Amazon.com Essential Recording
The Wall is less a collection of songs than a single work, which is sometimes frustrating; the plot lacks enough coherence to hold the snippets of music together. However, there are occasional flashes of brilliance on what ranks as Pink Floyd's most ambitious project. Most of these come from the fully developed songs, which have become classics in their own right. "Hey You," "Mother," and especially "Comfortably Numb" are subtle, incredible pieces of music. Though complex, they move at a relaxed pace, allowing the listener to absorb them slowly; this kind of pacing was something Pink Floyd excelled at. Also worth noting is the "Another Brick in the Wall/The Happiest Days of Our Lives" medley, which has become a staple of rock radio. --Genevieve WilliamsCustomer Reviews:
A DARK PERSONAL JOURNEY FOR SOME .......2007-07-26
There are some really terrific reviews here already, but I couldn't resist adding my two cents. As others have stated, THE WALL is a polarizing album -- people tend to love it or hate it. I'm one of the ones who love it. When I was introduced to THE WALL, I was going through some pretty rough times psychologically and my misery needed some company. I bought the double album and rented the movie from my local video store. I watched the movie first. I really think that this helped me to be able to grasp the narrative.
The music is somewhat dark, but not inaccessibly morose. Anyone who has ever experienced periods of melancholy should be able to tap into these feelings when listening. It is not an easy listen though. In order to fully appreciate the work, it is best to actively listen, preferably while blocking out other senses and thoughts (i.e., in a darkened room without distractions). I also find that it is impossible to share with others. If the co-listener is not a fan, it is embarrassing to listen to. It makes one feel exposed, uncomfortably naked. If the other participant is a fan, however, the experience is akin to the parallel play observed in toddlers. They are playing alongside each other, but they are not truly interacting.
Although the music is subordinate to the narrative, there are some truly sublime musical moments. The song "Comfortably Numb" is my favorite song of all time. If I can let myself relax, it transports me to another realm everytime I listen to it. The high-pitched ding heard during the chorus focuses my attention and makes me feel as though I am floating on air. Other standouts are "Hey You," "Mother," and "Run Like Hell." Each is beautiful in its own way. "Hey You" is haunting both lyrically and musically. "Mother" is both stark and soothing. I love the back and forth between Waters and Gilmour (as in "Comfortably Numb"). "Run Like Hell" sets strong anti-fascism lyrics to a killer dance beat.
If you are psychologically-inclined, you will love THE WALL. Listen to it when you have the time, alone and in the dark. It just might transform you.
Pink Floyd Under Construction.......2007-07-24
I grew out of it over time and it has become something of a memory machine, revisiting the past and the intensity of that time as I sought meaning in life. It has no relevance on that level anymore.
However, I stumbled across "Pink Floyd: Under Construction" which contains demos of the process by which The Wall came to be. Apparently, Waters, in the late 70s, came to the band with ideas for The Wall and what would become The Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking. The band thought the material for The Wall had potential and began to build on it (though there are traces of The Wall material in the Hitchhiking album or vice versa).
Though for the most part it is the same album, there are some subtle and significant differences in the songs as we know them, mostly in the lyrics.
Comfortably Numb originally began for Gilmour's first solo album but made its way into The Wall. Gilmour brings the melody; Waters adds the lyrics. However, imagine these lyrics in "Comfortably Numb":
"Wake up now, pull yourself togeather
Get out and meet new people (Scream)
I'm sure they'll understand
Come on, put away the shotgun,
Here have another blue one(Scream)
Have your fingertips gone numb?"
Or these for "Mother":
"Mama's gonna check out all your girlfriends for you
Mama won't let anyone dirty get through
Mama's gonna burn all your pornography
She'll watch what you see and watch what you hear..."
It's fascinating to listen to these demos after knowing the album so well. It's as if I'm hearing it for the first time and it is mind blowing this time from a more historical, archival point of view rather than as music that defines my emotional life.
You'll find the song What Shall We Do Now? in the film but not on the album, though the lyrics are on the inner sleeve of the original album. The song is on the Under Construction disc. Young Lust is just an instrumental. This is a fan's dream. It's like being there as the creative process unfolds and you can see the roll Bob Ezrin played in bringing this to its finished form that we all know.
Hunt down a copy of Under Construction and really, really appreciate just how amazing this album really is.
You can also get hints of Roger Waters taking control of the direction of the sound and how it would culminate with Floyd in The Final Cut, the trajectory Waters taking climaxing with The Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking (also very recommended).
The Wall ,,,,,,Nuf Said.......2007-07-15
Waters dominated effort hurtling toward a dark and dreary place.......2007-07-12
That being said, there are enjoyable musical moments on this work. As others have noted, The Wall, is colored to a much greater extent by the personality of Roger as his works became lyrically denser at the expense of the fine instrumental passages of the earlier works. There are also songs that you simply want to skip (thank goodness for CDs). Some songs, such as "Comfortably Numb", have personally become more meaningful due to circumstances occuring in my life (my dad was in a coma). So, I wouldn't dismiss the entire work as rubbish...just be prepared for a Pink Floyd on steriods/cocaine (seems the Lysergic had declined in popularity).
Great Album.......2007-07-11

Anyone looking for the key to Abba's enduring appeal should look no further than "Voulez Vous" and "Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight)" for their answer. There was an innocence to the Swedish quartet, even when they were singing about one-night stands and the invitations to them. Gold establishes that the band, while appreciated as campy, were actually multifaceted in their execution. "S.O.S." has a raw urgency in its chorus, and "Does Your Mother Know" draws its energy from classic '50s rock & roll. Likewise, you don't have to be Priscilla to swoon over "Mamma Mia" or "Dancing Queen." And when it comes to drama, those soaring vocals on "The Winner Takes It All" turn the song into a bitter anthem of every relationship that has ever fallen apart. The much-covered "Lay All Your Love on Me" is practically epic. --Steve GdulaCustomer Reviews:

Album Description
The individual voices of the legendary Brothers GibbMaurice, Barry, and Robinare each wonderfully distinctive in their own right. In combination, they lock together for extraordinary harmonies, perfectly blending and magically complementing each other. This vocal wizardry is at the heart of their phenomenal success, which spanned five decades and transcended multiple genres with chart-busting glory. From their Beatles-esque `60s roots and the subsequent flowering of their own progressive pop-rock songwriting and performance style through their blue-eyed R&B superstardom and Saturday Night Fever disco-era domination, the Bee Gees constantly evolved and never stopped delivering timeless hits. The trio's beautifully crafted, sonically enchanting work is one of the cornerstones of contemporary popular music, and this hit-packed compilation spotlights their career-spanning best.Customer Reviews:

It's the most complete single-disc collection of EWF chart rockers, and Greatest Hits' splendid remastering makes one of the major exponents of '70s funk positivity sound sparkling. From the driving "Shining Star" to the syncopated mastery of "September" and "Boogie Wonderland" to the slow-jam heaven of "After the Love Is Gone," this is a reminder of what made the group so special. --Rickey WrightCustomer Reviews:

The double-disc soundtrack to the blockbuster Saturday Night Fever (available on a single CD) marks both the zenith and the nadir of disco. It was such a popular sensation that it catapulted the music to stratospheric levels of mainstream popularity, and the album was the bestselling movie soundtrack of all time (until The Bodyguard, and then Titanic). But "Disco Fever" became so hot, it could only flame out just as quickly (along with the careers of the Bee Gees). With this record, disco became a phenomenon and a fad. The Bee Gees' contributions are the strongest, especially the once-ubiquitous "Stayin' Alive" and "Night Fever," and they still hold up. Then there's Walter Murphy's "A Fifth of Beethoven," a trivial piece of pop ephemera that may have set new standards for ephemeral triviality. How often will you listen to this record--and how much will you play when you do? There's no telling--but it remains a classic piece of pop history, and when you're in the mood it's a good thing to have around. --Jim EmersonCustomer Reviews:

Freaking amazing.......2007-04-28
ANYWAY! This album is amazing. I got this for my 13th birthday when I was in 7th grade, and it was one of the best albums I could have gotten. This album is a good size and has a whole darned lot of songs on it, (all of which, may I add, are great.) I reccomend (sp? lol) this to anybody who has heard Blondie's music before and knows just how great it truly is. Within 3 years of getting this album I now own all of their CDs plus 3 vinyls. It's truly amazing. Blondie are one of the greatest bands in history for sure.

Pure Pop Culture..Cashing In On "Disco" Revival Of The 90s.......2007-04-16
Where's Cerrone "Supernature", Giorgio "From Here To Eternity", Alec R. Costandinos "Romeo & Juliet", Machine "There But For The Grace Of God Go I", Jumbo "Turn On To Love" and could go on and on (probably 90% of the folks reading this right now dont even know what those tunes I mentioned are).
Those tunes I mentioned are basic common club play disco from back when...im not even goin mega deep here, just mentioning a few of the REAL disco bilboard hit basics here. Sure, to promote the pop hits, most of these tunes on this comp were played in the corse of the night in 12" remixed format...but they were not the main attraction as pop culture believes!
If anyone is truely interested to hear what disco was really about and wants to get a small taste of the hard true disco sounds, if you can find it (since its out of print), look up the CD comps The Best Disco In Town vol 3 (whole CD) and The Best Disco In Town vol.2 (75% of this CD is true disco) put out by the now gone Hot Productions...there you'll get a small taste of the REAL disco hits from the 1976 - 1980 era which kept everyone dancin and havin fun (with a few early 80s ones thrown in). Forget this pop culture cash in on what the radio mainstream called disco (and if this is what disco really was, I wouldnt blame em one bit for the whole disco sucks movement...but this IS NOT REAL DISCO!).
Like I said, I DO give em credit for putting a few tracks on here that actually were REAL club hits and not on every pop comp (Gibson Brothers "Cuba" is the main one that stands out). But don't take my word for it, seek out the 2 comps I mentioned above and hear for yourself!

"Totally Gnarly" or "Gag me with a Spoon"?.......2007-05-31
Fond nostalgia aside, the whole 'retro' thing is forcing the 80's upon us once again and you might as well admit that you were one of the characters from The Breakfast Club! (Mmmmmm....Ally Sheedy.)
Dropping these discs into my player and hitting shuffle just makes it all come flooding back!
But to tell a shameful truth? I really HAD to buy this set because of "Pac-Man Fever" by Buckner and Garcia and "Sweetheart" by Franke & the Knockouts. I've never seen these songs anywhere else!
I'm not sure I even looked at the other songs before my credit card was being swiped by the good folks at Amazon!!
So, yeah, again, I bought on impulse but I damn sure don't regret it!! In fact, I'd suggest we embrace the "ME, ME, ME" decade just once more and "BUY, BUY, BUY" this set.
If you went to high school in the 80's like I did, simply put, this will bring back some great memories.
(Unless, of course, your high school years sucked. To which, I say, "That's too bad. I'm sorry for you.")
Either way, just admit that the 80's were a great time for music and pastel suits and thin leather ties.........(chicks dig the thin tie still, right? Right? Anybody? Can I get a witness?)
Where's Don Johnson when I need him?
Oh, here he is....Disc 6, Song 19!

this set. The 80s were my high school and college years and I was
certainly guilty of listening to the radio .... This set is awesome and
is really made indispensable with the booklet. My only gripe lies with
the artists that were huge in the 80s, but evidently could not be licensed
for this set....Notably U2, REM, Hoodoo Gurus, Wall of Voodoo, etc

Amazon.com essential recording
For those music buyers who have enjoyed Barry White's music since the early 1970s but may not be devoted enough for the three-CD box set Just for You, this 20-track compilation brings together all of White's major chart hits between 1973 and 1979, along with a couple of entries from his Love Unlimited Orchestra. White's distinctive vocal style--a deep, resonant baritone-bass that oozes sex appeal--was the icing on the cake for those hits; superlative string arrangements (courtesy of the late Gene Page) encased White in a lush setting, while White's hand-picked rhythm section (which included many of Los Angeles's top session players) created a groove that was hard to beat. The combination was lethal: hits like "Never, Never Gonna Give You Up," "Can't Get Enough of Your Love, Babe," and "You're My First, My Last, My Everything" made White a chart staple and an early king of disco; his skill as a vocal interpreter was fully evident on a 1979 reading of Billy Joel's "Just the Way You Are," another standout on this collection. On the evidence of that track alone, it's hard to believe that, according to legend, White never planned to be a recording artist in his own right and would have been happy to remain in the background as producer and songwriter! --David NathanAmazon.com
The most hot-buttered of all soul singers, Barry White is an artist whose CDs come with a purpose. To say what that purpose is, is not for a family Web site--but it involves that thing that Mommy and Daddy do at night with the bedroom door closed. All-Time Greatest Hits collects the essential White and Love Unlimited Orchestra tracks onto a packed CD. Are 20 cuts too much? Not with Viagra. That's a kind of medicine that grownups take. --Gavin McNettCustomer Reviews:
