As peopled by John Cusack and Kate Beckinsale, director Peter Chelsom's romantic fable mines a familiar vein: What if a pair of attractive protagonists engaged to others suddenly found themselves madly in love? If the premise is as vintage Hollywood as popcorn and sticky theater floors, its soundtrack is smartly contemporary, a collection of new songs (by Evan & Jaron, Shawn Colvin, Wood, Heather Nova, John Mayer, and Chantal Kreviazuk) and well-selected album cuts (by Annie Lennox, Nick Drake, Bap Kennedy, David Gray) filled out with a loopy slice of vintage Louis Armstrong ("Cool Yule") and jazzy solo piano score excerpt by film composer Alan Silvestri. The tone shifts warmly amid jangly alterna-pop, folk-tinged, and quieter, more jazz/blues flavored cuts. It's tasteful, sensual stuff--and largely devoid of the cloying bathos of similar Hollywood romantic fare. -Jerry McCulley

Love it.......2007-03-17
I really like this CD. In fact, "when you know" was the first dance at my wedding!
Im in a time trance through the whole cd.......2006-02-13
This is a must cd!!!! If you were captured by the movie... treat yourself to this.. The music is just as enchanting as the movie
Really good. Beautiful music to a beautiful movie @}->---.......2006-01-26
I know this is an older cd now, but I came across it again when I was cleaning out my cupboard. It's from one of my favourite movies ever. It's got some excellent songs on it, but I dropped a star from the ratings because it's missing a piece or two (especially the music where Jonathan is reading his obiturary). But I was so estatic that it had the beautiful song by Annie Lennox called Waiting in Vain. That had me hooked when I first saw the movie at the theatre. Also the next best song is when Jonathan was finally given the book he'd been looking for for so long by his fiance. It's called When You Know by Shawn Colvin. This cd is a little eclectic and it has something for everyone. You should listen to this cd; you'll love it.
Serendipity. Love it!.......2005-10-06
I got this soundtrack as a Christmas present. I watched this movie many times and I found out that beside the movie and the scenario (my dream town: New York and my fav time of the year: Christmas) I really like the music, too.
Starting with "Never A Day" which is really nice song, and "Moonlight Kiss" which is one of my fav on this cd; this song is so romantic, so nice balad with such great lyrics. "January Rain" is only music but it is from David Gray and you know that it can't be bad. "Waiting In Vain" by Annie Lennok is cover of Bob Marley song, I think. But I like Annie's version more. Really romantic song. "The Distance" and "Like Lovers Do" and beautiful "When You Know" by Shawn Colvin are also very nice songs... and also very romantic.
My fav song is "Northern Sky" by Nick Drake (find his albums; great singer). It is such a winter, snowy song!!! Love it.
And then Christmas song - Cool Yule by L.Armstrong which is perfect for opening and closing the movie.
And the last three songs, "This Year" and "Always Something...", "83" are a little bit up tempo songs, a little bit rocky but also good.
The last song "Fast Forward" is instrumental... but really beautiful.. I remember the scene when Jonathan loses Sara and he is driving in a subway...
A really good soundtrack to an outstanding movie!!! Serendipity. Do You belive in it? Why not.
Great, but lacking...........2005-03-19
The Soundtrack is good, but cues are missing....Alan Silvestri's score is woefully underepresented on this album, as well as a missing song that underscores an important scene- the plane flight! I have no idea what the song is named, but accompanied by drums the singer states "...I wanna get together....I wanna get together..." I have no idea who the singer or the song is. Now I'll have to do some detective work. I would have been better to have it on the album than have included songs that aren't heard in the film.

Chantal Chamberland - Wonderful in every way!.......2006-10-06
I heard Serendipity Street while browsing a music store in Atlanta, GA. I am not a very impulsive buyer of music, but I couldn't leave her voice behind. Her rendition of all the songs on this disc are unique and resonate long after she has finished singing. I am so glad that this Quebec treasure has found its way South. Eventually, I left the store with two copies -- one for me and one for friends.
will leave you in awe........2004-12-01
This is truly a gem. I was lucky enough to stumble upon this cd at Open Door Music in Saugatuck, MI (great music store by the way - say Hi to Ron) where Chantal was playing. There are some remakes (Crazy by Patsy, At Last by Etta James, etc...), and some of her own (wow!) - and each and every one leaves you wanting more - I found myself waiting on a breath to see what comes next - and it just gets better with each track. She's kinda of Norah - kinda Eva - but every bit original Chantal! Can't wait for the next one.
what an unexpected, delightful find in the road.......2004-10-09
chantal chamberland is the next great thing. she is from quebec province and lives in the burlington/hamilton, ontario area and has stuck pretty close to home, playing the blues and jazz clubs (1505 club) around hamilton and only rarely venturing to toronto.
at last, because chantal's albums (this is our time and serendipity street) are so good, her talent could not forever be denied and she is getting some play in the usa and sang at the montreal jazz festival in july, 2004 and brought down the (outdoor) house. i had a chance to see her perform in a small venue --where she is at her best -- in saugatuck, michigan this past august.
chantal has a bluesy, husky voice, a la eva cassidy or even janis joplin at times, but not as raw, and her song selection is a mix of her own compositions -- (it's you, the first cut on serendipity street, is one of hers, and is great, as are old standards fever and why don't you do right, on this is our time) -- and classics, billie holiday, ella fitzgerald, edith piaf and lena horne (cry me a river).
chantal sings in flawless and beautifully accented english and french and plays a mean guitar in her own accompaniment. she also has some great jazz trio back-up, particularly on serendipity street. she is somewhat shy and self-deprecating, with an easy stage manner, and warms to the audience in person; some of this comes through in her recordings.
the best song and my favorite on this is our time is la vie en rose; chantal sings it slowly and plaintively. several of the songs are her own compositions, some good, some so-so; this was her first "big" album. she did a small (four song) album entitled chantal five years ago and she no doubt wanted to demonstrate her creativity.
all of the songs on serendipity street are great, classic choices particularly since i fell for you and the last one -- fittingly -- at last. chantal gives them both a belting out blues and jazz delivery and shows her versatility and ability to shift gears effortlessly from one style to another.
i bugged amazon to get chantal chamberland's two cds several months ago and for a while they had them, but now they are unavailable. if you can find them, buy them both. if you can find the old one with four songs, buy that one too. if you get the two new ones, though, you will be getting in on the ground floor of the next great north american female folk/blues/jazz vocalist -- vive la chantal.

Nearly every big-band leader (and composer) has had to grapple with the splotching effect that amassed instruments can have. Duke Ellington avoided the problem most often by creating a constant dialogue between his orchestra's different sections. Bob Florence subscribes to the Ellingtonian goal, if not the exact process. Florence's Limited Edition exacts every driving, energized particle from the air as they play, amplifying every single instrument's ability to stand out, even while part of a section riffing against another section--or several sections at once. Serendipity 18 is a mesmerizing display, lit from the opening with big solos that charge ahead and inspire the band to rise up, throwing off peals of brass. Florence's piano is a strong voice, especially on the balladic opening to "Tres Palabras" and virtually all over the more uptempo, large-scale swingers, of which there are many. Florence's is theatrical, ambitious, highly successful music played by a fantastically powerful band--one of the best in the U.S. --Andrew Bartlett
Album Description
Florence's eleventh album as leader, which won him a Grammy Award, may be his most adventurous work to date!
Customer Reviews:
What about the old Bob Florence?.......2003-01-17
The new Bob Florence is much too frantic for me. I have an old LP called Pet Project that Bob did back in the 70's (?) that is one of the finest albums I have ever heard. It was a take off on tunes that Petula Clark made famous like Downtown and I Know A Place. It is some of the finest writing and musicianship. Doesn't sound as much like big band as it does orchestra band or whatever. Clean, pure, liquid, fun. Never get tired of hearing it. Wish I could find it on CD. The front line is playing every instrument in the book from contra bass clarinet to piccolo. The ensemble sound is truly amazing with no grating soloists trying to hog the scene. Other bands that gave a similar sound and were actually just as good were Billy May's band and the Sauter-Finegan Band. Oh, well, you can't bring back front row sax sections like that anymore. They were too versitile, just like the comedian/singer/dancers of the past like Red Skelton, Gene Kelly, Fred Astaire, Steve Allen. What happened to their likes, anyway?
OK Stuff, But Just OK.......2002-04-30
Bob Florence is an eminently listenable composer and arranger, and on all of the discs of his that I own he produces at least one show stopper. My admiration and respect for his talent notwithstanding, however, I can't say that I've ever listened to any of his work without grabbing the remote to move to the next track fairly quickly. There is a good deal of excitement in his stuff, but that derives more from energy and drive than it does from inventiveness and sensitivity. The logical comparison is to one of his friends, Bill Holman, to whom he dedicated the song "Willis" on his "Earth" album. I liked the title cut, "Sugar," and "Evelyn," but there is not the same sort of interplay of well-textured layers of sound that one feels in the work of Bill Holman, who manages to sustain my interest in the most diverse of his choices.
Don't take my carping too much to heart--he is enjoyable, and I might be too sensitive to what he doesn't do instead of listening for what he does do, which is respectable and noteworthy. If you want to get to know this fellow, "Earth" and "With All the Bells and Whistles" are better places to start.
Deserves more than five stars..........2001-05-05
Bob Florence and his AMAZING big band deserve every inch of that Grammy this CD won. In my book, there are not enough stars to rate this one; every track is the bomb!!!
If this CD is not in your library, it should be.
The Greatest Big Band Composer Alive Today!!!!.......2000-09-27
This album and Bob Florence's previous album "Earth" are two of the greatest Big Band albums of the nineties. This man is the same league as Ellington, Kenton and Basie. The Limited Edition Band is one of the best I have ever heard. They play with passion and a discipline that is simply marvelous. Listen to Stanley Turrentine's compostion "Sugar", especially the way the brass and the reeds play off against one another. "Bimbosity" is pure genius, both in the playing and in composition. This piece would make Benny Goodman dance--there is one musical surprise after another in this composition. You cannot overlook the piano playing of Florence, it is not sparse nor is it overblown. It fits perfectly within each composition. Every serious Big Band enthusiast must have this album in his/her music collection!! You will find yourself searching the internet for other Bob Florence recordings after listening to this one. I give this 10 stars!!!
A master of sonorities.......1999-09-10
Bob Florence's new music and arrangements for this album beautifully celebrate the excellent musicians in his band. It's amazing how he handles so many instruments playing at once without producing a big-band-smear sound; instead, the extremely active counterpoint of the various parts continually surprises the listener, and the result is very exciting, brightly-colored music. The title track is especially compelling.

Customer Reviews:
Sorry but..........2004-05-31
Although a long time PFM fan, who has ''adapted'' to the various styles of PFM during more than 3 decades, SREENDIPITY just not appears to be my cup of tea at all. I have tried and tried over and over again, but this album rarely goes on my CD player anymore. A couple of tracks that I like, and that's about it. These guys have used us to much better stuff than this relatively uninspired, pop, heavy and predictable album. Not up to what these guys are capable of doing.
At the time that I'm writing this review, PFM is still working on a new studio album to be released in October of 2004.Rumor has it (coming from people close to the band) that it should be a great (and more on the progressive side) one this time.
PFM continues to make good music.......2002-02-26
This is a thoroughly listenable and enjoyable 2000 album by PFM, with well-written songs, at least half a dozen of which are so catchy I can't get them out of my head. PFM fans and prog-rock fans should enjoy it, though the songs don't take the twists and turns of 70s PFM. This album sounds much more up-to-date than the 1997 comeback album "Ulisse", with electronic noises and beats as ear candy. "La Rivoluzione" sounds like Wetton-era King Crimson, and the single "K.N.A." has a rhythm and Eastern flourishes reminiscent of the Beatles' "Tomorrow Never Knows". "L'Immenso Campo Insensato" is gradually becoming my favorite song on the album, a ballad with a pulsing chorus and impassioned singing by Franz Di Cioccio. "Sono un Dio" has a driving beat and begins with a Mike Rutherford-style guitar riff. Some of the other songs, such as "Nuvole Nere", wouldn't sound out of place on Yes' "90125" album. And "Automaticamente" is a first: dance-club PFM! The album was produced by guitarist Corrado Rustici, who plays on "Exit", a short instrumental coda to "Sono un Dio", which closes the album. Keyboardist Premoli is relegated to the back of the mix on most songs, perhaps because a guitarist was the producer. Four songs include a string quartet to good effect, especially on "K.N.A.", where real strings alternate with Mellotron. This is a song-oriented, not jam-oriented, PFM. There are no long instrumental sections or extended soloing, except for "Exit", and even that's only a couple of minutes long. All lyrics are in Italian, except a strange "I dig you, you're so groovy, baby" bridge on "Domo Dozo" (I hope they don't think this is still hip American slang).
Good Friends.......2001-12-14
I had the honor to work with them in the "Serendipity" tour. Every show was terrific! Great musicians, great friends. I'm not tired to listen to these songs, even after an one-year tour. Ciao ragazzi!
Terrific!.......2001-08-03
Great music, great lyrics. This isn't an "old album", if u listen this one, you'll find the "art of music". Four great musicians who collaborated whit different lyrics-writer (texts of the songs are simply wonderful). The best of this "new PFM era". Enjoy it!
A great collection of new songs.......2000-11-14
With excellent results the guys of PFM (and the great help of producer Corrado Rustici) have built a new set of songs completely immersed in the 2k year. Add the well-known rhythm engine (Djvas/DiCioccio), add really beautiful lyrics composed with some of the best Italian songwriters of these times, add some very progressive progressions.... and you have a picture of this brand new work. In a sense is a pity for you guys out there who do not understand Italian, but the _poetic quality_ of the lyrics is so high!

A great collection of their music on a CD!!.......2005-04-20
I grew up with this music... and my 2 year old daughter loves it every bit as much as I do. It's actually the kind of music that appeals to all ages.
The arrangements, the harmonies, the blending of 9 voices and 7 instruments... it's a must have!
Uplifting sounds in an often underrated form of music.......2000-01-13
There is no way to adequately describe the marvelous sound of The Serendipity Singers in writing. Their music must be heard (more accurately experienced) to be understood. The group combines the traditional sound of American Folk with the more uptempo beat of early 1960's pop to create a musical style that is their's alone. The selections on this album include powerful ballads like "Sailing Away", the almost frightening lyrical imagery of "Sinner Man", the fanciful comic ditty "Mud", and their biggest commercial success, "Don't Let the Rain Come Down."
There are too many good songs in this collection to mention them all, and these comments cannot do them justice. If you love the sound of intricate harmonies and powerful voices losing themselves in the pure joy of singing, this album is for you. Indeed, The Serendipity Singers have Many Sides, and you'll enjoy exploring every one of them!

Customer Reviews:
really nice Jazz.......2005-08-20
Mike Garson is an extremely skilled Jazz pianist, amoung other things. his work with Bowie has always demonstrated not only skill but a sort of eccentric cleverness and strong sense of what works, as well as a vast musical experience. his solo work, being more of a "pure" jazz, is even more amazing! this cd was recorded back in the 80's and doesnt have the clearest quality ive ever heard, and it has to be turned up louder than modern cd's to hear it as well, but it is not a bad recording by any means. The performances are out of this world. a coulple of the sax parts are a little too "am radio" for me...but overall this is great stuff. some wonderful playing by all the musicians on this one. the bass does some really interesting things on a few tracks. of course, its Garson's wonderful piano tones that really sparkle!
Must have for jazz lovers and audiophiles.......1999-03-22
I had heard only two or tree bars in the CD shop and have made decision. After listening at my home I realise that it is even better than I thought.
It is one of my favourites all these years because the music is great and the sound is excelent.

Impressive!!!!.......2006-04-27
I guess Gregory Tardy has been out for a while I'm just now hearing of this kid(MY DOWN BEAT subscription ran out years ago)
This is an impressive first effort I read a few artilces on him and he has definitely paid some dues and it shows in his playing.Being under the tutelage of the Marsalis has definitely paid off.
Impressive Debut for New Tenor.......1998-10-01
Gregory Tardy has put together quite an impressive debut. The tenor saxophonist proves himself to be more more than capable of leading this date. His gig as a sideman with trumpeter Tom Harrell has had a noticeable impact on Tardy's writing. That's a good thing, as Harrell is one of the premier composers in jazz today. This is most apparent on the first two tracks "Forgiveness" and "Blues to Professor Pickens." Tardy wrote seven of the nine tracks here and there isn't a clinker in the bunch. The support throughout is stellar with fine performances from bassist Reginald Veal, drummer Eric Harland and the not-heard-enough pianist Mulgrew Miller. The piano tenor duet "Prisoner of Love" is one of the CD's highlights. Tardy's playing is very mature, running the gamut from muscular to temperate. I'm looking forward to his sophomore release.
