Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful music.......2004-06-07

This album was my introduction to the whole Chill music phenomenon. Since then, I have listened to quite a few Chill albums, ranging from jazz to world beat to the sounds found here, downtempo electronica. I have become quite enthusiastic about Chill...not a style of music so much as a mood that can be exemplified in a number of genres of music. The mood is relaxing, but with a gentle beat. Unlike New Age or ambient smooth relaxing music, most Chill is something you could dance to late at night when you're mellowed out, or early in the evening when you're just kind of warming up; or, you can just sit back in your recliner and drift off to music pleasureland.

Some albums pull off the Chill mood better than others. This is one of my favorites. I especially like tracks #5 through #9...this set of 5 songs is 5-star material and exquisite sequencing--sheer perfection in beautiful electronic sounds and a gentle beat that rocks you like a sensual lullaby.

While #5-#9 are the pinnacle of the album for me, tracks #4-#10 all fit together superbly. I don't like Moby's "In This World"--it just doesn't seem to fit on this album, so that's why I say the good sequence starts at #4. The first song seems to be a bit different too. While most of the album is more like evening music, Delerium's "Love" seems like sunny music to me. It's still smooth and beautiful, but the acoustic guitars and female vocals sound more like summer sun music to me, rather than the other songs' "evening" sounds.

I have three versions of "Tears From The Moon" by Conjure One. While this is my least favorite in itself, the mix on this album fits the album to a tee. After this song, the beautiful, smooth, rich electronics give way to a song with lowkey rapping, so the mood is lost. The lyrics in "North Pole" are offensive and thus do not contribute to the beauty found on the rest of the album. Fischerspooner's and New Order's songs sound like something straight out of 1982 (Depeche Mode or Yazoo of that era, for example); I like that kind of music and these songs have a gentle slow beat, but still, the 1982 sound doesn't mix well with the 2003 sounds. These are the reasons I say songs #4 to #10 are the prime sequence of this album and the other songs, well, just don't fit so well.

I picked up this album because of the artists I knew, Moby and New Order. Ironically, I dislike the song by Moby and think the New Order song doesn't fit. But I have been introduced to a new mode of music, Chill, which I am now quite crazy about, and among Chill albums I've heard, the middle of this album, particularly tracks 5 through 9, is quintessential Chill. So beautiful...

4 out of 5 stars Not quite the ultimate chill out but still good.......2003-04-13

I guess after hearing the fifth volume in the Buddha Bar series, my expectations of chill out compilations have been raised. I have been spoiled by the diversity of the well-knowned chill out series. So when I bought Nettwerk's "Chillout 2003: The Ultimate Chillout", I thought it could have been better and less predictable. As much as I love Moby and his song "In This World" and Sasha's "Wavy Gravy", I thought those two songs could have easily been left off this cd. On the other hand hearing a new song from "Delerium ("Love") and a remix of my favorite Conjure One song "Tears From the Moon" made it well worth buying the cd, which I found a used copy in the used bins at my favorite record store. The Delerium song "Love" was nothing I have ever heard before from my favorite ambient act. Faithless' Zoe Johnston lends her stunning vocals to the beautiful song. I also loved Kirsty Hawkshaw's "Fine Day [Frakker Mix]". I remember hearing samples of that song on an old Orbital song. Of course what is a Nettwerk compilation without a Sarah McLachlan track? To be honest, I actually enjoyed the William Orbit mix of "Black". I am nowhere tired of that song as I am with Delerium's "Silence". I wasn't too wild about the Telepopmusik or Fischerspooner tracks. Both groups I find vastly overrated. I loved Ihb's "Olivia Newton Christ" and FC Kahuna's "North Pole Transmission". Hooligan's "Hear Me Now" and New Order's "Your Silent Face". With all its imperfections, "Chillout 2003" is quite good but it isn't the ultimate chill out as the title say. I leave that title to my favorite chill out compilation "Buddha Bar V".

5 out of 5 stars Best Chillout CD of 2003.......2003-04-02

As the title states - this is the Ultimate Chillout CD. I love the way it starts out with Delerium - they are one of the best Chillout groups ever. Can't wait for a new CD by them. Chillout 2003 also does a nice job of mixing it up. The Conjure One track is perfect and even the older stuff like New Order fit in well.

5 out of 5 stars Best of the chillouts.......2006-09-12

Don't waste your money on other chillouts. This is THE ONE to get: Hayling, Destiny, Edge of the Ocean, Teardrop, Street Spirit, Swollen, and others that you may or may not like... All things considered, there is no better chillout album than this.

5 out of 5 stars 4.5 stars. Solid Chill Compilation, Much Better than 2001.......2004-09-20

4.5 Stars... This CD is very good, and much better than the below average 2001! I recommend the entire series, expept for the original 2001 (the 2001 isn't that good). 2002, 2003, '04, and '05 are outstanding. I own all the discs from 2001 thru 05. If they can keep this up, I'll look forward to purchasing another CD ASAP!

5 out of 5 stars Awesome........2003-11-19

This CD is awesome. I've had it for a year and a half now, and I still listen to it all the time.

4 out of 5 stars Ace for the casual electronic fan, or chillout beginners.......2002-11-05

Right, no surprises here, just a big ol' chunk of big names and some exclusive remixes by the chillout regulars currently cashing in. All calculated for maximum appeal, of course. Brit bird Dido has her brother offer up some strings and trip-hop with "Here With Me," and it's actually quite lovely, grandiose even - matched by Coldplay's "Trouble." FC Kahuna look beyond their electro-disco tastes for "Hayling," a beeping electronic waterfall backed by that GusGus gal Sia Furler. And whatta you know, Zero 7, Bent, and Delirium all show up again.

Now, too bad about whiny Radiohead, buy your moody pals probably like that stuff, and the Dusted mix of McLachlan's "Angel" just adds unnecessary beats. So how good is Chillout 2002? Pretty ace as a gift or for the casual electronic music fan, but dance aficionados should be aware the new remixes alone (barring "Intensify") don't warrant a cash layout if you have most the other tunes.

4 out of 5 stars Sexy !!!.......2002-08-24

This is the sultriest compilation I had ever owned, this is not to chill, exactly, this is to spend a special night with your loved one,I like the fact that most of the songs have a beggining and an ending and aren't seamed one to another, that makes it easier if you like to make your own compilations, also I like the alternative versions of many very common "chill" songs like "Teardrop".
The only reason I gave it only four stars is because I'm kinda tired of compilations that have "Here with me","Destiny" and "Swollen",don't get me wrong,I thing they are beautiful songs, but with all the music out there, one would think that they would stop including these songs in every compilation!!!.
All in all,a very enjoyable CD.

5 out of 5 stars Scooter Does It Again!.......2007-06-07

I just got this and I definately recommened it to anyone who likes Scooter. I have been a fan of Scooter since 94 and this latest CD just brings him up to a higher level.

I have to agree that Imaginary Battle is the best track although you will be listen to Behind the Cow a lot anyway since it has the KLF back ground to it. Once you get to Imaginary Battle, it will be very difficult to stop listening to it. I suggest just auto repeat so you don`t have to manually go back. They did a good job with Love Is An Ocean, anyone from 95 with the RBM track will be happy.

Scooter has done a good job with making good new tracks while giving respect to other good DJs. I just can not emphasize enough how good Imaginary Battle is however. Just make sure you are moving when you listen to it!!!

And again, the references to the cow are well done and entertaining.

5 out of 5 stars Can the 4th chapter of scooter deliver?.......2007-04-05

The answer so far is yes! This album is not their best but I would still say it is a 10 out of 10 on my rating scale. Favorite track is imaginary battle. The album is part different and part typical scooter.

4 out of 5 stars Scooter's latest.......2007-03-28

This cd compilation is a very good release for a band that has been around in the trance/techno scene for a while. Scooter keeps getting better with age, and every cd they release is a bit different from the last, so, there is always a good mix. I would say that any Scooter fan would NOT be disappointed with this cd. A MUST HAVE!!!

You always have to wonder when you buy a compilation set like this whether you're actually going to like all of the discs, or if you're going to get one good one and three duds. I was extremely pleased to discover that this entire 4-disc set is simply brilliant all the way through. I'd say my favorite track overall is number 6 from disc 1 called "Eternity"; the vocalist mixed into the track is phenomenal! For anyone looking to add some great house/trance to your collection, definitely give this one a try!

    4 out of 5 stars Ultimate Dance?.......2002-08-22

There are several items about this CD that I wish to praise: 1) It is chock-full of Dance Remixes that were previously unavailable to a Dance Deprived U.S. public. 2) The cover does not indicate that the mixes contained herein are not the played-out radio versions, but rather vastly superior club remixes; thus "tricking" unsuspecting tasteless masses into purchasing some very good music! 3) The track selection is pretty good, with two noteable exceptions... Missy's "Get Ur Freak On" and Busta's "Pass The Courvoisier" are two songs that are hopelessly worthless. Mary J. Blige's "No More Drama" and Janet's "All For You" are two of Thunderpuss' best remixes of late, Enrique Iglesias' "Escape" gets the royal treatment from His Dance Highness Giorgio Moroder, and Angie Stone and Deborah Cox have their songs kicked up a notch by remix god Hex Hector. Perhaps the most pleasant suprise is the stunningly beautiful Metro Remix of Luther Vandross' "I'd Rather." All in all, I'm pleased with my $$$ investment.

4 out of 5 stars Great for a Good Workout.......2002-07-30

This is a FUN CD. I love dance music but rarely get to go out to clubs. With this CD I can bring the club to my car, my gym, my house...you get the picture. While I wasn't crazy about all the mixes (Enrique Iglesias, Janet Jackson), the majority were very good to excellent. I even discovered some new songs! My faves: Mary J, Alicia Keys, Lamya, Andrea Brown.
I'm always looking for good dance compilations with good mixes of recognizable songs. This one delivers!

5 out of 5 stars This CD is Hot!.......2002-07-16

I love this CD -- every song is fun & oh so dance worthy! I highly recommend it. This CD is great because the people who made it took the best songs from 2001 & 2002 & added a funky dance vibe to each song.

1 out of 5 stars Ewww! This is a disaster!.......2002-07-01

Now that singles are virtually unavailable in the American market, labels are spewing out hits compilations at a speed that is absolutely startling. Some of these discs are better than others, but this one is amongst the worst offenders. I can close my eyes and imagine the focus group that came up with this album at their weekly meeting: "Let's round up some of the tackiest, most overplayed mainstream dance hits and cram them into an album. Sure, these songs have appeared on other compilations, but since we're marketing to 14-year-old suburban teens, they'll still lap this one up!" The biggest misfire is the housed-up "Get Ur Freak On" by Missy Elliot. Memo to DJs: you can't remix this single! This version here basically siphons the raw sexiness that made the original so appealing. Big mistake. Likewise with their version of Busta Rhymes. Elsewhere, we see countless other singles that we've heard a zillion times before: "Absolutely Not" by Deborah Cox, "All for You" by Janet Jackson, and we're treated to "One More Time" by Daft Punk. There's nothing wrong with these singles. In fact I love all of them. The problem is that this collection doesn't dig deep enough for gems that may have slipped past the radar screen. Instead, they shoot for the obvious. Fans who don't get out much and want a cheat-sheet to dance may be pleased with this. But the discriminating dance music lover won't help but cringe.

4 out of 5 stars Electronic dance classics........1998-06-13

I don't know how this compilation is offered here, but one that I purchased from the store included: Hypnotic State CD1, Hypnotic State CD2, and the free bonus CD which came out to be GIEZ, The Ambient Room. The first Cd included such big names as Orbital, FSOL, Transmutator, New Order, and Bypass Unit which delivered great electronic sounds. The second Cd is little bit worse than first. It includes such song as 808 State's Lopez(remixed by Propellerheads). I think that name of the third cd speaks for itself, ambient music. Overall, if you are into the electronic music, then you will like this compilation.

5 out of 5 stars Nice Intro to Gabber.......2005-02-14

This is a nice disc. Fast and hard. Get "Nightmares from Rotterdam" in addition to this, if you like it.

"Mind Ripper", "Natas Is Counting", and "Strength Of Unity" are probably my favorite tracks off this. "Slaves to the Rave" is a good one too, but I prefer the previously mentioned remix on "Nightmares from Rotterdam".

A note to those who read the previous reviewer:
    Gabber sounding like rock?
Not quite. Last time I checked, rock had nothing to do with pounding beats and heavy bass. Gabber is about the hardest and fastest techno you're going to find anywhere. Pounding bass, relentlessly fast beats. If that's not what you're looking for, stick with happycore or trance or something.

    5 out of 5 stars Flawless, without a doubt........2000-06-23

This compilation is viciously hard, pounding with bass, and overall, flawless in style. The beats are put down ominously by Santana....pounding through the floor and eating out the soul. Pay close attention to "Slaves of the rave," this song is one of the best on this compilation. There is another vicious remix of this same song on "Nightmares from Rotterdam," another gabber compilation which ranks up there with this compilation.

For those of you who enjoy the pounding, now quickly emerging hard German house/techno that is being spit out of Germany, then you love this compilation. Although a bit old, it is ahead of it's time and still makes it's cameos every so often at Sound Factory and Limelight saturdays.

Hard, Underground, and Unstoppable. You will love this without a doubt and above all, you will NOT be dissapointed.

    5 out of 5 stars HELL YEAH!.......2000-04-22

When I first got this CD, I knew nothing of Gabber, save that it was "...very angry techno... like gabber and hard-core techno that has, just, hellish beats that are just faster than any speed metal." This was true. The material on this CD is actually not Gabber in the truest sense of the word, however. This CD is much more rave and break-beat oriented than actual Gabber.

The DJ who compiled this work, Omar Santana, is the man who invented the style of music heard here, dubed "Hard-Hop" after it's hip-hop influences. Omar Santana actually originally wrote hip-hop, breakbeat, and trip-hop music before incorporating them all into the Hard-Hop sound.

This CD is actually a very good introduction to Gabber, and Hardcore in general. Not for the faint of heart, or impatient however. This CD left me craving more hardcore techno, speed, and just insanity in general. My only warning is that this CD alone is not enough! Get Nightmares From Rotterdam for some real Gabber once you've listened to this!

4 out of 5 stars 'Calling All Industrial Ravers,' this is for you........2000-03-01

A couple of years ago I was visiting family in New York when I went to the music store to get my daily `fix.' You see, I live in the middle of nowhere and it takes time for newer music to reach the music stores. I came across this CD quite by accident. I am a self-proclaimed music junkie and have been known to buy CD simply for the artwork.

I bought it and didn't expect it to be anything special. It completely blew me away. I own several hardcore-industrial CDs. This one is the hardest, fastest and loudest I have ever heard. The Bass alone is enough to shake down a brick wall. IT Rocks! I had never heard of any of the artists or the DJ before. From the first track I was hooked and listened to it straight through. I was amazed.

Some of the best tracks are #5) Omar Santana - Mind Ripper; this is a cross between industrial and thrash rock, #2) Trickster - White Line; this seems to be a new fusion of hard acid and trance, and #1) Archatos - Strength of Unity; a creepy, `George Orwell' inspired `Bass Cyclonosphere' style Gabber song.

Just a word of warning, this CD is not for the faint of heart. You should give a good listen before you buy it unless you already are a fan of the Gabber movement. This CD was engineered for teeth grinding, hardcore Techno heads. If that is you, give it a shot. :)

    5 out of 5 stars BEST HARDCORE.......1999-10-03

Now if you crave the rave and want a blood rush then get this cd. packed with tons of beat and base and energetic. this is the kind of hardcore every hardcore dj should make!
