About the Artist
BILL LASWELL has more than 20 years experience as a touring musician and composer, and nearly 300 albums to his credit as a bassist and producer. He has collaborated with some of the most illustrious names in music across all genres and boundaries, including Zakir Hussain, Herbie Hancock, Mick Jagger, Laurie Anderson, Pharoah Sanders, Yoko Ono, Tony Williams, Iggy Pop, Brian Eno, Peter Gabriel, The Last Poets, Buddy Miles, George Clinton, Bootsy Collins, Afrika Bambaataa, Public Image Ltd., and countless others. He has also organized and produced recordings with master musicians from around the world, having logged extensive travel in Morocco and West Africa, India, Japan, Cuba, Australia, Brazil, and numerous other locations throughout Asia, Africa and South America.

An integral fixture on New York’s downtown "no wave" scene in the late 70’s and early 80’s, Laswell has since spawned a cult following among punks, ravers, avant garde jazz fans and funk and hip-hop heards for his legendary stage shows as a member of progressive groups like Material, Third Rail (with James Blood Ulmer and Bernie Worrell), Painkiller (with John Zorn and Mick Harris), Praxis (with Buckethead, Brain and DJ Disk) and for impromptu live collaborations with Zorn, Fred Frith, Graham Haynes, Nicky Skopelitis and many more.

The idea of Black Sabbath without Ozzy Osbourne was a form of metal sacrilege in 1980, at least until people heard Ronnie James Dio belt out "Oh no, here it comes again..." to open the reformed band's Heaven and Hell. Dio's low-growl had a yowl, squaring frightfully with Tony Iommi's more reined-in crunch. And Sabbath was reborn, playing faster than they had with Ozzy and drawing crowds. Five tracks from Heaven make it to this set, where four from successor, Mob Rules, show up. The winners from each: "Neon Nights" and "Turn Up the Night," both quick, hefty wailers, steamrolling on sheer riffing tonnage. Dehumanizer rekindled the Sabbath/Dio marriage in 1992, showing speed metal's intervening influence--and the band holds up well, racing atop Vinnie Appice's iron-armed drums and Iommi's relentless, intentionally range-limited riffs. Then there are the three new tracks, all benefiting from 2006's richer low-end production and metal's return to a slower grind--where Iommi is more thrilling doling out sludge, as on "Shadow of the Wind," where chords sound slo-mo and blessedly narrow in range. Yes, "Ear on the Wall" closes the set in a hurried, fast- (not speed-) metal vibe, but at best the band is deliberately mid-tempo, making a raucous noise you're happy for after all these years. --Andrew Bartlett

"The Dio Years" was released this past (April) to promote the up-coming reunion with Dio and the other members of Black Sabbath, who are simply calling themselves "Heaven & Hell" these days. Well, since I don't own
this CD, I can't really tell you about it that much, but I do have most
of the tracks on this set minus the three new ones.

Here is a list of tracks which should've been included, but were excluded
due to time constraints, and the fact that this sampling of the Dio era
of Sabbath is presented on only a single disc:

I don't think I'm gonna get this one, even if I can find it used.
However, I own the Re-mastered Editions of the three Sabbath/Dio albums
from the 1980's, as well as DEHUMANIZER (1992). ... And I'm
waiting for the new Live album "Live from Radio City Music Hall" by
the Heaven & Hell Project (Iommi + Dio + Butler + Appice), which will hit the shelves on August 28th, 2007.

It's about time.......2007-07-26

To me Ozzy era Sabbath was the greatest band EVER ! Dio era Sabbath was (and currently as Heaven And Hell) is an awesome band . This compilation is great "greatest hits" of the Dio years. The Dio Sabbath albums were all very good . Heaven and Hell , Mob Rules and the very under rated Dehumanizer are all first rate classic metal . This Rhino cd , "The Dio Years" does a great job of representing those 3 albums . The only bad choice of songs on this cd (in my opinion) is the Live Evil version of Children Of The Sea. I think they should have put the studio version on here instead. There was no need to represent Live Evil , yes it was a decent album , but the studio version is much much stronger. The 3 new songs are all classic Dio era Sabbath songs . Get this cd !

New Dio-Sabbath songs.......2007-07-25

Basically this is very good selection from the four Dio sung Sabbath albums, however, some of my favorites are missing. But the major advantage is the three new songs, which are just fabulous. Classic Sabbath tones, dark, mystical but also feels like the last Dio album called Dehumanizer.

If you like the classic Sabbath with Dio then this is a no brainer to purchase. You get the remastered classics plus 3 new songs. I would have paid the 10.99 just for the new songs. They are very good. I wish Sign of the Southern Cross and Country Girl had been included on the CD.

The "Greatest" From Black Sabbath.......2007-07-18

The "Dio Years" is the essential hits album from Black Sabbath. I have always liked Dio/Sabbath over Ozzy/Sabbath and this disc backs my point. The tracks picked from their respective albums are the best and the three new tracks are real solid. The three new tracks are better than the new tracks that were released on Sabbath's "Reunion" disc a few years back. All in all, this is what would be expected from the "Dio Years".

After kicking vocalist Ozzy Osbourne out of the band in 1978, Black Sabbath knew they would have to strike back with a powerful record if they were to retain their credibility. They recruited Elf vocalist Ronnie James Dio, whose melodramatic vibrato shuddered with menace, and in 1980, they released Heaven and Hell, their most potent offering since Master of Reality. Faster and more theatrical than Sabbath's earlier oeuvre, Heaven and Hell features the dynamic seven-minute title track, which builds from a lazy throb to a high-octane roar, and the dynamic "Die Young," which segues from an uptempo saunter to a flamboyant midsection strangely reminiscent of Queen. Best lyrics ever written???.......2007-07-24

Ozzy's gone, replaced by Ronnie James Dio from Rainbow, resulting in an ambitious theme with some of the very best song lyrics in tmy extensive Rock collection, with music to match.

Underappreciated by a market that was hoping for more of the same, maybe they should have changed their name? You know, people feel very stongly about religion, even if it's apathy, so this was about as much risk-taking as any group will EVER take.

Obviously, I think it worked out - it's nearly 30 years later and I'm still quite taken with the lyrics. At least try "Children of the Sea", where the symbol-laden lyrics aren't merely the best in my entire collection, but may be deemed of historical significance in future religious history. It's not merely an important album, but great Rock! The finest piece of art I'll ever own.

Black Sabbath Inspired........2007-05-23

Tony Iommi plays great on this album. It was the last album before he changed his tone & style to now using a wah wah on every solo... to bad.
Drummer Bill Ward finally has a big bass drum sound & Geezer Butler plays bass excellent as always.
Thanks to Martin Birch for his excellent production in capturing this inspired band. Ronnie James Dio sings excellent as well.

This album is pure genius, and, despite its age (it's now 27 years old!) it hasn't dated at all, which is unusual for a heavy rock album. If the album was released today, it couldn't sound any fresher.

The introduction of RJ Dio took 'the worst band in the world' and made them tight, with actually 'catchy' songs that people could listen to, something Osbourne has yet to accomplish.

This album would be included in any 'Top 100 Albums of All Time' if it were done by Deep Purple, Queen, or Led Zeppelin. The fact that it's not means that it never will. This is a shame.

The best of the rest....4.5 stars .......2007-05-17

I usually don't bother with post-Ozzy Sabbath, but when the fans stopped giving Dio the finger long enough to listen to this in 1980, they realized they had a masterpeice on their hands. Unlike it's successor, the overblown "Mob Rules", Heaven and Hell still had a good amount of '70's hard rock style to keep it out of the '80's excess department. That's not to say the songs are just average. Indeed, these are classics in their own right and go down with the best Ozzy and company had to offer in the '70's. Dio is in top form, and provided a fresh new sound for the rest of the band to use as a springboard to launch these new songs. Later releases would build on and recycle "Heaven and Hell", but ultimately Sabbath would never be this good again.

Black Sabbath is reborn; 4.5 stars.......2007-05-12

This could easily have been the last gasp for Black Sabbath. Following the artistic and commercial failure of their previous two releases (both of which were abysmal) and the ousting of Ozzy Osbourne (the group's most identifiable member from a media perspective) it seemed that Sabbath was on the skids with no way out. Ronnie James Dio was chosen as Osbourne's successor, having recently parted company with Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow. The little man with the big voice almost single-handedly pulled Sabbath's career out of the gutter, and in 1980 the mighty Sabs released Heaven And Hell, one of the all-time heavy metal classics.

Anybody who expects this to sound like early Sabbath classics like Paranoid or Masters Of Reality might as well not spend their money. Certainly there are echoes of early Sabbath here, but the addition of RJD to the songwriting team gave the band a much-overdue makeover. There tend to be more up-tempo tunes on a Dio-era Sabbath album, and Dio's sword-and-sorcery lyrical approach is quite a change as well. Another major difference is that while Osbourne would usually follow Tony Iommi's guitar riffs and call them vocal melodies Dio prefers to sing a melody that counterpoints the riff rather than doubling it. The fresh approach seems to rejuvenate the band and Geezer butler (bass), Bill Ward (drums), and Tony Iommi (guitars) deliver performances that are head and shoulders above the tired-sounding musicmanship on the previous two releases. Dio also seems to take inspiration from his new compatriots, singing with an edginess that was never quite there in Rainbow and would be his trademark sound for years to come. Rainbow's old producer Martin Birch was called in to oversee the process, resulting in a crisp, vital sounding recording.

Many of the songs here are timeless classics that are still regular features of Dio's concert performances and were for Sabbath as well until the ill-advised reunion with Osbourne. Some high points include the fast-paced opener "Neon Knights", the light-yet-heavy "Children Of The Sea", the hard-rocking "Die Young", and the slow, mournful "Lonely Is The Word". Then there's the title track, which is one of those tunes that really has to be heard to be believed. An epic in the best sense of the word; when it's over you can't believe that seven minutes have passed. I subtracted half a star because there is a little bit of filler here. Lady Evil is interesting but in no way does it stand up to most of the other songs on the album, and Walk Away is just fluff. But the rest of the album is so unbelievably great that it's pretty easy to ignore.

If you're a metal fan and don't have this album you need to rectify the situation immediately. Add to cart NOW!

I'll never forget this album.......2007-06-09

April, 1992. This ablum blends in with the fabric of my memories for that time. I remember it was a beautiful spring that year, and I was looking out over a field of desert wildflowers, with these songs in my head. I remember making love that night to my then girlfriend behind a bush in the park. I remember learning many of these songs and playing them with my friends in bedrooms and garages. Every time I hear "Bad luck" kick in today, I still am filled with the most awsome feeling inside.
This is great, honest, no-frills rock. One of the things I like most about it is the somewhat limited vocal capabilities of the songwriter--he's one of those that has a great song but can only sing it "the best he can", which is great because it keeps things honest, real, and full of true feeling

Social Distortion At Their Best!.......2007-03-29

This album perfects the rockabilly sound that the band began with "Prison Bound" and "Social Distortion". It is definately the most country influenced album that they have ever released but it still holds on to their punk roots. Still, it is an incredible difference from "Mommy's Little Monster". If you are a fan of that album, this is a bit of a 180.

I would agree that this is their most "complete" album. This album contains little to no filler material. It can easily be listened to from front to back. The real standout songs on this album are...

Lightlly naive in some lyrics but musically admirable, this SD CD is the best frontal entrance gate to one of the finest musical cocktails prepared with a mixture of blues, rockabilly, seventies punk and even some gospel. Lovelly violent and charming.

Their best record, no doubt.......2006-11-09

This is easily their best record--others will argue that it's the self-titled, or "white light..," but this is it. All of the promise found on Prison Bound and the self-titled is realized here. Unlike the earlier records, there's no filler (Drug Train anyone?) to be found here at all. It's just a solid rock album. Yeah, this is easily their best. It's just a solid, mature record all the way through, and the groovy bonus track makes it even better. I love the distorted vocals on that last tune....

Absolutely Pure & Beautiful.......2005-10-31

If you buy no other classical music, buy this collection. CD 1 (Relax) is perfect for dinner, quiet entertaining or just soft music while you're working. From "Come Away With Me", to "Whiter Shade of Pale" to "Knights in White Satin"... each piece is it's own movement - and moved you will be... Perfect for a romantic evening. CD2 is more robust, but equally entertaining. "Layla", "Livin On A Prayer", Stairway to Heaven", "Run to You" and "Bohemian Rhapsody" - you owe it to yourself to hear these licks performed by the RPO.

Symphonic Rock.......2005-07-25

It really isn't rock, but it is a very pleasant presentation of popular music, rendered in creative ways by a full symphony orchestra. It sounds like the orchestra had a great time making these CD's.

I received this as a present and at first I wasn't sure if I would like it because I don't like some of the original songs, but there's something about hearing the orchestra play that makes me like all of them. Just try it out.

This is a really great CD by Jedi Mind Tricks, it's one of their best! I highly recommend "Servants in Heaven, Kings in Hell" for anyone who needs to pickup some new rap music for their collection.

Strong And Vicious (Rating: 9 out of 10- -4.5 stars).......2007-05-11

Jedi Mind Tricks, has been a group that I really haven't been following too much. I've only heard two of their albums: "Visions Of Ghandi" & "The Psycho-Social CD", and I have been very impressed with the albums that the group has made.

I didn't think to buy this album, until about a couple of months ago. Listening to Vinnie Paz' rhymes, he seems to sound more stronger and lyrical than ever. Listening to "Suicide", he sounds more stronger than ever. I actually like the samples that DJ Kwestion placed into the hooks for this song as well as "Put The In The Grave". I haven't heard anything too much like this in a while, especially this year. "Uncommon Valor: A Vietnam Story" features a sick verse from R.A. The Rugged Man, who actually outshines Vinnie Paz. Another touching song is the track is the track "Shadow Business" when Vinnie Paz talks about how life is from China and kids who work hard to support thier families. "Outlive The War" feauting Sean Price and Block Mc Cloud.

I'm not sure about any of the other albums that are out, but the CD that I have has three bonus tracks. One of the tracks that I liked was "Pretty Little Whores" with Outerspace. I also have a DVD with the video of "Heavy Metal Kings" (dope Mobb Deep sample), as well as the making of the music video.

As for any negatives, I quickly noticed the way that Vinnie Paz rhymes. It's like at the end of almost every bar, he quickly says something very short that rhymes with the last thing he said (if you heard the album, you would know exactly what I'm talking about.) That carries throughout the album. Also I wasn't feeling the Terror Remix to "Heavy Metal Kings".

Overall this album is excellent and one of the best of 2006. In fact Babygrande Records has been releasing excellent material thoughout the year (5% Album, Hi-Teknology 2: The Chip, etc.). This is one of the albums that many would enjoy the insensity of Vinnie Paz' lyrics, backed by Stupe The Enemy's production. I recommend that you check this out. Peace.

If you have been a fan of jedi mind tricks for a while, and i mean you have their CDs, not just listen to some of their songs. Then you can agree with me that with ever release comes something different. That is what makes them so great, their ability to stay fresh, because you don't know what is coming next. JMT was one hip hop group that i was fully into, because that was when i started actually listening to hip hop and looking for CDs not just hearing songs on the radio. I bought everything they put out, so it is hard for me to say that something of theirs is wack and only give them a 3 star rating, but i swear this album is nasty. Stoupe comes so correct with the production although some songs sound similar, it doesn't matter. He is like a mix of premier and havoc, because he makes those great samples and has songs you can feel in your bones. "Heavy Metal Kings" is such a nasty song, the beat comes in so hard and just hypes you up for a fight. But one of my favorite songs is "Uncommon Valor"(A Vietnam Story) the story that Paz and R.A. the rugged man unfold is a horrific tail of two different prospectives on the Vietnam War, but it just has that erie feeling to it like as if you are watching Marten Sheen covered with mud popping out of the water in Apocalypse Now. Fans questioned JMT after their release of Visions of Ghandi, many thought that they were just a fluk but now they have proven that they are a very stable, and influential rap group that knows their history of hip hop and can still play in the world of today.

The Art Of Consistency {4.5 Stars}.......2006-12-07

On their fifth release Vinnie and Stoupe craft what I believe to be their best effort yet. Say what you will about Vinnie's lyrics, but he brings it to your chest every time he spits. I personally don't find his lyrics offensive, but I think it's safe to say that JMT's stuff isn't for the easily offended. As far as the CD itself, Stoupe brings the heat on the boards. He's been dope and consistant from day one, so all you fans kow what to expect. Though the album is laced with banger after banger (I'd say 16 of 19 joints are tight), I think the consensus on "Uncommon Valor" being the best track on the entire album is pretty much spot on. The mentality of Vietnam soldiers. Brilliant. Vinnie provides one side of the equation (the scared soldier that wants to just do his job and leave) while R.A. is the booze drinking, vietnamese women screwin' (his words, not mine), glory seeking, violence loving soldier looking to be a hero. It's original and captivating in it's delivery. Hip Hop could definitely use more of that.

The DVD contains the video for "Heavy Metal Kings" which features Ill Bill and has a cameo by R.A. The Rugged Man. It also contains behind the scenes footage (Vinnie signing records, R.A. commentary, the making of the video, etc...).

You know, there isn't much wrong with this album. I found the three "bonus" tracks to be so-so (there are no wack tracks though), but what bores me the quickest is Vinnie P's cadence -- it never changes. Some will argue that if you've been down with JMT for a while then you should be used to that, and they're probably right, but I'm beginning to tire of the predictability of his cadence. No worries though, the content of his lyrics make up for it.

Servants In Heaven, Kings In Hell is one of the top ten '06 rap releases. Vinnie Paz and Stoupe have a consistant formula. No peaks and valleys, just steady, dependable production. With that being said, I think this is probably the first peak, because this is their best album in my humble opinion. I recommend adding this one to collection.

A more Rock&Roll'n selection from tee third incarnation ov Psychic TV. Introduces some old thematic rhythms from their first albums, along with Genesis's philosophies on polydrogeny ascetics. Best PTV recording out since "Allegory & Self"/"Godstar". Mr. P-orridge tries harder than ever to actually sing-doing a much bettre job than the latest Throbbing Gristle Project "Endless Not".

Movement to rock.......2007-07-20

It seems that Genesis P-Orridge has finished with Acid House for the moment. This album made a shift to rock, with traditional set-up and linear song structure. Makes for great listening, headphones or speakers.

Saw the CD release show, my first time to a Psychic TV event and it blew myself and friends away. Psychic TV made at least two new fans that night. One of the best shows I have been to, the main set went on for nearly three hours.

Douglas Rushkoff also has keyboard credits on this album, so check it out.

(PS: PTV3 has a new lineup and completely different style from PTV's previous incarnations. Embrace the change.)

I would have liked this more when I was 16.......2007-06-28

Let me start by saying that I am a big fan of experimental music of all kinds. I'm always ready and willing to dive into something which is unlike anything I've heard before. I'm also no stranger to Genesis P. Orridge's work, having heard all of Throbbing Gristle's albums, many Psychic TV albums, and having enjoyed his work with Pigface.



TG is a mixed bag for me. I appreciate the dynamic of the group and the balls it took to make and stand by the music when they did... but now it just seems trite. Only very occasionally did they manage to break through the gimmick of banging on things to make noise and create a piece of "musick" that affected me on anything more than a basic visceral level.



What I've heard of Psychic TV affects me the same way, only instead of making noise, they are writing the most obnoxiously meaningless imitations of pop songs imaginable. Whenever I'm reminded of them, I always wonder why so many people who are into underground type experimental music enjoy PTV so much. The only thing I can figure is that it's the corny pseudo-religious aspects of their philosophies. Whatever the case may be, it usually ends up sounding much like everything I've always hated about popular music, but done badly. The only exception is their album Trip/Reset, which I do still listen to on occasion. I really can't tell you why I enjoy that album and not the rest, but I think it has something to do with the consistency of mood throughout it. It's very mellow, and aptly named.



I bought this album anyway. I got it because of the quick sound samples I heard on Amazon. It sounded different from the things I hate about PTV, but some of it also reminded me of the things I liked about Trip/Reset. I thought it might be a new direction for the group.



Well.. it is a new direction for them. But unfortunately, hearing the songs in full turned out to be a tedious experience. The albums opener sounds like a dumbed down Johnny Rotten/PIL imitation. The second song was entirely forgettable. The third song sounded like a different version of the first. Maximum Swing, my favorite song off the album, starts out a little bit interesting, but quickly degenerates into an unbearably repetitive waste of bytes. The next two songs have a similar vibe as some of the tracks I liked off of Trip/Reset, but holy crap.. they just drone on and on with no point whatsoever. The rest of the album is entirely throwaway. Hookah Chalice and Just Because sound like retreads of tracks 1 and 5, and BB sounds like The Cult with an even more annoying and whiny singer. The last song is simply a joke. Sitar samples with stilted vocal drones. The song is 7 minutes long, but it sounds like it took less than a minute to "write".



Bottom line:



Most of these songs have some sort of potential, but they have no business being as long as they are, and Genesis sounds younger and more immature as he gets older.



On the other hand, this might be the "punkest" album I've heard in years. I guess I just grew out of the "punk" thing a long time ago.



If they would start focusing on actually writing music and stop trying so hard (and failing so hard) to be scary or edgy, they might be onto something. As it stands now, they are simply laughable to me.

wonders never cease! First I'll say that this is a cyber glam record, only it's very analogue, with a Ziggy Star Dust 2007 sound. I wouldn't have guessed a sound like this, a sound that I associate as an old rock sound, could sound so fresh, so right so now, i am of the avante guard variety when it comes to music, but some how this works! on glam pop rock estetics as well as pagan occultic modes of expression and also on the poetic museing level, there is no industrial sound here but definately a dose of psychedelic. I might also add that this is a great summer time record.

It's easy to forget the sheer freight of Vangelis's 1975 recording, Heaven and Hell. Released five years before his infamous score for the film Chariots of Fire, Heaven and Hell is a symphonic suite for orchestra and chorus; only the orchestra is all Vangelis, playing an array of electronic keyboards and percussion, joined by the English Chamber Choir.

It's a magnificent work, both bombastic and serene, part Carl Orff, part Bach, but rich with that indefinable, spatial moodiness that's trademark Vangelis. The choir calls out to the heavens, synthesizers spin in counterpoint to tuned percussion, and timpani and cymbals crash on the shores of Vangelis's electronic orchestra. The second movement begins in pure abstraction before leaping into a joyous Asian-inspired section of rippling koto and plucked synth timbres and chimes. While the title suite makes up more than 40 minutes, the album's still best known for Vangelis's delicate if overly sentimental duet with Yes singer Jon Anderson on "So Long Ago, So Clear." The magical hands of the composer emerge from the whirling hellfires, touching upon the 'sin-thesizer' to entertain the infernal hordes with rippling and dancing notes, manifesting the mesmerizing Fates from the misty flames...

Bombastic soundscapes from the genius of this one-man band, sonically describing the mythological battle between 'good' and 'evil', making for a great hypothetical soundtrack. But more than that, it is repleat with glorious choral rises, militant permutations, eerie interludes, and inspirational Ur sound bliss cascades upon the senses like a sonic waterfall, both placid and torrential.

In the last six minutes of "Heaven And Hell Part I", one can perceive the faint origins of "Chariots of Fire" right before gracefully floating into the melancholy "So Long Ago, So Clear", sung by the enchanting vocal talents of Yes' Jon Anderson, reminiscient of Bryan Ferry's style of singing, with Tangerine Dream-like orchestration. Quite moving.

'Heaven And Hell Part II' begins darkly brooding, until we are treated to a haunting aria slowly blending into a choral duet, then on to further arcane adventures of the mind...

A musical journey into the multi-dimensional subconscious where the imagination may project into the darkness, and otherwise can serve as ritual musick for victory and compassion.

A good Vangelis album that features a choir.......2006-08-20

This is a wonderful Vangelis album and is fairly energetic, with enough experimental flourishes to keep the listener fully engaged. Released in 1975, Heaven and Hell incorporates a full choir into the Vangelis sound.

Vangelis played all of the instruments on this album including synthesizers, electric piano, acoustic piano, a full drum kit, and percussion. Vangelis is joined by the English Chamber Choir (conducted by Guy Protheroe) with Vana Veroutis as the lead female vocal, in addition to Jon Anderson (vocals/lyrics on Heaven and Hell (Part 1 So Long Ago, So Clear). Vangelis is quite a good musician and really shines on the acoustic piano. As a huge Yes fan, I was delighted to hear Jon's excellent voice and cosmic lyrics. As far as the inclusion of the choir goes, I did not mind it that much and felt that it added a very interesting textural element to the recording.

The Heaven and Hell suite is divided into two lengthy movements including Part I (21'58") and Part II (21'16"). In general, the first part is more orchestral in nature and features the choir and excellent acoustic piano playing by Vangelis. Another general observation is that the first movement mixes vigorous sections that feature drums with spacey and haunting synth-dominated passages. Of course, my favorite part comes at the end of Part I, which is the 4'58" section with Jon on vocals. This short "song" is quite moving and uplifting. Movement II is a little darker and more experimental than the first movement and is my favorite of the two. The choir is featured on the second movement, along with a beautiful wordless vocal by the very talented Vana Veroutis. Part II closes with a very spacey and quiet synthesizer section, which provides excellent contrast with the preceding thunderous percussion section.

All in all, this is a good Vangelis album and is recommended along with Albedo 0.39 (1976); Spiral (1977); and the excellent Opera Sauvage (1979).

Minor Ups and Downs.......2006-05-12

I suppose that with a title like HEAVEN AND HELL, one should expect some ups and down. I did in terms of enjoyment and in terms of interest.

I am not a stranger to long pieces. I like classical music. I got turned on to Mike Oldfield in 1979. I even remember having a Vangelis 8 track back then but I don't remember what it was called. Vangelis too, seems to specialize in long, symphonic type compositions. With any such long work, though, the artist is bound to hit ups and downs in terms of interest. This one certainly does but the ups are not very far up.

Criticism aside, the artist is effective at capturing his "theme". He manages to portray, musically, the tension between good and evil. There are even a few delightful tidbits in which they might be confused for a few brief moments.

This will appeal mostly to those who like electronica. I do, sometimes. I am willing to give him another try sometime but he is not at the top of my list.

Classic Vangelis.......2006-03-09

Before Vangelis became known in the Western music world-- helped along by the motion picture soundtracks for Chariots of Fire and Bladerunner--he helped create the genre of electronic music. He was a pioneer in the true sense of the word.

First Released in 1975, Heaven and Hell is a masterpiece. It is at times operatic--with the appearance of the English Chamber Choir--and at times lyrically soothing--encompassing the angelic voices of Jon Anderson and Vana Veroutis. Instrumentally, Heaven and Hell delves into the the psyche of the human spirit and hearkens to our very beginings. Appropriately, sections of this release were used for Carl Sagan's 1970s television series "Cosmos."

I first discovered this album in 1982 and recently replaced the vinyl with the CD and am now rediscovering it. Any true fan of Vangelis--or electronic music--must include this in his collection. It is perhaps Vangelis' true begining in popular electronic music, and is a journey unto itself.

AFTER CENTURIES.......2005-08-20

or at least decades, that Greek guy that was
slated for Wakeman's section of the stage did an
RCA records soloist-gig. Then, this recording was
released.
Then, not selling as much as RUMOURS or BOSTON,
it got shoved back into the cut-racks. THEN, it
was reworked into THE OMEN soundtrack.
And it literally took ' CHARIOTS... ' to regenerate
this delightful piano-dude into the top forty.

In time, it was upgraded to classic-status; this
disc is worth 75 'Wish You Were Here'(s).

I bought this album looking for something new/different/and off the wall to play on my radio show, and it has it. It's kinda fun to listen to and the songs are good. For the money it's worth adding to your Dwight Yoakum music library, and will give you 9 Dwight songs that to my knowledge aren't on anything else. Just wish one of them had been a rock-a-billy number....

Dwight's Bad Days.......2006-02-24

After suffering through the"most painful experience" of his life in completing this film, Dwight Yoakam also suffered horrible reviews for it. Maybe he tried to accomplish too much for his first directorial outing, in that he also wrote, scored, and starred in it, but really, it isn't that bad. I'm not a movie critic, I only know that this movie's story line and execution entertain me.(Other than the late Michael Jeter, who was a memorable actor, but at a certain decibel level, his voice makes me want to bite someone). Being a HUGE Dwight fan, I may be biased,but I think this movie's worth a look.

First let me say that 'Words', selections which begin and end this CD, the end being a sort of jazzy rendention are the two best tracks on the CD. As I said in my review of the film, in addition to this 'companion' soundtrack, I would have loved to additionally own the 'actual' soundtrack. Some may have found it monotonous, while I myself found it mesmerizing. That soundtrack can be isolated on the DVD and one could record it on tape for their own listening pleasure, but I digress....

This companion soundtrack contains a variety of musical genres. I particularly enjoyed 'Who At The Door Is Standing' and 'What's Left Of Me' and you can't get any more diverse than that.

The between-track dialogue is enjoyment to me. Perhaps because it reminds me of the film, which is one of my favorites.

Anyone who loves Dwight Yoakam, his music, and his band will love the divergence and quality of this CD and will want to have it in their collection.

If you love Yoakam music...you're gonna LOVE this...........2002-06-15

.....but, you might want to skip the movie; it's a "yawner". {Although, Mr. Yoakam "Do look MIGHTY FINE" in all that western wear!:>}

The CD has a western flavor. A refreshing change from the usual Yoakam {not that we don't love that too!} The first cut, "Words" is quiet, reflective....and says alot with a few words, really. "Who At My Door Is Standing", "The Darkest Hour" and "It Is Well With MY Soul, are old gospel favorites done with heart and I enjoyed hearing them by Yoakam. "Somewhere" is my favorite on the CD because it's so western-melancholy-sweet. I relate to his "What's Left Of Me"..I enjoyed the tongue-in-cheek lyrics...{I really can't stand Jagger...so we'll give Dwight most of the credit for this one}. "Tears For Two" and "No Future In Sight" are the same "down-on-your-luck-but-with-a-sense-of-dry-humor" stuff we are used to from him....but with the same western flavor as the rest of the CD. As you can see, I'm not much of an expert when it comes to reviews....but if you enjoy Yoakam music....you REALLY need to add this one to your collection.
