As learned from the broad-based popularity of his previous albums, people turn to saxophonist Boney James to do one thing: create sultry audio backdrops well suited for mingling, small talk, and romantic notions. James, rotating between tenor, soprano, and alto saxophones, faithfully delivers more of those goods on this, his sixth album. The mood sustained throughout all nine tracks (42-plus minutes runtime) is urbane, low-key, and cue-ball smooth. Chelle Davis provides breathy background vocals on the slow-grooving opening track, "Are You Ready?" and R&B crooners Shai take a more foreground role on the sweetly disarming "I'll Always Love You." Perhaps the album's most attractive cut is the slow urban crawl of "Boneyizm," with subdued interplay between James's tenor sax and Rick Braun's flügelhorn. Nothing shrill, outrageous, new, or significant awaits here, simply an engaging and pleasant listen. --Terry Wood

5 out of 5 stars More than backdrop music.......2007-01-20

The Amazon reviewer stated that this CD was "sultry audio backdrops well suited for mingling, small talk, and romantic notions." While this is true to a point, "Body Language" is so much more. Try relaxing at home with it--no one else around--no distractions. Close your eyes and listen without any interference between your ears and Boney. The experience will be like draping a rich, deep blue velvet blanket all over you. Sultry? YES! Mingling and small talk? OK, but you're missing so much if that's the only time you listen to Body Language.

I am still finding my way around the smooth jazz genre, and Boney James is definitely on a fast track to becoming one of my all time favorites. And every time I listen to another one of his albums I think, "now THIS has got to be my favorite one by him". But Body Language *is* my favorite one, hands down. He grooves, he cajoles, he flirts, he seduces, he pleads, he dances... all with his sax, and with crystal clear arrangements and songs that seem to get even better every time you listen to them. I luuuurve the man! Ten stars out of five!

5 out of 5 stars Boney Is The Bomb.......2006-08-21

This is one of his older CDs, but one of my favorites. The music is smooth and wonderful to listen to. Great CD after a long day or to play on a special night.

5 out of 5 stars His Masterpiece.......2006-08-19

This CD is a PURE delight from start to finish. Flawless sound mix and songwriting. His tone is wonderfully understated yet very passionate. Boney is the master of the "come on over baby" riff, he's smooth as silk with the sax. His best CD.

After 16 years in the pop diva business, Kylie Minogue doesn't bother reinventing herself. Maybe that's why Body Language sounds so effortlessly appealing. Confidence permeates the record's savvy mix of modern and retro, implanting slinky tunes like "Slow" into your brain's guilty pleasure section. Aided greatly by producer Kurtis Mantronik's resourceful touch, sparse electroclash rhythms blend easily with Minogue's shrewd pop sense, milking it for maximum catchiness. True, Kylie's barely-there voice remains a weak spot, and her attempt at rap on "Secret (Take You Home)" doesn't quite work (though it's better than you might think). More often, those helium tones are put to effective use; her sighing vocal on "Chocolate" is pure, sweet decadence. Prince himself might be a little envious of how well Mantronik lays down the 1999-style electro-funk, as tracks like "Still Standing" glide along on computer soul and the singer's practiced tease. And therein lies Body Language's most impressive feat: It makes Minogue's plastic sex appeal sound not just like the most natural thing in the world, but like an honest-to-God artistic statement. --Matthew Cooke

5 out of 5 stars Kylie's Best Album By Far..........2007-07-14

I've been a fan of Kylie from way back so I know all of her catalogue well. "Body Language" is in my opinion her best album by some margin. It saw her adopt a sophisticated urban/pop sound with great songs and outstanding production. Widely under-appreciated and misunderstood, "Body Language" was the album that showed Kylie Minogue had the potential to release serious pop music. It's a pity more people weren't more receptive to her willingess and courage on this album to explore new horizons and move beyond that which is safe and predictable. If you are a new fan seeking one album to introduce you to Kylie's true potential, skip the remainder of her catalogue and buy "Body Language" because this is the album where her talents truly shine.

4 out of 5 stars Sign Language needed as well as Body Language.......2007-03-19

"Body Language" was always going to be a difficult album to listen to following the previous success of Kylie Minougue's No.1 U.K. and No. 3 U.S. album, "Fever". For die hard Kylie fans, the album was fine and included the "Breaking the mould" U.K. No.1 "Slow", but interest soon dissipated after that. I thoroughly enjoyed the album, but I would be considered one of the "die hards". In the U.S. the album didn't live up the expectations of it's predecessor, which is a shame because that means it has become over-looked, sandwiched between the "Fever" album and the "Ultimate Kylie" double album. A new re-listening of the album will guarantee that you will find it more of a surprise than you thought of it before!

5 out of 5 stars Her best album.....it is a MILLION times better than Fever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-03-15

Forget Fever already, it WAS a good album, but Listen to Body Language it is a million times better, hands down. Every song is well thought out and has a darker, sexier edge than Fever. Fever is just fluff compaired to this album. Those of you that think that she should have stuck with the sound from Fever are all wrong....an artist should grow and change with each and every album (as Madonna does). Kylie has it all right here is so many ways....Fever was a great tounge in check sugar-pop album, and Body language is a Sexy, sassy pop album with an edge. Some reviewers have said that all the songs sound the same, NOT TRUE....ARE you people deaf??? Also, Slow is a great song but surely NOT the best song on the CD as many have said (think for yourself at least once in your life...just because it was a hit, doesn't make it the best song. Quit being a follower and use your own head, no, no,no to sheep...don't be one.) , "I Feel for You" is the best song in my eyes, fun sexy and catchy. "After Dark" is another great track one of her best songs EVER!!!!!! Kylie has made a perfect record, and I hope she makes more and more. I hope she changes with each and every album...because that is what keeps people intrested. Thanks Kylie you ROCK!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Sexy and lush.......2007-02-20

In the time when pop music is becoming something to run from, when even the younger generations will choose rock bands instead of Britney Spears, there is one little lady that is still proud of what she is doing. Unlike Madonna, who constantly re-invents herself (always gorgeously, of course), Kylie Minogue decides to accept the pop territory as her art, and having peed on it for a long time, there's no way she's going anywhere.
So, here comes "Body Language", Kylie's last studio album. The first thing you notice is that it's much more retro - on the cover, Kylie is being sexy in that old-fashioned way, where it's not about how much you expose, than HOW you expose it. Wow, what a way to age! And the songs are the same way - although they are undoubtedly sexy, she merely suggests her sexiness instead of talking about how she does it (here that, Britney?).
The album opens with the minimal "Slow", which are essentially clusters of beats and hooks linked by Kylie's whisper. It is catchy and a great opening. From then on, it goes through a number of songs which all stand for themselves as great tracks (especially "Secret (Take You Home)" and "Promises", which are both retro and modern at the same time). "Red Blooded Woman" is very hip and upbeat and "Chocolate" might as well be the best track, capturing the lush feel of chocolate melting in one's mouth, and just like the chocolate, the song melts in a sexiest way possible. "Someday" is similar, very calm and lullaby-ish, as it suggests the end of the album. There are also two bonus tracks, "Cruise Control" and "You Make Me Feel", which are both great.
Snap-snap for Kylie Minogue. She has achieved stardom, and is now confident enough in herself to release a very moderate, yet accomplished album. It's the same old Kylie, and she's not going anywhere. "Body Language" proves it.

    5 out of 5 stars A Forgotten, Unknown Gem.......2007-07-30

    Wow.

Not many people know of the existence of this flop album from 1990. Now, almost two decades after its' release, its almost impossible to find, and used copies go for hundreds of dollars on Ebay (if you're lucky).

    Why is this so good?

Reason No. 1 : Jordan Knight. Ana, then virtually unknown (though VERY well known to readers of "Teen Beat") released a single with him called "Angel of Love" (a very 80s sounding synthetic ballad, but it works). This could be called the highlight of the album, but to me it was amongst the more generic of the songs here.

Reason No. 2 : Debbie Gibson. I had this magazine in 1990 that chronicled Debbie and Ana working together in the studio for a song called "Everytime we say Goodbye". When I got this album on cassette, I made it a point to hear this song first. This could have been a track from Debster's "Electric Youth" album - its just that good - and Ana's amazing voice only takes it to the next level. Simply wonderful.

Reason No. 3 : The last track - "Friendly" - this has GOT to be the most UNDERRATED track from the soundscape of 1990s female songstresses. It really is that good. Listen, and hum.

Well lets face it - not many people are ever going to own this album. I have a copy and I treasure it, because I remember the time when I was in my early teens and when pop music by Paula Abdul, NKOTB and Tiffany were clean, wholesome entertainment. This is a fantastic slice of that era, and I urge you to source out a copy from somewhere.

    5 out of 5 stars What a voice!.......2004-11-26

Ana came to my attention after the major slew of teen girls had hit it big (Tifffany, Martika, Debbie Gibson) in the early 90s. Where had they been hiding this girl? Apparently she was big in Japan w/ her 87 (??) debut and had a minor dance hit w/ her single "Shy Boys".

Maurice Starr (the man behind NKOTB) took her under his wing and boy am I glad he did. Though she pretty much can be considered a "no-hit" wonder, she has a gift that can put the afore mentioned 80s teen queens to shame...her voice! This girl can sing!

BODY LANGUAGE is her sophmore effort and was produced in part by Maurice Starr, Deborah Gibson and Kiki Almaguer (??)/Héctor García (two ex-Miami Sound Machine members). The material itself does not differ that much from the other teen pop of the day, but I can say this enough, the voice that came out of this 16 year old was jaw-dropping. Imagine a Toni Braxton type voice coming out of this tiny girl. The first single "Got To Tell Me Something" peaked at #60 something, but another song got some airplay. That being the duet w/ ex-New Kid and Surreal Life alumni, Jordan Knight, "Angel of Love". I must admit the reason I actually bought this album in the first place was because my then obsessoin, Debbie Gibson, produced 2 tracks on this album. "Everytime We Say Goodbye" has to be one of my favorite songs of all time, of course it sounds very "Debbie" but Deborah only wishes she had a 1/4 of the power that comes of Ana's voice. Another example of this little lady's power comes via the ballad "Over and Over". Why she was not a star is beyond me. Life's not fair I guess. Since I am rambling, another noteworthy song is the title track (yes she had a "Body Langue" before Kylie).

So it's been nearly 14 years since the album was released. I always wondered what became of this girl w/ the booming voice. Turns out she's been reincarnated as Mia, a sexy Latin pop singer recording for Univision Records!!! There is a God! I'm glad she's been given a second chance, and that her voice has not gone to waste. For those of you just discovering Mia, I highly recommend checking out her previous teen pop fodder. Highly enjoyable.

This trio of recent works by Salonen suggests that he's one of the most interesting composers on today's scene. All three share the virtues of his highly individual style, modernistic and accessible. Foreign Bodies is in three parts and is concerned with the unity of music and the body. It opens with a machine-tooled movement of driving rhythms and color-drenched orchestration. The second is more relaxed, with subtle washes of color, and the finale, titled "Dance," returns to rhythm as a motivating force, albeit with a fascinating twittering woodwind-led climax. Wing on Wing's title derives from a sailing term but also might describe the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, home of the city's Philharmonic, for which it was written. It's an adventurous work featuring a pair of coloratura sopranos singing wordlessly, human instruments part of an orchestral fabric that also incorporates a manipulated tape of architect Frank Gehry's voice and another of a fish whose call is seamlessly incorporated into the texture. Insomnia begins with a brief dreamlike passage, the bulk of the piece a succession of restless, often obsessive episodes; some threatening, others frantically joyful, but always constantly engrossing and punctuated by virtuoso solos from the orchestra. A fascinating disc that should be heard. --Dan Davis

3 out of 5 stars Wing on Wing Doesn't Fly.......2007-06-27

Recently Esa Pekka Salonen was here in New York City. He was charismatic, forceful and literally made the music soar at Alice Tully Hall. I quickly bought this CD and another of his and sat down to enjoy the music.

The music on this CD, however, was not to my liking. It was a little too modern for me and I tried listening to it again the next day but came away with the same feeling.

I also think that the sound was tinny and while there was nothing wrong with the disc the orchestra did not sound complete despite Salonen's solid direction.

I'm glad I have it in my collection but it's not for everyone and unfortunately I'm one of those persons.

5 out of 5 stars This is absolutely great music........2006-01-08

I'm no expert in Esa-Pekka Salonen and his compositional style, but this is absolutely great music. I love his vivid orchestration and different musical colors he utilizes in each of the pieces. And unlike the radical, atonal music of French conductor-composer Pierre Boulez, Salonen's music is relatively more accesible in terms of sonority (I've heard pieces by other extreme composers like Schoenberg and Penderecki, okay?).

To a beginner of contemporary Classical Music, it may take time, but for the experienced, one should never hesitate to buy the album. The music is simply dazzling, if not wierd or even psychedelic. "Wing on Wing", featuring two coloratura sopranos, is especially worth listening. Good way to witness "Art Music" beyond the new millenium.

    5 out of 5 stars Simply great!.......2005-04-04

This is a stunning issue. On this showing, Esa Pekka Salonen the composer is right up there with such living luminaries as John Adams or John Corigliano, or even outshine them, and this magnificent collection of his recent works bears that out. This is, above all, "tonality rediscovered." There are unmistakable traces of minimalism, serialism, and even atonality in every piece on this disc, but they are all powerful and lyrical by turns and highly accessible. Sibelian points of reference can also be felt, particularly in Insomnia, reminidng us that he is, after all, a Finn who learned composition from Eijojuhani Rautavaara. A major issue in every way.

5 out of 5 stars Very accessible new music.......2005-03-10

I heard Salonen conduct his work "Insomnia" with the Chicago Symphony last season. It was an exciting piece, performed well, and the audience that night received it with great applause. When I saw this new recording was available I ordered it right away. After several listenings I'm even more impressed with Salonen's compositional skills. All three works on this CD are impressive. The pieces are accessible and highly listenable. They challenge you to meet the composer in his world of sound. The best new music has a sense of purpose and direction, and this music doesn't disappoint. "Wing on Wing" includes soprano vocalise as another element of color.
If you respond to this music as I have, then try his earlier CD titled "LA Variations". This CD, "Wing on Wing" is recommeded without reservation. Salonen is an important composer/conductor of our time.

    5 out of 5 stars Esi-Pekki's World.......2005-02-16

Invading foreign bodies, bacteria, sailing ships as architecture; it seems to me that Salonen is going Sci-Fi with his new compilation of his latest works. And so maybe it is not a co-incidence that I feel that actually all of the pieces here, especially Wing-on-Wing, sound like classical versions of the music of a Jean-Michel Jarre playing to a movietheme...

Having said that, I find this music very very attractive, at times a bit nervous, yet always innovative and interesting, especially in terms of orchestration and color. Salonen is a master of orchestration. Wing-on-Wing is a true highlight to me, and can stand right side by side with his earlier opus magnum, LA Variations. Especially the two sopranos shine, and the 'duets' they perform against the orchestra are truly stunning.

    Highly recommended.

PS: When does he make his next recording with the LA Phil?

5 out of 5 stars My all-time favorite Patti Austin CD........2007-03-03

"Body Language" is my favorite Patti Austin CD. Virtually all ten tracks are superb but the gorgeous "I Want You Tonight", "S.O.S.", "We've Got Tonight" and the Isaac Hayes-penned title track remain among Patti's best songs. Although this album was not a commercial success it has stood the test of time and remains just as enjoyable today as in 1980. Many thanks to Sony Music Entertainment (Germany) for reissuing this great album on CD and for remastering it so well.

      5 out of 5 stars Superb EFX!.......2001-02-18

This is one of the finer EFX albums. No particular track rises above any of the others as they are all exceptionally crafted. The compositions are intricate, but not overwhelming, and the confident smooth guitar playing of Chieli Minucci is at its best. Each number is singly a work of art. This is one of those albums that you never want to end. If you have ever heard or owned a Special EFX album, this is the one for your collection that you cannot afford to do without.
