Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

5 out of 5 stars Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23

THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.

5 out of 5 stars Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14

This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway

5 out of 5 stars Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17

If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars CLASSIC IN ANY CATERGORY OR TIME PERIOD.......2007-06-17

This album is real hip hop. Intelligent, flawless lyrics, killer flows blows anything current out of the water. One of the top MC's and albums of all time.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best Hip Hop albums ever!.......2007-05-12

This record was great for so many reasons.

Rhymes:
Kane was a wordsmith like no other. He could spit rapid fire battle rhymes or he lay it on smooth for the ladies. In fact, Kane could combine the two! "Smooth Operator" finds Kane destroying his competition "in a calm manner" while still loving the ladies.

Beats:
The variety of sounds on this record is delight to the ears. "Young, Gifted, and Black" gives you that '70s Blaxploitation feel. The sampled horns behind Kane's rhymes takes you to another place. It's smooth, but not soft. And who can forget "I Get the Job Done"? Teddy Riley's percussion arrangement is sure to keep the head nodding back and forth.

Style:
This was one of the intangibles Kane brought to the game. In the videos Kane sported three piece suites, and slick warm up outfits. His demeanor and body language were both aggressive and smooth simultaneously. That dichotomy seems to be lost on many rappers today. Kane's bravado never overshadowed his fierce intelligence. In fact, Kane's gift was his ability to take that aggression and bravado and channel it through his incredible ability to articulate and construct with his words.

If you truly love Hip Hop, you must have a copy of this in your collection.

4 out of 5 stars Big Daddy Kane With Emphasis.......2007-04-27

1989 was truly the year of the BDK, with a fitting album like this. Who didn't like "Smooth Operator"? I didn't care for the "Lean On Me Remix"; I prefer the original that appeared in Morgan Freeman's movie "Lean On Me". Everything else was da bomb!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL SECOND ALBUM.......2007-02-02

to me, kane was at his sharpest on this album. no matter what style he unveiled, the man was simply on point. i just wish that he was a little more consistent with his other albums. i also think that the movie thing messed him up a bit. his first two albums are his best stuff. i highly recommend them.

5 out of 5 stars Big Daddy Kane's reputation rests on his 1st & 2nd albums...................2006-06-25

Once again another 1989 banger. Kane came into his own on his second joint. Relentless fire lyrics carried this album much more than the beats. Fav's are Pimpin ain't Easy ( with Nice & Smooth), Another Victory, Lean on Me, Warm it up Kane and basically the whole album. This is Big Daddy Kane at his finest before fell off due to chasing skirts,Madonna and making sappy songs with Barry White and Spinderella. All is forgiven now, due to Kane's influence on Jay and B.I.G.

5 out of 5 stars The greatest songs ever?.......2007-07-26

I heard 'clear or cloudy', from this recording, on the radio recently and had to purchase it. It is strange but it is the sort of song that makes life prior to listening to it different from life after. I find it sad that so many people haven't heard it. There are also many other wonderful works in this collection. Given you get twelve well recorded CDs with top quality performances, this has to be one of the bargains of the age.

Please buy it.

5 out of 5 stars A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10

Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.

The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).

This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.

I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.

5 out of 5 stars a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15

I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.

Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

4 out of 5 stars Very hip-hop in the fullest sense from Keith Murray.......2006-06-20

I don't think that anything Keith Murray put after this release topped this one. Real, raw hip hop that Erick Sermon produced, but Keith runs the show with some hot rhymes, flows, and beats/music to match with his voice. He can be crazy and funny at times, but it's his style that nobody touched. Many of the songs are funky. I actually like the original version of the title song instead of the version made for radio that interpolates the Isley Brothers' Between the Sheets. The original version is RAW, all beats and scratches, very hip-hop and allows Keith to rap freestyle over the beats! I hope that Keith gets past some minor setbacks to make another hot album because his rap style is definitely missed.

3 out of 5 stars Has hits .......2005-11-28

If you get this it has hits but not solid overall some stuff you would just listen to and skip it, No diss Keith but Enigma was a whole lot better

5 out of 5 stars D to the E to the F.......2005-10-29

Keith Murray is one of the most underated emcees, and its a shame cos this is a classic. Keith comes up with fast and witty lyrics throughout and E-Dubs production was on fire in the mid nineties, this is no exception. I would advise this to fans of Murray since its his best(notice how most rappers debuts are their best), and fans of def squad, since Reggie, Jamal and Erick all feature. dare iz a darkside and double or nothing are classic too. dont sleep, def squad is the illest.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty Solid solo debut for Keith Murray.......2005-08-07

Hands down, one of the best lyricists in rap ever to grace the mic, shows us why with his debut album. Some of the $h!+ he says is unbelieveable and his flow is great as well. Probably his best solo album he's done. Only has 12 songs, 1 classic, 4 ok ones, and the other 7 are good or great songs. Guests are on 4 songs (one with Def Squad and one with L.O.D.) and they're all tight as well (with 1 exception). Production is good for a 1994 release, and mainly because it's done by Erick Sermon (he gets help from Rod Kirkpatrick and one song Busta Rhyumes co-produces) and Redman does 1 as well. The beats are mainly deep bass funky beats that Keith rips up. A must have album for fans of real lyrics and hip hop.

In 1967, the phrase "New Thing" had been applied to free jazz, so when Sly Stone dubbed his debut A Whole New Thing, his addition of Whole was vital. He kicked out "Underdog" with long horn lines, fast rhythms, and his own urgent delivery--certainly an opening salvo that spoke multiple languages. The horn charts hit the soul tip, and the energy jumped in the psychedelic rock volcano with gusto. "Trip to Your Heart," with its warpy effects and stoned backing vocals, hit the high mark for the Family's foray into psychedlia, where "Turn Me Loose," with its rapid, jerking funk rhythms and quick, sharp horn blasts, made it clear that Sly was simpatico with the revolution that took the beats to the streets. And for good measure, "Let Me Hear It from You" is all slow-smolder, an expert R&B ballad delivered by bass virtuoso Larry Graham. The five bonus tracks round out what remains a far-reaching, claim-staking debut that belongs in every collection. --Andrew Bartlett

4 out of 5 stars Trip to Your Heart.......2007-05-26

This album's greatness is only diminished by Sly & the Family Stone's subsequent efforts. Check out "Trip to Your Heart" to hear where LL Cool J got the groovy sample for "Mama Said Knock You Out"

3 out of 5 stars A beginning........2007-05-15

1967 in San Francisco music is probably best remembered for the psychedelic rock bands and the Summer of Love, but perhaps the most criminally overlooked emergence in that scene is that of Sly & the Family Stone. Formed by DJ and producer Sly Stone, the band was (as best I can recall) the first integrated pop act, with white and black musicians (and a woman in a role other than as a vocalist) working out Stone's stew of funk, soul and psychedelic rock. While debut album "A Whole New Thing" is a bit less ambitious and worthwhile than future albums, it certainly has all the pieces-- Stone's great, hook-laden songwriting, ably performed by a band anchored by a virtually unparalleled rhythm section of bassist Larry Graham and drummer Greg Errico.

Opener "Underdog" is a great example of everything that's right here-- Sly hits a hot vocal on the verses over a galloping funk rhythm with the whole piece hitting a boil at the chorus-- the band's many vocalists chant the chorus over which Stone cries in an almost preacher-like fashion. This is the formula under which the band seems to succeed best-- similar great efforts can be found on "If This Room Could Talk" and the fierce "I Cannot Make It". The rest of the album doesn't fare as well, alternating between mid-tempo funk pieces ("Run, Run, Run", "Advice") and soul balladry (Larry Graham's turn at a lead on "Let Me Hear It From You" is the best of these). None of it is bad per se, but a lot of it is fairly generic, the notable exception being "Trip to Your Heart", featuring what sounds like a psychedelic improv intro and bridge.

This reissue remasters the album, appending several bonus tracks (leftovers, additional album tracks from reissues and some mono single mixes). It sounds fantastic, crisp and clean, that has the effect of actually rendering the music a bit more relevent-- it sounds a bit more timeless with a clean sound. The artwork reproduces the original liner notes and includes a new essay on the album.

"A Whole New Thing" is really a beginning-- Sly and the Family Stone would go on to a lot better material in the next few years. This ons has its moments, but pales in comparison to the band's later work.

5 out of 5 stars Let's Hear It For Sly First Time Around!!!!.......2007-04-19

Presenting Sly & The Family Stone, brand new band reaching out to the summer of love! And 'A Whole New Thing' a great contribution. What Sly presents on this album is not exactly funk but a supercharged variety of soul, embellished with 60's rock touches. This style is known as psychedelic soul and this is a very early example. As far as the songs are concerned "Underdog",the first song and "Dog",the last song are among the strongest examples, and the catchiest.Strange enough this is the only Sly album that really has any distinct ballads, notably the gospelish "That Kind Of Person".Now this album has some pretty obvious points against it,but only when compared to the brilliant Dance to the Music,Life and Stand!.That point is that, especially in case of the brilliant "Advice" and "I Hate To Love Her" is that each of these songs tends be be bogged down in mountains of musical ambition;within less then three minutes sometimes there is more information packed into them then most full albums have.So this never had an enormous breakout single but Larry Graham's solo vocal on another ballad gospel type tune "Let Me Hear It From You" does leap out as an obvious single.Strangly enough "Only One Way Out Of This Mess" and "What Would I Do",two bonus tracks have incredible hooks and are the strongest "hit" type songs you'll hear on this album.Another bonus track "You Better Help Yourself" opens the door to the genre of proto funk;a groovier variety of soul based in rhythm. So while nothing on 'A Whole New Thing' truely leaps out as a hit record it does live up to it's name by presenting a unique sound and a legendary band.

5 out of 5 stars Superstar Material .......2007-01-10

Tanya does an amazing job on Natural Thing (1994)Superstar Material & Voice (*****)
She should have hit the charts with greater success, obviously. Let's hope she can return to the R&B/Dance spotlight by recording some new material. Influences include Whitney Houston(on No More Lies), Ce Ce Peniston (on Natural Thing) Plus plenty of her own magic. Though The Rain,For The Right Reasons, Love Ballad, and Baby Love really make this package rock!
Tanya's voice is magic! You'll love all or most of this disc.

5 out of 5 stars brian.......2005-09-19

this is on of the most greatest albums i brought i never knew she have even done a cd up until recent when i heard through the rain i love it from the moment she started sing i love her from sister act she have a really powerful voice differs somewhat from whitney but alot compare to her vocal style on of my favorite song there is i don't wanna spend another nite that note she hits at the end of the song great just tonya if u out there i would love to record a song with u girl hopefully that day will come soon

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2005-03-26

You can say she really has a Whitney-voice. So strong and beautiful. "For all the good reasons" is just one of the many beautiful songs on her album. She has soul, she has a message and she should have recorded much more. Today you can still catch her as a singer of Christian songs. Don't miss !

4 out of 5 stars Fabulous debut! .......2004-09-20

Ten years ago this past summer, I bought Tanya Blount's only album that she made. I was just blown away by her voice! I heard Through the Rain and immediately got her album. I also liked Hold On and her remake of LTD's Love Ballad. The other songs are just as solid a mix of smooth ballads and uptempo dance tunes. She sounded mature for her voice on these songs. I thought that her next album was going to come on Sean Combs' Bad Boy Records, but it never happened. Maybe the deal failed or something. I just imagined Puffy producing most of the album and maybe Mario Winans, Stevie J, Ron Lawrence and others on there. Would have been a hot album. Never took place. Tanya, if you're out there, you made a solid album and I wished that it would have been promoted a lot more. Shame on Mercury Records for dropping you off their roster--they missed out on a quality, soulful album you made for them!!!!!!!

4 out of 5 stars A NICE START.......2003-09-30

Tanya Blount was in SISTER ACT II, where she performed a stellar version of "His eye is on the sparrow"(with the great Lauryn Hill)

She has a strong voice and is enthusiastic. "Through the rain" is the big single on the album. It is a tender ballad and shows her to be a talented vocalist for her age at that time. The song features background vocals by Stacey Lattisaw! Tonya does a rousing remake of LTD's "Love Ballad". A song that is not easy for just anyone to remake. She does a splendid job. Another catchy single "Im gonna make u mine" did not fare as well, but is just as good nonetheless

Other standout tracks are "Is it Love"?, a duet with Freddie Jackson and the song "No more Lies". A truly talented singer who should definitely find a home on a label that believes in great singers. She should be heard and you should give her a listen!

5 out of 5 stars Greg Nice and Smooth B always on point.......2007-05-17

A fantastic album from the early 90's, good melodic beats, tight rhymes and an unmistakable flow.

3 out of 5 stars Coulda went smoother...........2007-04-24

I was very excited when i found this Lp at my local record store since ive always been curious since i heard them featured on Gangstarr's Lp's.
I always liked the way they flowed but they just didnt bring it like i thought they would.

They just didnt stamp the Lp with any memorable songs or Anthems. Now dont write me off as some commercial, Top 40 doushe, because that couldnt be farther from the truth.I just dont think they lived up to bar they set for themselves.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best Hip Hop Cd's of the 90's.......2007-01-22

The first time I heard Nice and Smooth's "Hip Hop Junkies" I was 13 and it was the hottest thing playing. A lot of people in mainstream America hadn't heard of Nice and Smooth. It wasn't like they were on MTV everyday (I don't recall ever seeing them in a video except for a song they did with Gang Starr a few years later). Anyway, "Hip Hop Junkies" is a terrific song, and when it came out the sounds were different from a lot of the other rap that people were listening to. At a time when most of the rap people were listening to in the street was gangsta-style rap, this song had a style that was pretty universal. The one thing about Nice and Smooth that I like is that they know how to come up with hooks. I see everybody here giving a lot of praise to a track called "Sometimes I Rhyme Slow" but that song didn't catch on in my neighborhood (Jamaica, Queens-where such rappers as LL Cool J, Onyx, and 50 Cent came from). One song that I like from this album that didn't get the same attention as "Hip Hop Junkies" but which was also popular and which everyone thought was one of the best track in this CD is "How To Flow."

5 out of 5 stars Short and Sweet.......2006-08-03

Though it is only 12 tracks, this is one of the best rap CDs I have ever heard. Both rappers have a great chemistry with each other on the mic, and the production is also great. You may have heard Sometimes I Rhyme Slow, and if you liked that song, then you will probably like the whole CD. Definately worth it for such a low price.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Hip Hop.......2006-08-03

This whold CD is great. The best song may be the single "Sometimes I Rhyme Slow", but all of the songs are great. I love this CD and if you buy it, I know you will love it also.

4 out of 5 stars Classic Hard Bop Live.......2006-09-24

The band on "Doin the Thing" is one of Horace Silver's best. At that time the music he was playing was closer to hard bop though there are some elements of soul that he would become more influenced by. As a live set, it is excellent, great sound quality especially with the remaster. The extra tracks are classic as well. The in between stage banter is dated but amusing and nostalgic and fits with the disc. Any fan of hard bop or soul jazz will want to pick this one up. Hard bop took away the somewhat sterile sound of bebop and made jazz populist again without selling. Anything from Horace Silver from the 60's is great. This is an especially good album though.

    Amazon.com essential recording

The history of black American music is a story of self-reinvention, and nobody but James Brown has started afresh as many times and as successfully as the Isley Brothers. It's Your Thing is the first time their entire 40-year career has been surveyed in one place, including 29 (!) chart hits. It spills over with innovation: rock & roll ("Twist and Shout"), tough R&B ("Shout"), rich Motown soul ("This Old Heart of Mine"), furious, hard funk (the original "Fight the Power"), and even the mellower lover-man crooning that occupies a lot of the third disc. They integrated guitar into their soul like few others, and not only on the tracks here featuring Jimi Hendrix--after brother Ernie comes into his own as a guitarist on disc two, he gives the Brothers' singles a distinctive, prickly edge. And the gospel singing traditions they inherited come out in their fraternal harmonies, in the very spiritual hope that powers their songs from the rawest to the sweetest. --Douglas Wolk

3 out of 5 stars Good Collection- of the original songs !!!.......2007-03-14

I recently purchased this CD, and while it is a good collection, there's a catch. The song that I bought it for, "Voyage to Atlantis" has been redone, and replaced with some in studio alternate version, that's not nearly as good as the original. there are 3 or 4 other songs like this too. I have no idea why the artists do this, unless they want to get the consumer soo frustrated that they eventually buy the original album.Other than this, its a good collection of their hits (except "Pop That Thing"), which should be on there.

2 out of 5 stars Who puts these things together?.......2005-08-07

Who in the world put this thing together. How can they put a box set together and miss so many hits and great album cuts. This reminds me of the Earth, Wind & Fire box set. The music is great, and I love these guys and their versatility, but this should have been 4 or 5 discs instead of 3 discs. I'm glad I've got most of the albums so that I won't miss so many good songs. It's very frustrating as a fan that we can't get every hit, isn't that why it is a box set and not a "greatest hits" package. The label probably does this so that you will buy the albums just to get the missing songs.

5 out of 5 stars part of my life's soundtrack.......2003-09-02

this is a must have for anyone born in 1948. so many memories.
it will bring smiles when you recall the dances and the clothes.
    a great collection!!!

5 out of 5 stars The Boys Are Back In Town!.......2002-11-18

With this 3 disc set, if you aren't old enough to remember the tunes from disc one, it will be disc two and three that will make the most of this collection. Even though they are missing quite a few songs, the remaining tune will take you over, especially if you are a die-hard Isley fan! Fair warning, at least three of their tunes are live studio recorded and may sound a little differently than you remembered, it will be very small compaired to what lies in store. From the kickin' to the groovin', here is a boxed set to cherish.

4 out of 5 stars Great compilation, but not quite the whole story.......2001-08-31

Not many groups that got their start in the 1950's have continued to have a successful recording career into the new millenium. The Isley Brothers are the exception to the rule. Entering their fifth decade of hitmaking, the groups track record proves that talent can truly transcend time. The 50 songs spread over three CD's cover the years 1959 to 1996. Career highlights such the Isley's first hit "Shout"(pts 1&2), "Twist And Shout", "This Old Heart Of Mine", "It's Your Thing", as well as 70's classics like "That Lady", "For The Love Of You", and "Fight The Power" are included. This set does have it's drawbacks however. Even with three discs there's a lot missing, particularly from the 70's and 80's period. Key singles and album tracks such as "Choosey Lover", "Livin' The Life"/"Go For Your Guns", "It's A Disco Night(Rock Don't Stop)", "Hurry Up And Wait", "Inside You", "I Wanna Be With You", "The Winner Takes All", aren't in this package. On top of that hits such as "Groove With You", "Voyage To Atlantis", and "Don't Say Goodnight(It's Time For Love)" are not the original album versions but alternate versions cut live in the studio in 1980. In my opinion it would have been better to make this collection a four disc set instead of three. On the positive side, the collection is well packaged with a silver foil slipcase, a nice booklet, and has been nicely remastered. Now that the Isley's classic 70's albums "The Heat Is On" and "Harvest For The World" have been remastered, hopefully the folks at Legacy will be doing the rest soon. Good box set, but not definitive.
