5 out of 5 stars A nearly flawless collection.......2007-06-03

"Anthology" expands on Best of Shooting Star: Touch Me Tonight: by including songs from Shooting Star's later albums on a second disc. This compilation covers the years 1980-2006. It's only true flaw is that "Flesh And Blood" was left off, which is real shame since it's their second best song (after "Last Chance"). The packaging is rather cheesy, but it's really hard to fault a compilation as excellent as this for that.

5 out of 5 stars Gizzaro.......2003-04-05

I 1st saw Shooting Star in the spring of 1981, and have seen them probabally ~12 times since then. This was the 1st ablum that I bought of their's and I have since bought the CD. If you like hard drivin' R&R, buy the CD. And if you are in the Kansas City area, keep your ear's tuned to 99.7 ky and they may announce that they are playing somewhere. If you want to check out what the band is doing now, check out there web site (shootingstarband.com). If you buy this cd, you'll be back to buy more. Maybe I'm still living in the 70's and 80's, but there's nothing wrong with that if you like R&R. Do your self a favor and Check it out!

5 out of 5 stars Kickass rock from start to finish.......2006-10-13

I'm sure I'm not the only one who came across this incredible band through hearing "Last Chance". That song is an absolute classic and probably one of the greatest songs ever written. So many bands that made it big have nothing on Shooting Star. This band is so under-rated it's ridiculous.

"You've Got What I need", "Higher", "Bring It On", oh no need to list specifics the entire album is incredible. You won't find any fillers on this one. Much better than any album with one hit and about 5 or 6 fillers and 2 or 3 average songs. Incredible vocals, guitar work, everything...I couldn't praise this masterpiece enough. What's wrong with the world where a band like this could slip through the cracks?

5 out of 5 stars Great Debut Album From Shooting Star.......2003-12-22

This is a great debut album from Shooting Star. The group emerged with its sound and identity fully formed, and the songs are great. The opener, "You Got What I Need", shows Shooting Star as an AOR Outlaws compared to Survivor's Atlanta Rhythm Section, and "Bring It On" and the classically-paced "Last Chance" have inspired me to make New Year's resolutions to eat healthier and get more exercise. Get this one, SILENT SCREAM, HANG ON FOR YOUR LIFE, III WISHES, and LEAP OF FAITH: LET'S ROLL all at once.

5 out of 5 stars The way rock was meant to be.......2002-01-30

"Shotting Star" is the first release of the band Shooting Star. This album is an exquite compillation of beautifully crafted "hard rock" songs comparable, or better, to projects of contemporaries such as Boston, Kansas, or Triumph. The arrangement of intricate guitar riffs, coupled with melodic voice lines makes this album a classic, and a must for any one's collection. You will most certainly not be disappointed.

    5 out of 5 stars Superb example.......2002-01-21

An awesome example of the '80's rock. This album never got the airplay it deserved and is by far much more deserving than the likes of many bands of the 80's who obviously were pushed on the radio by large record companies who promote bands with one hit albums

5 out of 5 stars 5-PLUS STARS for this one!!.......2001-11-28

This awesome debut album (finally available on c.d.)is a must own for fans of quality rock/pop of the 70's/80's (such as Boston/Foreigner/Journey/Styx/REO,etc....)EVERY SONG is fantastic!!You may remember "Last Chance" from the radio-but trust me-this entire album is a CLASSIC!!As usual-radio dropped the ball by not supporting this one whole-heartedly!SHOOTING STAR could have been as huge as the aformentioned heavyweights with proper backing!Their other releases were pretty solid,too-but this is definately where to start. ENJOY!!

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A decent overview, but I'd have done it differently.......2004-06-23

My biggest gripe with this greatest hits package is that the person who picked the songs did not seem to be familiar with the band's better material over their five album lifespan. This happens a lot with greatest hits packages. Most of the songs are no-brainers. Last Chance is one of the greatest FM rock songs ever and Tonight, Breakout, Straight Ahead and Flesh and Blood are all what I would consider hugely underrated. My problem is with the inclusion of You've Got What I Need and Train Rolls On. Both are decent songs, but I'd have included Are You Ready, Do You Feel Alright or Summer Sun (which probably would have made it had it not been on something other than the band's original label.) The previously unreleased songs are always nice to find on compilations such as these and Christmas Together fits the bill here. Not a song that fits your mood year round, but after hearing Do They Know It's Christmas ad nauseum every holiday season, Christmas Together is at least something fresh. As for the other previously unreleased song, I read somewhere that Touch Me Tonight is the bands highest charting song ever. This speaks volumes about the lack of respect Shooting Star got in what should have been their heyday. Again, a decent song, but nothing special. If you are an old fan of the band like I am, you may be better served by buying the five cd's and making your own compilation, but if you're new to Shooting Star, this would be a good place to start.

If you like Kansas, Thin Lizzy, Starz, Triumph, and the like, then give this a listen. Stand out cuts are Tonight, Flesh and Blood, Hollywood, and Touch Me Tonight. Heck, the Christmas Song is even pretty catchy!

LEAP OF FAITH: LET'S ROLL is yet another great album from the underrated Kansas City band Shooting Star. The song "Let's Roll" was inspired by the last words of a passenger on the doomed flight on 9/11, but the lines "I'd rather put up a fight than to lose control" and "I'd rather go down in flames than to lose my soul" are also my statements of intent not to get conned into buying music by artists whose views I do not feel are right, as well as inspiring me not to go into a situation that is not good for me. This album shows that Shooting Star should have gotten more recognition as an important link between Head East, Bob Seger, Loverboy, and the Outlaws.

4 out of 5 stars Leaping for the Stars!.......2002-09-26

I bought Shooting Star's previous CD "It's not over" in a cut out bin several years ago and was totally blown away by the emotion in Keith Mitchell's voice. These guys are great and deserve to be re-recognized. This album is a re-issue with the new song Let's Roll inspired by the 9/11 tragedy and the now infamous last words of Tom Beamer who was a passenger on the plane that went down in Penn. Shooting Star is giving a dollar from every CD they sell to his foundation. If you like great hard Rock in the style of foreigner, survivor, Bon-Jovi then you'll love this album and several of their older releases. "Call it Love", and "Leap of Faith" are just fantastic pieces of song writing filled with emotion and delivered with nothing but talent and desire. Buy this album now.

3 out of 5 stars Shooting Star's poofy hair phase.......2004-03-09

This cd starts off strong with Summer Sun, Somewhere In Your Heart and Heat Of The Night, but soon lapses into tired sounding filler. Summer Sun was one of the great "shouldabeen" songs of the summer of 1985, but despite occasional airplay, it never really caught on. Too bad. Maybe with a hit Gary West would have chosen to stay with the band. Now all we have is Shooting Star part II, a pale and poor substitute. This one is worth it if you find it cheap because the first three songs make a great addition to a career retrospective, plus there is the addition of the previously unreleased songs from the "Up The Creek" soundtrack. Get Ready Boy isn't great, but it was a pretty decent soundtrack song.
(Oh yeah, and for a laugh, check out the band picture on the back cover. Can any of you honestly say that this was a good look?)

5 out of 5 stars Another Great Shooting Star Album.......2003-12-22

SILENT SCREAM is another great album by Shooting Star. The songs are great, and Gary West's voice and Van MacClain's guitar really shine. There are many inspirational songs here, including "I'm Getting Out", "Get Ready Boy", and "Take It", the latter two of which are bonus cuts which truly improve the album. However, the most heart-tugging piece here is "Little By Little", which sums up why I gave up going to my old school's Thanksgiving Dinner in favor of getting in shape for my favorite female celebrities. Overall, this band's Midwestern roots still shine through here, making this band an AOR Outlaws to Survivor's Atlanta Rhythm Section. Whoever described this album as representing "the band's poofy-hair phase" needs some serious anger-management therapy, because first of all, the band did not poof their hair for this album cover, and secondly, the music is just as good as on the first two albums and is much better than its immediate predecessor, BURNING. It's unfortunate that Gary West decided to leave after this one, but at least we have this to enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars One Awesome Band.......2003-04-08

They have to be the greatest band that never had a top 40 hit. How that is possible I don't know. They are one of my all time favorite bands ever. This is their best album but all of the albums are awesome. I listen to this one all the time. Summer Sun , Heat Of The Night , Somewhere In Your Heart and When You're Young are all awesome songs. I have all their albums and also have found them on cds. There's not a bad song on it.

5 out of 5 stars The Most Underrated Album By the Most Underrated Band.......2003-02-07

As many have said, Shooting Star was a band that never came close to getting the recognition they deserved. Completing the travesty is the fact that, after some low-level radio hits, they released this, their apex, and it received no airplay at all outside their native midwestern enclave.

So what sets Shooting Star apart from the slew of 80s arena rock/AOR groups. The answer that comes to most minds is the violin. True, Shooting Star makes the most effective use of a classical instrument in a rock band this side of Kansas, but the answer is much more than that. There is a very pure, middle American authenticity in their music; a purity of purpose that the formulaic appeal to the mindless masses of Survivor or the saccharine sickliness of Journey could never even approach. Finally, while no single musician stands out as a dominant virtuoso, the whole is definitely greater than the sum of its parts.

The opener, "Summer Sun" is a well-crafted tune that serves as a preparation for the real genius that is to follow. "Somewhere in Your Heart" turns it up a notch both in scope and intensity. "Heat of the Night" leads you even further down this path and then they give it to you full on with both barrels with and epic anthem of American youth, the unparalleled "When You're Young." I defy you to listen to that one without turning it up way loud and recalling your teens/early twenties, especially if you hit that stage in the eighties.

Then there's a little relief with the ballad "In Her Eyes," but not much because, while the pace slows, the intensity remains high. Then we get the angst ridden "I'm Getting Out" which speaks universally our human frustrations. A beautifully plaintive song follows with "Don't Walk Away." Back between the eyes with "Time," alternately semi-soft with "Little by Little," and the final cut from the original album, "Don't Stop Me Now," which will have you so fired up, you'll be ready to conquer the world.
The CD throws in a ocuple bonus tracks, which are weak by comparison, but if they were on a Survivor or REO Speedwagon album, they would rule it. Thanks for throwing them in.
True, this is not their last album, but it is the last album with lead vocalist Gary West, whose voice and emotional range was the perfect match for this group. Later efforts had lost the magic.
In short, this album is the pinnacle of AOR; more than just rock and roll, it's meaningful and speaks to us in a way other AOR groups rarely even attempted and certainly never succeeded. GET IT and you will have a new lease on your youth as well as one more injustice to rail against--that these guys never got their due.

5 out of 5 stars This was not their final album.......2001-12-23

O.K. I love everything shooting star ever did...they were fantastic and never received their proper credit in the industrie. This cd may have been their best...but NOT THE LAST!....EVERYONE IS FORGETTING THE 1991 V&R release "It's Not Over" and I know it does exist because I have a copy sitting right beside me while i'm typing this.
