic contemporary jazz, the breezy new CD spotlights the artist's knack for sophisticated arrangements and strong melodies. "Lazy Monday Afternoon" takes you on a moody island get-away, while the kickin' cover of "Wanna Be Where You Are" gets your groove on, be sure to check out the Everette Harp enhanced, "First Time," as well as the [...] pick "Second Nature" featuring Bobby Lyle and we also love the duet with Carl Anderson, "By Design." Stay in touch with the artist's website this summer for play dates in Southern California to see her unique brand of Smooth Jazz up close and personal. Go Lisa Deveaux! ~Sandy Shore

5 out of 5 stars Simply A Great Album of Quality jazzy Flavours .......2005-04-24

I love this album and for a self financed and promoted independent release this is how to do it, with quality songs, excellent musicianship and great vocals. Lisa Deveaux really shines on this album from the opening number Lazy Monday Afternoon, you know you are in for a aural treat and she does not disappoint. It's quality all the way as she takes us on a musical journey that in my mind ends just a little bit too soon but I'd prefer 9 goods songs than an album of fillers, which this album isn't. Great jazzy flavoured vocals makes me wonder what she'd be like with an acoustic trio, now I am starting to drool. Anita Baker make room as their a new singer in town and she goes by the name of Lisa Deveaux and she's a real gem. Buy this album you won't be sorry in fact you'll very glad you did.
