About the Artist
Considered a modern music icon by many, DJ Rasoul (Guy Nado) has done much to put the San Francisco Bay Area on the map as the epicenter of the west coast house movement. Best known for his trademark heavy basslines and deep rich chord structures, his "Soul Searching" series on Large Music has reached classic status and influenced music lovers worldwide.

Originally from the Ivory Coast in West Africa, Rasoul moved to the States as a young boy in 1975. He dabbled in all sorts of music as a teenager but became hooked on house after pairing up with San Francisco's 3rd Floor Productions team in 1990. Throughout the early '90s, Rasoul released his own records and remixed for others under a variety of monikers including the Mad African, Dredman, and NW2. Soul Searching Vol 1. was released on Large Music in 1998 to widespread critical acclaim and followed by 3 more successful volumes. These releases set the format for what is now commonly known as the "West Coast House Sound." While not producing and running his own label, Soulfood Recordings, RaSoul travels the world as one of the most sought after house music DJs.

Yoakam was coming off a platinum debut album with a wiseass title (Guitars, Cadillacs, Etc. Etc.) when he released Hillbilly Deluxe. Neither as hard-nosed nor as bereft as he'd soon be sounding, Deluxe was nonetheless both a smart, stylized missive and the kind of nouveau honky-tonk set that country radio was suddenly ready to eat up. King of rockabilly.......2005-12-28

This is Dwight's sophomore release, and it sounds like he's been doing it for years! A great follow-up to "Guitars, Cadillacs....." This one has a little more "rockabilly" than his first album, but is often considered by many, to be his best work. I'll disagree with that and say "Tomorrow's Sound Today" and "This Time" were far better, but this one still deserves an A+. This album includes a cover of the great Stonewall Jackson's "Smoke Along the Tracks", as well as a cover of Lefty's "Always Late..."; both numbers are superb covers and Dwight does justice to both. Persoanlly, I say the best tracks are "1,000 Miles" and "This Drinkin' Will Kill Me". This is one any true country music fan must own. A+

Hillbilly Deluxe, Dwight Yoakam.......2005-07-20

Wonderful CD. I was so glad to find it. I have worn out a cassette of the same title and have been unable to find this anywhere. Some songs on here that are not on his other CD's. Thanks, Amazon!

Brilliant rocking country album.......2004-04-09

This was Dwight's second album (after Guitars Cadillacs). It contains seven original songs, all written by Dwight, and three covers. The overall feel of the album is upbeat, yet the lyrics are generally sadder than the rockabilly-styled musical backing would suggest. Most of the songs here are up-tempo or mid-tempo. The only ballads are Please please baby, Johnson's love and 1,000 miles. It occurs to me that 1,000 is a number that Dwight seems to find significant because he later recorded a song titled A thousand miles from nowhere as well as including the number in the title of one of his compilations.

The album yielded four major country hits - Little sister (a cover of the Elvis Presley classic from the early sixties), Always late with your kisses (a cover of a Lefty Frizzell country hit from the fifties), Please please baby (one of only two ballads on this album - the other being Johnson's love) and Little ways. The third cover here, Smoke along the track, is a train song that was originally recorded by Stonewall Jackson in the fifties.

This is, as I would expect, a high quality album from Dwight. By his own very high standards, it is not his strongest album but if you're serious about Dwight's music, this is essential. If you only want one or two of Dwight's albums, go for one or both of the compilations, Just lookin' for a hit and Last chance for 1,000 years.

Only a slight letdown from first album........2003-07-23

There's just no getting around it (for me anyway): this album simply does not have the electricity of *Guitars, Cadillacs, etc.*, the overall range of *If There Was a Way*, or the depth of the great *This Time*. Having said that, what's here is still very good and certainly worth having in your collection.

Both "Little Ways" and "Smoke along the Track" are good but are pretty much standard country fare. The same is true of "Always Late with Your Kisses", "Throughout All Time", and "This Drinkin' Will Kill Me". They're all good songs but there's nothing extra special about them. However, the remake of the Elvis standard "Little Sister" is reminiscent of the remake of Johnny Cash's "Ring of Fire" from the first album. Both recall the old adage that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

The real strengths of the album lie in "Johnson's Love", a great ballad, "Please, Please Baby", an electric country-rocker, "Readin', Rightin', Rt. 23", and the best of the bunch, "1,000 Miles", not to be confused with "A Thousand Miles from Nowhere" from the *This Time* album. Enjoy.

Classic Dwight.......2003-02-20

This album is a sure favorite of mine, although not as great as Guitars, Cadillacs, etc. this album is exceptional. My favorite tracks are obvious favorites like Little Ways ,Please, Please Baby , Little Sister and Readin' ..RT23. 1000 miles is the most forlorn and longing song in existence, telling a tale of a busted marriage and reflecting on the loss. This is an awesome album, worth many many listens. I highly suggest this album, it is among Dwights top 3 albums.

first meeting.......2001-11-15

this was the first really exposure that i had with him and his touch on the saxophone with most all of the songs that were among my favorites. his touch,beat and arrangement were all suberb and turned me solidly into one of his fans.
I had heard some of his tunes on the radio and knew of him but had never really listened to his talent and touch.
Thus now I'm going to be on the look out for more of his music as I can sit back and relax to his playing the top tunes of yesterday.

missing one song...........2007-01-09

and Norman, there is plenty of room on this CD for Gear Jammer and the Hobo... the 23 track cd is 72-73 minutes long, Gear Jammer and the Hobo is 4 or 5 minutes long, and I have seen commercially released CD's that are 79 and one half minutes long! so there is absolutely no reason they could not have put the entire original album on the CD!

The reason the CD has 23 instead of 24 is a CD only holds 700 MB of information. If you put all 24 songs it runs just over the 700 MB threshhold. Unfortunate as that is, because I love "The Gear Jammer and the Hobo". However you can find that song on the 2 CD collection called "Legends of Road Music" , the record label is "King". That collection has all the songs from Road Music and then some.

Now onto the music. I found this on tape in the early 90's when I was still a truck driver. I wore the tape out because I listened to it so much. Without a doubt it is my favorite country album ever made. For lack of a better word it is nostalgic. I am in my early 30's so the times that these tracks were laid down were well before I was born, yet they paint pictures of time when the world was a lot slower and family was the heart of America.

When I listen I get the yearning for a slower pace. It makes me want to fire up my old CB and give a break one nine call.

My 1 year old daughter loves this album as well. She gets the biggest kick out of the old sound and wiggles and jiggles her [...] with every song.

This is some of the best music and rarely heard music one could hear in a life time.

Road Music.......2002-06-15

First of all the record was first released in 1978, also there are 24 tracks on the original album, I know this as I am sitting here looking at the cover of the album. The song your missing is The Gearjammer and the Hobo by Red Sovine with/Archie Campbell.
Other than that I can find no flaws in the listing that you have provided except for the lack of a picture of the album cover.
The music on this version of Road Music is great. I listened to this album (vinyl) when I was about 16 years old, and it does bring back a lot of good memories. Every now and then I pull out the record and listen to it. I was hoping to find it on CD.

Good Music.......2002-04-14

I first heard this on an album way back when I was hardly old enough to know what a record was. I think it was about 1978. I have been wanting so bad to find it on a compact disk. I figured that it was out of print. It is nice to know that it is still in print. I have grown up around 18 wheelers most of my life and my mom used to drive a log truck for the company. So many of the songs remind me of the things I saw in the passenger set of that R model Mack. Which is one of the reasons I hate Troopers and Dot of the roads. If you have drove a truck you know what I am talking about. These songs are just the best. I am sure you will agree.

These Legendary Ladies Still Sing Great!!.......2002-03-11

Four Grand Ole Opry "divas" together in one package!! Although recorded long after the apex of their careers as 1960s/70s hit makers, they sound as great as ever. I was a little dissappointed that they didn't pitch in and sing background vocals for each other's tracks but the productions are first-rate. (I also find the billing on the CD a bit curious because it's neither alphabetical or in ranking order of who had the biggest careers). Jean Shepard, by far the "countriest" of the four stars (she yodels on two of her four tracks), sings three of her biggest hits (including the classics "A Satisfied Mind" and "Slippin' Away") and a song called "Chime Bells", which features considerable yodeling. Shepard buffs will love that track but others might feel a more conventional country song would have fit in this collection better. Jeannie Seely sings four of her hits including Grammy winner "Don't Touch Me" and her 'comeback' hit "Can I Sleep in Your Arms". All four Seely tracks are bluesy-flavored ballad country; I would have liked to have heard one of her uptempo performances on this disc or at least a hit with a different style, such as "Lucky Ladies". Skeeter Davis sings four of her hits including one of country's most legendary songs, "The End of the World"; her voice seems astonishingly young here and she was well into her 60's!!! Jan Howard, one of the finest singers ever, sings three hits and a new song, "Memories for Sale" that I didn't care for that much. I would have loved to have her one of her classics from the past like "Love is Like a Spinning Wheel" instead. These small criticisms aside, these four ladies remain in extraordinarily fine voice and it's nice to see some women stars from country music's past get a bit of acknowledgement and not just Kitty, Patsy, Loretta, and Tammy.

I have the cassette of this. But the cassette is gone bad, so as soon as amazon.com gets the cd I will surely be purchasing it. George Jones does a wonderful job with these gospel songs. I love all the songs on it. Everyone ought to have this in their cd collection!

very disappointing and a complete bomb.......2002-06-18

These tracks are old, old, old. It sounds like they were recorded in somebody's basement. On one track George sounds like he's been inhaling helium. Definately not worth the price [...].

Heart warming Gospel greats.......2002-01-09

This CD of Goerge Jones 20 GOSPEL GREATS has been very inspiring to millions over the world, infact all the songs made it big time in the gospel world.George has bless the hearts of many with this album and he will continue to do so to all his fans and to those who has yet to hear these heart warming gospel greats. This is why i need this CD in my collection.

The King of Country Gospel.......2002-01-09

The golden voice of George Jones over the years has still sounded the same. The unique style in which he sings has out class all other country gospel artist. George has been blessed with a golden voice and talent by the Lord and probably He should just continue in this direction.

Musicor starved fans get in line!.......2001-07-16

Can't get enough of George's Musicor works? This is the place to go with 18 of these cuts being from his Musicor years (two cuts are from his Mercury years-"Boat of Life" & "Will The Circle Be Unbroken").

Next to Hank Williams, Sr., George Jones was possibly the greatest country gospel singer of all time and these sides prove it. Most songs on here are traditional style such as "I'll Fly Away" & "Where We'll Never Grow Old". George takes these tunes to a new light in his pre-countrypolitan style and gives them a new life all their own.

Much of this has been around before-no rarities here. A good bit of was drawn from his mid-60's Musicor gospel LP's, but some of this seems to be making it onto CD for the first time. A must have.
