Product Description

Children have a natural ability to learn multiple languages easily. Studies show that from birth to age 12, a child's brain is open to assimilate and retain other languages. With repeat exposure to another language, your child's mental develpment will be enriched and carry over into all aspects of learning. This entire CD has been sung only in Spanish to immerse the child fully in the language. This method has been proven to be the most effective way to teach secondary languages. Nursery rhyme songs are a perfect way to introduce or continue developing another language in a familiar setting. Children will recognize the tunes and be able to make a connection with what they are singing. The tempo of these songs has been slowed down slightly so that the words are easy for children to hear and articulate themselves, in order to sing along. Written lyrics have also been included. Childhood development is extremely important! Adding additional languages in a fun, musical environment will only increases a child's capacity for knowledge.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Distinct enunciation makes each word understandable.......2007-05-25

The absence of a lot of instruments makes the words on this CD very EASY TO UNDERSTAND. I already knew the English words to the songs ("Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star," "Old MacDonald Had a Farm," etc.) Because the singer pronounced each word very clearly, I quickly learned Spanish vocabulary while driving in my car.

4 out of 5 stars Entertaining & educational for the little ones..........2007-03-13

The simplicity of the accompaniment and the familiarity of the songs to the English speaker facilitates understanding of the Spanish lyrics. The artist has a nice voice and the words are individually enunciated making it easy to sing along. My children enjoy this CD and it is fun to see them picking up another language through music!!

3 out of 5 stars Very So-so.......2007-01-22

I really wanted and fully expected to love this CD. Unfortunately it sounds like it was recorded in someone's living room using a Casio for musical accompaniment. The woman has a nice singing voice and I appreciate that the songs have been slightly slowed to allow non-Spanish speakers more time to process the Spanish sounds, however overall I think of this as an amateur product.

5 out of 5 stars We love this CD!.......2006-12-23

We are English speaking parents of a 10 month old but we want our little one to learn Spanish. We play this CD for her all the time and we all love it. We also have the same songs in English and have played that one for her since birth, so all the sounds are familar to her. The songs are well sung and the tunes are all familar to any American English speaker. This is a great way to start introducing the little one to Spanish in a fun way!

5 out of 5 stars FORMIDABLE!.......2006-02-09

As a mother trying to teach my 3 year-old son Spanish, I enjoy this CD greatly, the songs are already familiar to the kids, and their learning capacity, even on a foreign language, is trully impressive, but most of all, my son loves it!

4 out of 5 stars Me Gusta Boca Beth!.......2007-05-18

I have 4 kids under 8 years old, and they all love this CD, especially my 3 year old. The songs are catchy and easy to learn, and use tunes that the kids already know. We've easily listened to it 100 times, and the kids are just as engaged as they were the first time, though now they can sing along. My 3 year old will wander around the house singing the songs over and over again, though sometimes that makes them get stuck in MY head. Clearly, they are having fun, and they've definitely started learning Spanish well beyond what Dora teaches them.

The only issue I had with the CD, which kept it from getting 5 stars, is that the production quality could be better, and because of this it was sometimes hard to distinguish between B sounds and P sounds. A lyrics sheet for the parents would help this. But the kids didn't care - they love it, so therefore I do, too.

5 out of 5 stars Boca Beth is the Best.......2004-10-01

We love Boca Beth!!! My daughter Samantha loves all the music. She loves to sing and what a gift to know she is learning while she is doing it. What a wonderful feeling to have your child come to you and tell you she knows when her birthday is and when you ask her When? She tells you in Spanish. Money can't buy that!!! Thank you Boca Beth

5 out of 5 stars Boca Beth makes learning fun.......2004-10-01

We love Boca Beth. My daughter just loves to sing and what a delight to know she is learning while she is doing it. We love the CD's and DVD's. How proud I was when she came to me to tell me that she knew when her birthday was. When i asked when? She told me in Spanish.... Thank you Boca Beth
We highly recommend this product for you and that young someone special in your life.

4 out of 5 stars Positives outweigh negatives.......2004-09-14

This CD has so much appeal to my 4 and 2 year olds that I've decided to keep it, however, I was a little shocked upon hearing grammatical and pronunciation mistakes. I'm no expert in Spanish but studied the language for 7 years. When I heard the pronunication of "azul" with a hard "z" like zebra I was a little surprised. Then "limpia" was pronounced with a soft "i" like "limp" in English. Things continued in this "Spanglish" fashion when I heard that "el perro diga woof." I'm pretty sure "el perro dice woof."
Thumbs up for the bouncy, happy tunes, but thumbs down for the nitpicky details.

5 out of 5 stars Boca is the best!.......2004-09-04

My toddler loves this CD. I just got back from a 2 hour car ride(from Disney to Tampa) and it entertained him the WHOLE way. Even though he is only 17 months he sounds out English and Spanish words TOGETHER!!
We are so excited about this program and I look forward to learning Spanish with my child (and our nanny is learning with us too!!)

5 out of 5 stars Singularly Hitting Their Mark.......2005-09-10

As emerging from a swanky beach house, The Boys hit their mark with this, the most smooth and consistently rich of their many, many albums. "Discoteca" and "Single" interrogate the viewpoint of a sophisticated pleasure traveler with Spanish rhythm, "Metamorphosis" encapsulates the growing up of an introverted man; from the self-referential "Electricity" to the proud stances of "Up Against It" and "To Step Aside," each song catches and holds memory. Pet Shop Boys consistently give us fine albums, and often, even finer remixes: Introspective, Behavior, Very, Release, and Disco 3 being some of my favorites.

3 out of 5 stars Pet Shop Boys beckon us to "c'mon and get happy".......2005-01-21

Following the critical and commercial success of 1993's "Very", the Pet Shop Boys set off to create a album Neil Tennnant described as "an international album." Inspired by latin and Caribbean percussion the boys heard while on their Discovery tour- the groundwork for "bilingual" was set. While previous PSb albums were very much set in the rainy-day atmosphere of the UK. this new album introduces us to a happier PSB- caught up in the joys of love.

The album itself is a rather imbalanced affair that even Neil and Chris admit is too long an album. The first half of the album follows the latin theme with its thundering drums courtesy of percussion troupe Sheboom. Tracks "discoteca" and "single" Neil sings snippets in Spanish asking "hay una discoteca por aqui?". After the sunny up-tempo "Se A vida E (thjats the way life is)" the Pets get stuck in their old euro groove and the latter half of the album is pedestrian PSB. The songs are still enjoyable though and most PSB fans will enjoy them. "The survivors" wouldn't be out of place on 1990's "Behaviour" with its shuffle rhythm and elegaic themes about AIDS and life while "Saturday Night forever" is PSB in classic disco mode.

Overall "Bilingual" is a good an album but may have left some of the PSB fan base disappointed arriving after the full-on dance pop explosion of "Very." Personally I enjoyed the album overall but do agree with other reviewers that "bilingual" was the first of their weaker albums. Coming from the Pet Shop Boys-its still a pretty solid release.

Best Moments: "Se A Vida E", "Red Letter Day", "Up against it" Weaker moments: "Before", "Electricity"

3 out of 5 stars Whatever happened to..........2004-02-14

"Saturday Night Forever"? This isn't one of my favorite PSB albums, but I surely enjoyed SNF. I wish they included it in their Nightlife Tour DVD and POP ART.

4 out of 5 stars No translation or subtitles required..........2003-09-28

Again the Pet Shop Boys played their little trick on their fans. The album Very was released in 1994, and didn't do very well commercially or critically, and while the Pet Shop Boys shortly thereafter toured, it had the feeling (partly due to the rumour mill) that this was in fact a farewell series of performances. The next year, when the dual-disc set Alternative was released, the question was largely, 'Alternative to what?' -- a real album, a continuation (Alternative was made up of all the non-album b-sides that had been released during the Pet Shop Boys career, once again fueling speculation that this was a tying-up-of-loose-ends at the end of a career).

Then, in 1996, the album Bilingual was released, again following the by-then-well-established pattern of releasing a single, then follow-up with the album. This was an 'out' album; while most people always knew the alternative sexuality of the group, it had never been made explicit in the group's official publicity. Now, it had been. No surprise to anyone really (does anything coming from any band from the 80's really surprise anyone?).

The Pet Shop Boys managed to release an adequate album, alas, not their best work, and indeed some commentators, remembering the speculation that they were ready to retire, opined that retirement would have been better than this.

Not so, to be sure -- this is a perfectly serviceable album, good in many respects; the first single, Before, was released with a CD-movie of the video (very useful for those without Euro-MTV, American MTV long since having left the genre of the Pet Shop Boys behind and thus unlikely to carry their videos even when they win Euro-MTV awards). This song included many of the classic Pet Shop Boys elements -- poppy dance tune, double-edged lyrics, sample heavy feel, and toe-tapping rhythm.

The rest of the album is influenced obviously by the groups adventures in Latin America and Latin Europe during their concert tour, as well as holidays in the sun. Songs such as Discoteca and Se a vida é contain in their titles the influence; peppered throughout with almost spoken lines in Spanish (¿Hay una discoteca por acqui?), almost as if they had simply lifted lines from their Berlitz travel phrase book. But, in the traditional quirky Pet Shop Boys way, these fit in nicely with the tune.

The transitions on this album are interesting -- for the first time, the Pet Shop Boys didn't have their songs as isolated bits, but many instead flowed together--Discoteca and Single being two prime examples, which bleed together musically and lyrically, the end of Single being also the first line from Discoteca: (¿Hay una discoteca por acqui?).

Songs in the much more traditional upbeat, lyrically-cynical and clever, electronically pop include To step aside, A red letter day, and Saturday night forever. Tennant begins to allow himself some more direct social commentary in songs like The survivors, which can be understood on many levels. Of course, Tennant's lyrics on the album Behaviour poked fun at those celebrities who, because they have fame, suddenly start taking themselves seriously as experts on social concerns, so he is understandably cautious and understated in his own observations, which are usually very much rooted in his own, direct experiences.

As with many Pet Shop Boys albums, Bilingual had a follow-up single, Somewhere, which was not included on the album, but was on the special edition, limited release of the double-CD Bilingual. This second disc includes in addition to Somewhere remixes of several of the album cuts, as well as an additional b-side.

The songs Before, Single, and A red letter day charted variously around the world, but didn't catch hold and take top honours anywhere. Alas, the Pet Shop Boys looked like they were past it. But history has proven differently.

This is an essential album to anyone who wishes a complete Pet Shop Boys collection -- the special album only for those die-hard collectors who can spend extra on auction sites or some such to track it down, but one gains little musically from it. However, this album is for the most part a placeholder in the overall history of the Pet Shop Boys (for the historically inclined, perhaps it is the 'James Polk' of their albums, adequate but undistinguished, often forgotten, but still on the books).

3 out of 5 stars Single Sputter stop.......2003-01-25

"Bilingual" came under a lot of horn blowing and banner waving.
But how could they top a "Very" amazing record? The answer was, they could not. And having Atlantic records sign PSB after their much ballyhooed "Gay Marketing Division" probably set the banner far too high. It also came out after Neil Tennant's final open admittance to his sexuality. The "Community" had their new heroes and were going to squint down the microscope pretty damn hard when the CD came out.

"Bilingual" is not without its highpoints. The first three tracks hinted at a classic to be, but the attempts at Spanish musical thematics start wearing heavy by "Se a vida e" and it becomes a struggle afterwards to hold one's attention. Not only that, but after the musically soaring "Very," "Bilingual" comes off as tunefully flat and unispired.

Thank God for the lyrics, which have always been the PSB's strong suit. They keep "Bilingual" from falling below three stars. It is just, that from a band who I would rate 4 or 5 stars on the majority of their library, average is a disapointment.

5 out of 5 stars What is this thing ?.......2007-06-12

This is one of my favourite alums of all time, and I already own a few copies of it - the original CD, the "special edition" and the re-issue as part of the "Further Listening" series.

So what is this edition ? How is it different from the other 6 (or so) editions you sell ? What exactly is on this CD, or on the Bonus CD?

The "product details" give me no clue, the "editorial review" gives no clue, and the rest of the information is ... oh wait, there is none.

There are links to tags, links to lists, links to what other people have bought, links to search suggestions, links to sponsored links, links to customer discussions, (beta), links to Amapedia (sic!), links to my recently viewed pages, links to similar items by category, links to music I should hear, links to "blowout music", links to your blog, links to my stuff, ... and links "So you'd like to ..."

Actually what I'd like to do is find out about *this* CD. It is a music album, it has tracks, why are they not listed?

I would like to find out what those tracks are so that I may decide whether I want to buy *this* album. You have already decided - you do not want me to buy this album, you want me to choose from the other myriad links on this page, and buy something else, anything else, anywhere else.

So, goodbye then Amazon, time was when it was fun S-h-o-pp-i-n-g here, when you had products, not links.

Oh: released in 2001 ?
That'll be the "Further Listening" version then. Can you click the "I own it" and "5 stars" boxes for me? Bye.

3 out of 5 stars dance efforts went too much to their heads.......2007-07-22

Luis Mejia (son) - Bilingual may be sincerely the worst album done by Pet Shop Boys, of course, the worst among the best, as I use to call it. Even when it went out after the excellent VERY, its obvious they couldn't follow the fame, still an enjoyable work and extremely mellodic.

Bilingual may be a strong point of discussion among many aspects, apart from being its worst crtisized, its also too much into the dance aspects and the electronical arrengements fit strongly with the "discoteca" ambient instead of the studio efforts and proffessional mature composition. The songs are very mellodic and still enjoyable for even casual listeners, having a techno dance flavour far away from the focused electropop applied in past albums. Also the sound experimentatons went too far to the point of being out of tune and uninspired, like the typical sign of desperation of putting internartional moods and lyrics, and the cheap rap combination in most lyrics, specially in the songs Single, Metamorphosis and Electricity. The two tracks that keep the album of being a disaster are Discoteca, one of my favorites of PSB in their whole career, a song that keeps a lot of originality and effort, and Se A Vida É, which stays very familiar with the sounds of Very, still very mellodic and comfortable. Even though, I have to admit that this album keeps some of the most catchy songs in their whole career.

In conclussion this album goes through a lot of points of discussion, some find it very mellodic, some out of tune, some as the best (certainly not the best) and some as the worst, still you should draw your own conclussions.

3 out of 5 stars It's worth taking the time to dig for the gold, 3 1/2 stars........2004-04-08

When compared to the incredible, and fairly constant, level of the PSB's earlier work, "Billingual", for the most part does not fair too well. Tracks like "Discoteca" & "Single" are nearly devoid of the smart PSB melodies of "Actually" & "Behavior". Instead these rely on a rhythmic departure, a very rigid Latinesque sound, which gets repetitive very quickly, (As do the chorus melodies) and only succeeds (in my opinion) on "Se a Vida É". As long as you are prepared to sift through the material, you will find some absolute gems:

"The Survivors" = is probably my favorite PSB track since, "Behavior". Fantastic melodies.

"Red Letter Day" = Even with some of the structure being fairly generic, it works... well.

"Se a Vida É" = Already mentioned above, but I would highly recommend to purchase the single for this track before, or along with, the album.

"To Step Aside" = Is a Solid Effort.

If you are interest in trying some post-"Very" straight-laced dance fair: buy the "Somewhere" single. The price is more than right for the phenomenal quality, and running time. The remixes are so distinctive, I listen to them consecutively every time and it never wears thin.

The first three tracks hinted at a classic to be, but the attempts at Spanish musical thematics start wearing heavy by "Se a vida e" and it becomes a struggle to hold one's attention afterwards.

4 out of 5 stars under the volcano.......2002-10-27

As I've found a lot of today's radio listening as being boring, I've gone back in time to fill in certain gaps of musical plentitude. Bilingual by the Pet Shop Boys was released in the fall of 1996 while I was working on a movie with Latin based themes; I thought what better to score those daily task than with Latin influenced music. Thus daily spins of Bilingual became commonplace. Tracks Discoteca, Single, Metamorphosis, Se a Vida e', To Step Aside are multicultural amalgamations of heat, rhythm, style, substance, and movement. We're talking disco beats, Latin percussion, cocktail jazz, nuance vocals, and innuendo lyrics aplenty. The upbeat, up-tempo material presented here in all sunny yellow overtones speaks of equatorial holiday - fun in the sun. To stay the mainsail, Up Against It, Red Letter Day, Saturday Night Forever shore up what becomes one of the Pet Shop Boys more adventurous musical odysseys. The real crown jewel on this album is Before. Possibly one of the most beautiful love ballads written by Tennant and Lowe, this song is masterfully crafted, with the perfect accompaniment on guitar by the always-prodigy, Johnny Marr. In no way should this album be taken lightly since the nature of the music and disposition is. Don't be fooled, overtones, undercurrents, hidden layers, depth of field and vision help make Bilingual a stunning musical achievement. . I've often read where some think this is their one off album. I beg to differ. Even on a bad day, Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe are songwriters nonpareil. Giants among mere mortals, the musical moments and compositions on Bilingual shine brightly, complete in themselves. Justification and acknowledgement needed from none.

'Metamorphosis' is just the icing on the cake. How I love the Pet Shop Boys. At first this album feels a little different, like undiscovered territory, but it very soon persuades one that the Boys' genius lives on.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful world music.......2006-01-18

This is a dynamic and engaging band. The vocals are haunting and distinctive. The rythyms are exciting and diverse. The progressive themes of oppression and imperialism resonate today in the Bush dominated world scene with much the same intensity as they did during Reagan's regime. Highly recommended!

3 out of 5 stars Average mixed bag.......2002-04-25

If this obscure band aims for any particular listening audience it is difficult to tell from this album. Some of the songs on this offering can best be compared to light pop music, while others are angled more toward light Latino pop. What results is an indistinctive album that will likely be lost in the back of used CD stores across America.

While its music is not marred by obvious errors, this [apparently]5-person band of unknown roots also seems to lack the fire and punch that would give them breakthrough energy to be really successful. This is what mediocre sound like.
