I'm guessing the guys who wrote these real bad reviews [on here] are bent up bitter groupies, because this album - let me tell YOU..Is as good as it gets [in terms of ska punk]. It goes up to 11 and is only one behind Rancid's 'And Out Come The Wolves'....

My personal fave track would be 'wrong em boyo', or even 'calling in sick'...in fact every track is solid, tight and accurately produced for a band of this ilk.

The whole vibe is still happy-go-lucky and satirical, yet it's so punchy...miles more ummphh than the any millenium mtv punk band today...

Look, if don't get this album and you will never know why this genre was carved in the first place....

Water In My Head saves it.......2002-10-26

Hey, I'm biased... Water In My Head is my favorite ska song of all time. Otherwise I'd give this CD 1 or 2 stars. I can (and have) put that song on repeat, on headphones, for 2 hours straight and come out loving it just as much. It takes a few listens to hear all the different melodies and how well they work together. I especially like the bass line. Anyway, the rest of the songs are OK, not really horrible, but not particularly worth listening to. If you want several good songs, Libido blows this CD away.

If you didn't hate Ska already...you will now........2001-01-27

This album is one big train wreck. I really can't write a long review about it because there isn't much to say. The songs are watered down ska at its worst. It feels like they are just trying to throw something together to get money, not to make good songs. I didn't mind ska before, but this band is why ska gets such a bad rap. Stay away from this album. Save your money and buy something else....anything else...you will get more mileage out of a Yanni album.

Although some of the songs, like "Full Metal Bree," and "Barfly" weren't that great, and the OPIV cover just sucked, I really enjoyed it...it's one of my favorites.

ill mix.......2006-09-09

I was down in South Beach MIA in a real cool record ship I forget the name, but this cd was playing in the store and I had to cop it just from hearing a few songs. I'm honestly not a huge fan of house music, if thats what you'd describe this mix as, but the tracks on here are real cool, all are pretty uptempo but they all have a very laidback vibe about them- always reminds me of Miami, but definitely check this cd out.

Good exercise music!!.......2004-05-08

I bought this cd on a whim, as I mostly dig Buddha Bar in all its compilations..however, the music is very exciting, danceable and I like the different songs. I have since purchased all of the Barfly cds and have not been disappointed, save the first one. that one didn't groove me like the others, but its okay, depending on my mood. I like it, I like it and look forward to other recordings. Actually anything by George V Records has my vote and I have never been disappointed.

Not your typical house mix.......2003-08-25

I recently became a big fan of various recordings that was released on George V Records, namely the Buddha Bar series. A couple of weeks ago, I came across the fourth compilation in the Barfly series (as well as "Barlotti") in the used cd bins. I knew "Barfly IV" wasn't going to be another "Buddha Bar" but I didn't know how different it was going to be. I bought it on a whim. After listening to it, I was originally not to keen on it since I am not really a fan of house music anymore. Part of the cd I felt the music started to become a bit on the repetitive side. I decided to give this cd another listen and found myself grooving along to the music. The music on "Barfly IV" is definitely not your typical house music mix. The song selection certainly isn't predictable as opposed to most mix cds released on any American record label (i.e Ultra Records). Although I am not really big on soul and funk music, the songs chosen for this compilation wasn't too bad. I really enjoyed the first three songs on the cd. They really kicked off the mood of the cd which is to get the listener to dance. Listening to "Barfly IV" makes me feel like I am at the actual Parisian nightclub. It just has a really cool, chic vibe to the cd. Although "Barfly IV" can't compete with my beloved "Buddha Bar" series, I must admit that I'm glad that I gave the cd another chance. I wish dance mix cds were more like "Barfly" and less like "Ultra Dance".

Best of the Barfly Series.......2004-04-28

After listening to many weaker compilations of house music, I am suprised after the five years since the Barfly music series started that no one has recommended this CD. These CD's have an excellent blend of Latino, R&B, funk, house influences that makes these the best house music recordings since I was in the basements on the Southside of Chicago in the early eighties where homies were creating the music with Casio and Gemini machines. I wondered if maybe it was just me who liked this music but anytime I have casually played these CD's people are always asking where the music comes from. As a fitness instructor the music has always been a big hit in my classes. I honestly think that most of the househeads fell asleep on this series and its a shame. Although all the CD's in this series is excellent, this one's my favorite; it kinda dares you not to dance when its pumpin'and I love the strong R+B influence on the tracks,you hear real singing,horns and even some guitars to make the constant technobeat feel more natural. If you are looking for real house check this one out,if you prefer more of the constant bang,bang, of trance or just don't really like to dance skip it.

World-wide beats - The BEST Groove.......2002-10-29

I find myself travelling to various different European club settings (e.g. Australia, England, Paris, Ibiza, etc.. and everytime I return, I find that I must use this CD in order to transition myself back to my boring world at home. It is an album that takes you away and grooves you. It reminds me a lot of my favorite club in Brisbane, Australia and one of the old school DJs that used to play there (DJane G.). Hits right at home. You WILL love it.

L. A. latin nights...........2001-08-20

Having bought this wonderful cd I expanded my collection of cd's containing groovy latin/Brazilian orientated sounds and beats. It is the first compilation out of two. "Barfly" is the name of a real cool Jet set club in L.A. "Barfly" differs a lot from "Barfly 2" which is much more classic soullike House tracks with deep black vocals on the tracks. This cd is mainly clubtunes with afroamerican latinbeats and you can really feel the warm latin summernights coming in over you. Highly recommendable for those who love latin house!

Awesome World Dance Mix.......2004-06-19

This CD is a CD of great electronica dance beat and rhythms of the world a definite sophisticated blend of what the world has to offer those who love great music for Listening and Dance. The mix of music will pump you and move your senses. The mixes/re-mixes are Hot and original, some too short but the 17 cuts pay tribute to world rhythms. As short as some may be they are still hot. I can only imagine if they had chosen to extend the time on their selections....less cuts but the money would have been on the re-mixes. There is one tribute to the Great Late Celia Cruz of CUBA. Various cuts are a mix of Latin, Jazz, Brazilian, Afro Cuban and the use of piano in "Half Bay Moon" is......well you got to hear it !!! It's chillen sophisticated sense that is worldly and moving all at once. If you love dance and rhythm...a must have......But, If you never wondered.....what else could be out there in the world out side your realm of choice presented locally or on the radio...then this CD will do that for sure. Enjoy...It's big world of music waiting for you.

Album Description

Norman, is actually the name of the character both Onry and Barfly (both members of Seattle's colossal Oldominion crew) have cast themselves as. More accurately they each portray polar opposite influences within the mind of their character. Though conceptual, this duo's debut album, "Polarity" is only loosely conceptual.

Current trends in rap music find groups like Anticon brushing off their art textbooks and expounding on the virtues of creative license while at the opposite end of the spectrum you'll find your M.O.P.s exercising a thug's right to be your favorite rapper. Norman credibly fuses modern hip hop's arthouse tendencies with traditional rap's more street oriented themes, while carefully avoiding either extreme.

This is pure northwest. I've lived here in Seattle for my entire eighteen years, and the darkness that is all throughout this album fits the city perfectly. This album is a concept album about some guy named Norman, who according to Onry Ozzborn "is the kind of guy who never listened to LL, Godsmack and Alice Cooper are what are in his headphones". The album breaks away from that at points, like on "Hiphop.Ver.1.7 " where Onry and Barfly send out a diss to east coast backpack MCs and everyone else in hip-hop who can't get used to Oldominion's weirdness. It comes full circle, like at the end when Onry and Barfly are rapping to lonely old Norman, telling "him to put the gun down".
This is one of my favorite hip-hop records ever. The only hip-hop album I can think of that has anything like the darkness and emotion in this is Tupac's Makaveli. Cop this now.

Barfly is a great local band from Minneapolis, MN. They have their own great unique sound and their music is something that I can really enjoy. If you are ever in the Minneapolis area, I would suggest looking to see if these guys are playing cause they are great live.
