Sly & The Family Stone might have psychedelicized soul music, but Marvin Gaye personalized it. Although the powers-that-were Motown didn't even want to release the record, the unexpected success of What's Going On, issued in 1971, inspired Stevie Wonder, Curtis Mayfield, and just about every other black artist on the planet to take greater responsibility for their music and its meaning. Gaye co-wrote the songs and produced the album, flavoring it with layer upon layer of his own multi-tracked vocals, oceans of hand percussion, strings, flutes, and jazzy horn solos. Spacey and loose as a spliff-fueled Sunday afternoon jam in the park, the nine songs all played like a hit single. The title track--inspired by his brother's return from the Vietnam War--and the obvious social commentary of "Inner City Blues (Make Me Wanna Holler)" and "Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology)" actually were hit singles. Two other tracks ("Wholly Holy" and "Save the Children") would inspire hit covers by Aretha Franklin and Diana Ross, respectively. Nevertheless, What's Going On sounds as fresh today as it did the week that it came out. Its one of the greatest albums ever made !
A Top Ten.......2007-06-10
It was America's time to stop and finally ask the question, what is going on? And now with another war raging in the Middle East, the question is still relevant. And still Marvin's spiritual answers remain the only hope for this world. A thought provoking operatic flow resulting in Marvin Gaye's masterpiece, and most redeeming effort.
One of the best ever in any genre........2007-04-02
One of the few benefits of getting old(er) is the historical perspective that comes with the privilege. For instance, it is one thing to read that this record was, in its time, unique - that it was the very first of its time - a full length soul album dealing with social issues. Curtis had, if I recall correctly, released a couple of great singles. But there was no album. However, when What's Going on was released it was a revelation and a revolution, and to think that Marvin had to fight Motown in order to get it done! Over the last forty-seven year there are many special moments that I recall as special. Obviously the first time I heard the Beatles stands out. The Beatles on Ed Sullivan, Clapton, Jimi, the electrified Dylan on Like a Rolling Stone, Pet Sounds, Pepper, Kind of Blue, Led Zeppelin, In Utero and Thriller - milestones all. What's Going on belongs with these as a moment of great importance in the history of popular music. Remember, this was 1971. Less than a decade earlier popular R&B consisted of Stubborn Kind of Fellow and I'll be Doggone. Fabulous songs but miles away from the brilliant relevance of the title track, Mercy Mercy me, Inner City Blues, Right on or Flying High. What's Going on constitutes a 90 degree turn for Marvin and for popular urban black music. If you are reading this you do not need me to describe the music! Two years later Marvin released Let's Get it on. That's another story.

Marvin Gaye's What's Going On may be the most powerful soul record ever made. On this Deluxe Edition, the original recording is embellished with an alternate Detroit Mix of the album (which is almost equally strong) and a previously unreleased recording of Gaye's live performance at the Kennedy Center in 1972. It also includes brilliant liner notes, song lyrics, and a mini-essay by Smokey Robinson, who calls What's Going On his favorite album of all time. The raw emotionality of the live disc further demonstrates Gaye's commitment to his own sentiments and captures the longing and sadness that permeate the album. Gaye went into uncharted R&B territory on What's Going On: leaving love ballads behind, he explored social commentary from an intimate personal perspective. The world weighed heavy on his heart, and the album brings home the confusion of the Vietnam era, when America the Beautiful began to seem a bit ugly. Armed with only his heart and his voice, Marvin Gaye took on Uncle Sam, and won over the hearts of many Americans. --Lizz Mendez BerryCustomer Reviews:
THE POWER OF WORDS.......2007-06-23
WHAT'S GOING ON IS MARVIN GAYE'S GREATEST MASTERPIECE!.......2006-12-27
What can I say about the legendary Marvin Gaye that hasn't already been said? Prior to "WHAT'S GOING ON," Marvin was feeling very disgusted and depressed at where he was at during this point in his career. Marvin wanted more control in the studio and wanted to have more say as to how the musical arrangements would be handled in his songs. It would be on this album, that Marvin would finally let loose and tell the world what was really on his mind that has been bottled in his head for so many years. This is Marvin's message for the whole world! Janet Jackson once called Marvin Gaye "OUR JOHN LENNON!" I believe thats a very appropriate statement to make about Marvin Gaye THE LEGEND! In my opinion, "WHAT'S GOING ON" is an outstanding album! Every single song track is nothing short of outstanding and brilliant!
I will list and briefly review all the song tracks in their original exact running order as follows: DISC ONE You have the original LP release on 21 May 1971 and the original Detroit mix on 5 April 1971. I wil be reviewing the original LP release on 21 May 1971. (1.) "What's Going On," (Outstanding! brilliant! Superb! What a song! What a great way to begin this legendary album! This is by far, Marvin's greatest contribution to all of mankind! This would be the song that would pretty much say it all! What an extremely emotional and powerful song! Marvin's Lead Vocals in this song sound as if he is truly trying to plead with everyone by asking a simple question! I love this song so much!) (2.) "What's Happening Brother," (Outstanding! Brilliant! Superb! This is another great Gaye number! This is actually Marvin's Welcome home message for his younger brother Frankie! Frankie had just returned home from Vietnam and could not find work! Marvin decided to put these experiences into a song which would result into a beautiful well arranged number! This song has so much power and meaning! I love this song dearly as well!) (3.) "Flying High (In The Friendly Sky)," (Outstanding! Brilliant! Superb! What another great song! This is one album that Marvin NEVER LETS UP! This is another beautifully well arranged song! Matrvin's Lead Vocals are breathtaking in this one!) (4.) "Save The Children," (Outstanding! Brilliant! Superb! If there was ever a great song that had a message for everyone's children, it would be this song! This song has to be one of the most emotional, most powerful and most incredible song I have ever heard! You can actually feel Marvin's pleads through his pain and cries in this song! This is one REAL EYE OPENER! I love this song!) (5.) "God Is Love," (Outstanding! Brilliant! Superb! This is Marvin shining in God's eyes! This is one beautiful song! I love the lyrics to this song, it has so much meaning!) (6.) "Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology)," (Outstanding! Brilliant! Superb! Another great Gaye number! You can actually feel the power in the music! Marvin's blistering Lead Vocals are breathtaking in this one! I love this one as well!) (7.) "Right On," (Outstanding! Brilliant! Superb! Another great Gaye number! I love Marvin's Lead Vocals combined with the brilliant musical arrangements in this song! Another great song I love dearly!) (8.) "Wholy Holy" (Outstanding! Brilliant! Superb! This is one of my most favorite songs in this album! Coincidently, it is also Aretha Franklin's as well especially since she recorded this song on her Gospel album "AMAZING GRACE" from 1972. This is a great song! I love it!) and (9.) "Inner City Blues (Make Me Wanna Holler)." (Outstanding! Brilliant! Superb! Another great Gaye number! I love the musical arrangements and the great beat in this song! Marvin, as usual, sings this song with ease and grace! This is one great song indeed! A very appropriate way to conclude a great legendary album!) DISC TWO contains Marvin's live performance at The Kennedy Center on 1 May 1972. Rather than list and briefly review all the song tracks from this live concert, I will just say that this concert was well performed by Marvin and you should buy this set and listen to this performance for yourself. I feel confident that you will enjoy this performance as much as I have. Also contained on DISC TWO are the original single versions of "What's Going On," "God Is Love" and "Sad Tomorrows." Overall, this is an outstanding 2-CD set! Every single song track is nothing less than outstanding and brilliant!
As you can see, this is a treasure album that is definitely worth purchasing that he or she should definitely own as a valuable part of his or her personal music collection. This priceless gem will be enjoyed and cherished for many more years to come, NOW AND FOREVER!
In closing, I read in a book recently that Motown founder Berry Gordy, Jr. had second thoughts and did not want to release "WHAT'S GOING ON!" I also read that Marvin had many heated arguments with Mr. Gordy concerning this subject! Reading on, I read that it was Smokey Robinson that was the saving grace and got between the two! It was also Smokey that talked Berry into releasing the album! We should all be thankful to Smokey for this one! Had it not have been for Smokey, I'm not sure that "WHAT'S GOING ON" would have ever seen its day of release until years later! Because of "WHAT'S GOING ON," Marvin Gaye's legacy is well secured and will live on FOREVER! Marvin Gaye will NEVER BE FORGOTTEN! Here's to you Marvin! R.I.P. Marvin Pentz Gay II, Born on 2 April 1939, Died 1 April 1984. Thanks for reading my review and I hope you enjoyed reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it for your reading pleasure. I also hope that you will read all of my other reviews in the near future when time permits. Marvin Gaye Lives! Long Live Rock n' Roll! Rock out always and take care. Forever in Rock, J.L.

the best, and if you buy it, buy this 2-cd edition.......2005-11-03
it gives me goosebumps ever time, always with a different effect--I can cry, feel happy, think about religion, think about history, relax, or get agitated...
the songs are good individually, but the album flows together so seemlessly...this 2-cd set is worth purchasing over the single album version--kind of a lesson for us beginners in music production. the original mix or the detroit mix? probably neither any better than the other but you can hear how much is fine-tuned with strings and production tricks in musical production...
Brilliant album..........2005-10-25

Of all the life-affirming music made in response to Hurricane Katrina, this is perhaps the most radical achievement--a recontextualizing of Marvin Gaye's early-'70s classic in the wake of the devastation of New Orleans. Joining the Crescent City's leading brass band are an array of guest singers who give the interplay a different dynamic from Gaye's silky sophistication. From the harder edge that Public Enemy's Chuck D gives the opening title track through the redemptive prophecy provided by Guru on the closing "Inner City Blues (Make Me Wanna Holler)," the album takes the spirit of Gaye's social commentary and adds a contemporary twist. Among the other highlights, Bettye LaVette wrings every ounce of soul from "What's Happening Brother," Ivan Neville leads the call-and-response spirituality of "God Is Love," and the Dirty Dozen transform "Save the Children" into a symphony of syncopation and saxophones. Released to mark the first anniversary of the hurricane, with some proceeds benefitting relief efforts, the album deserves to have the staying power of Gaye's original. --Don McLeeseAlbum Description
On August 29, the first anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, The Dirty Dozen Brass Band will release their reinterpretation of Marvin Gaye's classic LP What's Going On. Thirty-five years after its original release, the political and social themes of the album are just as relevant as ever. Along with many others along the Gulf Coast, the members of the Dirty Dozen Brass Band lost their homes to Katrina. Their take on What's Going On is not only an attempt to express their feelings about this tragedy and other current events, but also a tribute to the spirit of their hometown of New Orleans.Guest vocalists Chuck D, Ivan Neville, G. Love, Guru and Bettye LaVette contribute to album, and a portion of the proceeds from the sale of each copy of What's Going On will go to the Tipitina's Foundation, benefiting the music community of New Orleans.

A vital and heartfelt tribute to the people and city of New Orleans.......2006-08-30
The Dirty Dozen Brass take on Marvin Gaye's classic LP and do it up N'awlins style. At the same time, they make the point that the problems--war, poverty, ecological disaster, drug abuse, racism--that Gaye sang about 30 years ago are still prevalent. However, this album is anything but a downer. Like the New Orleans tradition of the funeral march, in which the band plays a dirge on the way out to the cemetary and party music on the way back, the Dozen give us a reason to dance all over our troubles, as Pete Townshend once put it. Get this album today (proceeds benefit NOLA musicians) and start dancing.

A Chorus Line may be better known, but Dreamgirls was a towering achievement for director Michael Bennett. Loosely based on the Supremes' story, the 1982 musical told a typical show-biz tale of fame, backbiting, and survival. As is often the case for one-night only events, the cast in this concert version (recorded in New York on September 24, 2001) is led by an eye-popping assortment of Broadway powerhouses: Lillias White (The Life), Audra McDonald (Ragtime, Marie Christine), and Heather Headley (Ragtime). McDonald reveals a previously undisclosed comic streak, while Headley confirms her status as a rising star. Reprising the role of Effie Melody White (created by Jennifer Holliday), White belts the classic "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going." But the beauty of Dreamgirls is that it's so packed with catchy, Motown-influenced R&B numbers that each lead can sink her teeth into some prime material and get a turn in the spotlight. This double-CD set really makes you wish you'd been there when the show was recorded: you can hear the crowd going berserk at times, and the temptation is strong to do the same thing in the comfort of your living room. --Elisabeth VincentelliCustomer Reviews:

Not the real "DREAM" experience.......2007-04-04
Forget about the film sountrack. Get this CD set. And it's far better than the original cast recording which goes lacking. More songs and more everything that makes a live performance just what it is. Live (compared to film where anything can be done to enhance a performance!) -- the energy, the excitement and the performances make this a rare treat for anyone wanting to share in the real DREAM experience.
Isn't a full Broadway revival long over due. But wait: I've heard rumors that a rvial may be "in the works. I certainly hope so. Maybe this time it will receive the Tony award it deserved in the first place.

Irresistible.......2005-07-29
Rodgers and Hammerstein's musicals dominated Broadway in the 1940s and 1950s, and American musical theater has produced no more consistently eloquent and durable voice than Richard Rodgers. From his fertile genius flowed a surprising number of memorable songs, many of which have passed into and become an accepted and beloved part of modern American culture.
This well-filled CD (77:36) features symphonic arrangements (all but two by Robert Russell Bennett) of the music from Oklahoma (1943), Carousel (1945), State Fair (1945), South Pacific (1949), The King and I (1951), Flower Drum Song (1958), and The Sound of Music (1959). All the great tunes are here in suites from each musical that average 10-12 minutes in length. The arrangements are expert: rich, varied, and colorful. The performances are polished, idiomatic, and irresistible; Kunzel and this orchestra are thorough masters of this kind of material. And Telarc's sound (recorded 1991) is state-of-the-art (engineer Michael Bishop deserves to take a bow).
In short, there's nothing here to cloud your listening pleasure (the only quibble I can imagine is that some of your favorites may not last long enough), so it's hard for me to envision anyone with ears and a taste for music who wouldn't enjoy this CD. Warmly recommended. Finally, if you like this one as much as I do, you might want to know that the same team has produced a companion volume, the Lerner & Lowe Songbook for Orchestra.
"Some Enchanted Evening" with Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops.......2003-12-26
This CD has all the scores arranged chronologically. The OKLAHOMA! suite that opens this disc promises a feast for the senses, Kunzel ably evokes the territory's "bright, golden haze" in the way he conducts the various excerpts, until you feel the atmosphere of the country charm of the show, and the love-affair between Curly and Laurey. Then, in CAROUSEL, he ably evokes the pathos of this tragic R&H masterwork, especially in the truncated Waltz, but he leads a wonderfully melodic "June is Bustin' Out All Over" and a devotional "You'll Never Walk Alone." Although this suite does not include Billy's pivotal Soliloquy, it includes "If I Loved You" as an expression of his love for Julie, and within minutes you could be soaked in the ups and downs of the show's mood.
After a brief STATE FAIR suite, with sweeping renditions of "It Might As Well Be Spring" and "It's a Grand Night for Singing", we are brought into the disc's showstopping highlights. These highlights are the excerpts from SOUTH PACIFIC, THE KING AND I, and THE SOUND OF MUSIC. But yet Kunzel conducts the rest of the disc until the various suites amount to a series of showstoppers. These three suites present wonderfully-arranged versions of their many familiar classic songs, with well-played solos. The SOUTH PACIFIC suite presents the songs in chronological order, yet preserves the atmosphere of the show at the same time. Kunzel ably brings out the romance in "Some Enchanted Evening" and "Younger than Springtime," and contrasts it with the exotic and dreamlike "Bali Hai'i" and the comic "There is Nothing like a Dame" and "I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Outa My Hair". Although the suite ends quietly with a reprise of "Dites-Moi" rather than the reprise of "Some Enchanted Evening," within minutes we are swept into the KING AND I suite. Kunzel ably brings out the Oriental pathos in this score, and he captures the warmth of Anna's rapport with the King's Siamese children in "Getting to Know You", and with the King himself in "Shall We Dance." There is also romance in the love ballads "I Have Dreamed" and "We Kiss in a Shadow." Similarly, in the selection from THE SOUND OF MUSIC, Kunzel conducts this until the orchestra soaks itself in the atmosphere of this Austrian R&H score. This SOUND OF MUSIC suite has more of a feel of the score compared to the bonus track on Sony's reissued version of the Broadway recording. You can almost feel as if you are following the progress of the Trapp family and how it lifts its spirits with the joy of music. Kunzel gives us a soaring version of the title song, and spirited versions of "Do-Re-Mi" and "My Favourite Things." He balances it with the open-air quality of "Edelweiss" and "The Lonely Goatherd." Although this suite could have included "Something Good," the love ballad written for the film, the three recollections of the songs that were cut from the movie only last for a while. And, the towering version of "Climb Every Mountain" crowns this portion of the disc, and this sumptuously-produced recording. But, I should also mention the infectuous FLOWER DRUM SONG medley, where Kunzel turns this underrated score into a work of art, until it convinces you to buy the cast recording. And, don't forget about the brief CINDERELLA WALTZ, too, when Kunzel conducts it magically, until you feel like you are in the company of Cinderella and the Prince. He is able to show how this R&H score marked a comeback for R&H after the failiures of Me and Juliet, and Pipe Dream.
Overall, this glorious Rodgers and Hammerstein recording is guarunteed to make you want to pucker your lips out for a whistle or sing along (to paraphrase another revew for Kunzel's Disney Spectacular disc) - even if this recording is music only, and as long as you know the words to the songs (and you might know a large handful of them already.) There is always a certain magic in this fine CD that makes you feel like you're sitting in the theatre watching these musicals, until it makes you feel like it is truly, to borrow two R&H song titles, "Some Enchanted Evening" and "Something Wonderful" to be in Kunzel's company for this R&H offering. It would certainly be one recording that could make you feel willing to buy the complete cast recordings of the shows. And I guaruntee that it will make you feel willing to pull out your existing copies of the cast recordings to listen to them again. I also guaruntee that it will be a cornerstone in any Rodgers and Hammerstein collection, just as it is in mine. Recommended heartily to any Rodgers and Hammerstein enthusiast and to fans of Erich Kunzel's work. And, you can play it while reading the Richard Rodgers biography, Musical Stages, until Rodgers himself would count this as his favourite disc in the afterlife.
By the way, most of the arrangements for the suites on this CD were done by the veteran R&H orchestrator Robert Russell Bennett, and it surely adds to the appeal of this recording. This itself is enough to amount to the icing on the cake, since Kunzel conducts them well on here, and since this recording still allows the suites to have the original theatrical atmosphere. And, although this recording is like the Mauceri collection of the Rodgers & Hammerstein overtures in compiling orchestral suites of Rodgers & Hammerstein, I think that I like the Kunzel recording even more because Kunzel has more magic in his conducting of these suites.

In 1985, "We Are the World" sold 4 million singles and 3 million albums with an inclusiveness that allowed Michael Jackson, Bob Dylan, Kenny Rogers, and Cyndi Lauper to share space on the same charity anthem. Another African crisis 16 years later--the spread of AIDS across the continent--and the aftermath of the September 11, 2001, attacks prompt this well-meaning remake of Marvin Gaye's 1971 Vietnam-era protest. Rather than the pop unity of the earlier record, however, this 48-minute EP breaks down into nine separate mixes and mix-and-match rosters aimed at different radio and club formats. After all, global village or not, Bono, Nelly, Jennifer Lopez, Scott Weiland, and Moby couldn't possibly coexist for four minutes, right? (Hearing Michael Stipe ride Jermaine Dupri's pop/hip-hop track for even a line raises intriguing possibilities for the R.E.M. singer.) The record's handful of lyric substitutions are clumsy, with "Picket lines won't block our way" forcing the listener to ponder just who's protesting in favor of the disease. But coexecutive producer Bono's political sharpness continues to be on point. --Rickey WrightCustomer Reviews:
God almighty - what IS going on???.......2006-02-12
So, the radio version is up first, which has well known political persona's like Justin Timberlake and Fred Durst telling us how bad the world is. The gimmick of the video is that they're all blindfolded. Pity those blindfolds didn't all slip and we could have had the world's first mass hanging. Certainly clean the music world up a bit. Anyway, it's rubbish, a poor attempt at a milestone hit. But, oh Lord, there's more to come.
The "London" version (recorded in, ah, London. Lucky it wasn't Skegness) has the likes of Bono and Chris Martin from dull uber-band Coldplay. You will no longer fear Hell after you hear Chris Martin sing this song. It is quite easily the worst thing you'll hear all year. Keep trying to hit those high notes, Chris. Gaaaaah.
And next, it's your pal and mine - Moby. Now, spooky fact, Moby used to make rock records, and damn fine ones as well. These days he's happy to put out any old new-age plinky plonky crap, get some woman to sing over it, put the song on about twenty adverts for supermarkets and Vauxhall cars and count the cash. Somehow I think the "message" got lost in this one..
But if the message got lost in Moby's, it's well and truly baffled and lying in its own urine when it comes to Fred Dursts attempt. Words can't express how bad this actually is - because it's EXACTLY the same as every other Limp Bizkit song. There's loud guitars. Fred speaks in that stupid "I can't sing, so I'll speak the words I don't shout" voice, and then bellows at you. I can really see this comforting the victims of either AIDS or 9/11 or whatever the Hell they're pretending this is for. Yeah, when you think of mending broken hearts and wounds that don't heal - you think Limp Bizkit.
There's a few other versions thrown on here, all from faceless hip hop puppets and pop idiots, all singing a song they don't deserve to and singing for a cause they probably don't understand. It's a sad state of affairs when THIS is what gets passed off as an event in music.
And you would think that they would at least put the original version on here? I dunno, for good measure, or good taste or something? No - that would make sense. "What's Going On?" You, me and every person on this record have absolutely NO idea.

Great Cover .......2005-05-23
People, quit complaning about the rappers because they did a great job. Especially Nas. I bet half of you haven't listen to what they said.
I really enjoyed hearing Christina Aguilera, Alicia Keys, Destiny's Child, Monica, Usher, Nas, Eve, And Faith Evans on this album. I think the best track on this album was the RnB remix.
I hope you guys buy this because your money is going to a great cause. I give credit to everyone who was in this for taking time to do this for free.
Great cover, for a Great cause.......2003-03-13
As far as covers go this one isn't too bad. It's charitable aims are very admirable and even though I don't care for about 89% of the artists who took part in it, I can at least tip my hat for taking part and it shows that they care about other things than joining the multi-platinum sales number 1 singles club. They actually cared about something important. This along with the other charity cd's that came out after September11th was the true musical highlight of 2001.
The Bad
You won't hear any scathing criticism here, but I do have one question: Do rappers understand the concept of a cover? Like Li'l Kims part in Lady Marmalade the rap parts are original material. Nothing totally wrong with it, just a wonderment. Also some of the mixes, particularly the aptly named Fred Durst reality check mix(aptly named because if there is anybody in the music industry in desperate need of a reality check its Fred Durst) aren't that great.
The Ugly
Err umm well you make think some of the artists are ugly so I'll leave that to you.
Brilliant song... and it's for a good cause too!.......2002-12-31
1. Dupri Original Mix - The best. It's the original and it rocks. I love all the parts on the song, especially Britney's part and Fred Durst's part.
4. Fred Durst's Reality Check Mix - I don't usually like rock music, but this is a really good version of the song. I love that Elijah Blue guy's voice. He's really cool.
7. Dupri R&B Mix - Cool mix different to the original. It has more rap and R&B stars on it, then the original mix.
This is for a good cause, so buy it!!!
More Than Just An Incredible Song.......2002-09-12
The beautiful reconstruction of the seventies soul/funk classic is superb. The former clashes of the music industry line come together to prove their point (we really *can* just get along.. punks and pop singers together are all children need to demonstrate that, sadly). Whether you're a rap, rock, pop, soul or indie fan, the mixes offer what the single may lack. Fred Durst's mix is pleasantly loud, while some of the others slow the tempo to convey their message.
It's the perfect blend of hard, soft, happy, sad, and everything else necessary to encourage tolerance. Buy this!

'Miles of Marvin'-The Journey.......2006-03-14
It's OK !.......2006-03-13
But there are exceptions.
So when I first heard about the project of a tribute to Grover Washington , I thought how do you cover God, because Grover was like a God to contemporary jazz.
WOW! What an album! OK, nobody had to write any songs on this, but they all put their own spin on each song and did a fabulous job.
Jason Miles produced this fresh off two grammy nominees for his 2000 release tribute CD to Ivan Lins ( Sting won for his version of "She Walks This Earth" while Grover was nominateed for "Cameleo " ).
First the lineup is just stellar: Regina Belle , Gerald Albright, Russ Freeman, Ronnie Laws with Sounds Of Blackness, Herbie Mann, Tom Schuman and Jeff Mironov, Dave Koz, Everette Harp, Steve Cole, George Duke, Mark Whitfield, Richard Elliot, Jay Beckenstein with Dean Brown, Paul Taylor with Peter White, Chuck Loeb with Dave Mann, Chaka Khan, Greg Philinganes with the New York Philharmonic String Section, and Michael Brecker, Randy Brecker, Joe Sample with Joey Defrancesco.
If you'd pick up an album with all of these guys on it and it wasn't all Grover tunes you'd buy it! In fact you'd probably have a huge grin on your face and tell half the store about your lucky find on the way to the cash register. So now imagine all these guys playing their version of all these great Grover tunes like: "Just The Two Of Us" , "Winelight", " East River Drive" , "Inner City Blues ", " Come Morning " , " Let It Flow" and more.
I can see you smiling and saying yeah I'd buy it and you should. " To Grover , with Love " is magnificent ! It's good. It's great.
It's deadly gorgeous !!

Arguably "The Best" English "Merry Widow ".......2006-09-12
The "problem" is that this June Bronhill, Reid, and Hassel version is hard to find on CD. For example, this CD is made in Holland and "there is one left" so it says on Amazon. But, if you can find it, I think it would be very much worth a listen. Then, after hearing it, if you think there's a "better" Merry Widow, please let ME know! Thanks. Email:boland7214@aol.
