2 out of 5 stars A VERY Mixed Bag.......2007-01-13

As a story, "The History Boys" makes for a pretty good play, and an artistically successful movie. Unfortunately, I'm reviewing the soundtrack, and that's another story entirely. The movie/play storyline takes place in the early `80s, so naturally, the lion's share of the soundtrack is extracted from that era. The band representations are good and at times, even surprising; you'd expect to see New Order, the Pretenders, Echo & the Bunnymen and the Clash in a mid-eighties period piece, but adding Aztec Camera ("Walk Out to Winter") and Pigbag ("Papa's Got a Brand New Pigbag") are an inspired touch. While the band selections are spot-on, the tracks leave a bit to be desired; the Clash are represented here by the lame `dub' version of "Rock the Casbah", entitled "Mustapha Dance," and the Pretenders track is their Christmas tune, "2000 Miles." Worse, these recordings are interspersed with tired reproductions of Tin Pan Alley tunes, such as "Bewitched" (which appears twice) and "Bye Bye Blackbird." The result is, at best, uneven and inconsistent. If you love the movie, you'll enjoy the soundtrack. Otherwise, simply rent the DVD. C+ TOM RYAN

5 out of 5 stars See This Film & Buy This Soundtrack.......2007-01-03

Seeing this film was a real delight. It's not often in our superficial society that we get to see men have authentic conversations about sexual desires.
The music; I can't say enough about the music as it thrust me right back to my college days as a DJ with The Smiths, The Clash, Echo & The Bunnymen; it is awesome music appropos for the time and this story.
What a journey!

5 out of 5 stars JoJo in the Mitten.......2006-12-31

My first review after MANY purchases, but this CD inspired me to write. I saw the movie tonight and loved it! Came home to see if there was a soundtrack available and finding it so, purchased it immediately. I haven't listened to the whole thing through, but the samples provided enough to leave me wanting more....again and again. I am also delighted to see original songs included, as performed by the actors. That smilin' amazon box can't get here soon enough. An absolutely delicious movie and soundtrack. Well done and Cheers!

HIStory's 2 CDs (one hits, the other new) were Jackson's attempt to connect his glorious past to a dodgy present and--given it's commercial and artistic performance--cast a shadow on his future. Conceived as his formal coronation as the "King of Pop," HIStory's second disc instead presents Jackson as an epauletted, single-gloved Richard III. By turns paranoid, angry, bitter, sentimental, and, in one instance, possibly anti-Semitic, HIStory was less a collection of songs than a case history. A few tracks--mostly those produced by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis--are sleek, modern pop/soul, but too much of HIStory has the overblown vacuousness of a musician who knows his time is past, but is unsure as to how to react to the situation. --Steven Mirkin

If you're into M.K's latest and greates tunes, you will love this CD!! I listen to it a lot more then most of my cd that are collecting dust.

4 out of 5 stars Not bad but...........2007-02-20

How many times people have to pay for Michael Jackson greatest hits album? Come on this should have been a single disc album. I already bought all of his old albums! Anyway I review the new songs there.
I liked They Don't Care About Us, Stranger In Moscow, Earth Song, You Are Not Alone, Come Together, and Little Susie. They are all excellent tracks and I enjoyed them greatly. Scream, This Time Around, History, 2 Bad, and Smile are all average songs acceptable as filler
D.S., Money, Childhood , and Tabloid Junkie are very much junk.
Please Michael we all know you need privacy and tabloids are not treating you right and you had a "bad" childhood. I am sick and tired of hearing these type of songs over and over which are similar to old ones. So please stop nagging and make unique music

5 out of 5 stars Definitely Makes History.......2007-01-16

The title of the album is very appropriate. With the first CD giving us a blast from the past of amazing songs, and the second disk pulling us into the future. Many people have complained about the second disk, but I find that the songs on it are quite brilliant. The first song, Scream, is one of the most original songs of the nineties. It has a sound you won't find anywhere else, and the brother/sister duo mix their vocals extremely well. The second track, They Dont Really Care About Us, is so passionate and stimulating. You almost can't help turning up the volume. Stranger in Moscow is one of the most beautiful songs MJ's written, and its production is top notch. Earth Song is THE most beautiful song he's done, and it has a feel that gives you goosebumps. Overall, the album is one of the best I've heard. Some people critisize it for being too angry, but the anger gives the songs a passion and a depth that other artists lack. Its definitely worth the money for this deep and interesting work of art.

5 out of 5 stars HIStory Is Great.......2006-12-27

The media has attacked this album since day one! Why? Well, the reason is that this album is viciously attacking the media! After they tried to destroy Mr. Jackson with the FAL$E 1993 Allegations. This is Michael's most heart-felt album & definitely one of my favorites. The album still sold 18 Million Copies (36 Million Disks) worldwide.

This album mixes anger for injustice, racial equality, saving the planet and love. It is a truly wonderful album & Mike expands his musical abilities by producing the whole album and playing most of the instruments on the album.

5 out of 5 stars Instruments of the Orchestra - Great Reference Material!.......2007-04-04

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

5 out of 5 stars Beginner or Expert.......2007-03-12

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

5 out of 5 stars Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

3 out of 5 stars Frank's view.......2006-08-19

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

5 out of 5 stars Pure magic!.......2007-05-11

There are several Michael Jackson compilations out there from Sony, but this is the one you need to have. 15 of the greatest tracks Michael has written and/or recorded here at your disposal. It truly is the perfect retrospective of Michael's four main Sony albums. Sure, there are important tracks missing, such as "Say Say Say," "Off The Wall," and "Dirty Diana," but the drive and power of the ones that are there more than make up for any omissions. I'd recommend this album to anyone who is just starting to like Michael's music; it's the perfect way to "get your feet wet" in the massive ocean that is his music catalogue.

5 out of 5 stars Michael Jackson Rocks!.......2006-12-26

This is Jumaane, not Monet. Anyway, this album was so great that I lost it and I'm bout to buy it again. I like EVERY song except one (black or white) Every other song is my favorite. Don't let Michael's reputation overshadow his music! This is one amazing singer. Who else can sell 51 million copies to date on one album! Most people don't sell that many in a career. Even though I'm only 14, I'm tired of cheap music too. I'm an old head! Buy this album along with Teena Marie and you'll have all the music you'll need!

Teena Marie and Michael Jackson rock!

5 out of 5 stars Micheal Jackson.......2006-07-17

My son who just turned 4 is a huge fan and he loves everything about Micheal Jacksons music

5 out of 5 stars This is the One!.......2006-03-29

This CD has some of Michael Jackson's biggest and best hits such as Billie Jean, Bad, Thriller, and his most popular Beat It. As unusual as when I usually get CDs, almost all of the songs on this CD are my favorite. Mostly when you get a CD, you only have 1 or 2 favorites and a lot of songs your stuck with that you don't want. This album is not like that. But the only ones I don't like or care for are She's Out Of My Life, I Just Can't Stop Loving You, Man In The Mirror, The Girl Is Mine, Wanna Be Startin' Somethin', and Heal The World. I heard about Michael Jackson a long time ago then in 2002, I listened to one of the song samples here on Amazon which was Billie Jean. I liked it, so I got this CD and liked most of the songs on this Album. It's too bad he got arrested and I think he's innocent. I know a few guys that don't like Michael Jackson but I don't know how they cannot like him. Michael Jackson is one of the greatest Pop singers of all time and he will always be. I love you Michael!

5 out of 5 stars Stunning album that was seriously underrated. .......2007-05-24

A cracking album that shot straight to No 1 in the UK and bursts with Michael's anger and vitriol. His voice is just amazing. Check out Ghosts/Is it Scary, This Time Around and the remixed Scream and see what I mean. Powerful stuff that's also incredibly energising. While I was formerly not a big fan of dance music the reworked tracks are treated in such a brilliant way that I am coverted.Pulsating. Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Cream always flows to the top !.......2006-08-12

The greatest individual star of all times, if not at last of the last 3 decades, and a other and an other 3 to come, he is just as big as the Beatles if not bigger as he has to do it on his own.
I, along with the court of justice do believe Micheal does not have a bad bone in his body, the fact that he needs kids around him is perfectly natural, because kids are sincere, this is wat he Michael and eveyone else needs to stay in touch with reality.

Thanks Michael for all the happy memories your music has brought us and hopefully will for a long time to come.

Who's Bad ?
Not Michael !

2 out of 5 stars Michael Jackson's Dance on The Blooded Floor: 2 stars.......2006-07-18

As Michael Jackson ventured on the second leg of the HIStory World Tour in 1997, the EP Blood On The Dancefloor was released perhaps in order to capitalize on Jackson's success in Europe. His HIStory album had experienced enormous success in Europe, yet America did not embrace the album as warmly as Europe had. Jackson's popularity in Europe was cemented as the first single Blood On The Dancefloor reached no. 1 on the English single chart, while the album enjoyed success in both England and the rest of Europe.

Blood On The Dancefloor is mainly to be regarded as an EP or a remix album, consisting of 5 ordinary songs and 8 remixes. The title track and the first single Blood On The Dancefloor is a funky up-tempo song with a fusion of keyboard and teasing synthesizers. Despite being released as the opening single, the song was hardly among Jackson's finest material. In fact, Blood On The Dancefloor even sounded dated in 1997 and it has certainly not aged very well. I always found that the song bore a resemblance to the Dangerous album in terms of sound. Perhaps the material on the Blood on the Dancefloor album was written for that particular album or during the same time period. However, the gruelling theme continues as the song Morphine reveals a character completely obsessed with the drug. The soft and hunting verses are a contrast to the sturdier choruses, yet surprisingly it works quite well. Superfly Sister is Michael Jackson's attempt to simulate Prince; however the repetitive, dull baseline is an unwelcome addition. Similar to the lead single, Superfly Sister suffers from the syndrome of ¨dated-ness¨. Ghosts and Is It Scary are enjoyable songs; however they are not among Jackson's greatest works. Notably, Is It Scary is a lovely track especially due to the shift between the soft verses and the tougher choruses. I considered it the best song among the 5 ordinary songs on the album. The remaining 8 songs/remixes are a Tour De Force of dance remixes. Generally, I do not like remixes, however the remix of 2 Bad, Scream-Louder and HIStory are not half-bad. Yet the remixes of the remaining songs leave a lot to be desired.

Blood On The Dancefloor is primarily an indulgence for hardcore Michael Jackson fans. The few ordinary songs are pleasant, however they are not on par with Michael Jackson's back-catalogue. If you like remixes in generally, I am positive the remixes on the album would surely appeal to you. If you have recently discovered Michael Jackson's music, I would advise you to purchase Number Ones or The Essential Michael Jackson in order to fully grasp the back-catalogue of Jackson.

Overall Grade: 4.0/10

4 out of 5 stars great!! .......2005-12-12

Blood on the dance floor is mainly a remix album of Michael Jackson's HIStory songs.
Well, the thing is that I don't like remixes but there is one that's definitely good. That's the remix of track 'HIStory'.
Now on to the new stuff. MJ really did well by choosing 5 new tracks because it convinced me that his every song is different and innovative.
BOTDF, as fans often call it, has the
title track on it: this is an echo-filled, strong, blood-red composition of dance with a bit of techno, soul and rock. This is unique if you believe me.
I enjoyed it through a whole summer when I watched
the video for it every day!
MJ proves that he is a good and.. an even better dancer. A real surprise. Even a friend of mine who is far from being an MJ-fan, told me that he finds MJ a better dancer than he'd done before.

SUPERFLY SISTER is a rap-like but still strangely soulful track with a catchy beat and a great 'east coast' feeling I like very much. It's got a message, listen up!

GHOSTS is a great r&b song that is solid, consistent and you can easily get hooked on the melody. The video is awesome, too. I bet!

IS IT SCARY: brother of the previous one. Jackson's best vocal achievement since 1995's 'Smile' and before 2001's 'Unbreakable'. An r&b-based song that grows to a pop hymn - without a hymnical feature.

MORPHINE: This is I think MJ's most unique song ever, quite the 'Musicology' for him. This is fully composed & ordered by him, he even plays the instruments.
The song mixes an acid and steely beat with innovative vocal elements of metal and even a Jackson-style rap. So a closed composition emerges.
I hated Morphine first. But now I see it as a kind of masterpiece.

OK. Don't buy it. It's mess.

3 out of 5 stars Great Album.......2007-06-05

Of Natural History was my first Sleepytime Gorilla Museum album, and which got me hooked on their music along with their beautiful family tree (Faun Fables, Tin Hat, Idiot Flesh, etc.). Only good albums can get me really stuck into a specific band for a long while. This is one of those albums. But there are some complaints... the monologues can get a bit monotonous, as well as some of the ambience, mainly the end of Babydoctor, which lasts over 3 minutes. 17 Year Cicadas is really the only track I could take out and I wouldn't really notice much a difference at all, it just doesn't provide anything to the album. One more thing that bothers me about this release is the flow, the first 6 tracks go in and out beautifully, but after that, it's a bit jagged, as the second half really isn't as important as the first in terms of quality and diversity. And Cockroach feels akward where it stands, right after the immense Babydoctor, which I think (Babydoctor) would've been an absolutely perfect album closer.

I love this album, most of the songs are great alone, but the album doesn't quite stand on its own the whole time through. My favorite tracks include TDHAOHOTD, Phthisis, Apocalypse, FC, and Babydoctor.

3.5/5

5 out of 5 stars Nothing short of devastating..........2006-10-03

I've listened to a lot of extreme metal bands. I can recall listening to my first Cannibal Corpse album, and thinking, "Wow, that's intense."

Then I moved up to Meshuggah, which was quite a leap. I thought, "Wow, this is intense."

And then I have come to this. This might already be some sort of cliche, but if you can picture the way the apocalypse might sound, you're still not hitting this album. Seriously, I listened to "Freedom Club", went along with the soft part with the vibe-like instruments playing, and then the math professor dream, and WHAM!!!

I'm surprised I came out alive. Mind you, these were large speakers, and I didn't expect anything that infernal to come out. Think Meshuggah with more instruments, a more demanding singer, and an overall greater burden for a listener to bear. I was in shock for about ten minutes. Well, not really, but this song in particular just made me flip.

Even before that magnum opus, there's the opening song, which has to be some sort of tongue-in-cheek stab at evangelical music, or something. I was confused, but then the lyrics to the female-male sung part clued me in. "The greatest lie ever told" and a song about "the infant God" usually don't go together. But, surely enough, they do here. Great background harmonies, by the way.

"Phthisis" is another thing completely. The female vocals are absolutely amazing, in that they convey tons of emotion. One of the things I noticed about this album is that the lyrics are genius, something that doesn't stop on any one song. But the vocals on this song always make shivers go up my spine. They're not scary, they're just aurally arresting.

Oh, and don't let me forget "Babydoctor", which could be even more intense than "Freedom Club" plus all the other songs. If one song could define a band's career, it would be this one. Agonizingly brutal vocals, without all the cookie-monster/Dani Filth scream [...]. The guy sounds like he needs therapy. But, given the album's message, the assault might be necessary to implant an idea into one's head. Just a theory.

So, all ends with the twisted kid song parody "Cockroach", and then there's a hidden track that is basically just ambience. But you've made it through the abyss. The word harsh takes on a whole new meaning on this album.

Don't expect other types of intensity. There's no black metal, no gore metal, no stereotypical death metal, no stereotypical thrash. It's completely in its own little world. For instance, most percussion on this album was hand made from things like kitchen utensils and trash cans and other common "non-instruments". Who else does that? I can't think of any other metal band that uses homemade percussion.

It's not death metal. It's not really anything that's been documented previously. If it's not your favorite, you're eventually going to admit it was at least a memorable experience. Trust me, if you dig Bungle or Thinking Plague, you'll go apes**t after hearing this.

AWESOMELY AWESOME TOTALLY RECOMMENDED FOR FANS OF: Meshuggah, Mr. Bungle (or other non-FNM Patton metal projects), Thinking Plague, Rock-In-Opposition, Frank Zappa (although that's almost a stretch, almost)

1 out of 5 stars loose sphinctered & over ambitious.......2006-06-19

OK so the production values & musicianship are great - but this is like if Trey Parker wrote a rock opera without any jokes in it and decided to get the fat shouty one from Penn&Teller to be the lead singer & put him way too far up in the mix. This band love the shroud of mystery invoked by acts such as the sun city girls, secret chiefs 3, and caroliner - and so they write & sing really clumsy "satirical" lyrics where big business, capitalism etc is represented by a mythical demon / beasty and have some other painful conceits to boot. oh dear. save your pennies.

5 out of 5 stars what of natural history sounds like to me........2006-04-25

its almost like satan just f**ked an elephant riding a clown in a carnival while playing ping pong with a midget who is also the bearded woman and balding while lighting a pilot light in the oven in which the gas has been leaking all day while a leer jet passes 10 ft over the roof of that house.

In other words... pretty freaking wierd. good stuff. The musicianship of this band is amazing. The cd is very hard to listen to and definitly takes more than one listen to even come close to appreciating it. I do suggest listening to it if nothing else to expand your mind, and like another reviewer said you definitly have to have an IQ in the mid to upper 3 digit range.

5 out of 5 stars Of natural brilliance.......2006-03-05

Much like Naked City and the Boredoms before them, Sleepytime Gorilla Museum have staked out a comfortable niche as demonic stepchildren of the avant-garde genre, but one should definitely never infer that the word comfortable could be used in connection with their music. In contrast, Of Natural History is one challenging and distinctive album, sounding sort of like the mutant offspring of Mr. Bungle, Korn, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Meshuggah, and Nickelback (okay, I made that last one up). Vicious metal, highlighted by doomy guitar noise and jagged, contrapuntal rhythms, mixes with heavy symphonic elements and some out-of-left-field weirdness in a seemingly random and haphazard way, but that doesn't mean there isn't some method to SGM's madness, as the songs on this album are some of the most bizarrely fascinating of the decade thus far. Vocally, as well, Of Natural History is all over the map, incorporating fearsome howls, Jonathan Davis-style scat, haunting, ethereal female vocals, and some almost comically dark bass crooning and spoken word into its unpredictable pastiche of styles. Since the songs are so schizophrenic and wide-ranging, hopping from one sound to another without warning and often ending in a completely different form than that in which they started, it's sort of tough to describe them in much depth, but the album is probably best summed up by its twin 10-minute plus epics, FC: The Freedom Club and Baby Doctor. The former is a fierce, chugging monster whose warped metallic riffage and feral vox are underlain by dizzying string arrangements and clanging percussion for an effect that nicely conjures up the feeling of going insane; the latter steadily builds from a mournful, eerily minimal orchestral rock tune to something that sounds sort of like how early-70's Can might have sounded had they been fronted by Beelzebub himself. There are tons of other great songs here--the overbearingly heavy and evil The Donkey-Headed Adversary Of Humanity Opens The Discussion, the pile-driving Phthisis, and the hilarious tell-off Cockroach among them--but really, everything on this album is worth a listen. So if you're as bored by the current mainstream music scene as I am (and if your IQ is in the triple digits, you should be) Of Natural History should serve to jar you out of your doldrums for a few hours.

4 out of 5 stars Take what you want!.......2005-05-23

The Justified Ancients of Mu Mu (The Jams) formed in 1987. The tracks on this CD are taken from their various early singles and LPs. The group also recorded as The Timelords, KLF and 2K. The Jams were a sample crazed production team that took sampling to the extreme. They made a lot of really interesting music sampling anything they felt like sampling. Consequently, they got sued a lot. Anyway, this is a really fun CD that features some of their work that they got permission to release, including their first real hit "Doctorin' the Tardis". If you like that song, you'll probably like the rest of the CD. It even incudes a Christmas song, "Downtown", and a New Years song, "Burn the Beat".

5 out of 5 stars The Timelords really Doctor the TARDIS and samples.......2003-12-22

Taking sampling to its logical conclusions was revolutionary in the 80's. Tone-Loc himself sampled McCartney's "Band On The Run", and Van Halen's "Jamie's Crying". 2 Live Crew used Van Halen's "Ain't Talkin' About Love" on As Nasty As They Wanna Be, and who knows how much Zeppelin was used on the Beastie Boys.

Then there are the Jams (Justified Ancients of Mu Mu), one of the aliases used by the Kopyright Liberation Front (read KLF), a duo of Scottish rap-pillage artists with strong brogues who made it to #1 in the UK with "Doctorin' The TARDIS", a song familiar to Dr. Who fans. Their basic sound consists of loud rapping, scratching, loud guitar chords, and ripe drum machine synths

A loud irreverent vocalization of the first notes from the La Marseillaise comes, followed by a brief "love, love, love" from the Beatles' "All You Need Is Love." And then... "KICK OUT THE JAMS, M---------ERS!" And later on, do I hear Samantha Fox's "touch me, touch me" from her best known single? Yes, I do. A collage of fierce AC-DC guitar chords, human beat box-type sounds, scratching, samples follow the rest of the raucous opening track, "All You Need Is Love."

"Don't Take Five (Take What You Want)" is advice given to the rappers by a man with antler ears and is basically a story about how the rappers make it rich. TV commercials or programems are sampled, but the main musical sample is "Take Five" by Dave Brubeck, done briefly.

"Mission Impossible, we were told. She'll never join the Jams." The "she" in question is Whitney Houston, and the loud brass climactic chords from the Theme from Shaft, along with Hayes' "can you dig it" and "right on" being heard. Then, the telltale percussion from "I Wanna Dance With Somebody" is heard, and then that opening whoop from Whitney, to which the Jams cheer. "Oh! Whitney Houston joined the Jams!" to which Isaac Hayes says "right on, right on!" More Whitney and Hayes are heard later on. This is crazy! I was surprised Houston didn't sue them the same way ABBA did.

"Porpoise Song" is not the song by the Monkees from Head, but a drum machine/rap and scratch that samples airy synths from Pet Shop Boys and takes the rhythm from Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean." I really miss that scratching from the 80's. Look at rap now!

"Candyman" is a song centered around Jimi Hendrix's "Foxy Lady." Later on, a brief sample from Richard Wagner's "Die Valkure," the track featured in Apocalypse Now, is played, over weird special effects.

"Burn The Beat" is a party jamming in full swing. "can't stand the party" a la Sly and the Family's "Dance To The Music" can be heard. After a sampling of Michael Jackson's "Bad", the song jars to a halt to the traditional New Year's Eve countdown on BBC1, leading to Big Ben's chimes ushering in the New Year.

And then... "Doctor who, hey doctor who, doctor who, hey, the TARDIS..." sung a la the chorus of Gary Glitter's "Rock And Roll Pt. 2" and then the wheezing and grinding sound of the TARDIS, a Dalek's "exterminate!" A wailing siren predominates in parts of the song. The Who theme used is the new one used in 1980, and thudding drums. The line "we obey no one, we are the supreme beings" are taken from Episode 6 of Genesis Of The Daleks. This was used in the inbetween segments of The Making of Silver Nemesis.

"Gary In The TARDIS" is like the previous number, except with Gary Glitter vocals, where chants for Gary, and Gary asking, "Did you miss me? Do you love me? Do you want to touch me?" References to being the leader of the gang is mixed in with mention of the TARDIS. The Dalek still says his lines from Genesis.

The liner notes also contain a timeline of the Jams, including their ruthless sampling of many artists until ABBA sued them for using "Dancing Queen" sans permission. Result, they had to destroy all copies of their first album and reissue it with all the samples taken off, leaving wide gaps between raps(!!)

This was one of the few CDs I bought in 1990, and I listened to it over and over as a result. One of my favourite CDs.

2 out of 5 stars KLF? I don't hear no KLF in here...........2003-07-16

In a (big) word: DISAPPOINTED.

I have WHITE ROOM & CHILL OUT, and love 'm. Went looking for more of the same & found this disk here on Amazon. Aside from a couple of entertaining tracks/ideas, there's nothing here to satisfy my urge for more KLF.

Which leads me to another big word: FRUSTRATED.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Cd!.......2001-12-14

I originally bought this album for the "Doctorin'The Tardis", track, and ended up falling for every other song on here as well. This is one of my favorite albums and I definitely recommend it to anyone.

5 out of 5 stars What the **** is going on?.......1999-05-01

I have been a JAMMS fan for a long time. When I bought this cd, I was hooked. The first song "All you need is love" is the best song on this cd. Along with "Burn the beat" and Doctorin' the Tardis." The is a great compilation of the JAMMS. Inside the case, it gives a list of all the JAMMS releases. If you are a fan of The KLF. Then get this cd. This is where The KLF came to be. I will never sell this cd to anyone. The KLF will always live on.

4 out of 5 stars Nice Collection.......2007-03-05

5 out of 5 stars PERFECT!.......2006-10-26

There is only a word with which I can describe this set of discs: perfect!
The only flaw there is, is not related to the singing or playing: no text enclosed.

5 out of 5 stars Great singing and excellent value for money.......2004-09-19

This is probably one of the best anthologies of Purcell songs around, and not just because it's two-for-one pricing means it contains twice as much music (CD1:74'24" & CD2: 77'41")! Nancy Argenta has an irrepressible sense of style and crystal clear diction. But unlike Emma Kirby, whose vocal purity can become tiresome, these renditions radiate warmth. She is also, I have found, more consistently involving than any one of the singers in Hyperion's three disc survey of Complete Secular Songs (recently reissued as a single set). One marvels at how she judiciously balances restraint and emotional forthrightness. The accompaniments (archlute, viola da gamba, harpsichord, and organ) are well judged and blend with the voice, all helped by an excellently defined recording acoustic. This is an absolute winner at any price!

5 out of 5 stars More than two hours of beautiful 17th century 'ayres'.......2001-08-02

Two CDs, totaling more than 150 minutes of sparsely-arranged (never more than 3-5 instruments at a time), sweetly-sung, 350 year old 'ayres' (a typically English form of secular music). Nancy Argenta's soprano voice is lovely, silvery indeed as her name implies. The instruments are a discreet but friendly accompaniment to her solo voice. Perhaps the instruments are a little too discreet -- there are times when I wish they were a touch more prominent. But that is a very, very minor complaint. A beautiful collection, and quite well worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars From Music To Cover.......2005-05-07

I think this is definately one of Flukes finer moments. Every track glistens with pure uniqueness. That and the fact that the brilliant artwork by David Bethell "Just Your Average Second On This Planet" reminds me so much of another of my favourite albums, namely The Human Leagues' "Reproduction" (which really is electronic music at it's finest) can't be a bad thing.

5 out of 5 stars Best Cuts for EDM Fans.......2005-04-23

I'm going to have to disagree with the previous reviewer on this one. Progressive History X is very different from the British import Progressive History XXX (I should know... I have both). There is only one song that is on both compilations. The rest are either completely different tracks taken from the different albums or very different sounding remixes. As a matter of fact if you get both (like I did... didn't originally intend to... long story) you can almost get complete coverage of the best of what Fluke has to offer.

Think of it this way. Progressive History XXX is for the hard core Fluke collector who wants to hear the early works that never made it to CD, the artful album cuts and the rare remixes. Progressive History X is for the fan who first listened to Atom Bomb or some other song from the Risotto album on some dance floor and wants more of those infectious beats.

Basically X has tracks and remixes that run the gamut of Fluke's more popular dance tracks. Most of the music comes from the three albums Six Wheels on my Wagon, Oto and Risotto. But don't get discouraged if you already have any of these albums. PH X is still worth a look. Why you may ask? Because almost all of the songs are either extended cuts of the original music or remixes. Granted extended cut can mean just ten more seconds, but believe me it's nice to hear.

These are dance tracks. No doubt about it. If you ever wondered about what people have been talking about with Fluke having that "Underworld sound" this CD will let you in on it. Driving beats with interesting spurts of ambience and grooves woven all around. Some comments on some tracks:

THUMPER - This is the song you will find on both PH X and XXX. Identical on both. Not bad for a first cut in the late 80's. Fluke definitely had a more pop sound at this time.

PHILLY - Very different mix than XXX. This is the song that put Fluke on the map in England. It snappy and it's easy to see it be a club hit back in the day, but its age is definitely beginning to show.

ELECTRIC GUITAR and GROOVY FEELING - Some of the best songs from Six Wheels on my Wagon. Very addictive dance grooves on these. These cuts are the ones that are slightly longer than their album counterparts and mixed slightly different. In my opinion they are marginally better than the originals.

BUBBLE, BULLET and TOSH - Definitely remixes. Definitely Underworld style remixes. Definitely fun to dance or groove to. Can't say they are better than the originals (actually the Tosh remix IS better in my opinion), but I can say they I really like them.

ATOM BOMB (Atomix 1)- This is supposed to be a remix, but it sounds more like a remaster of the original cut. For all of you Risotto owners out there this is the one song on this compilation that won't give you much of anything different.

ABSURD (Whitewash) - The coolest remix you will find of this song. The album is almost worth buying for this one alone.

If you are completely new to Fluke and want more there are two albums you must have. Risotto and Progressive History X. This will get you maximum bang for your EDM buck with practically zero repeat tracks. Those of you who own Progressive History XXX and don't have Otto or Six Wheels on my Wagon I recommend getting X to fill out your collection as well.

3 out of 5 stars Skip this, get the box set.......2002-10-25

Let me just say this first: I love Fluke. However, I have a problem with Fluke's U.S. representaion on Astralwerks. This comp of their work is so unbelievably shallow, Astralwerks should be ashamed at having it in their catalogue. This disc is actually a cut-down compilation from a 3 cd compilation called "Progressive History XXX" that was released in Great Britain. You can probably guess which one is worth buying. The box set has a total of 32 songs on it, ranging from early "Blighty" and "Peel Sessions" works, to some tunes from "6 Wheels", "Oto", and "Risotto". The real gem on the 3 disc set is the disc of remixes...most have been unavailable for years. To be honest, I only gave this disc 3 stars because it has Fluke's name on it...seek out the import, and you will be rewarded.

4 out of 5 stars An index of metals.......2001-10-16

While many of the trio's contemporaries, for example, Underworld, Chemical Brothers and 808 State, have crossed over into commercial territory, with records in the pop charts all around the world and interviews in the press, Fluke remain very much a mystery. Maybe they shouldn't have hidden themselves behind their brilliantly designed cover artworks, maybe their singles suffered from bad promotion, distribution and missing radio airplay - two things are for sure: Fluke have released a string of great dance tracks throughout the '90s, and their 1997 outing "Risotto" is regarded as one of the best electronica albums of the decade. And now, just when I expected to hear some new material from the band, their label decides to release "Progressive history X", a compilation of singles, album tracks, alternative versions and remixes. It's obviously a collection for the newly interested more than anyone else - if you want to have a convenient introduction to the band, then this disc is the best place to go. It opens with the previously unavailable "Thumper!", a fairly laid-back and pop-oriented piece with funky, almost Caribbean-type rhythms and childish vocal samples. Nice, but not exactly indispensable. One of the most interesting pieces of this compilation and still Fluke's most progressive track is the 7-minute arena-rock/acid house masterpiece "Philly", originally released in 1990. Now look, where would Underworld be without Fluke's influence? Still playing ponderous pseudo-blues rock like "Change the weather" or "Underneath the radar"? By the time Fluke released their second proper album, "Six wheels..", however, the trio's approach had shifted away from their early cross-over sound to a straighter and more simple approach - clean and clinical and perfect for the dancefloor, as "Slid", "Electric guitar" and "Groovy feeling" prove. With their third album, "Oto", Fluke thankfully began to branch out again and to adopt various other styles, ranging from dubby basslines to eerie ambient sounds, but most importantly, they added some memorable vocals and intriguing lyrics to their music. The three tracks from this era which are included here - "Bubble", "Bullet" and "Tosh" - were extensively remixed for their single/EP appearances and do not have much in common with the original album versions. "Bullet" comes up with much more powerful and rougher beats, but the real highlight and one of my all-time favorite dancefloor tunes is the remix of "Tosh", which is built on a fluid layer of incredibly forceful, arpeggiated sequencer riffs and equally driving techno beats. If you thought Underworld's "Cowgirl" was engaging enough, then this will blow you away. Finally, we have a selection of tracks and remixes from Fluke's most recent and overall most consistent album, "Risotto": "Atom bomb" introduces the quite hard-edged sound of the band's late-'90s output, not too dissimilar from the material released by other "big-beat" outfits at that time. While these latter-day cuts are quite suitable for single release as well, they really should be enjoyed as part of the album "Risotto", where one track seamlessly segues into the next and makes for a continuous and fascinating listening experience. Overall, it would have been nice if this disc would sport a few more tracks from Fluke's early days, simply because many of their early-'90s albums, singles and EPs have gone out of print. Given the fact that little information ever appears on the group, the booklet unfortunately doesn't provide any comments on what Fluke achieved in the eyes of each member, how the trio came together, or what the tracks/lyrics the band composed were about. Despite these flaws and the rather pedestrian packaging of the album, it really is essential for anyone with a genuine interest in UK dance music and, as such, comes highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Send new album please.......2001-08-27

This album features chronologically (thumper was flukes first big 12",wasn't technically published till 2001) music from every area of fluke's carrer. Going all the way back to pre-hype times with tracks from 90-91, all the way up to the "atomic bombing" of risotto. The tracks are all great and all of them hold up to the test of time, suprisingly. The older stuff sounds much more like "dubnobasswithmy..." era Underworld. You can hear some cheap keyboard sounds here and there, but compared to other early 90's techno, even the earlier stuff sounds more 94 than 91, proving that stayed ahead of the times. As for how well it sound sright now, If your an ("american") fan of fluke the latter tracks are probably a must have. They are all pretty much imports, and unless your diehard just not worth importing all those cd's. The middle tracks are pretty good if you, but a little dated, like I mentioned early underworld fans should enjoy them. All the track included are of the more "single" vocal style, not much in the way of the more chilled out instrumentals like on risotto. I reccomend this mostly to fans of Risotto who just want a little more fluke in thier collection. here is the full track mix Thumper (Original Mix) Philly (Jamorphous) Slid (Glid) Electric Guitar (Humbucker) Groovy Feeling (Make Mine a 99) Bubble (Speechbubble) UBullet (Bullion) Tosh (Gosh) Atom Bomb (Atomix 1) Absurd (Whitewash) Squirt (Rissotto Vox)
